I’d say not so fast my friend on that national coach of the year.

If he wins 8 games it would be hard to argue against him. I don’t expect it but the fact that it’s even still in play at this point is pretty surprising

He launched that entire team into the sun and built an entirely different team in the portal. I believe there are fewer than 20 scholarship players from last year on this year's team roster. He fired that whole team, he didn't teach them how to play, he threw tthem away and started over. Last year is irrelevant when talking about Colorado.

First, so what? He transformed the program. According to Deion in an interview with Erin Andrews that aired on Big Noon Kickoff, he only sat down with 20 players and told them there was no future for them at Colorado. The rest quit.

When Bo Schembechler arrived at Michigan, he worked his team so hard that there were players walking off the practice field and quitting every day. He hung a sign in the locker room that said, “Those who stay will be champions.” It still hangs there today. He’s revered for it. What’s the difference? Deion didn’t invent the transfer portal. He’s just using it to great effect. Last year is completely relevant when talking about Colorado. He’s the coach and this is his team. Oh, he’s nothing special as a coach, he just brought in good players? Nick Saban says hi. Isn’t that the path most successful coaches travel?

Lol you think the rest actually just quit without encouragement? It was the right strategy for sure but that part is make believe.

If they can’t cut it, they can’t cut it. That’s their choice. Hard work is the “encouragement.” Sounds like the same kind of encouragement Bo gave his players. He ran off around 70 players. That’s more than Deion ran off. No one criticizes Bo, though.

I’m not criticizing him I just think it’s a laughable concept that 37 left a scholarship at CU because they “couldn’t handle hard work”.

Really? That’s news to you? That the standards at some programs are much higher at some programs than at others? You think the players Deion inherited at Colorado were putting in the same amount of time and effort in the weight room, at practice, and on their own time? Showing up at all the “voluntary” workouts, etc?

What evidence can you point to that shows they were working hard prior to his arrival?

Edited to add coaches have been running players until they quit as long as there have been coaches. If you’ve ever been around a collegiate program, hell, even some high school programs, who get a new coach, you know that is standard operating procedure.

I’m sure all 37 of those shitty players quit all on their own because they couldn’t handle the culture instead of because they suck at football and were told they were going to be recruited over.

I don’t give a shit why they quit do you?

The point is they sucked and now they are sucking somewhere else.

Well, the comment I responded to was arguing that they left because they couldn’t hack it instead of because they were told to. So hence my response. I’m not sure why you inserted yourself either man.

The fact that they left pretty much proves that they couldn’t hack it. And it’s pretty easy to believe that they were run off without explicitly being told to leave, weird that you are pushing that angle. Again, it happens all the time. As for my comments, it’s a public message board 🤷‍♂️

This sure sounds like being encouraged to leave vs just quitting because it’s hard. Sounds like we agree.

Which is what what the buck said Bo was doing decades ago. Sounds like you  agree.

* unless you’re naive enough to believe Bo was only making it hard to make them better and not running certain players off

They were not working hard prior to his arrival. This is known.

Is there evidence they weren’t? This actually a serious question, not the normal surly for sake of argument.
They admitted it. Saw a podcast where a player said last year was the most fun he ever had playing football and that they didn't have to work all that hard. It was fucking summer camp.

Lulz. Why do you care?

Fuck, we are having a conversation. Someone said credit Sanders for taking the team that got destroyed by USC last year and got them to only lose by one score to USC this year (paraphrase). I pointed out that it isn't the same team at all. I really don't care that he told the team they didn't make the cut and only kept 20 players. The point is he didn't coach up last year losers he got new guys. So there are now more 4 and 5 stars on the Buffalos roster than probably the beginning of ranking players with stars for all I know.

He has used the portal in a way no one ever has in football and he did a great job.

You are arguing with something that was never said.

I’m sure some left because of weight lifting and being yelled at, I don’t think the overwhelming majority (37/50) did. I think they left because they were told replacements were being brought in. And they needed to be.

I thought P5 scholarships could not be pulled based on performance; meaning the athlete has to quit. It seems pretty weak to quit because you are told the coach is trying to recruit over you. That’s the case for all but maybe a couple of guys on any team. Had they not quit I’m sure there were endless Oklahoma drills in their future

Don't know about the rest of the P5, but Pac 12 schollies are guaranteed. Roster spots are not guaranteed. Every single one of them could have finished their education in Boulder for free.

Most schools only guarantee the scholarships one year at a time I thought.  Maybe I’m incorrect.

My daughter's high school volleyball coach literally brings kids into the room and tells them she doesn't see a place for them on the roster going forward. Pretty common practice being honest with a kid. One of our defensive specialists was told that, fought for a spot anyway, and now is a crucial player in their rotation.

Right. I wasn’t arguing against this happening, quite the opposite.

I think even the kind and gentle Mack Brown did this

NCAA only requires yearly scholarships but I think to be a member of P5 one of the stipulations is fully guaranteed scholarships

The impact of Deion on CFB is still to be fully realized but so far I would imagine there are a lot of ADs noticing. Wondering how they get some of that magic to moribund programs, can they change expectations with the portal and NIL to demand faster turnarounds, how to get media attention. Wishing they were setting up boxes for celebrity attendees.

Why give a new coach a five year contract when you can use the portal to fix the problems fast? Let’s see what you can do in three. Can you drive enough media hype to get Game Day here? Can you get the Rock, and Taylor Swift, and JayZ here for a game?

There will be a ton of schools firing coaches at the end of the season. How will Deion affect the decision process on new hires?

Very little to not at all, imo.

Programs are already aware of the portal and NIL.

“Deion did it, why can’t we” is a lot like asking why don’t we just get a front man like Mick Jagger, Bon Scott, Robert Plant, Gerard Way or whoever. The media hype is based on Deion and grew because CU got off to a fast start after a putrid season. The process can be imitated. Being Deion, not so much.

I'll believe that when I see it. Ive been hearing that bullshit (along with lowball salaries and big bonuses for performance) for years now, and the AD's keep spreading their cheeks wider when it comes to hiring head coaches. The reality is that there are far more ADs with hopes of winning programs than there are coaches out there that can pull it off. Mel fucking Tugger got a 10 year $100 million dollar contract for fucks sake. Good luck getting your first pick when you are handing out a 3 year contract when everyone else is at 5+. Its not like Deion is working on a 3 year deal.
