of what? success rate? it's a huge part of both FPI and SP+ and is pretty well outlined as a two of the most predictive public performance rates out there along with EPA.

this is an old article from Football Study Hall but if you win the efficiency battle, judged by success rate, you win 83% of the time.

from the same article:

from another article around success rate:

from a Brian Burke OLD article from 2010, i believe this is based on NFL data

I am fairly confident that Oregon is going to put an ass whoopin on Colorado this week. I wonder what happens to all of those ratings after a first loss.

Yup. Everyone wants to be part of the show while they are winning. The hype is going to drop dramatically if they lose the next two unless they are really close losses. Nobody likes being seen with losers.

They have been an afterthought their entire time in the PAC.  This is comical.

UCLA has played in 2 pac12 championship games and are 0-2

CU has played in 1 pac 12 championship game and is 0-1

looks like we were both an afterthought in our time in the pac 12

Earlier in the thread he was telling me how stupid I was for thinking Bryce Underwood might come to CU and that he guarantees he knows WAAAY more about recruiting than I could ever know.  I don't care for people like that.

Depth is the problem.  What I also question with Deon's stated style of raiding the transfer pool over recruiting is long term development of younger players?  Is it better to plug & play someone from another school with experience over HS players with more potential but need time to adjust and grow?

He has openly said the reliance on the portal is only for the first couple of years, then he wants to move to a more traditional recruiting model with more HS kids.  You're right that you need to grow your own talent, but he seems to know that.

So you can predict the outcome of a future game if you know the relative success rates of the 2 teams who haven’t played common opponents? Given the talent discrepancies in college football I don’t see how this can work especially in the first half of a season

idk what to tell you here.

the sample size obviously matters and the major metrics that use it (FPI, SP+ specifically) adjust for opponent strength as part of the process. basically every projection system/tool does - clearly Texas having a SR of 36% vs Alabama obviously isn't the exact same as A&M having a SR of 58% against ULM.

if you think that any analytical tool out there isn't trying to find a way to measure how efficient a team is and using that as part of their metric, either it's a shitty tool or you don't know anything about projections/tools.

this article was updated last week, but is relevant to your comment: https://www.actionnetwork.com/ncaaf/college-football-advanced-stats-finishing-drives-success-rate-against-the-spread

understand that Bill C when he was at Football Study Hall did a ton of research into metrics/data and came up with the Five Factors:

image.png.2ee7dbdf7c0906f4e2167214036ff37f.png

this was groundbreaking back in the day. the action network link talks about them specifically, here is the SR segment:

image.png.5330d0178400e4ccc410a967c02a0026.png

last year, 25 projection systems beat the updated line against the spread by different amounts - the largest real one was Massey which won 408 games ATS compared to 326 that the updated line won. Their system was at 53.19% vs opening line at 50.77% or the the updated line 49.2% - this is from prediction tracker

here is a prettier one that another guy put together: https://public.tableau.com/app/profile/andrew.percival/viz/CFBPicker/Standings?publish=yes which shows 7 systems beating the final line so far this year.

image.thumb.png.f72fb5e62734537d9e0153b3c122a6be.png

same standings sorted by ATS:

image.thumb.png.a72596d911df22308e6ba31fcfcd1364.png

there are all the underling date/metrics/links at the tableau project under the "metadata" tab. they null out pick em games and the project has some nice tools you can use to filter basically any column - from teams to weeks/date to whatever else.

i love the numbers and am a numbers person as i am sure anyone around here is happy to tell you. my interest is from a numbers / projection / analytics perspective, not a gambling perspective BUT there are a ton of folks out there who use the tools to help with gambling, which is fine. just not for me.

