My kids are in DISD and it is truly a hidden gem of a district. There are so many options for all the kids in the district to be in wonderful, custom learning environments that cater to their strengths and interests. It’s mostly magnet based, either stand alone or imbedded in traditional campuses. But the parent(s) have to be involved, even if that just means getting their child to the bus stop at their neighborhood school on time

It also is a serious talent drain on the local schools, which fucks up their outcomes scores and makes the environment in those schools that much worse for learning. There are many vocal critics of the program, and the better a school performs the stronger the outcry not to fund it, even though it may be the only way up and out for many of these children.

It's not a terrible bet, if you get the right odds. Income level is important, but not the sole factor in economic mobility.  Among low income families, regional variations are important determinants of outcomes. There has been some work out of Harvard that demonstrates that the regional factor with the strongest association with economic mobility is the percentage of single parent households in your region. Racial segregation, school graduation rates, and community involvement are also important factors. If you want to break the cycle of poverty, one of the best things that you can do for your children is find an apartment complex in a location where there are relatively more dual parent family units and better schools. There are studies that have examined the impact of voucher programs to assist with housing costs.  Take a kid out of the milieu of a high poverty area, and put them in a relatively lower poverty neighborhood with better regional factors previously mentioned, and they kids have measurably better outcomes including both income and propensity to become single parents. But they have to get out of that environment before high school age. After high school age, the move is actually counterproductive. As brisket points out, family unit is THE factor. Hold everything other than income level equal, and those low income kids have a puncher's chance.  Of course, in reality all of regional factors, income, family unit, parental educational attainment, etc are all interrelated.

Expand

Ummmm....."the odds" is the entire point of the bet.

Economics isn't the sole factor in mobility....but it's a proxy and indicator for many of the things that ARE factors.  Your last "in reality" sentence is what it boils down to.

It's easy for a guy with my family and upbringing not to be poor as an adult.

It's hard for a guy who grows up in a poor household with a busted family unit to not be poor as an adult.

Sure, any individual can beat the odds -- I could succumb to addiction, lose everything, and end up living under a bridge.  And the poor kid could beat the odds and found a billion dollar company.

But if we're playing the odds....come one.  It just strikes me as fucking cruel and utterly dismissive to say from the top of the 20k foot mountain "hey, I got here, just climb!" when I started 1,000 feet below the summit, and I'm hollering that at someone who is starting at the base of the mountain, has never even seen the example of how a mountain should be climbed, and has shitty shoes and a windbreaker.  Sure, that kid may make it.  But don't bet on it.

Also pulling kids out of shit schools where other kids peer pressure kids that want to be smart into thinking that an education is a bad thing, paying attention or doing your work makes you less cool.

Seems like it should be the ones who think education is a bad thing that should be pulled out.

The IQ spectrum may very well be becoming more polarized just like the political, educational, income, and religious spectrums are.

Yeah, but neither the median nor the mean of IQ would tell you that. You would have to look at the mode along with the variance in the data. But again, assuming you are correct, that is probably still due to an education gap (environmental extremes-- all the things you listed) and not an actual intelligence gap.

I think he's talking about betting odds, not odds of success.

On a related note, I heard about this study on NPR...

Black boys raised in America, even in the wealthiest families and living in some of the most well-to-do neighborhoods, still earn less in adulthood than white boys with similar backgrounds, according to a sweeping new study that traced the lives of millions of children.

Just asking, but is it "the only way out for many of these children"? Not focusing on "only", but is this helping a group of underprivileged students or is this a school that some inside-the-loop parents have created  to offer a curriculum to challenge their kids? There are a couple of that variety in Houston isd that aren't doing much for the gen pop but have provided a safe landing spot for the children of parents that live in a nice pocket of a crappy isd. I guess it's still better than running off to private schools...

I like thinking outside of the box.  I’ll report back with results of your idea.

So he vows to "call out" any individual who slanders him . . .  and then he spends a few minutes bitching about someone who has dogged him for years and who recently resurfaced, but he goes out of his way NOT to name them, rather just referring to them as "this individual", over and over.

Way to get tough, Sean.  Beast mode.

Who can watch that and think they are being informed?  It’s just a baffling show.

Do people watch to learn the news? Obviously not.

Do people watch to get arguments for their side? Maybe, but you have to sense while you’re watching it they aren’t very good arguments made by a half wit.  There are plenty of actual conservative thinkers out there

There has to be some reptilian brain stem phenomenon for people watching that where they get some satisfaction out of having the simple parts of the brain stimulated.

Plus, Hannity himself knows his stuff is not real. You can’t tell me that this dude does not understand questions about “what someone was thinking when he did [x]” when intent is an element of virtually every crime.  You don’t have to be a lawyer to know that.  You don’t have to have finished 8th grade to know that.

Look like Sean Hannity is getting another attorney to back channel Trump...since the other one is about to go into witness protection

What’s going to be satisfying is how Hannity is treated by the history books.

I hope.

In any other time and place, he’d end up swinging in the town square, so I guess we should be happy that we’re more enlightened.

He should be happy we're more enlightened. Hannity is a traitor. I'd like to see him get the William Wallace treatment, except with his last breath, Hannity can scream out Donaaaaaaald.

My concern as well. So far, that's what's been happening in the GOP.

i understand that what you are hoping for is an outcome from this mess that is good for us and for the country.  my great suspicion is that that hope is what buoys almost all of us posting here who live here.

whole time i've seen this usurpation in reflection of henry vii stealing england.  here's an interesting (i think, therefore i yam happy with it) bbc documentary where there is an attempt to right the story a bit.  henry executing richard in a fake battle resulted in his orchestrating the recitation of brit history of that era.

Is there a better embodiment of a human penis head than Sean Hannity’s actual head? Because I’m just not seeing one.
