For me, that's why I don't care about looting. When I look at the moral landscape, the looting done by the wealth class from the founding of the nation all the way until today is 10000x more morally repugnant to me than broke people stealing stuff that's insured anyway.

I don't know if I'm a "Marxist" or not. I don't say that because I'm afraid of the label, but because I don't think it's accurate. Then again, accuracy isn't really your goal, emotional hyperbole, trolling, and shitposting is your thing.

Can you explain what's wrong with my calculation, though? When I look at the present moment I see individual citizens acting out of normal habit but a corrupt and blind government doing what it always does. I'm way more worried about that corrupt and blind government than I am about the temporary acting-out of a relative handful of citizens.

The architect tours are among the best thing to take visitors to while in town. That and a recommendation of reading Devil in the White City prior. Those and the Mob scenes bus tour are great. Took my best friend/sister (RIP miss ya homie) and mom on both. Big hits. One of my few extremely positive drinking stories is me sippin' Jameson outta flask and her with a rum Slurpy on the Mob tour. All stealthy and shit. (Mom was NOT pleased, but she gave us a full pass on that one)

Your Chicago friends sound like they suck.

Devil In The White City, such a great book.  All his books have been great reads.  This shit is gonna got on thru November, then depending on who wins it will quiet down (shocked shocked I'll be) or it will ratchet up a bit more.

Besides it being simplistic, intellectually lazy, and minus your direct usage of the words Bourgeoisie and Proletariat, straight from the Communist Manifesto?

Just fucking quote the book direct and be done with it.  Every one of boorish posts ends up the same way:

"inevitably lead to the victory of the proletariat" over the bourgeoisie who, in developing the productive forces, had created their own "gravediggers".

The video was pushed by Ruptly several nights and became a leading story on Russian-government owned news site Russia Today.

While it was true that a pair of protesters burned at least one Bible, the story was misconstrued to depict the scene as a mass group of protesters burning a stack of Bibles.

One Twitter user, Ian Michael Cheong - who is Malaysian but portrays himself as a right-wing American political pundit - retweeted the video with the caption "Left-wing activists bring a stack of Bibles to burn in front of the federal courthouse in Portland."

The video does not show the location of the fire, does not include more than two protesters, does not show a stack of Bibles, and does not indicate the political ideologies of the people burning the Bible.

The protesters near the fire only react when an American flag is tossed onto the fire, after which they cheered.

According to local news reports on the protest, another group of protesters tried to extinguish the fire, but that scene was not included in the Ruptly video nor was it mentioned in the Russia Today story.

But don't let me sour your kool-aid

Yes. Because neither one gives a shit about the average black life. Unless the shooter is a cop. They are only here for the grift(money) and to take advantage of the situation.

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29645312/clippers-patrick-beverley-death-close-friend-hits-home

Tears began streaming down Beverley's face. It has been just over three weeks since Beverley lost one of his best friends, Davaris Davis, who was shot and killed in Chicago on July 20.

Last weekend, four people were killed and at least 36 others were wounded in shootings across Chicago, according to the Sun-Times. Early Monday, hundreds of people descended on downtown Chicago, with vandals smashing windows and looting several businesses along Michigan Avenue. According to reports, a police shooting that occurred on the South Side of the city may have sparked the downtown disturbance.

"I cried on my way to practice on the back of the bus, man," Beverley told ESPN. "It makes me just want to hurry up and win my championship -- understanding that I have to go through every process and phase [to get] that while being fortunate to be out here with my teammates -- and then get back home to my homies, get back to my friends.

"I am tired of losing people. You know? It hits home for me. I have to deal with the reality when I get back, [but until then] comforting my friends, being a leader right here, being a leader of my crew back home in Chicago."

"I just want to shine a light on the city of Chicago," Beverley said. "It ain't safe right now. It's a tough time. But there are still kids in there that want to go to the NBA and still kids in there that have dreams to be the next Patrick Beverley. And I just want to make sure that I am staying focused and doing what it takes to inspire.

"Because I am starting to lose people that's real close to me, and it is starting to hit home. This [restart in the] bubble, my game, the way I carry myself is important, not only to me, but to all the inner-city kids around there. ... I am trying to make a difference, yo. Just trying to find a way to get everyone out [of danger], you know?"

