Kansas is Hopeless...

On Wednesday, offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and defensive coordinator Brian Borland met with local reporters to discuss the BYU win and the upcoming matchup with Texas.

Kansas will look to improve to 5-0 on Saturday afternoon as the Jayhawks travel south to take on Texas in Austin. The Jayhawks enter the matchup fresh off a win over BYU, while the Longhorns enter the game off the back of a road win over Baylor. The game will feature two undefeated and ranked teams, as KU came in at No. 24 and Texas came in at No. 3 in the polls this week.

KU was out-gained by BYU 361 yards to 351, but the Jayhawks ran 17 fewer plays than the Cougars. Jalon Daniels completed 14 of his 19 passes for 130 yards and three touchdowns. On the ground, Devin Neal rushed for 94 yards while Daniel Hishaw Jr. and Daniels both rushed for over 60 yards. Through the air, Luke Grimm caught two touchdowns and Lawrence Arnold led the team with 34 yards. On defense, Cobee Bryant forced two turnovers and Kenny Logan got a pick six. Austin Booker led KU with seven tackles and 2.5 TFLs.

If true... that is much bigger news than Kansas fans want to hear about. Leipold looks to be the "moby Dick" of this cycle then and if MSU is coming calling now, there will be many more suitors.

Bigger deal is that he actually agreed to the interview now vs playing footsie through intermediaries till the season is over

I want to believe.

The coaching carousel in college football is about to start spinning as the 2023 season comes to a conclusion later this month and athletic directors across the country make decisions on their respective football programs and who the head coach should be. Two Power 5 jobs are already open in Michigan State and Northwestern and more will likely open in the weeks to come. On Wednesday, there was a social media report from a Michigan-based radio host that speculated Leipold interviewed with Michigan State on Tuesday.During his weekly Hawk Talk radio show on Wednesday, Lance Leipold shot down the rumor and stated his commitment to KU with a similar comment to one he's made in the past."This is the only interview and that's the way it's going to be," Leipold said. "The one thing that happens this time of year, is there's a lot of speculation and things that are happening that are not accurate. As I've said for a long time, Travis Goff and Chancellor Girod have treated Kelly and I extremely well and our family. It is our plan and our expectation that we want to be here and this is going to be the last job that we have."Leipold said he spoke with Kansas AD Travis Goff earlier this week about his first two and a half years at KU since he was hired in the spring of 2021. "I was talking with Travis Goff on Monday and he said 'Can you believe it's only been two and a half years.' I said, well in many ways it feels like five or more because of the progress of the team on the field but also how comfortable our family is, being welcomed by everybody and how much we just enjoy being here," Leipold said.Leipold has led a swift turnaround during his firs three seasons as head coach. KU went 2-10 in his first year after Leipold was hired after spring practice in 2021. Fall camp was the first time Leipold and his staff were able to work with players in an official capacity. KU endured a long losing streak before the Jayhawks upset Texas for the program's first ever win in Austin. In Year 2, KU started off 5-0 and hosted ESPN's College GameDay for the first time. An injury to Jalon Daniels contributed to KU's struggles in the second half of the season, where KU went 1-6 but achieved bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008.In 2023, KU has been a more consistent team. KU started the season off 4-0 and is now 7-2 on the season, with KU defeating Oklahoma and Iowa State in the last two weeks. The win over Oklahoma was KU's first this century and its win over Iowa State was its first since 2008.In an interview with reporters on Wednesday, Goff said he believes the KU program is set up for long-term success under Leipold."You're always trying to make sure you can dissect and understand, is this just a great moment? Or is this something that can be great for the long haul? And I think these past couple of weeks really indicate this is something that can be great for the long haul."

2024 is gonna be fun facing baylor/Aranda

Sources: Kansas to hire Jeff Grimes as offensive coordinator

Grimes won the FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year award in 2021.

ZACH BARNETT      4 HOURS AGO

Former Baylor offensive coordinator Jeff Grimes is expected to take the same position at Kansas, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Thursday. Yahoo's Ross Dellenger first reported the news.

Grimes was chosen by his peers as the 2021 FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year after his spectacular debut on the Brazos. Baylor went from 123rd to 10th in rushing and from 125th to 33rd in yards per play, and in the process improved from 2-7 to 12-2 and Big 12/Sugar Bowl champions.

Baylor's production leveled off over the past two seasons, and so Dave Aranda transitioned from Grimes to former Texas State head coach Jake Spavital, but Aranda's scheme will be a good fit for what Lance Leipold wants to do at Kansas.

Kansas has improved from two wins, to six, to eight this season with an upcoming date with UNLV in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl, and that success earned Andy Kotelnicki the Penn State offensive coordinator job.

Kansas averages 211 yards per game and 5.51 yards per carry on the ground, and those numbers should remain consistent in the change from Kotelnicki to Grimes.

Grimes made his name as the offensive line coach, starting at Division III Hardin-Simmons before moving on to Boise State, Arizona State, BYU, Colorado, Auburn, Virginia Tech and LSU before earning the OC position at BYU in 2018.