Please don't compare CU's one outlier season.  They have owned the cellar.  Not that we've haven't been shitty, but not CU shitty.

you are dumb for thinking any player will go to any school based on him setting an unofficial visit alone. add in that its the likely #1 composite player in the class and that he plays QB and it's even more unlikely.

if you think he's going there, based on what's out there, you don't know shit about recruiting at a micro or macro level.

what i said was that i follow recruiting much closer than you do, and guess what? based on where posts are made around here - i do. i've followed recruiting a long time. i've followed it closely for a long time. i have the track record from folks in the 9.95 sub forum here and at the old site. based on your comments around recruiting in this thread, i feel confident i know more about it at both a micro and macro level than you do.

if you think Underwood is coming to CU based on whats out there right now, then good luck.

as far as i can tell he hasn't even given a quote about the visit to anyone, which typically is bad news. he's the #1 composite player in his class, if you don't think Wiltfong picks up the phone when he calls or

when you consider where he lives (20 miles from Ann Arbor), how many times he has visited one school (more than everywhere else combined), how open Michigan has been about recruiting him as their top target, the relationships with Campbell and Harbaugh, the quotes he has given in the last 2 weeks about JJ McCarthy (don't see him saying anything about anyone else) and the fact that he left town to go to LSU for a UOV, then left that visit and immediately showed back up at Michigan's big summer recruiting event it shows pretty clearly where he is interested in going. very rarely do folks in that situation go anywhere else, much less QBs at the top of their class.

it is what it is.

btw, i just googled bryce underwood recaps colorado visit

here are the Google results, in order:

  1. article from SI talking about his HS game the night before the visit, written before the CSU game.
  2. an article from On3 talking about him taking a visit and how he moved up the visit from the USC game, written before the CSU game.
  3. an article from 247 about him moving his visit up from USC @ Colorado to CSU @ Colorado, written before the CSU game.
  4. a rivals article about Martels Carter's recapping his visit. the only part that mentions Underwood is: " Carter spent plenty of time with Tennessee commit and Buffs target Boo Carter and five-star 2025 quarterback Bryce Underwood" but it does have quotes from Carter in it.
  5. a CBS sports video about him setting his visit for the CSU game, from before the CSU game.
  6. a bleacher report video about him posting a pic from his visit with Deion to twitter
  7. a D Zone Football dot com article about him visiting for the CSU game, written before the CSU game.
  8. a generic link to his twitter
  9. a generic link to his instagram
  10. a BVM sports article about him moving up his visit, written before the CSU game.

the only thing showing he even made the visit was he posted a photo with Deion on the 16th, posted a photo of someone in the stands holding a "we want bryce underwood sign" and a RT of an offer they made to a player at his school. that's it.

he hasn't talked about the visit with anyone, even 9.95ers. he didn't post any text about the visit on twitter. he didn't post any "professional" recruit photos of the visit (which he has in the past on his visits to UF, PSU, tOSU, LSU, Michigan and Bama visits. pics in helmet, pics from Bama had a WWE style belt, etc.) he hasn't scheduled a return visit, official or unofficial. and he hasn't given any quotes as far as i can tell, to anyone - not the local CU 9.95ers nor the national recruiting folks.

that doesn't typically bode well in any recruitment, much less in one with a team coming in very late, much less when the offer was made in Jan of this year and he just talked to the head coach of that school for the first time like 3 weeks ago. much less when its the probable composite #1 player in the class. much less when hes a QB.

again, not trying to be an asshole here but you don't know what you are talking about when it comes to recruiting.

So let me get this straight. A few years ago Prime shocked the world by getting Travis Hunter to switch from Florida State to Jackson State and you don't think he can flip Underwood? Underwood when and watched a barely known QB go from unknown to probably the hottest QB prospect currently. Same kid is reading Coach Prime has his QB working with Tom Brady the GOAT, and sees those fruits materialize right before his eyes. But no way he can flip him to CU right? Wide open offense highlighting the QB who is currently in the heisman conversation with a ton of buzz and coverage around the school.

He got Cormani to flip from Miami just before signing day last year, too - I don't think he ever even took an official visit to CU.  Another one to keep an eye on is Jeremiah Beaman (current Bama verbal and he lives an hour away from Saban).  He was in Boulder this past weekend and enjoyed himself quite a bit.

As I've been trying to explain to @NoName, this isn't just about Underwood - he might come and he might not, but I've never seen anything like this in my life.  Normal recruiting rules do not apply right now.

we went through this like 2 pages ago.

there is a huge, massive difference in Deion recruiting a CB who wants to play both ways and Deion recruiting QB.

