TBH this place is on the verge of death. Football is becoming less and less important and everyone just wants to dumb down to consumption instead of participation. This place wasn't started as a content aggregator and it didn't evolve into one either, but embeds have really made it hard to participate.

My wife works at a school with a high Hispanic population and dozens of her favorite students have stopped showing up out of fear of ICE raids. She breaks into tears most nights. I'll be sure to tell her to just calm the fuck down. This isn't fucking normal or sane, its cruelty for the sake of cruelty, but yea, everyone just calm your tits, right? Let's just down play it as "Orange Man Bad," right? Stop downplaying what is happening and telling people to calm down, there are real world consequences from this bullshit being felt by really good people just trying to earn a fucking living along with their children.

I really hate hearing this. I don't add a lot but I try to do and share more than just memes and drive by comments.

The core posters aren't going anywhere, but they are starting to die off quite literally. There is no fresh blood coming and it's been a problem for a while. Twitter absolutely sucks, but the media is posted there. I have a plan to change that soon, but we really need people using surly first and Twitter second or never instead of using Twitter and then posting stuff here from there.

I think a clip generator tool where people can do analysis of the games/plays or just clip certain segments and post their thoughts would go a super long way.

I also think a season replay/media repository will help keep people here on the site.

I'm also trying to build out a gif repo going so we host the gifs everyone uses instead of having to go to yarn or giphy or whatever.

There's a lot to do to really modernize this place and make it a place that everyone who is a fan should come beyond just a discussion/message board. People just aren't that into that form anymore.

Ok I get that. Funny, it’s because of this place that I don’t need Tik Tok, insta, fb, X or whatever.

there was a comment somewhere about the good old days on shaggybevo and i googled and found reference to us all over the place. certain threads like the co-op thread were mentioned. the BL depo story was in several places, ms paint masterpieces.  I know you've asked for more content creation, not sure how to crack that, but this place (or at least its predecessors) are well known for content even if only for a few amazing ones.

I agree with this.

I might glance at other media to 'triangulate' or research further; but Surly discussions drive my news, for better or worse.

Never have been on Tik Tok besides shared links, and even then it's minimal.    I've been on Twitter for about 18 months/ 2 baseball seasons.  It has become just complete bullshit.  I think Monday night I removed it from my favorites.  I liked it for sports.  There's no fucking sports content any more.

Imma’s long term point is if the site doesn’t have content generators then it will die. My time is over I’m 50 this year. My wife and I are no longer web cam material or we’d jump in and offer to help.

Imma is right, original threads and original content is what brought me to Shaggy. Someone linked "craziest sex in MS paint" to another board and from there I was hooked. thujone threads, the goose photo kayak, crazy chick aka preacher boy, Fit lump, both tacos, Statues behind the Co-op, etc seems like there was a classic every month or two

Now just it more of a news rehash, and bitch about things you didn't like or just about bitching.

I recognize I am part of the problem, and have no idea how all of it changed. We need a new dumpster fire photo thread, a calling out some Aggy recruiting wanna be hack job, or fitlump to run off a state seat, the only ongoing story to follow right now is when will @Nicole44 strike again?

Basically you’re saying we need a new group of posters in their 20’s or 30’s. The main posters here don’t fit that description anymore and most have quickly turned into old men screaming at clouds the last few years.  Way less fun crazy times stories to be told.

The discussion board is a dying medium. Immamac has this sniffed out. You can tweak the content delivery options, but the reality is that this is largely a GenX thing. Pre-algo shit. Where people could actually hone arguments in exchanges with other human beings through the magics of the internets.

Fuck off, Troph. You add much more than you think. You lead the charge and share all things mental and physical health-related. That’s pretty big. And your fishing enthusiasm is contagious.
p.s. don’t overlook Brisket’s sharpie suggestion. It’s for the good of the whole.

Personally, I think the Cloak Room and, to a lesser extent, the Daily Texan, and the posters  they attract, are the cancers that are killing the site. This place used to be fun. It seldom is these days. In an attempt to recreate the past, I have excluded  both forums from my timeline. So far, so good.

I am pretty busy during the day and try not to watch tv at night, so I used Bada Bing and Daily Texan as my news briefs during the day. Scroll through, and if something was hot, it was probably pretty important.  I was a regular reader of the AA thread and the dog thread.
I tried reading the thread on the Wichita-D.C. crash, and I think I am out. Pretty disappointed and disgusted

Say what you will about the current administration, but he has made it damn near impossible to remain blissfully unaware about politicals and agendas. (COVID was also a huge factor.) Never had a single post--or read a single post--in any version of the shaggybevo/texas or surly cloak rooms pre-November 2020. Any implied innuendo or culture war prodding in DT or the football board before then--and I'm sure there was some--went right over my head. It was great.