————————————————————

the article speaks to your point and also for itself imo.

And unfortunate. Because Beverly’s friend—his life should matter too.

"It's a very unfortunate situation, losing a friend to gun violence," Beverley said. "But I am fortunate to be in the bubble, and I mean that wholeheartedly. I am able to focus on my craft, not able to deal with kind of the reality, not just yet.

1) Shootings in Chicago are very largely concentrated in poor black neighborhoods with high percentage of gang membership and drug use.

2) Downtown and "white" neighborhoods are largely safe. I'm not sure if the comment above about the boat tour being a "riot" was meant literally or figuratively. But the boat tours are absolutely safe, although likely not operating at the present time.

3) Perhaps part of the reason for the eruption of protest/looting/violence has to do with the fact that black neighborhoods have been segregated, strategically disenfranchised, and largely ignored by those in power and the general (white) populace of Chicago. "Chicago's perfectly safe! All those shootings only happen the black neighborhoods so you don't have to worry about going on a boat tour". Black people are tired of being ignored, treated like shit, and having their civil rights violated by the police.

4) BLM is not a monolith. There are different groups advocating for different things, and having dialogues about how to best progress the overarching movement for black equality forward. Here is an example of that. There are nuanced discussions taking place among different factions.

Older Englewood Leaders To Young Protesters: Don’t ‘Disrupt Our Neighborhood’ And Leave Us With Angry Police

The clash at a protest against police violence outside the Englewood police station highlighted a generational divide between activists.

PUBLISHED ONAUG 12, 2020 9:46AM CDTENGLEWOOD, CHATHAMPRIMARY CATEGORY IN WHICH BLOG POST IS PUBLISHED

ENGLEWOOD — Lifelong Englewood resident Keith Harris knows about tragedy, having lost his only child, 29-year-old Keith Richmond, to gun violence Saturday.

So when protesters, many of whom he said were from outside Englewood, showed up in front of the Englewood (7th) District police station Tuesday night to protest police violence without informing older neighborhood activists, Harris saw it as an affront. The young group was met by older Englewood activists and residents with megaphones, who shouted at them to go home.

The clash outside the police station highlighted a generational divide between activists.

“They’re agitators,” Harris said. “Their heart might be in the right place, but they are being led down the wrong road. They need to be led in a different direction.”

The protest — organized by Black Lives Matter Chicago, the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression, GoodKids MadCity and Southsiders Organized for Unity and Liberation, according to flyers — started as a car caravan and ended with a rally in front of the police station. The activists were protesting after 20-year-old Latrell Allen was shot by police Sunday in Englewood.

Allen survived the shooting and is expected to recover. Police have said Allen shot at officers during a foot chase — which his family has said is untrue — and he’s been charged with attempted murder.

RELATED: Police Shot A Black Man In Englewood. Then Misinformation Spread Like Wildfire

The issue residents like Harris and Darryl Smith, Englewood Political Task Force president, had with the younger protesters and activists is they said they received no communication about the planned protest.

“Y’all don’t come out when the kids get shot. Y’all come out when it has something to do with the f—ing police,” Smith said. “We out here every day watching our kids get their brains blown out, with no budget, no resources. Y’all motherf—ers getting all the resources, and you want to come over here and disrupt our neighborhood.”

With news cameras rolling, they didn’t want the protesters to be the only ones speaking for the people of Englewood. And when outside protesters get the police upset, they leave neighborhood residents to deal with angry police, Smith said.

“Y’all see the riot gear? This the s— we gotta deal when y’all leave,” he said.

One of the groups protesting, GoodKids MadCity, is composed of Englewood residents, including 18-year-old West Englewood resident Miracle Boyd, who had her teeth knocked out by a police officer at the Columbus protest in Grant Park in July.

The group routinely marches against violence that plagues young people on the South Side and has loudly denounced violence against children.

After the protest Tuesday, GoodKids MadCity said on Twitter they left because “aggressive agitators were being disruptive & tried to provoke us into a confrontation. We live in #Englewood…”

Harris, who is 52, said their anger against the young protesters is justified. They think Englewood residents are being largely blamed for the Downtown looting that took place overnight Sunday, noting Police Supt. David Brown said the first reported incident of looting happened at 87th and the Dan Ryan, outside of Englewood.

