This is probably the only issue I have. I don’t care about test scores. Those tests are ridiculous anyhow. Doing what that front office guy did was pretty cowardly. If you think he sucks just attach your name to it.

There's a major difference between "he bombed his interviews" and what that loser got off his chest.

What he revealed wasn’t exactly a surprise.  But hey don’t fret I have no doubt your boy will beat out Flacco and Pickett.  I think the media has been exceedingly kind to Deion and his kid.    Read the other reports, he wasn’t reports. He wasn’t the only one that dogged sheduer.  The fact that coaches and gms wont openly dog Deion and his boy doesn’t mean they think sheduer is the shit.

One longtime NFL assistant coach said his time with Sanders was "the worst formal interview I've ever been in in my life. He's so entitled. He takes unnecessary sacks. He never plays on time. He has horrible body language. He blames teammates. ... But the biggest thing is, he's not that good."

The assistant coach that said sheduer was entitled and honestly not that good.  You know about a year after Deion said he would t let his kids go just anywhere and a month after sheduer turned down numerous teams and asked other teams what they could do for him

Yes - any defamation type quotes should not be quotes against someone unless you’re willing to put your name on it. Millions ($$) are at stake at this level, not just tongue in cheek remarks to make yourself look better.

one player put it, Manziel throughout the entire 2014 season was a "100 percent joke."

Some said it should not have been a surprise, that the Browns were well aware what they were getting.

"During the draft process, not one person interviewed by the team said he was going to grow up," said one source directly involved in the drafting of Manziel. "You can't blame Johnny. This is who he is. The team knew that."

You think some random, anonymous quote impacts other teams perceptions?  I’d assume that certain confidants share information, but there’d be hope that others are willing to draft guys that’d be detrimental to team goals.

Thats to say nothing of whether Shedeur cares of his perception otherwise he wouldn’t be the person with that reputation in the first place.

When you are the Ball family on steroids I can't imagine why NFL teams aren't lining up to bring that traveling shit show to their locker room.

Then you have Cleveland, but the owner most likely doesn't give a damn because the Feds have been after his ass for years for various business practices so why not roll the dice and if it all goes Viking funeral pyre so be it.

@aggie08  he’s a weasel but he’s putting his name on it :

Rick Neuheisel enlightened listeners on Sirius XM’s Full Ride show on the College Sports Radio channel this morning that an NFL coach told him Shedeur Sanders took a personal FaceTime call during an interview with an NFL coach. Instead of ending that FaceTime call, he stayed on it during the interview,” Javier Morales wrote.

so with the above, may it be possible that god fearing Deion and sheduer may have acted like douches?

This report was just a single story.  He did not drop because of this.  Team draft boards vary wildly from team to team especially on players they deem as true number 1 grades. The Cowboys only had 12 players with a 1 grade.  Other teams vary in number and by player.  They are not based on anonymous sourced stories like this.

the story that popped today is more indicative of why he dropped.  There were only a few teams that need a new starting QB.  But Shadeur had a private visit with the Giants but didn’t throw.  Daboll had sent him a deck to study of some plays, calls, scenarios, defenses for the interview.  Shadeur shows up with zero preparation and his entitled attitude. Daboll calls him on it, Sanders gets angry, and the visit goes south very quickly.  This is with a team they wanted to draft him.  Likely that took him immediately off the Giants board.

if Shadeur did this same shit with the other teams it’s no wonder they dropped him down.  The white board exercise is universal in qb interviews at combine, at pro days, and in private meetings. Mariucci does a master class on them prior to the draft.  If Shadeur pulled this at the few teams he met with no wonder he dropped to 144.  The other teams were told by Deion not to bother.

pulling this shit at a job interview is just stupidity.  Enjoy your draft room Legendary.

Oh, I totally get it. I'm not trying to stick up for Shadeur. If he was indeed as awful as it seems he was, then every team very apparently drew their own conclusion. The assistant coach dude made it public because he wanted to get his two cents in about how he feels about the Sanders' family.

All that said, Sanders falling from the seemingly consensus #2 QB in the draft to the #2 QB...taken by the Browns...is empirically hilarious, so I'm not losing any sleep over it. Can't remember anything like it.

And still 6 QBs before Quinn. Which is insane.

Posted (edited)

We've all typed far too much about this, but that will not stop me from typing some more...

Sanders' physical traits might place him among the top 5 QBs in this draft.  In fact, he might be the 2nd best at footwork, deep passes, etc.  It is a weak draft for QBs.

None of us were in the interviews, but is the leaked information really any surprise?  He asked teams how they are going to support him; he was unprepared for general playbook types of questions; he answered a personal call.  Based on his demonstrated lack of sportsmanship, self-promotion, and finger pointing, what is being leaked about his interviews is no surprise.

That alone would be a serious red flag, enough of one to push him down the draft board.  Then add the family side show, and front-offices have to ask themselves, "Is the juice worth the squeeze?"  Cleveland finally answered the question, "Yes, in the 5th round."

The notion that there is some grand conspiracy against Shedeur or the Sanders family is absurd.  These guys are running businesses and are making decisions they think will improve their businesses.  Drafting a QB in the first round is an tacit message that you believe you are drafting a near-future starter.  No team believed Shedeur is ready to be a starter.  For some folks, that is being seen as racist, or anti-Sanders family, or whatever.

Watch Daboll's interview and interaction with Jayden Daniels from Hard Knocks.  It was fascinating and Daniels was impressive enough that Daboll said he was worth trading up for last year.  The Giants traded up for Dart this year.  Daboll, et al. believed that juice was worth the squeeze - and the cost - to get at #25.