Kansas City Jayhawks... 😋

Kansas to play home games in Kansas City this fall.

ZACH BARNETT    21 HOURS AGO

For 2024, they'll be the Kansas City Jayhawks.  $300 million in renovations to Booth Memorial Stadium will push Kansas out of its home for this coming season, and so on Tuesday the program announced it will play its home games in Kansas City this fall.

Non-conference games against Lindenwood and UNLV will be played at Children's Mercy Park, home of Major League Soccer's Sporting Kansas City, and the Jayhawks' four Big 12 games will take place at Arrowhead Stadium. TCU, Houston, Iowa State and Colorado are spared the bus ride down Interstate 70 this fall.

Sporting Park is located on the Kansas side of Kansas City, while Arrowhead is on the Missouri side, making KU perhaps the only team in college football history to play home games in a separate state.

Sporting Park is a roughly 30-minute drive from Lawrence, while Arrowhead is closer to 50.

Having successfully fended off Washington for Lance Leipold's services, KU is looking to build on a 9-4 season with a bowl victory and a No. 23 AP final ranking in 2023.

My alma mater(East Texas State, now known as aggy Commerce *shudders) played and won the D2 National Championship at Children's Mercy Park in KC back in 2017(before the title game moved to Mckinney). It's a nice soccer stadium and has plenty of parking since it's parking lot is practically blended with the Kansas Motor Speedway lots.

No more Fuchs for jayhawks...

Sources: Kansas losing key offensive assistant to NFL

JOHN BRICE    FEB 16, 2024

Scott Fuchs, a college coaching veteran with more than three decades' experience, is set to test his skills at the next level, sources tell FootballScoop.

A longtime offensive assistant coach who's specialized in offensive line mentorship, Fuchs has accepted an offensive assistant role with the NFL's Tennessee Titans and new head coach Brian Callahan, sources confirmed to FootballScoop Friday.

Fuchs, an offensive line coach for all but one season of his career, has been a longtime staple on the coaching staffs of renowned program rebuilder Lance Leipold; he worked with Leipold at Buffalo and for the past three seasons at the University of Kansas, where the Jayhawks have experienced success not seen by the program in more than 15 years.

In addition to those stops, Fuchs -- a former All-America selection at North Dakota State -- has coached at Wyoming, Southern Illinois, NCAA Division II powerhouse Grand Valley State and also for the Bison at his alma mater.

Callahan was hired away from the Cincinnati Bengals to lead a new era of Titans football last month, after the franchise parted with Mike Vrabel on the heels of consecutive losing seasons.

Showcasing his coaching versatility, Fuchs early in his career spent a season as defensive line coach at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

How did Lance Leipold become college football's chief architect? He never stops building.

“He once told me, ‘My job is to make sure that every year, these players feel the growth of what’s going on.'"

Over at The Athletic, friend of the site Max Olson has written a deep, deep, deep dive into Lance Leipold's rise to become college football's most respected architect. The piece begins with the moment a 22-year-old Leipold decided to quit his career as an aspiring law enforcement officer to enroll in grad school and pursue a career in coaching.

It took 20 years in the business for Leipold to land a head coaching job. Despite his status as a former Warhawks quarterback and assistant, he was not a popular hire in Whitewater.

Seventeen seasons later, the 59-year-old is in the final act of a College Football Hall of Fame career. He's 163-60 with six Division III national championships at Whitewater, two MAC East championships and the only AP Top 25 appearance in program history at Buffalo, and now a 3-year progression from two wins to six to nine at Kansas.

As the story states, Leipold is a true CEO coach. He doesn't coordinate either side of the ball, and delegates the nitty-gritty of the game-plan to his coordinators. Instead, as the story lays out, Leipold directs his energy into building the program. No goal is too big and no detail too small.

At Whitewater, Leipold got new facilities, new uniforms, and even fixed the irrigation of the practice fields. At Buffalo, he convinced the administration to purchase a full-fledged equipment truck rather than renting one. Kansas has committed north of half a billion dollars in facility and stadium improvements under Leipold's watch.

The reason I wanted it write about it here is Olson's story touches on something rarely discussed when the topic of facilities is brought up in college football. A new locker room isn't just a vehicle for players to become bigger, faster and stronger: it's a force multiplier.

As Leipold explains, players will become more invested in the program if they know the program is invested in them.

Screenshot_20240308-201339_kindlephoto-3243773.png.a13453daaf3ec089752dcacf7cbdcf33.png

The irony is that Leipold's building of Kansas coincides with what many expect to be the end of the decades-long facilities arms race in college football. This week, Ole Miss AD Keith Carter said his department has shelved planned improvements to Vaught-Hemmingway Stadium, realizing that money will be better spent paying players.

But, it doesn't take a new stadium for players to realize that their program is investing in them. And when college football's full-fledged pay-for-play era arrives, he'll still be coaching at Kansas (he's now under contract through 2029) and finding different ways to show his players that they're not just giving.
