I do not think it was genius. It was a terrible kick in theory. It rolled another 4 yards because the Falcons players were dumb asses.

But the game winner was clutch. It was not some gimme, especially for him.

IT absolutely was a genius kick, because it made them think.  You don't have time to think it that situation.  You are taught not to jump on ball before 10 unless you are 100% certain you can fall on it without the ball squirting out (that ball had enough spin on it that it would've been tricky for one or two of them), and especially if it looks like it will not go 10 or will go out of bounds.  That ball took a dive right, when the entire trajectory it looked to go OB or not go 10.  He may not have practiced it much, but he did enough to know exactly how it would spin.  It was a brilliant kick, and it was a colossal screwup by ATL.  There's a time to know what you're taught, and a time to make shit happen.  They thought about what they had been taught and didn't react quickly enough once things went south.

I'm pretty sure they won't be taught to wait anymore, just get it as soon as you can. With the new rules, it seems that the only possibility of recovery is for it to "pop" out and your hands team should practice clean recoveries.

I disagree. They had a wall of players around that ball that could have easily fell on it. It didn't have any weird bounce to it. They could have easily fell on it with some ease. They just fucked up royally watching it roll and roll.It isn't like it took a steep turn or roll away from everyone. They literally just sat and watch it roll. There was no difference than trying to jump on it in that situation before or after 10 yards. If the ball squirts away in either instance, the kicking team can recover for possession.

It's also not live ball until you touch it.  Which is why if you think it isn't going 10 yards, you don't touch it to make it a live ball.  It's also a penalty on the kicking team if it doesn't go 10 yards.  Yes, they should have jumped on it, or attempted to.  But the spin and trajectory made them think.  Lots of athletes fail at what they're doing when they think rather than react.

exactly.  it was perfect. they were forced to make a decision vs. just reacting.

the initial trajectory made it look like it wasn't going to go 10 yards or even close.  then it started to turn...he kicked it exactly like he wanted to.  there is a reason he kicked it so it was spinning towards atlanta instead of just kicking a knuckle ball.

none of them wanted to be the guy to touch it before 10 yards and make it a live ball if they missed it.

certainly not one kicked like that.  the kicking team would want to shorten the distance between them and the receiving team as it gives them a chance to hit the guy who attempts to touch it first.

Russ is gonna throw 6 TD this week to 6 different people.

DK, Lockett, Swaim, Dissly, Carson, Olsen.

or maybe 4 to DK and 2 to Lockett

Diggs gonna give up several TD passes to Dak

FIFM

This has all the earmarks of a 45-38 type game with obviously Russ coming out on top.

Now watch it be a 20-17 slop fest.

I think Russ could play the entire game with his eyes closed, trust that he has the timing with his wrs, and he’d still put up 28 points on this defense lol. We have zero chance at stopping this offense. Especially with Chido and brown out. Our corners are fucked. If Stephan Gilmore is struggling with Metcalf, imagine what he’ll do if he gets isolated on Worley or whatever other JAG we have at corner.

I don't disagree at all, which is why I've been saying like 45-38 all week. But as is common in the NFL, when we think we're going to see a shootout we end up getting a slog fest, and when we think we're gong to see a defensive game it turns into a shoot out.

BTW the Seattle Defense is going to give up a ton of yards/points as well.  All it really depends on is another slow start or not.  They can't afford to have a couple of quick 3 and outs or early turnovers.  Open up the offense early and let Zeke eat late...not the other way around.

I can get behind that final score. The real question is, how did we get there? A back and forth game from the start where they had the ball last. Or is it going to be like most of our games where we shit our pants in the first half, get down 31-17, they let their foot off the gas, we come storming back, we say “where was this team in the first half”, and ultimately we lose 45-38.

it wasn’t.  we got incredibly lucky because the falcons are poorly coached.  it was a terrible kick that should have easily ended the game.

next question.

It was genius because it was attempted, and it worked.   Unlike anything Mike White has done in the league, including staying in it.

Well holy shit.   He still has completed fewer tasks in the league than that brilliant onside kick by Zuerlein

the onside kick was awful.  if he kicks it the same way 100 more times it’ll get recovered by the receiving team exactly 100 times.  it required a flukish amalgam of poor coaching, hesitancy, and incompetence for that absolute joke of an onside kick to work, and it will never, ever work again.  good day.

I’d bet you a Mike White jerkoff Jets jersey that it will work again this year before the typical bounding ball kick does.

10000000% this

Not only because that's the way of da boys, but it is also the way of the Hawks. The game vs Atlanta was over halfway through the 3rd quarter and they went prevent the entire rest of the game, giving up almost 500 yards through the air but it was all meaningless.

boys need to target and attack Ugo Amadi the new nickel that's replacing Blair, and attack Brooks the rookie LB either at SAM or WILL (if KJ moves to SAM).

