Ted Lasso (Apple+)

as a soccer fan, i really only care about one thing this season: i want to see Richmond in the playoff. the Championship Playoff is the richest game in sports. at the end of every season, there's a playoff to determine who the final team will be to earn promotion to the EPL. TV money alone means the game is worth something like £130M for a club. there's is no drama in sports like the Championship Playoff.

this Troy Deeney goal sent Watford to the Playoff. just watch this:

It was fine, a set up episode.  The dog death was a little bit ham fisted but it served the purpose of a quick plot device to take the guy who scored the amazing bicycle kick goal that should have kept Richmond up to a yip-laden mental mess and allowed for the quick entry of the good Doctor who is clearly going cause an existential crisis for Ted on multiple fronts (prior experience with a therapist, plus his clear role as a players coach more than an Xs and Os guys).  They don't have a ton of episodes to drag out a slow intro of a new character.  Obviously given first meetings a season long plot point is how Ted builds a relationship with her, or doesn't.

A little more inside soccer in this episode as well that if you are not a regular follower of the game, and specifically English one in general could cause a few jokes and dialogue moments to fall flat.

There has to be something to the 1236.

And fucking Roy Kent, all that anger and yet all that quick wisdom.....great character.

And the characters interacted with each other as if they all binged the first season twice through. The way the management team greeted Ted, the media room’s reaction to Trent Crimm, etc.

Man, that Trent Crimm thing seemed like some awkward laugh line at the time. Now that you’ve really put a point on why it was dumb, it really annoys me.

^^^ seriously, watch that. it's one of the greatest sports highlights you'll ever see. tell me you don't want to see AFC Richmond in a situation like that. in my mind a perfect season finale involves Richmond in the Playoff against their rivals who sent them the thai food, with promotion on the line. would be a great set-up for S3, and could really bring Jamie Tartt back into the fold more.

I'm thinking from the preview for the season the big soccer story line may be an FA Cup Run. Seems to fit the dialogue that starts 34 seconds in to the trailer (West Ham United being last non top flight team to win the FA Cup....in 1980). Not to mention in that dialogue if you pay attention to the calendar on the wall FA Cup QF is on it.

I don't think if they plan on this show running multiple seasons they can immediately jump back up to the premiership, that would be too easy.  But, they need the team to excel in something...win something.  it keeps it somewhat realistic (I mean Rebecca may like Ted and all but if he draws his way through the Championship a season after a relegation from the EPL in the "real world" that would be pretty hard to avoid the sack) but more importantly it's the feel good thing Hollywood does.

So perhaps Richmond enters season 3 still in the Championship (and they save your Playoff scenario Derka for the drama at the end of that) and this year is about winning or at least making a very deep run in the FA Cup.  Of course if they win it, the real world will also dictate them playing in Europa, but again this show isn't really about the hard core soccer...but I guess another expanded universe they could play in and generate storylines off of.

Roy is the best character in the show

He's great but I love Higgins. I know she's got a bit part but the pub manager/owner brings it with her few lines. Loved the one about Earl not coming around anymore after all the shitting and pissing in the pub. Then she quipped it was Earl's owner.

I liked when Roy snapped on Rebecca.  Best scene for me.

Honestly I could do with 15mins of just Roy and Keely every show.

That was the best scene for me. It was probably the part that felt the most like Season 1. This opener was just OK IMO.

Heard the guys on The Kick Around on The Ticket talking about it this afternoon. Lasso Season 3 has been greenlit and that will be the end of this apparently.

Sudeikis said in an interview they only intend on doing 3 seasons.

I like when shows do this. Give me a defined story with a satisfying ending. No BS dragging a show out for 5-7 seasons and half of them suck or an abrupt cancellation. Just tell me upfront I’m only getting 3 seasons.

there were a few moments in the pilot like that for me as well.

one that sticks out from the first couple episodes is when he's talking to nate, and nate is like, "here, my niece made it, she loves crafts."  and ted is like, "and i love special glimpses into your personal life."

it doesn't seem like much, but from a writing perspective, to turn a phrase like that, and also give backstory and depth to two different characters, as well as their relationship with each other, it's hard to do.

this show has some really goofy recurring jokes with wordplay, and they almost miss on some of them, but they manage to pull them out.  those are a little cheap, but the characters are so good that i don't mind them at all.  but anyone can do that shit.  the way they have built the lasso character and made everyone react to him is brilliant.

