I actually don’t think it’s all that hopeful. I see no reason for any of those three to support the nominee and I doubt any in close races in purple states want to take the fall for Trump.

Because they’re all Republicans who have continued to support Trump because he’s paid them what he promised: conservative judges. This was their fucking price, they’re not going to all of a sudden turn it down.

I guess he is also counting on maintaining a Senate majority.  This action guarantees a new Judiciary Act next year with a Biden Presidency and 50/50 Senate.  If he leaves it alone right now, the Dems won't even try to pack the court.

That's the interesting thing here.  Mitch's #1 goal is for he and his Senate majority to keep their majority intact after November - he and his fellow Rs in the Senate, most of them plan on sticking around long after Donald leaves office.

He's giving the Ds a lot of motivation to get out and vote, and possibly to the point where he loses his majority over this.

I guess he's decided that one more Justice is worth giving up the GOP majority.

I see your point. It doesn’t change what I’m saying. They want to get re-elected more than they want to vote for a Trump appointee.

Gardner can’t win in Colorado without independents. Period

Ok good, luckily independents won't support some whack ass bullshit like Gary Johnson...I think we're safe.  Thank you.

Hickenlooper is +29 with unaffiliated in Colorado which make up 40% of the voters. Gardner has all the incentive in the world not to confirm

He might go down in history as the most effective Senate Majority Leader of all time, and that includes LBJ.

It just proves it doesn't take much effort to be a coward and a liar bent on destroying the republic.  Find a moronically stupid and malleable voting base, pander and lie, do the bidding of an authoritarian, and Voila! you are "effective."

One more justice keeps the GOP majority.  The GOP pulls its election lawsuit bullshit, including the frivolous suits trump has already filed, and they're heard by a 6-3 court, including such ethical, honest luminaries as Thomas, Kavanaugh, Alito, and Judge Jeannine Pirro.

Good point.  Ima + rep you.  I think Black Lab gave me unlimited rep points; I think I've hit 50% of the posts on this thread.

Or he knows he’s toast so votes to confirm to make sure he’s still welcome among his own and not brutally murdered by them.

Except he’s from Colorado not Oklahoma.

I think its more likely that some Republicans waffle on this than most of you are giving credence to. Susan Collins is getting ready to get smoked in her Senate race solely from the Kavanagh shit show and everyone took notice.

Mitch McConnell's impact on American history is immense.

Louis XVI's impact on French history was immense too.

These same folks care more about remaining in office long after Trump is gone, so they are probably huddled up tonight with their data folks, and crunching the numbers on what voting for a nominee will cost them among Indies and moderates, and how much it will motivate the other side to come out and vote.

And one of my friends who works for one of those polling/data types of firms responded to my text, and said he's currently on the clock for his company.   And if you get an increase in robocalling, thank people like him.  But just answer the polls, because those things matter more than you think.

I hate to say this, but a lot of that lot is dumb as shit.  Have you not watched any porn?  I'm afraid they'll buy the bullshit they're sold - 'women's rights will always be first and foremost in anyone I nominate's mind.'

No.  Nor should they.  Let the Pubs do their thing so we can rip the bandaid off and there will be no excuse for fighting back with the same ruthlessness that only the pubs can pull off up to this point.

Sounds great--when Dems do this it will be the first time. Obama had the chance to try and push a justice through during recess but because of decorum, did not.  Republicans favor decorum for the other guys but it sure as hell doesn't apply to them.

Yup. Her only hope may be to come out against voting on a nominee.

Trump will joke about RBG dying in one of his rallies.  or at least make light of it.  there will be no sign of respect.

anybody gonna take a peak at texags or tigerdroppings?  it must be like St. Patty's Day and Cinco de Mayo and Halloween and Christmas and New Year's Eve, all wrapped up in one.

they are floating the "hilarious" idea of Trump nominating a black conservative woman for the court to make liberals heads explode. They keep asking certainly there is one... but no on can seem to come up with a name.

It's funny seeing some people still holding out hope.

Sociopaths have taken over America. Game. Set. Match.

These are people that have no idea how to actually create value. They only know how to sequester the profits from value created by somebody else. What's really important about this is that, as they gain power, their utter inability to govern is going to precipitate a dramatic decline in our country's fortunes. And so how do they maintain social order in the face of rapid decline after they've subverted our democratic process? They won't suddenly learn how to actually govern, so instead they'll reach right into their comfort zone of wealth sequestration.

Whose wealth will the sequester? That's easy to answer. Them. Liberals. Jews. Brown people. This may sound like hyperbole to the naive, but I promise, when faced with the choice of admitting they have no idea how to run our country, and keeping their scheme going a little bit longer by playing to the same bigotry they've fomented and capitalized on...

... yeah, we know how this ends.

McConnell said what he said because he knows he’s got the votes OR he thinks losing the vote helps in November. Maybe both. Collins, Murkowski and Romney aren’t necessary. Hell, you could let another vote nay or abstain if Manchin votes yea like he did for Justice Beer!

This one is likely done.

This.  The GOP has caught on to a very important point about lifetime appointments.  Get on the bench young and you've effectively packed the court for a couple of generations.  But it also means you risk elevating someone with less than complete life experiences.  Term limits for the SC should be something looked at.

TLDR: fuck term limits for SC Justices.

Lifetime appointment is the one thing that keeps the SC honest.

Look. A good judge is a good judge. They don’t let politics into play. They apply the law. To. The. Facts. I know. Novel concept, right?

I’ve been in front of great “republican” judges and great “democrat“ judges. Then those great judges get washed out in the next blue/red wave for no reason. It sucks and I wish judges didn’t have run on a political ticket.

If there are term limits...the SC is gonna be a grifter factory. “Hey, rule this way and in 10 years and I’ll put you in the board of company X paying Y million a year”.  It would be fucking terrible

JJ is right thought, ChiTown - don't underestimate those women.   I'm sure there's a joke to be made about Oklahoma women, but there's a shit-ton of women who, in the course of their lives, regardless of their education and voter registration, have run into, or worked with (or for) men that Trump, McConnell, etc. remind them of.

They may ignore/forgive a lot of other shit, but this kind of stuff will stay with them.
