Yeah, in my Methodist church, we were explicitly taught about other religions and schools of Christian thought.

Inevitably, that raised the question "are we right and they are wrong?"  The uniform response was that "we believe we are right, but that doesn't necessarily mean anyone else is wrong, they just may have a different path."  There was nothing even approaching "our way is the only way and the rest are fucked."  That may have been deeply implicit somewhere, but it was never said out loud.

I have racked my brain and I cannot think of a single prejudice that was instilled or reinforced by my church upbringing.

Methodists are usually adamant about not being adamant. It will be interesting to see how that holds up with the new GMC denomination.

I've been tracking the formation of the GMC. They seem to be sliding further towards an episcopacy structure that doesn't allow for a divergence of views while the UMC is sliding a little towards congregationalism to maintain a divergence of views.

I have noticed that there are a number of people bringing their grievances into the GMC with their biggest gripe being the "openess" of the UMC. There are some that want to drop the Wesleyan quadrilateral and adopt the Anglican three leg approach since Christian experience can lead to relativism.

I have tried to start reading the bible as a New Years resolution. Beeing reading some of the OT. Pretty wild stuff and there is more to it than the sanitized stories we are taught in sunday bible school class as kids too.

My favorite part is when the “good” God murders all the innocent kids.

I've never read it cover to cover like a novel so I started doing that last year from page 1. I'm using the MacArthur Study Bible, all the notes are helpful.  Really helps to reinforce the gulf there is between the holiness of God and the sinfulness of man (and myself).

God inspired genocide.

Joshua 6:20-21
New International Version

20 When the trumpets sounded, the army shouted, and at the sound of the trumpet, when the men gave a loud shout, the wall collapsed; so everyone charged straight in, and they took the city. 21 They devoted the city to the Lord and destroyed with the sword every living thing in it—men and women, young and old, cattle, sheep and donkeys.

I've read it from cover to cover multiple times and did a stint in seminary school. It's bullshit.

I’ve found AI prompts to be a good starting point for things I’m fuzzy on.

Interesting journey. If you’ve ever typed out your experience I’d love to read it.

The description above sounds like a certain religion for sure.  These are the stories that are told about that part of the world whether it's part of actual documented history, or the mythology of religious gospel.

Still the same old question.  Did the people of the middle East make the religions crazy, or did the gospel turn the people of that part of the world into "blood thirsty in the name of god" lunatics?  A little bit of both I guess.

Thanks Abraham.

I don't touch the NIV, it's been changed to fit evangelical beliefs. Like changing the order of events in the second creation story or changing Elhanan to killing Goliath's brother instead of Goliath.

"Craziness" is not inherent to the Middle East.  The Bible documents, with varying accuracy, an early period of human history during which people were primitive.

If we had similar works documenting contemporary civilizations elsewhere and with a bit of hyperbole thrown in, it would be similar.

The Middle East, though, has remained more primitive than some other parts of the world.  Religion may have played a role in that, but also the conditions, like sub-Saharan Africa.

I don't either. That was a copy/paste convenience.

I use the NRSV for standard reading but have others as well.

I wish someone would combine NRSVUE with NOG

There are apps where you can just flip the translations for compare/contrast. But I don't think that's what you mean with combining. The NOG can send you down a rabbit whole of side study if you are not familiar with the names for God.

Extra biblical! No wonder you said that EO was more original. Might as well add the Ethiopians, the have the book of Enoch.

Well, yeah Christian sects that date back to the beginning carry more authenticity than some church that was invented in the 1800s by some dudes that crawled out of the mountains of Kentucky and Pennsylvania.

In regards to biblical studies this dude knows his shit.

I know it's Rogan so, idk, if you don't like it quit being a pussy I guess.

He pretty much owned Billy Carson and disproved a lot of the bullshit that that dude has peddled.

Seems like a solid guy. YMMV.

I do think he's a *little* defensive on the whole reading ancient Sumerian thing and comes across a little insecure there but I think it's a good listen.

Oh, is that right? Let me ask where Catholic or Orthodox, or any other group is found? I'm sure the Church of Christ is referenced. Not so much other totally in the beginning sects.

That's like saying Alamo Car Rental was founded by William B. Travis because it has Alamo in the name.

Meh, he’s your standard run of the mill apologist misconstruing actual critical scholarship to fit his particular theological view/agenda.  Besting Billy Carson in a debate is the equivalent of high schooler beating a 2nd grader in one on one.

For example:  claiming that the great Isiah scroll (a Dead Sea scroll) is “word for word” identical to the Masorectic text.  No actual scholar would make that claim (in reality well over half of the verses have variance between the two).  Huff does it to make an apologetic theological point as to the infallibility and divine transmission of  scripture.  I.e. “Look how amazing it is that over hundreds and thousands of years that it hasn’t changed even one word!”  And it worked, he got a “WOW!” out of Joe.

Y'all were founded in the 1800s in America. There is absolutely no connection between the modern Church of Christ and Early Christianity. It's a ridiculous claim.

Pretty much every Christian sect without apostolic succession* needs to accept that they are just splinter groups that grew out of previous sectarian disagreements between even earlier derivatives of Christianity.

*Anglican church's claim is a little sketch.
