Texas DB & LB Talk

Biggest issue with our secondary is they panic when the ball is in the air and turn to play the WR instead of playing the ball. Most of the time if they would just turn they head it would result in a PBU or interception because most balls are under thrown these days. But maybe they are being taught to play the WR idk. Either way I hope they work on their ball skills prior to the playoff game.

I buy that to an extent. Is it on catches only or all throws? I’d assume but catches but he missed more often versus Michigan so that might presumably increase the yardage difference. The missed deep ball to Odunze was his worst throw in the two games.

Time to throw versus Texas was 2.93 seconds and 2.45 versus Michigan so that’d lean more towards tighter coverage from Texas because more time to separate.

That time to throw difference is big but 2.45 is very quick to release the ball. The 2.93 is around high average going from memory. There was a difference of 0.31 when kept clean and 0.65 when pressured. Penix was no doubt feeling pressure quicker versus UM resulting 4-18 and 2 picks when pressured. He was 9-15 versus us. But he also was better when clean against us.

Just one of those days in which he was draining 3s.

WTF is going on out there? I've been watching this ever since I saw the first tweet about it. That popped up, then nothing since. Until this just a few minutes ago:

Brent Brennan has ‘decent commitment’ from Duane Akina to return to Arizona staff https://www.azdesertswarm.com/football/2024/1/17/24042091/arizona-wildcats-football-brent-brennan-duane-akina-texas-dick-tomey-kevin-cummings-san-jose-2024?utm_campaign=azdesertswarm&utm_content=entry&utm_medium=social&utm_source=twitter

Old news, just adding to this thread...

Texas adds former NFL defensive back to support staff -- William Gay

image.png.4e923023eebbb07ad9f273251858087b.png

Longtime NFL cornerback William Gay is joining the Texas staff as an analyst. He'll be a senior defensive analyst working with the defensive backs.

While support staff spots are unlimited, it doesn't take the intellect of Robert Oppenheimer to connect the dots here.

Texas was set to bring former defensive backs coach Duane Akina back in a support staff role until Jedd Fisch took the Washington job, which led to Brent Brennan becoming the next Arizona head coach, which led to Akina "returning" to Arizona as defensive coordinator.

And so now Gay will assist Terry Joseph and Blake Gideon in coaching the Longhorns secondary.

A fifth-round pick out of Louisville, he played 11 seasons in the NFL. Gay won a Super Bowl as a Pittsburgh Steeler, posted 13 career interceptions, and scored six touchdowns. Following his 2018 retirement, Gay spent 2019 as an intern for the Steelers and 2020 as the defensive backs coach at Missouri State.

Pass defense will be an area of focus as Texas looks to capitalize on its Big 12 championship and College Football Playoff debut into the SEC. The Longhorns return starting cornerbacks Malik Muhammad and Terrance Brooks, starting safeties Derek Williams and Michael Taaffe, and starting nickel back Jahdae Barron. Texas added Clemson safety Andrew Mukuba in the portal and, as of this writing, is in the running for Washington cornerback Jabbar Muhammad.

Sources: Texas to add former SEC position coach to support staff

Former Ole Miss corners coach and new Texas analyst Keynodo Hudson first worked for Steve Sarkisian at USC.

ZACH BARNETT     2 HOURS AGO

Former Ole Miss cornerbacks coach Keynodo Hudson is expected to join the Texas staff as an analyst, sources confirmed to FootballScoop on Tuesday. Inside Texas first reported Hudson's hiring; Hudson was seen working with the Longhorn defensive backs during the first week of UT's spring practices.

Hudson spent 2023 coaching Ole Miss's cornerbacks but was not retained after Lane Kiffin hired former Louisville defensive coordinator Bryan Brown as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach.

A West Virginia Tech graduate, Hudson has previously coached defensive backs at Western Kentucky, Illinois, and Florida Atlantic.

Hudson was a defensive administrative assistant at USC from 2012-16, which overlapped with Steve Sarkisian's season and a half leading the Trojans.

Texas has been looking for another set of eyes in the secondary. The Longhorns were previously set to bring former secondary coach Duane Akina back to Austin, but Akina opted to remain at Arizona upon the change from Jedd Fisch to Brent Brennan. Akina is now Arizona's defensive coordinator.

The Longhorns finished 49th nationally in pass efficiency defense in 2023, but return four of five starters in the secondary.

Babers hoped secondary was gonna be a strength this year.

Babers"I did not see very many signs in the Spring Game that it will be a strength in the upcoming season "  😬

This is what bothers the fuck out of me. It's not like the secondary was seeing routes and plays which they had never seen. They've seen the same routes and plays for 14 practices. Either our secondary coaches REALLY suck at teaching or our DBs are REALLY fucking stupid.

Terrance Brooks into the portal.  Gerry said TB might be a better boundary corner type player but he's behind Manny there.  Or Brooks might end up as a safety on another team.  So don't be surprised if TB plays well elsewhere if the situation is better for him.

Bobby Burton said NIL expectations was one reason why TB entered the portal.

Gonna be interesting to see if Texas can find a quality CB in the portal now.
