US Open has a sense of humor!

I'm disappointed that Brooks isn't playing - I'd have loved to see the Brooks, Bryson, DJ pairing - the pairings aren't as goofy as they used to be, all lefty's, all hyphenated names, all 2nd place in a major the prior year, etc

I think the only you-guess'ems should be where do you think the cut-line will be, and winning score
I'm picking +7 (2006 at Winged Foot is was +9
I'm picking +3 to win (2006 Ogilvy won at +5)

Brandel Chamblee was on The Ticket today.  he said he's gonna come out tonight on the Golf Channel and pick Webb Simpson to win.  he's 14th in Total Driving and 4th in Total Driving Efficiency.

Webb was the first person I took in my DraftKings team.  He hits the ball straight, and controls his game pretty well.  Built my team around him.

Saw a tweet that somebody measured a blade of grass from the rough at more than 12 inches!

Heard an interview with Phil, said he'd have to change how he plays - used to be able to aim your misses for the crowd and know that the rough would be trampled down, now the rough is the rough

I think someone will figure it out. I'll go -2 for the winner. Maybe +6 for the cut. The tour is so much more talented than it was in 2006.

Does the tree removal since 2006 make the winning score lower (i.e., more opportunities for recovery shots)?

I don't know. A dear friend of our family was the president at Oakmont C.C. when they removed over 10,000 trees.

https://www.usga.org/articles/2016/06/oakmont-restored.html

I don't remember it making the OCC course easier, or scores lower. I think if the purpose is to make the course truer to its original design then I am all for it. Is that what they did with Winged Foot? I did watch the Golf Channel the other night and I think I heard them say they restored the greens to their original sizes, and restored the natural rolling nature to parts of the course as they had become overgrown.

I don't play golf but once, or twice, a year. I like it. I enjoy the major tournaments, as I do for tennis. I flew over Winged Foot a couple years back and it looked really nice.

Spieth off to a sizzling start .. as in crash ‘n burn.

Oh dear. There was footage this week of Jordan Spieth on the driving range looking somewhat lost. It wasn’t helped by him being slotted next to Dustin Johnson, who was crushing drives into the ether. Now we see live coverage of Spieth taking the dreaded cart ride back to the tee after losing his ball following a crooked drive at 11. That’ll be three off the tee. And it comes after a bogey at 1. All rather sad for the three-time major champ, who has slumped to 63rd in the current world rankings.

The befuddled grin as he rode back to the tee was telling.  Probably already thinking about where he’s having dinner Saturday night ... in Dallas.

Probably wishing he went out early tomorrow instead of today so he could have dinner in Dallas on Friday night.

Actually +12 might be good enough for a Top 10 finish.

Nah. People keep saying how hard these courses are and guys keep tearing them up regardless. Obviously WF is going to get harder over the weekend but no one is winning the US Open at 5 over par anymore.

This isn’t Harding Park and merely the PGA. This is the USGA, which attempts to make a horror show for its best players every year, on one of the most historically hard courses ever.

I’ll bet you a lot of money nobody is finishing under par.

There are 11 guys under par right now and half the field hasn't teed off yet. In 2006 only one player shot below par at -1 after the first 18.

There's plenty chance I'm wrong and the other 3 days are just brutal compared to today, or some weather blows in, but I'm not seeing it. These guys are almost playing a different game right now. I'm guessing the USGA is looking at equipment or ball changes so every course on tour doesn't have to extend to 8,000 yards.

i loved it when Matt Wallace had his caddie tend the flag when Wallace was in the fairway about 50 yards from the pin.  it was Wallace's third shot on a par 5.  he promptly hit it fat about 20 yards  and proceeded to make bogey. what a twat.

let's see how this amateur holds up the rest of the round.  impressive start.