So I don't think surly has changed, other than it has become a reflection of our current society. We're all so hyper-aware of the buzzwords and ongoing culture wars that you can't sneak one past the goalie anymore. We're all just looking to call each other out or any chance to spike the football at each other. I'm certainly guilty of it.

And god help us all if the helicopter pilot ends up being a woman. That "CR" pendulum will snap back the other direction at lightning speed, in that thread and all the way to the a White House. There's no escaping it. It's who we are as Americans now. Everything has to be entirely the fault of the right or left, or some conspiracy.

These are my feelings as well, I get things are messed up in real life and everyone copes differently. I deal with that in my real life daily, but Shaggy/Surly had been that place I went to get away from all that.  Maybe catch a laugh, bitch about Texas football before cheering them on together the next game., have an actual two way conversation about something random. This place was a reprieve and it's slowly morphed into a place that adds to the real life for me instead of taking it away.  I need to cut back at least for awhile.  And maybe some people need this place as a place to vent because they don't have it in real life, I don't know, just know for me lightbulb is coming on that might be best to step back on the frequency.

That's obviously a huge part of it as well. I imagine we're all mostly civil in our real lives and don't find ways to shoehorn politics into our conversations with friends, family, co-workers, and random strangers (because we're not fucking sociopaths), but everyone needs an outlet for their frustrations somewhere.

This.  I don't like Trump either, and when I want to think about politics or get pissed off at that asshole, it's certainly not hard to seek that out.  Hell, maybe once a week I'll head over to the Cloak Room because I know whatever terrible shit that asshole and those around him are doing will be discussed at length.  But he's literally broken the fucking brain of a lot of the most frequent posters on this board.  And then those that disagree with them can't help themselves to retort back.  And yeah, I've seen it go the other way where the Trumpers get political then the libs can't help themselves.  The DCA crash thread is a perfect example.  I go to try to get actual info and news.  See the reddit post from a pilot immamac imbedded which was good info, see some info on the victims which is good info, scan for other content by pilots or others that post on this board.  There is usually great stuff on threads like that that is much better than turning on the news.  But now you have to wade through a shit ton of broken brained Cloak Roomers that can't help themselves.  Is there a way to ignore posters on every forum BUT cloak room?  I don't mind getting their take on there if that is what I'm in the mood to consume.  But, shocking I know, a lot us don't let politics consume our lives.  It's getting pretty close to the point I log on to check out the 9.95, food/travel and entertainment threads and that's it.

I think what made the Shag what it was were the circumstances of how we came together. In 2007 blogs were very important. We still all read the sports pages in the morning. Social media was more about affinity/connection and less about curation and everyone online was primarily consuming/creating long form written content first and pictures second.
The GenXers that formed the original core of the shag came together as a result of our online but also real life shenanigans, after having already been together for 10 years on 2-3 other forums with the same handles (Hookem, OBs, Hornfans etc). Our exodus from Hornfans (basically because we wanted a place to freely talk shit and crack wise)  attracted chaos-agent millennials, and the result was chaotic but routinely hilarious. But it was also a smart group, so even the cloak room/west mall content was good, not because it was tolerant, but because it was serious, thoughtful, and sharp. Not to mention that it was in good faith. The angry ex Republicans on today’s CR were still Republicans back then.
Now we’re all 15 years older, which means the  GenXers are simply old and the millennials are in the busiest part of their lives. Those of us that are left either still have the same sense of humor and care about the team, but rarely have the energy or patience or time to read, let alone write 500 words at a time, and aim not sure people younger than us think about content in those terms. Twitter sucks. I agree. This place is better and I do come here first. I hope this place is around longer than I am. But the medium is the message and honestly I’m not sure what kind of future forums like this one have beyond your generation.

Incidentally- in my opinion the problem with the CR is not so much that it’s an echo chamber (it’s not) but because it’s full of ex Republicans and other politically homeless people who are mostly politically motivated by anger and fear, however legitimate. It’s just very hostile vibes. Still funny and sharp at times and occasionally everyone gets their hopes up but hostility is the prevailing mood.

It’s the climate these days also, so many people are way too emotionally involved with things they can’t directly control. We all do it sometimes but many seem to be consumed by it. Some posters that use to contribute everywhere, post normally and have fun have taken it to the extreme, over half their post are doom and gloom and they are all over those two forums now for the most part.

I think that’s a reflection of the current environment in politics and our society. The last vestiges of decorum are hanging on for dear life. We’ve become a society that not only tolerates hostility, but encourages it with who we vote for and how we interact with each other.

If you want participation you gotta foster an environment where people don't get shouted down or crowdsourced for comments running contrary to one group or another.  There are areas of this board that have slowly turned into dirty sixth where people of a certain ilk congregate and they start to wander off into other areas.  You can try to contain them to their own sections of the website but it's not working. Most of us are tired of having to wade through that trash.

