If Watts can't go they need to work Barron at CB and let Gilbeau man Star. Jordan/Brooks just aren't ready yet.

Yep. That was the combo they tried late today. Brooks and Jordan will be good players in a year or two but Barron is the better corner right now by far.

Heard one $9.95er say his MVP on Texas defense right now is Ryan Watts -- frees up others to fly around and play more aggressively...  🤔

From an "On Texas Football" video.  Ryan Watts was the 2nd leading tackler against Cyclones, and he left the game in the 2nd quarter

Also Jamier Johnson was hurt and not available for this game vs the Cyclones...

Well, 3 of those tackles were after completions for 1st downs. Another completion for 7 yards on 1st down. He did what’ll probably be two “stop” under the PFF system.

One thing I didn't realize was that Ford was the one that recovered the fumble. Kid is solid. Int and fumble recovery.

ESPN is crediting him with a pick and 2 fumble recoveries on the day. I must have missed the first recovery?

Ford did a good job looking back and finding the receiver before his redzone pick. However, I feel like too often our linebackers disappear when they drop into coverage. Particularly against ISU.

Likely because Tucker-Dorsey and #43 are not P5 LBs. Ford isn't great at it yet, but he's getting better at it. Overshown is used more to rush the passer than dropping into coverage.

New-look defenses

Coaches see Texas’ defensive line as its strength. The depth is significant — “they’re able to roll about eight dudes through there,” a staffer said — and opponents have noticed their size and strength.

Improved linebacker play, led by the emergence of junior Jaylan Ford, has made a difference for the Longhorns. Ford leads the Big 12 with 82 tackles and has made multiple key plays this season, particularly an end zone interception against Iowa State that shifted momentum.

“Ford has played beyond expectations,” a staffer said. “He’s really talented.”

The secondary garnered less praise, with multiple coaches calling it an area to exploit.

“Secondary-wise, we didn’t think they were world beaters,” a head coach said. “We felt like we could throw the ball on them.”

Said a staffer: “They’re OK. They can get exposed a little bit there. I think they play not to get beat at times.”

Overall, a head coach called them “definitely better” on defense, attributing some of that improvement to being in the second year of the same scheme under defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski.
