With Ewers starting, Gunnar is likely gonna be important in sustaining drives for Texas offense on Saturday...

Going into last year's Red River Rivalry game, Texas Longhorns tight end Gunnar Helm didn't know what his role would look like.

Starting tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders was battling the injury bug and didn't know if he would be able to play. Helm embraced the challenges and had his season-high of 67 receiving yards and one touchdown in the loss to the Sooners.

Now, a senior and known leader in the locker room, Helm expects and embraces the extra work. He topped his previous season high in receiving yards when he had 98 in the Longhorn's win over Michigan. Part of the star-studded Texas receiving core, he can sometimes get lost in the hype but knows the importance of his veteran role.

One of the main areas that Helm brings experience is playing in the Red River Rivalry game. Last year, Helm's touchdown gave Texas the lead for the first time all day. Quarterback Quinn Ewers found Helm, who had been left wide open in the middle of the field with a clear path to the end zone.

"It was fourth and one we were going into on their side of the stadium," Helm said. "And so, you know, obviously everyone expects a run play, downhill run play, and got fortunate enough that they busted their coverage and just kind of slipped through wide open and the rest is history."

Though Texas was not able to hold onto its lead and ultimately lost the game on a late touchdown by the Sooners, Helm knows this team is different. Texas' receivers may be star-studded, but they lack experience in this game, something that Helm has gained through his four years at Texas.

Helm knows that his fellow receivers have played in big games and know what comes with that, but the State Fair is a different beast.

"One of the most challenging parts about this game, actually, is bringing along the young guys who haven't been a part of this," Helm said. "The transfers, obviously, they've played in big-time games as well. Isaiah Bond, coming from Alabama, playing in the Iron Bowl, playing against LSU, and these big games, these prime time games. Matt (Golden), coming from a big program like Houston, Big 12, beat a lot of great teams. I'd say the biggest challenges (are) the young guys who are new to college football, the guys that play a lot for us, so just keeping them reeled in, not letting them lash out and be emotional."

In a game where emotions are at an all-time high, it is expected of the veteran players to keep the younger players on task. No matter the rankings, Oklahoma always brings its a-game, and it's the same for Texas.

This year, Texas is ranked No. 1 going into this game for the first time since 1990. Helm and the rest of the Longhorns are seemingly up to the task of beating the Sooners, something is a challenge every year.

The Red River Rivalry game will kick of on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 2:30 PM and be broadcasted on ABC.

Am I the only one who thinks those who write for a living should demonstrate an understanding of the difference between core and corps? Text messages and bulletin board posts are one thing, but paid and published content shouldn't appear to have been written by Aggies.

Year after year this game comes down to rushing and the extra hard plays. Great hustle play Silas.

Love how Bolden slowed down to gain firm control of the fumble recovery inbounds!!!

PLAY OF THE GAME !!! 🤘

The downfield blocking (and general hustle) by these guys is 2004/2005 like.   And it shows big time.

Everyone blocks their ass off this season, and I'm here for it.

Although, I did see Majors get blown up once (I think he was off balance and someone rushing hard.)

It looks like Sark has just tightened up the WR rotation at Cook’s expense.  He played 19 snaps against Michigan.

Golden played almost every snap (60 of 64) against OU. Wingo and Moore each played 36 snaps while Bond and Bolden played 19 and 13, respectively.

Only 16 players on offense played more than 5 snaps.

This timestamped question and discussion is a bit weird coming from someone that is related to Johntay. OTF probably should have just ignored that superchat tbh

Any news on Bond?

Bond, Golden, Bolden, Wingo, and Moore are just playing better than him.

I think Bobby handled that well.

There's still plenty of time for Cook to shine. He looked good on his 2 touchdowns vs. UTSA.

But the drop on easy TD vs. Miss State was bad. That was on 3rd down and basically a turnover that kept the game closer and helped MSU to continue to stay in their conservative offense and drain the clock in the 1st half.  And on his completion (from a perfectly thrown ball by Arch in stride) near the sideline where he got tripped up, that's a touchdown from Bond, Golden, Moore, Wingo, etc.

