I’m very easy going. Always have been, former college hippie. Have hands full now with 4 kids and Maga leaning, pothead wife. From what I can tell most of my friends and work acquaintances lean right. This place is an interesting view into the “other side” of things.

I'm sorry, but I asked, "WTF?" and laughed at the same time.

When did you graduate?

Because you’re solution is woefully outdated.

I have a kid at Troy University. A perfect example of the kind of school you suggest.

Troy University costs just under $10,000 with all expenses PER SEMESTER.

$80,000 for a diploma from Troy. And that’s if you graduate in four years, which is virtually impossible unless you take a super full load very semester and go every summer.

It’s impossible for a student to work enough hours to pay for college while being a student.
Yeah that's one worst things when my magat friends opine about their concerns about socialism. Shit was more socialist in the 50s. I went to UT in the 90s and tuition was around $1500 a semester for 15/18 hrs
I wrote a check for that shit. Then the leg started defunding higher ed.

My dipshit brother got his Aggie masters for the cost of what one year of Aggie undergrad costs now
Just 10 years later
But he's hopping mad about socialism. Pull the ladder up asshole

It's really fucking special these days when people don't see eye to eye politically and don't want to throw a fit in the floor.

Brother?!?

Very similar. As a 50 year old educated white professional I've had far too many occasions when casual or even close friends will feel like we've reached a comfort point where we can both be "real" and then I start hearing n-bombs or f*g jokes and they'll look at me expecting to hear an accepting laugh.

I asked my dad in '76 (when I was 7) who he was voting for, Ford or Carter. His response was "none of your goddamn business." Classic Scandinavian/midwestern mentality right there. I remember crying because his delivery was so forceful. But the message was clear to me even at that age: my vote is my vote so keep your nose out of it.

Almost 45 years later I've got the same mentality. I don't talk about my positions or voting preferences publicly except for very, VERY rare instances. My FIL has been trying to get under my skin & needle me for almost 20 years but I still won't engage or give him any ammunition to work with.

Even the yard signs are purchased by my wife. I donate quietly. This t-shirt is the most overtly political shirt I own. The only thing close is my "Don't Blame Me, I Voted for Bill 'n Opus" that Berkely Breathed finally officially licensed a few years ago.

I am trying to be my best self Jimmy, but if you are a magnet for racists might be something you need to look into your self.

Why you attract racists that feel that they can open up to you?

There are probably some latent and maybe unintended signals you are expressing that are attracting racists to your orbit.

Like they say racist shit or they support Trump so thus they’re racist?

In my experience, being white around white racists, objecting to n-bombs and arguing about their alternative histories of the Civil War will actually attract more of it. Like it triggers some existential crisis and their need to understand the cosmos as they know it is threatened. Other times it's simply being white in rural, white, working class America.

Every vice and virtue in a person exists on a spectrum. The standard conservative tactic is to point out those who actively oppose the most egregious forms of racism that is rife in this country's history to present day do not themselves live in hermetically sealed bubbles of virtue untainted by racism (population everyone) and therefore are no different than those who have generationally denied it allowing it to metastasize unchecked.

It’s impossible for a student to work enough hours to pay for college while being a student.

Got some college credits for honors classes in High School, took community college courses over the summer and knocked out college at UT in 3 years in 90s.  Had work study and a pell grant which covered rent and books and then worked other jobs over summer as well as spring break.  Parents were broke with 4 kids so they didn't contribute. Scholarships paid for half of grad school and took out a loan to pay for the other half--about 25k.

I never had a car until post grad school because I couldn't afford one, and clothing all through school was always second hand. Furniture and bed was side of the road.  Kept my vices low because I couldn't afford them.

But my perspective of having lived in and around DC the last 20 years is super jaded.  Everything to me seems affordable and cheaper back in Texas.

I watched a relative buy their kid a car, designer clothing, pay for tuition, pay greek dues, new phone and travel on breaks.  In return the kid wrecked the car twice, almost flunked out, extorted parents with would do better with a new iPhone, and said somebody stole clothes so needed new ones. F'k that.

Massive debt is a testament to college today but I'd still have to find a way to take it on because there still would be no other means to pay for it.  More than anything, I was just trying to say that parents aren't obliged to pay for their kids beyond high school.  There are other ways to be supportive.  A friend of mine worked the night shift and lived at home for two years and saved 40k. Kudos to his parents for allowing that.

Should have considered a trade school imo.

I tried to encourage that.

He’s a very bright kid but he is not a great student - doesn’t enjoy reading and the classroom.

He’ll be very successful once he gets into the working world because. I’ve never met a harder worker - he’s just like his dad; school is/was not their thing but they excel at the real world stuff. My daughter and I LOVE/D school - heck, I got a Masters just to stay in college longer. But my son/husband will be/are more successful because us girls are, well, lazier when it come to being an employee.