“Why would a person from Englewood, from 63rd Street, go to 87th Street and start a caravan to go Downtown? We would just get on the expressway and go downtown?” Smith said. “We have to stop letting outsiders come into our community and antagonize our police. Now our police are bitter with us. We’re not gonna have it.”

Looking toward the younger protesters on the street, some from outside the neighborhood, Smith said: “No one there has to deal with these police after today. When they leave, the police are going to be pulling us over, the police are going to be pulling our kids out of cars for no reason because they are bitter now. You come and shut down 63rd Street, all this extra manpower, they’re mad.”

One such protester, 17-year-old Saint Gates, who said he lived on the South Side but not in Englewood, confronted the older Englewood men.

“I’m 17. You’ve been doing this for 30 years; you haven’t gotten any results. We are the youth, let us try,” Gates shouted through a megaphone.

To that, Harris told a reporter, “The wheel has been around since before I was born. We don’t reinvent the wheel. If the wheel is a circle, you don’t make it square because it might not ride the way you want it to ride. You get another tire or you improve on the tire. You don’t just dismantle it.”

Later, Gates was more contrite.

“We’re approaching it two different ways. I can respect their anger because they live here. They see it every day. The kids who died are their kids,” he said.

Another protester from outside Englewood, 29-year-old Julio Miramontes from the Southeast Side and a member of the Chicago Chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America, said the decision by organizers to not contact anyone in Englewood beforehand was a mistake.

“I totally understand the frustrations of someone from a neighborhood not wanting outsiders to tell them how issues should be dealt with,” Miramontes said. “I came here to support, but when I got here I found out that none of the organizers of this event had actually coordinated with anyone from the neighborhood and I think that’s wrong.”

Englewood activist Joseph Williams said even someone as respected as Jesse Jackson would have contacted someone in the community before coming to protest something.

“I respect Jesse Jackson, I love him. But at the end of the day, even Jesse Jackson would call the alderman or someone to connect with before he would come into that community,” said Williams, founder of Mr. Dad’s Fathers Club.

Perhaps nothing emphasized the generational gap more than when Gates, who is 17, asked 42-year-old Duane Kidd for what answer he had to the problems the Black community is facing.

“You want a quick, short answer to a problem that old? We’ve been oppressed since we got off ships,” Kidd responded.

Harris also took issue with what he called the “social media cancel culture activism,” saying his organization helped young people get jobs, contrasting it with recent activism that led the city to remove Christopher Columbus statues in Chicago.

“We’ve been doing this, we’ve been fighting for Black lives and against crime and violence,” Harris said. “Our organization since 2003 have put young men and women into construction jobs. We’ve changed lives…we got young men and women here who never had a job in their lives, jobs. And now they have careers and they are raising their families and setting an example for other young men and women.

“They got a statue torn down. How did that benefit anybody? What’s the benefit of that? How many people can open up a business because that statue got torn down?”

After about an hour, the younger protesters left the area, with several saying they were respecting the wishes of the Englewood residents. Some marched for a few blocks away from the station before heading to their cars and leaving.

Englewood Police. Cmdr. Larry Snelling, who walked between the groups and at times helped to cool tempers on both sides, said the confrontation could be a positive.

“I think it’s a good thing. I think it’s an education for both sides,” Snelling said. “I think these people need to see the people that actually live in this neighborhood and what they deal with on a daily basis. These people walk in here spewing things based on misinformation and limited information.”

The same leaders that exist in any city. The mayor, the alderman, the police, civic organizations like the City Club of Chicago, Cook County Board and the Department of Finance, as they're the ones that control the Tax Increment Financing (TIF) funding that is misappropriated to use dollars specifically allocated to be dedicated to development projects in neighborhoods with low tax revenues and few developmental opportunities but instead get spent on building basketball arenas for DePaul and other downtown projects.

I can see where you're going with the "quotes" and a quick look at your comically reductive posting history confirms my suspicions that you lay the blame at Chicago's problems at their own "leaders" who were appointed and elected by the very populations that are protesting/rioting. So I'll go ahead and placate your biases and confirm that many of the community leaders from black communities have often done a poor job of advocating for the people they represent. It's an inherently corrupt city. And it corrupts good people. That applies to local community organizations, elected alderman, police, and potentially even the mayor, although I think she's being forced to eat a shit sandwich right now and there aren't a lot of easy decisions to be made.