As noted previously, there are claims that Dallas had only 12 players with first round grades.  Perhaps they only ranked 12 because they were picking 12th.  Regardless, each team has a list of folks they are willing to (1) make a first round investment in and (2) borrow from the future to get in the first round.  Shedeur was not on those lists, obviously.  For many, I suspect that list contains fewer than 32 names.  32 will eventually get picked, of course.

If Sanders is really as good as he, his dad and his sycophants believe, then it will be obvious and every other team will have missed out.  And he'll ultimately get paid in 4 years, all while selling loads of "Legendary" swag.

I know this has already been discussed but there are some aspects that people have pointed out and others that have not been noted.

First, Shadeur is a 23 year old millionaire, not a "college kid".

Second, as for doing so anonymously, Deion has consistently and repeatedly attacked, on every platform available, any negative word said about him or any of his kids or methods. More times than not he does so with the race baiting methods. Beyond that, like it or not, Deion has become a massive influencer that effects perceptions of the broader media massively. Whether that influence is direct capitulation to Deion's "cause" or his and his children's "Amazing Ability" or more of a Mandela effect, its clear by all the predictions and hell, I saw it right here by posters that claimed Shadeur was amazing. Deion's influence can and I'm sure has ended careers unfairly and unjustly.

Now, keeping effective massive Deion Grift Propaganda machine in mind, let's put on the shoes of an NFL team front office guy.

You and your team are already aware that this arrogant, rich, teammates bus tossing, no accountability, janitor assaulting, under talented POS has actively said he would not play for and refused to interview with teams. However, your team is one of the "lucky" ones and Shadeur agrees to interview. He comes in and is a complete diva star, disrespectful and insulting. He's interviewing for a job on YOUR team/company and acts like YOU and the team are lucky he showed up and would be blessed to have him. Based on the fact you know he sucks as a QB and teammate, you suffer through his bullshit and he goes on to the next NFL team office to do the same. Perhaps you call your friend that works for the other franchise and laugh or perhaps his entitlement bullshit and the now 3 years worth of media propaganda around Deion and his grifting father piss you off.

So, I'll ask you directly @aggie08(and anyone else taking an arrogant 23 year old asshole millionaires side) how do you feel about tyrannical leaders/grifters, their minions/children and their on going never stopping propaganda machine that serves only to feed their grift?  I know it's hard to imagine such a grifter/propaganda machine asshole outside of college football/NFL but just try and use your imagination.

If you knew the cost of speaking out against one was absolutely going to put you in the headlines as a racist (I know irony right) and it would 100% end your career given the power of that grifter/leader would you? Would you be willing to throw away your, perhaps decades worth of work, and career to voice your frustration? End your career and likely need to start from the ground up?

Would you instead, like all others in the process simply remain silent and let the leader/grifter and his minion continue their steam roll?

Or would you perhaps speak anonymously to a reporter to vent your frustrations and make others/media aware of the reasons (of which there are many) that SS fell so low in the draft so that the race baiting propaganda narrative of Deion the grifter is a little more tarnished?

Which path would you choose?

I'm not saying there is a right or wrong answer, but imo 1 is ethically bad, and 2 ethically and morally a better path. So it comes down to what would you being willing to sacrifice? Career or your morals and ethics.

Surly. Because moral philosophy demands we plumb its depths.

I use an anonymous handle to reduce the risk of harm to myself or to those around me in case some stranger goes ape in response to what I post online. I try however not to post anything I would not say in person. I root against institutions shamelessly but try not to tear down individual people.

If a team official believed he was protecting other teams who truly needed the negative information and who (he believed) lacked it, both passing it along and doing so anonymously would seem reasonable. My sense (witness the public discussion re the Sanders family previously) is not that the leak was truly altruistic and necessary, but I obviously can't know.

Well, it's a moral question worthy of discussion not just for the specifics of the situation but for the grander aspects of it's implications. Dismissing it to only respond is a lot like "this thread is stupid and you all should stop posting in it".

You protect yourself from a bunch of internet poster with anonymity for your opinions, yet claim a moral high ground for a person doing the same. Further irony.

You say you rail against institutions yet never rail against individuals, does that hold true in your political, business and sports discourse on Surly? Have you posted anything negative about any individual people here on Surly in anonymity in the business, sports or political arena? I really don't know the answer but if you have, that's pretty hypocritical.

I'm not claiming the person did so altruistically, and my post made that pretty clear, but I'll state it here again in case it wasn't.

It appears your answer is you would say nothing and let the propaganda machine of Deion continue, but your response was ambiguous, imo, so I'm not even sure about that conclusion.

I just really hope Cleveland is one of the places he refused to interview and based on historical comments from Deion along with Cleveland QB history it seems likely.

That, quite possibly, SS was drafted SECOND by a team that he refused to interview with is... so. Fucking. Delicious.

The gift that keeps on giving for me is the fact that I see Sanders memes all over the Internet, and all of them making fun of SS.

There’s one thing the arrogant and self-important do not do well, and that is being ridiculed.    You know that both of those Sanders have skin thinner than a 98-year-old nursing home resident.   It’s not the loss of money that is so satisfying, but the fact that the entire country is talking about what losers they are, and that every social media and article online is essentially dunking on all of them - the exceptions of Stephen a and Mel Kiper show just how correct everyone else is.

A truly glorious end to the draft.  I only wish that Graham Mertz had been selected ahead of SS.