But the boy wanted the college experience like all his buddies - fraternity, football games, sorority girls etc. His grades are fine and he’ll get that diploma.

If it wasn’t for the fact that you must have a college degree to even get an entry level job today, he probably would have started working right out of high school.

I encouraged him to look into plumbing or electrical - a clean cut, preppy, well dressed, well spoken cute dude with all his teeth and no drug or criminal issues? Could make BANK and own his own company. He wasn’t having it.

The transition to a college degree now being the equivalent of a high school diploma is damn racket.

He had his heart set on Supply Chain/Logistics.

He’s a senior now and I’m just praying he gets done in five years lol. It’s been good for him - he’s a natural introvert - and college has helped him be more social and outgoing. I just wish it didn’t cost so much fucking money.

Don’t get me started on the girl and the cost of Auburn and her plans for law school. I ain’t ever getting to retire lol.

I can't speak for Jimmy but this shit happens w/ me quite a bit.  It's because I, physically, look like I should be a magat.  I'm muscular, my hair is buzz-cut length, I have a beard, I ride a Harley....all physical attributes that scream maga.   I hear all their unvarnished bullshit about how they're gonna whip libtards' asses and what tough guys they are....right up until the time I inform them I'm violently opposed to Trump.  Then they always shut the fuck up when I ask if they still feel like kicking a libtard's ass.

One usually doesn't see those physical traits in a woman.

You don’t get it. The aggy earned that social assistance. Olds earned their social security. My brother earned that welfare.

The defunding of education perfectly ties into the myth of john galt. He didn’t need shit from anyone. If a fictional self-made man can do it, surely these entitled lazy kids can.

Hang in there @Bama Chick. As someone who is on the other side of two going to college and one who went on to law school, there is life afterwards.  We felt the same way. We put them first and that meant several lean years for us, and a lot of uncertainty. When they were all done, we chose to downsize big time. Sold our house and probably 75% of our possessions and got totally out of debt. That may not be for everybody, but it worked for us and We have no regrets. We are 5 years away from retiring and our two have become productive members of society. There really is light at the end of the tunnel.

I think being white and having ears seems to be the first requirement. Seriously, being female I don't get the pejoratives or racist jokes told in front of me, but the casual racism based on tropes and things is to what I'm exposed. Perhaps it's because I try and listen to people when they speak (I'm not a verbal learner so I've had to work hard at listening) so they believe I'm in agreement or receptive.

Do you curse at people with your opponent's campaign signs in their front yard? No. Incessantly argue the most mundane points of a conversation?  Sometimes. Are we talking about whether pumpkin pie should be made with canned vs fresh pumpkin, cause I will debate that for quite a while if you like. (Canned because my spouse prefers that). Yell, "THIS IS THE END OF OUR REPUBLIC!" every time something bad happens?  No, although we now have a running 'Thanks Trump' joke in our house due to the phrase that was popular for the last president. Or are you mostly normal, and save it for this board?  Normal is a vague label and I don't know what your idea of normal is. I'm honestly skeptical that your idea of normal takes in all 330 million plus American attitudes and perspectives and distills them into a meaningful definition of normal. I'm honestly curious.

As for me, I can walk and chew gum at the same time except I don't actually chew gum very often. I prefer mints.

Yep. Just like my FIL earned his disabled vet payments due to the Army not giving a shit about hearing protection when he went thru basic in '65. His hearing loss is absolutely 100% NOT connected to his personal refusal to wear any type of hearing protection as a lifelong hunter/shooter. I've brought boxes of in ear, muffs, active noise suppressing, etc out to the ranch over the past 20 years. He'd just laugh at them. At least other family members took care of their ears.

But now that he's got some fancy DV plates, a few hundred bucks a month, & some $5k hearing aids that the VA gave him he's just another hero who gave his hearing in the service of our country

Like they say racist shit. They may also support trump, and in fact probably do, but I live in Austin so it’s probably slightly  more socially acceptable among the whites to say racist shit than it is to say you support trump. The only people I run into that will admit to supporting trump are good friends and family members. Everyone else, just like on this board, voted for Gary Johnson and are now “undecided.”

They can make good money, yes, but they are also leaving a lot on the table without the union. Better pay, healthcare, training are all huge in a job where you beat the hell out of your body.

I'm basically the same.  I tend to shake my head several times a day at the obvious stupidity of others.  I also watch News controlled by American's or clearly identified as foreign news, rather than unknowingly loving a foreign controlled news source like Fox news.  I also know facts, and I have principles and morals that I taught my kids.  I also do not think principles and morals are completely flexible depending on if my current party controls the Presidency., or for X amount of dollars.  I don't worship money, and care about my fellow man, have a sense of fair play, don't cheat... especially at golf...

Does all this give me away as currently non-Republican?

It is a generational thing to give a shit about safety.  From the old timers who worked on skyscrapers with no harness to today where we have people injured by filing cabinets.  Today is definitely better.  Albeit a humorously absurd at times.