But, if you would have read the article I posted, and I'm guessing you didn't, there are a lot of people dedicating their lives to reducing the violence that has plagued and devastated their communities. The problem is always going to be that when gangs and the drug trade provide the only escape from abject poverty, violence like this will always exist. Hopefully not at the absurd rates that exist right now. But it will always be a part of urban poverty and urban plight. It's a complicated societal and institutional issue that can't be easily explained by my side vs. your side rhetoric and shit posting.

Yep. But it's still funny.

Yeahh, yeah fuck you. Less than 3 months ago we had to watch a bunch of cops kill a guy in cold blood. Instead of his death being in vain - BLM capitalized and we had serious police reforms on the table including qualified immunity, police oversight and police union reform. The closest fucking thing to getting some of liberties back since the Patriot Act.

And now I gotta watch some bitch made motherfucker open his fucking mouth and denigrate the whole movement. Every fucking thing you type out actively works against advancing the cause. Saying BLM is a grift designed to exploit the black community, at a minimum, does nothing but rally a bunch of people looking for an easy way out of a tough conversation. I’ll let you figure out what kind of cover it offers the more rabid.

And it sure as shit ain’t going to stop another round of protests and riots when the next cop kills an unarmed black man. We’ll be back to arguing the validity of BLM after another couple billion dollars in damages.

Preach to a bunch of “I’m not racist I got black friends” all you want but at least setup a GoFundMe or OnlyFans and get in on the game. at least I could respect the hustle.

Anyways, I said my peace. the show can get back on track.

That is a long, circuitous answer to a very direct question. The mayor is Lori Lightfoot who is a supporter of BLM. The President Pro Tempore is Brendan Reilly who is a white democrat and supporter of BLM. The secretary is Anna M. Valencia. She is also a democrat and supporter of BLM. We can go down the entire list but it is a pretty monolithic group.

So in your second paragraph you stated, "that many of the community leaders from black communities have often done a poor job of advocating for the people they represent". You also stated that there is a lot of corruption. Would you think that it is a good idea to keep beating your head against the same wall? Or do you think at some point it might be useful to try something else? Do you think there are better models around the country or is Chicago the best of the best?

Saying BLM is a grift designed to exploit the black community, at a minimum, does nothing but rally a bunch of people looking for an easy way out of a tough conversation. I’ll let you figure out what kind of cover it offers the more rabid.

Given the furious swarm of white responses to you, I think this is very obviously true.

brotha's characterization of BLM is just a lie. It's wrong, it's ignorant, and at its core its nothing really but hurt feelings and emotion.

The question was "who are the leaders in Chicago. I directly answered the question in the first paragraph. Anyone whose reading comprehension is that shitty isn't worth engaging in a serious discussion about complex and nuanced issues like generational poverty, class mobility, the impact of the war on drugs on the black community, civil rights, police corruption, misappropriation of funds allocated for development in impoverished communities, etc. I'm happy to discuss how specific policies have impacted demographics. But you reduce this to blaming it on "BLM" which just means "Democrat" to you, and this thread isn't supposed to be about politics. Nice try, though...

Yep it's an institutional issue.

Would you be more comfortable with the term scam or con?  And how do you know who is white, asian, hispanic, or black on here?  You presumptive racist fuck.

It's not about my comfort, it's about what's accurate. brotha's characterization is irrational.

Scam and con don't really make sense because there isn't really a a clear system by which people are becoming rich off of it, and scams/cons are generally about personal enrichment. I'm sure there are scams and cons using BLM imagery/energy as their basis (I'd guarantee, in fact, we could find scams like those women selling monthly subscriptions to white people about how to be a good ally), but the BLM organization itself doesn't seem to be a scam/con to me.

Specific details regarding accusations would be helpful, but likely not forthcoming.

Are you actually offended that I assumed you were white or are you pretending to be a victim to troll on the Internet?

Because if you are actually, genuinely, personally offended about your race being assumed I would be open to talking about it with you.