Besides that, the seattle db room matches up with the boys wr room fairly even. Zeke vs Bobby is always fun to watch. On the flip side though the hawks wr room is going to go crusade level murder on the boys db's and y'all are hurting at LB too from injuries. boys O vs hawks D is a good fight. The flip side will be murder all day

On the onside kick, what is the logic behind kicking it like that?  It worked, but it seemed to be more of a fluke than some great kick.  99 times out of 100 the other team is just going to fall on it before it crosses 10 yards.  What is the strategy for a successful onside kick under the current rules?  I don't even know what the rule changes were other than you can no longer just blast the other team as they are waiting for the ball to come down from a high bounce.
I'm behind quite a bit on the chat..but if it hasn't been answered yet.

The chances on that kick were less that 2% probably...with the new rules the best options are a high bounce and hope you out jump other team...or do it waterboy style and just try to peg a guy with the kick and catch the rebound

Hey Zeus Kreesto, this thread is a beating.  Any blind dead horse can see in the replay that the ball was headed straight out of bounds or stopping short of 10 yards.  Only a poorly coached player would have attempted to recover it.  Whether possessed by the bullet that killed JFK, blown by Santa Ana winds, diverted by divine intervention, or steered by a glob of Vaseline from Charlie Hough's cap, the ball made a sudden miraculous turn that resulted in it travelling the required 10 yards.  It totally caught the Falcons flat footed, and they still almost made the recovery.

Was it a low percentage kick?  Um, yeah...just like every other onside kick in the history of American football.  Did the Cowboys get lucky?  Um, yeah....just like every other kicking team that has ever recovered an onside kick.

Is Zeurlein some sort of trick shot kicking genius who can replicate this feat on demand, or was it blind luck?  Time will tell, but who gives a shit?  No matter how good a kicker is, it will still take a lot of luck for an onside kick to be successful.  I suggest that the Cowboys only try it when absolutely necessary (such as last Sunday), or in rare surprise situations.

Should the Cowboys need a successful onside kick to beat the Falcons?  "Should's" got nothing to do with it.  Take the win (or loss), you ridiculous pussies.

Once upon a time (like, as early as last year) I thought Carson Wentz was a better qb than Dak. And that wasn’t exactly an unpopular opinion. But man, he’s gonna get benched for Hurts if he has another game where he’s this inaccurate. He’s been arguably the worst starter in the NFL through 2 weeks.

Yeah last year is probably when the separation occurred for most people. And honestly before then, the people who liked Dak over Wentz were just factoring durability more than anything about their play on the field.

Lulz.  two bad games during a pandemic and now he’s a bad quarterback.  don’t forget he beat dak’s ass last year to win the conference.  and he was throwing to arena league players; dak was throwing to amari cooper and michael gallup and handing off to zeke.

it’s fucking adorable that most of the posters think dak is the better qb.  at no point in his career has he ever done something to prove it.  but, sure, whatever you guys say 🙄

No Carson Wentz fan here. Feel he's been overrated since his rookie season.

That said, I doubt anyone outside of Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, or Patrick Mahomes would look good trying to throw the ball behind Philly's O-line right now.

Uhm.......

Protection was an issue in the 2nd half of the Washington game, but it was no issue vs the Rams.  They gave up no sacks and few pressures, he's simply in a funk with his mechanics and and his foundation and footwork.  What you get is sailing passes and a lot of inaccurate throws.  Even in the above video, Wentz understands and makes the appropriate read the majority of the time, he simply is delivering bad balls.

There are some issues every since he got hurt.

Wentz is still an ultra talented guy with tons of physical attributes.  His teammates seemingly have his back during these two games where he's struggled so I think he'll be okay, but he has to get his mechanics figured out.  Some think he's over striding, an issue he's had in the past, other's posit his front leg his too stiff.  I think he'll most likely figure it out and he has an awful Cincy D to get well on but then has two away games which looked like losses but could be wins now.  @ SF, who is reeling with injuries and @ Pitt for a cross state brawl.

Dak has played miles ahead of him this year, even against a common opponent.

Fuck that pussy Wentz.
Been saying he's a pussy since his rookie year. He's had one good stretch in his entire career. That was in 2017. That's it. He's taken a total of 4 playoff snaps. His teammates don't respect or like him. His backup played much better than him. Dak has actually won a playoff game and played in 2 others. His team likes and follows him.

Wentz is nothing more than a product of East coat bias and the media trying to will him to be some superstar.

Someone broke it down really well, but he’s actually getting pretty decent protection. Wrs are getting open, and everyone is doing their job. Wentz has just been god awful

Decent protection? Someone missed Philly's season opener. Wentz spent more time on his back than a lot lizard.

Again, I'm no Wentz fan, but that line is shit.

You're the one who went all haywire in the response with "Fire e'ryone associated with special teams because they all suck!"

Yep.  It's my fault.  LOlz.  You're so fucking reasonable.

I read yalls back and forth and you're absolutely right actually, if Atlanta had tried to dive on the onside and it squirted out for a Cowboys recovery, people like dr beeper would be excoriating the Falcons for trying to fall on the  ball because it definitely didn't look like it was going 10 yards for a long time.