These are my thoughts too and begat from brilliant writers is a character that will only work if the actor expertly executes them, which is why Jason S. is nails for me and one of the rare moments where I think the actor is doing a lot of the heavy lifting-- a lesser actor or character here means little as all the best writing won't land regularly and seem consistent, but too try-hard in between the obvious scenes that would work with anyone (e.g. darts scene).

I binged this series prior to season 2 and think this might be the best television I've seen in many, many years. It's refreshing, as others have noted, but it brings to mind what David Foster Wallace was trying to usher in before his death, the ideas behind the "New Sincerity" movement.

It strikes me that Ted Lasso is the television offering of this and it could not be more appropriate to both the times we've been living through (and continue to) and as something I think DFW would be proud to to call a lighthouse of the movement. New Sincerity is such a counterintuitive punk rock idea because it's challenging you to be nice. To risk being sappy and kind in a world where edge and cynicism is fulfilling and comforting.

I'll let DFW say it best:

Quote

The next real literary "rebels" in this country might well emerge as some weird bunch of anti-rebels, born oglers who dare somehow to back away from ironic watching, who have the childish gall actually to endorse and instantiate single-entendre principles. Who treat of plain old untrendy human troubles and emotions in U.S. life with reverence and conviction. Who eschew self-consciousness and hip fatigue. These anti-rebels would be outdated, of course, before they even started. Dead on the page. Too sincere. Clearly repressed. Backward, quaint, naive, anachronistic. Maybe that'll be the point. Maybe that's why they'll be the next real rebels. Real rebels, as far as I can see, risk disapproval. The old postmodern insurgents risked the gasp and squeal: shock, disgust, outrage, censorship, accusations of socialism, anarchism, nihilism. Today's risks are different. The new rebels might be artists willing to risk the yawn, the rolled eyes, the cool smile, the nudged ribs, the parody of gifted ironists, the "Oh how banal". To risk accusations of sentimentality, melodrama. Of overcredulity. Of softness. Of willingness to be suckered by a world of lurkers and starers who fear gaze and ridicule above imprisonment without law. Who knows.

And ultimately this is what Ted Lasso has done:

Quote

Wallace was trying to write an antidote to the cynicism that had pervaded and saddened so much of American culture in his lifetime. He was trying to create an entertainment that would get us talking again.

starting the season off with dog murder...was a bold move. not sure it paid off.

agree that confident nate needs some tweaking. the rest just seemed like “trailer jokes”, and none of the trailers were that funny.

some setup with the boss, and with jamie, so guess we’ll see. not worried.

Since the beloved, long-term mascot wasn't in last season, IIRC, I didn't really feel much sadness other than I wouldn't want to see any dog die. It was also completely telegraphed with the dog and handler standing off the side of the goal. The only open question was whether it was going to be what was shown, or a Bull Durham hit-the-bull type of moment. Either way they dog was getting hit and most likely dying.

I'm interested to see how Roy and Jamie can play more in the season. I assume Roy becomes an assistant coach or attempts a comeback. Asst coach seems the most likely. I hope they find a way to include Jamie in more than just an occasional cameo. I hate his character but find him funny.

My main fear is a story arc of Ted and Rebecca getting together. This episode set up that she needs someone special and not just ok/fine. Getting together with Ted is too cliched and has a high showkiller potential.

The thing about Ep 1 of Season 2 that seemed weird to me, Where was Rupert? It's been what? 6 months since Season 1 ended? Didn't he get married and now owns 3% of the club? You telling me the guy who was meddling before wouldn't be doubly meddling now that he owns a stake?

I feel like Rupert vs Ted/Rebecca/Richmond is the main conflict as he's such an obvious baddie and they set it up as the substantial risk (well monied, influential, etc.) that is always around the corner from striking and upending the whole Ted charade but he's been mysteriously absent, okay. That felt like a big miss to me.

that would be miles from the concept of the show in my opinion.  it would be season 8 of game of thrones level character incongruity.

but i thought that last episode was quite bad and much closer to some third rock quality sitcom, so who knows.