I know he's not very big, but he still looks a little heavy/bulked up when running out there. Wonder if trimming 5 pounds would help. I haven't paid attention to his blocking, but I know how important that is to Sark and WR coach.

love bolden for the hustle play of the game that kind of put the game on the trajectory for a blowout.

but my god, that mother fucker is trying to get me to stroke out with his punt return decision making. it has all worked out so far but there is literally nothing i hate more in football than punt return fumbles and i sweatergahd, i am to a point where i have to look away on our punt returns.

He came in the season 5/6th spot at WR. He is solid WR. I dont where he fits in with this current group. Wingo is struggling to snaps and he is averaging 25 yards a touch. Whose snaps would you take away from to give to Cook?

If you are talking about WRs that need more snaps, I think Wingo has earned them. After that I would say Bolden.

Wingo is behind Bond and Bolden is behind Moore. Bond, Moore, and Golden have produced 51-767-9 so far on the season. Both of those guys are behind players that are producing. It's good to have 6 guys in the room so that when the backups come in the defense doesn't get plays off. The next 3, 31-510-5. Add in TEs with 25-339-2. This is a dream scenario for Texas.

You want to maximize the offense, Sarkisian needs to move away from 12 personnel because Davis being on the field takes Moore, Bolden, or a RB off the field. We were much better against OU in 11 and 21 personnel.

Preface all of this with I dont know shit.   My gut tells me we wont see any 12 this week.  It packs the box allows their speed LB's to cover the flat plus it brings the DT's tighter.  I think we roll out the Michigan game plan and spread them out all over the field.   IMO QE plays best when the short passing game is used early and often. Rythm, flow, down and distance etc.. is where he excels. Duh, could say that about anyone I suppose.   Sark will try and get UGA in to Dime all game long and take a LB off the field.

Appreciate the updates on Cook. I didn't remember seeing him Saturday.

I agree on dropping a TD in a conference game. That sends you to the back of the list.

Silas Bolden made a great block, before he recovered the fumble for a TD. He's been putting in the work.

UTboy isn't related to Johntay. He's just someone from Desoto.

Moore has earned his spot with his blocking and hands, definitely the surprise of the year for me.

Agreed. I watched the interview he did with 3rd and Longhorn in the offseason and came way extremely impressed. Pumped for his success so far this season.

Sark and his guys have truly made this roster multiple and succeeded in getting everyone bought in.  If you look at TD's on the season it's pretty evenly distributed.  I wouldn't worry too much about Cook's position in the pecking order right now.  They are mixing up the depth chart every game to put our guys in the maximum potential for success.  Cook could've been tied with Bond on receiving TD's if he doesn't drop a walk in TD against Miss St.

not just that, he has been the one to break us out of our fucking offensive funks the last two games.

against miss state, we were really struggle bussing the offense after blue's first momentum killing fumble. right before half at 7-3, moore made a phenomenal over the shoulder catch from arch for a td to make it 14-3 and give a slight bit of a relief after the offense bumblefucked its way around the field after the first drive of the game.

against ou, we had not gotten a single fucking first down in the first quarter with everything being dogshit for a whopping 10 yards of offense or something. the second play of the second quarter on 3rd and 5, quinn threw a ball to the sideline that moore had to make a challenging catch on to get his foot in. 26 yard gain, first real positive offensive play of the game, catalyst for the drive that ended in a touchdown.

It's crazy that Cook is the 6th best receiver. I'd rate them Bond, Wingo, Bolden/Golden, Moore, Cook so far with Moore probably passing Bolden and Golden as the season progresses.

Golden is getting more playing time than all you mentioned. He and Bond are clearly 1 and 2

Pate lives in Liucci's jock... No thanks.

Pate pushes AcademyA&M, but he has been behind Texas since at least last year.

He has an agenda he needs to push, but he has a pretty good depth of understanding about what Texas brings to the table.

Found video of the terrible throw that Sark was joking about during team's film session😋

When it happened, I remember saying "It's because he has gloves on"... he mucked up the throw.

The second time, no gloves... better throw, although in triple coverage if I remember correctly. Gunnar Helm "Mossed" that catch, beautiful!
