I had a couple of guys tell me it was perfectly fine to cut guys after they'd gone through CU spring practices. Like Deion couldn't have evaluated their film beforehand. He deserves another 1-11 shit sandwich, IMO. He's earned it.

How could he evaluate anyone before spring practice? He got there after the season was over.

Some stuff you can't know who made the wrong choice, because you don't know the call/scheme.  Did the Qb make a bad throw or was the receiver running the wrong route?  What was the defense called on this play?

But if you think Prime Time watched a full season of  1-11 intensive film study before deciding to salt the earth, you have a lot higher opinion of him than I do.

I mean, I'm sure he's not excited about all the attention being on him.

You seen that man's feet? I doubt Neon can even run 10 yards anymore, much less the length of the field holding onto Ralphie.

Hard to know whether he lost that toe more because of the gravity of the injury, technical issues with his index/early procedure(s), poor protoplasm, poor cooperation with his postop restrictions, bad luck, or some combination. I have never had a sports surgery end in an amputation (this is where I would knock on wood if I were superstitious).

edit I say toe, but that’s only because there’s one toe that matters more than the others.

No coach worth a shit is going to evaluate players based on tape when he can wait a bit and do it on the field.

Yeah, his legs are fucked up these days.

Dude... they are a 1 - 11 team which lost by an average of 31.8 points per every loss.

On offense, they averaged 17 points a game. (take into account that after the score got out of control, they were playing against 5th string defenses).

They have not won a road game since the "Vid Year" of 2020.

The stench of losing must permeate every inch of that locker room.

They are like that patient which has a combination of pancreatic cancer,  stage 4 lung cancer, advanced liver disease, ALS, brain tumor and erectile dysfunction.

Clean house.

With the exception of that 1 win, it literally cannot get worse.

So your saying the best coaches wait till the player is on their practice field before they evaluate them???

I remember watching a Colorado game on ESPN when the star of their team was a super recruit named Darrell Scott and this was at a down time for the team and one good running back can't do much for a program and Scott was out the door at the end of the season.

I know that sportsbooks like to hedge somewhat, but this seems like the kind of action of which they can't get enough. If you break it down into the quantum and solve the relevant schroedinger equations, you will discover that the condition "CU championship 2023" has no real solutions.

Colorado finished 143rd in sagarin rankings last season. Thats behind 20+ 1-AA schools. Its reasonable to expect some improvement in Boulder, but handing out "only" 250-1 odds on Colorado is the oddsmakers doing what oddsmakers do.  I'm sure they will take  every nickel of that action they can get.

I see a bunch of people saying he won't have much success in year 1 and if he's going to win, it'll start in year 2.   I don't see it that way.

I think year -1 the team is competitive across the board and at-or-above .500; maybe 7-5.  Deion will probably even get a few words in the conversation for Coach of the Year.  The talent upgrade and a coaching staff that doesn't self destruct should get them there. They do play in the Pac-12.

I see year-2 being the hard year. If year-1 is 6-6 or 7-5, the expectations for year-2 will be sky-high. The massive talent upgrade he's doing now is a one-time trick. Next year he'll upgrade a few players like everyone else, but the improvement in year-2 has to start from the top. Coaching, schemes, player development.  It will be interesting if Deion has that in him.

College Football is my #1 sport, and love him or hate him, the sport is better off with some characters like him.  We lost the Pirate, but we're getting Prime; he needs to have some success to stay relevant.

I was listening to a guest caller on the local sports talk radio station today. He laid out a really logical case that if you are a coach inheriting a team full of no talent scrubs, the fastest way to start winning is the get rid of all the scrubs as fast as possible. Its ugly as hell, but it does make sense. The transfer players and hot recruits won't gel or come together for the early season games, but they could finish the season on a good note and look better heading into next year.

I have a very hard time believing 50+ players on a P5 roster are scrubs, even at CU. Now if they're fuck-ups who aren't going to class or putting in the work, then yeah, go ahead and cut their asses. This season at CU will be an interesting case study in roster management.

Why?  We aren't that far removed from there being 50+ scrubs on our roster.

The thing no one espousing the virtues of cutting an entire roster seem to either grasp or are willing to discuss is: who has Deion used to upgrade the roster? Your post implies that they'll be good once they gel. Really? They didn't add a bunch of 5 stars. They have like two, and one of them is a known flake (McLain). They have a handful of 4 stars.

Below that level, they have a majority of the replacements who are guys named Bob Jagger. Maybe they were highly ranked in HS, but the vast majority of the additions haven't done shit in college. They're mediocrities and malcontents for the most part. So you've got a collection of true freshman and 40 transfers who, for the most part, have never played together, and they're all learning new systems. If you mean "better" by going 3-9, sure, they'll be "better", maybe.

I mean, there are worse bets if your net worth is 8 or 9 figures.

I don't think any of us assumed your net worth was anywhere close to 8 figures or higher, but thanks for nonetheless confirming it with this take.

I heard that stat on the radio, so maybe I was lied to. $1000 is not worth the $250k at that risk.

You've been saying a lot of things in this thread that show you don't have any idea how bad things had gotten at CU.  Lots of kids on that roster had no business being on a P5 roster and the transfer offers they are getting (if they are getting them at all) prove that out.

There is no question.  I don’t get the criticism of Deion at all. Get rid of them as expediently as possible.  It’s the same thing with firing employees you know won’t work out long term.

Their top receiver last year, a freshman, just walked, and they wanted to retain him. One of the few talents from last year.  When you go scorched earth, babies are thrown out with the bath water. Still, what he’s doing is smart.

Now, TCU is absolutely going to assrape them.

While I wanted to hang on to Tyson, he's probably not going to play this year since he is rehabbing from a bad leg injury last year.

If everyone on a 1-11 team is a scrub and needs to go, what is the logic in replacing them with a bunch of portal scrubs, also from losing teams, who also were probably pushed out by their previous coach?

Everyone knows the best way to win is get better players. Better players don't just leave a good situation. So he's probably tampering with players on actual good teams as well and pissing off some of those coaches.

I'm a non-believer

A cursory glance at the guys who left backs up your assertion somewhat. I don't care to count how many "undecided" and G5/FCS transfers came from this bunch. But, if there's a coach who can fuck up a program, it's Karl Dorrell.

If you expect to fail a test badly, copying answers from the guy who usually makes Cs and Ds might help your grade. But be careful; if you are one off on your scantron rows, you’ll find out how much worse than 50 you can score.

It looks a lot like Deion is trying to build a foundation of other teams’ C and D material. If he does it consummately (‘sup, Trogdor), he may win a few games this year. There will be no new car smell next year, though, so he better find a way to start building something.

You're given the Colorado job in December 2022, what do you do?

Option A: Stand mostly pat with the guys you've got from the 1-11 squad. Drive 'em down to Junction to Coach 'Em Up. They told the press they had a ton of fun going 1-11 but you're going to Lunchpail Coach 'em into success by god! They're gonna make a movie out of this!

Option B: Send the 1-11 players away. Fill up on SEC/FSU castaways. See if whatever got major program coaches excited in the first place is still in there somewhere and maybe you can pull it out of them with personality swag and promises of money in the future.

Me? I'm taking B every time.

There's no option where I entice Maye and Corum and Brock Bowers and Kool-Aid to transfer in. I'm at Colorado with limited money and a pathetic recent history.

B is definitely the better option, but it isn’t some amazing master plan by him that is going to result in a .500 season like some delusional posters seem to think.