Underwood != Hunter or McClain.

you are wrong about him being an unknown dude, he was the #3 overall player in 247's initial ranking of the 2025 class and since then has moved up to #1. he's the composite #1 player in the country for the class of 25. before their rankings came out he was visiting UM, Michigan State and Tennessee. he isn't Josh Jacobs where he comes out of nowhere like 5 days before NSD.

he's taken ten visits to UM, including multiple visits before he was ranked at all by a recruiting service. he lives 20 miles from Ann Arbor. hes out here giving quotes on what he thinks JJ McCarthy looks like in games. he's taken ten visits to Michigan of his 29 overall. +3 to Michigan State, + 3 to tOSU, +3 to LSU. he's giving quotes to every UM 9.95er under the sun, including EJ Holland.

re: wide open offense - Michigan has attempted almost exactly half as many passes as Colorado and has 7 TD passes to CU's 10. they average more yards per attempt (10.22 to 9.09) and more yards per completion (12.91 to 11.61.) Every one of their games has entered garbage time before the game was over. JJ McCarthy hasn't taken a single snap in the 4th quarter yet.

the next time they award a heisman 3 weeks in will be the first time.

if he schedules a bunch of visits to CU then sure - maybe it will happen. my point is that there is not a single data point out there that says "yeah, he's seriously considering CU" and every single recruiting datapoint except one (going out of his way to go to and talk about his multiday UOV to LSU, upon which he immediately went to UM the next day) we have says "Michigan is a huge leader in the clubhouse"

kudos to him in both situations, great players and he recruited both of them to his school.

maybe they will get Jeremiah Beaman. he's taken 8 visits to Alabama and 6 to Auburn, including an OV in a couple of weeks to Auburn. He's been committed to Alabama and those schools are 50 and 100 miles away from home. CU is 1100 miles away from Birmingham.

yeah, everyone acts like Colorado is going to have some insane high school finish to the season. they haven't had a recruit commit in 101 days.

they have all this incredible hype and they haven't landed a single HS recruit out of it, which is truly incredible. maybe they will have a bunch pop off vs USC, we can revisit in 2 weeks.

for comparison, Texas last two commits were Simmons, which was 41 days ago, and Zina U, which was 14 days ago, and both seem like a lifetime.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? Big into liver treatment are you? It was a pretty routine (obviously dirty) late decleating that happens yearly. The guy didn’t go in intending to cause organ damage because he hates Deion Sanders, as Deion himself has acknowledged. As for my medical opinion, Hunter clearly needs to hit the gym less and the bottle more in the offseason and toughen that liver up with some fibrosis.

but yeah, ultimately i should and do know better...i'm really enjoying the wildass ride that is CU right now so got caught up in all of it. oops!

Irrelevant to the conversation and nobody here gives a fuck but Inpatient IM

I’ve worked on the sidelines of football games from HS up to FBS schools for over 20 years and I have seen 2 hits that resulted in kidney lacerations, both before the whistle. Seen countless late hits. Never seen a liver lac. This hit was far from “routine”. The only review I found showed over a 10 year period only 174 visceral injuries across all HS and collegiate sports, so the level of violence required and the state of the injured player — completely unaware a hit was coming and not prepared to protect himself — are definitely noteworthy

isn't the "lacerated liver" comment coming from Skip Bayless this AM, then parroted by everyone around the world? not seeing it confirmed by even a second source and the handful of stories i clicked on all attributed the comment to Skip, who is far from trustworthy.

Um no. That's the actual injury he has.

i have no clue what his actual injury is, all i know is that everyone under the sun is quoting Skip saying it's a Lacerated Liver and running w/ it. my point was that Skip isn't known as being the most truthful person or super interested in running down leads and something could have gotten lost in a game of telephone.

sounds like that would be super super super rare per Sawbonz - not that he isn't hurt or that it's bullshit, but that there is a chance it's a lacerated something else (kidney? spleen?) vs specifically a liver like Skip reported.

if it's coming out from the team and other sources independent of Skip then sure, i may have missed that.

confirmed by BuffZone below.

Steve Edmond lacerated his liver in DKR against Tech from a crack back block. The resulting internal injury is abnormal, hard blindside hits are not. Quan Cosby destroying that OU player was a legal (at the time) hit but similar level of unnecessary violence, if he’d lacerated that dudes liver would we stop jerking off to it every year? It’s football, freak shit happens. The hit was a dirty emotional play that happens every season, nothing more.
