HISD schools admission

Recommended Posts

I was in the process of switching schools from private to our neighborhood school for 2 of my kids. Our school is approx. 1/2 of a block away from my house and we are zoned for it.

We spent 7 months going through the testing/ard/iep for one of my kids with the school. We then receive a letter telling us our kids will be attending different schools miles away from our home.

It is not an acceptable nor reasonable decision. How do I fight this?

I'm not sure that you can, or should want to.  When my daughter was in public elementary school she never went to the school that we were zoned for.  She went to the school that had the appropriate program for her.  Transportation shouldn't be a problem because I believe they are required to provide the transportation from your house.  I could be mistaken about this, but my daughter always had the special education bus that stopped right at our house when we opted for school transportation.

We've always had the best luck calling the school directly with stuff like this. Although with it being summer/COVID I doubt there's anyone around there to talk to. Maybe try emailing them? We've still been getting emails from our kid's school's principal.

Unfortunately I don't have much else to add other than to confirm that HISD absolutely gets their jollies on making this shit as complicated and obscure as possible. It'd be hilarious how convoluted everything is if it wasn't also, you know, kinda important.