It wouldn't surprise me if that's where this is headed in all honesty.

My guess to the on-field stuff is that Richmond barely misses out qualifying for promotion this season and maybe the series ends with them earning their way back into the EPL. Winning the FA Cup will require way too much hand-holding for Americans to understand what's going on IMO.

First Ep was OK, my bar isn't that high with these kinda shows.

Not a fan of dogs dying.

Therapist scenes and Yips were good.  And pretty much anytime the guys are hanging in Ted's office make me lol.

I DO NOT like Roy Kent's acting...just kinda cheesy and forced.  And annoying in general.

I did love the shot at Dutch people being rude but not meaning to lol (worked at a Dutch owned company)

Rupert isn’t allowed in the owners box due to the dart game bet. But I agree he will show up at some point. Of course I could see the character hanging out with the everyday supporters to earn the love of the supporters. But he would hate every second of it.

Yea he wasn't allowed in the owners box due to a dart game bet before he was a 3% owner. And we weren't allowed into the SEC because of a gentlemen's agreement lol.

Just seems like a big miss on the part of the conflict writers, but maybe they will dump a lot of backstory and exposition in a sloppy way like a backwards looking montage or in a Luis from Ant man sped up story with Nate the Great narrating or something equally as lame.

Also, I like and am on Team Roy Kent.

awfully early to call this a "big miss".  i think they've earned a little more credit than that.  unless the actor is ill or dead, he'll pop up and have a storyline this season.

also "conflict writer" sounds like a cool job.  very specific and also it doesn't work like that.

Fair enough; you are right that they've earned more credit and I hope to eat my words when they creatively blow my brains out of the water with an awesome explanation and re-introduce the conflict. And yea of course it's not a job title-- what I should have said to be more clear (and with your correction that they rightfully deserve some more benefit of the doubt):

"the writers, who should be more focused on the external conflict of episode 1 which was very real and tense in season 1, seemed to have completely ignored it in ep 1 which is very confusing to viewers (or this viewer at least) and made for a weaker episode and season 2 premiere than big fans of the show expected. Let's hope they have something in mind in the next few ep's to remedy that!"

Funny that their rivals, Brentford, actually won the playoffs last season to reach the top flight for the first time since WWII. Top QPR moment ever is Bobby Zamora's goal in the Playoff final.

The episode was fine. Was a season premiere setup episode. Also Higgins is my favorite ever since the "Caesar you later" line in S1.

so i turned the mets game on, because i'm starting their pitcher tonight in fantasy and the astros played this afternoon.  not 5 min into the coverage, they show jason sudeikis sitting in the front row at the game, and they say, "star of ted lasso".  then the two guys (keith hernandez and gary cohen i think) go on to say they've heard great things, but neither has seen the show yet.

hernandez says he's going to wait until s2 is over, then binge.  the other guy is gonna get around to it, whatever.  so a third guy pipes in, and is like, "i know this sounds cheesy, but you have to watch it, just because of how it makes you feel."  so they're both like, ok, we're gonna watch it, just not right now.

so then cohen says someone texted him (i didn't hear who) and basically says, "you have to watch ted lasso, it's one of the greatest shows of all time, watch it tonight."  to which both of them are like, ok, we'll watch it soon.  then of course the guy who had just piped in is like, "wtf, i say to watch it and nobody cares, but you get a god damn text and now you're running to watch it?"

they showed sudeikis a few times during all this.  they talked about the show the whole half inning.  tylor megill has 5k through 5ip.

I mean if we are gonna go on and on about Rupert missing, when the dude was only in like 3-4 episodes last year and is good as a pop-up villain but doesn't need to be in all the episodes what about Rebecca's hot friend that Ted boned while they were in Merseyside?  Ted doesn't seem like a hit it and quit it type of fella and they both seemed interested as he departed but nothing has come back around on that front yet.

Ellie Taylor is a MILF.

This hits close to home because I was at a Mets game at Citi Field this week.

As an aside, the new LGA terminals are pretty dope.