You are all completely wrong. The problem is that everyone thinks this stuff is serious and they can't joke about it, because it isn't funny to them.

Younger people (15 years younger) think this stuff is funny.  There's a ton of stuff to make fun of and be absurdist about. Everyone here is just too old and too "mature" to joke about some of this stuff and are starting to get worn down in real life because the internet isn't a fucking game, it's real llife now.

This is why we need young people to come here, to bring the silly side back and have an irreverence for what's going on and create the funny silly spin on it.

Removing rep is the first step. You want to foster a better environment then stop having a system where people leave others a middle finger when they disagree with their posts. I turned off notifications for rep and it's very enjoyable. Stop making a system where people feel they have some weird power to remove those they simply can't just ignore. More people need to utilize the ignore feature especially if CR type posts from people bother them. Or maybe just practice some self-control and not respond to people.

see my post. You don't really understand the entire dynamic of this community or how communities work. The problem isn't shouting and crowdsourcing it's that everyone is internet srs business all the fucking time instead of joking about shit.

There's time to be serious and that's almost none of the time - it's why this place was this place.

"doing it for the lulz" is different than being cruel or being a complete fucking idiot on completely provable/disprovable discussions. There's some shit that goes on here where things are serious and people are trying to be serious making completely boneheaded arguments that take 5 seconds of research to know they are terrible.

It's different than joking or adding brevity to a situation.

rep wasn't a problem on shaggy, wasn't a problem here forever etc etc. all of the sudden it's a problem? Oh wait every fucking board on the internet has rep? NO WAI they should take it away cuz it's a problem.

Oh wait, crowdsource bans only happen to shitty trolls, morons from other fanbases that come to troll and fucking toxic pieces of shit? WEIRD IT SEEMS LIKE ITS WORKING.

Getting a neg here and there when you have 45918 rep isn't the problem jesus fucking christ.

This discussion makes you wonder what this site would look like--or if it even still exists in a somewhat recognizable form--without thujone.

I'm not sure how many people came and stayed because of Thujone - there's a few people who did, but most people "went back home" and didn't "rehome" to shaggy/surly.

Now, I do think that there's a complete lack of new people who come in, and that's what the main issue is. This used to happen because Google and search engines, because there's tons of content here. Now if you don't spend on SEO and run Googles ads (we don't) then they just derank you to irrelevance. We have by far the most content/biggest thread for quinn ewers anywhere. We get no web traffic from that, we get no web traffic from a lot of stuff and the top incoming traffic comes to the "Lauren boobert" thread, because people search lauren Boebert boobs and we rank at the top there because of the funny thread name.

Remember the joke about craig james killed 5 hookers while at SMU? and how that boosted the search engine etc? Yeah well that doesn't happen anymore when someone does something shitty - everything is different on organic traffic acquisition. Now you have to do in person activation or have peer invitations etc. People don't just stumble on message boards anymore like they used to.

this is the issue, people think there's something to discuss, there's not really anything to discuss it's very obvious what is happening and the data supports it. There is no new posters, posters are dying, posters are moving on in life etc. that leads to growth stagnation. Now that there's no fresh blood, everyone becomes less anonymous because you have a history of interacting with them very frequently and now that you are older things are not as silly/funny as they used to be and poof here we are.

This isn't some difficult and convoluted problem, it's a very plain and simple problem and I don't need a bunch of discussion on what or how it's become this way from a bunch of people whining about "people on the internet being mean to me" "people doing middle fingers to me even though it doesn't matter at all"

You guys realize one of the best threads of the year was me having a heatstroke at a tailgate and promoting a pair of shoes that were sponsored, right?

You also realize some of the other funniest things that happened were from me posting my adventure to the Michigan game with my family and the "sea monster" image was pretty funny.

If you can't have a sense of humor, you can't figure out that none of this is really for anything but some brevity and a good laugh then don't talk to me about what the problem is. The problem right now is I'm not a single man who can just make the content that I know works all the time because I have a family and it's really hard to do this stuff when you are juggling these experiences with a wife and kids and not just producing content.

Last year in NOLA we did a ton of stuff with Will, people are really into it. There's a lot we can do here, but it takes time and effort and that's something that shouldn't be all on a single person. Everyone thinks the bar for creating content is high, it isn't - it's extremely low especially if you are just genuine and open to everyone poking a bit of fun at it.

Hunting adventures, shit you cook, fun vacations you went on, memorable experiences at games, funny bar night stories, stories from work events, etc etc all that is a huge driver.

The difference is that the current President of the United States can't speak without making everything partisan. He just went on TV and said DEI played a role. Any other president would offer condolences and say that an investigation will be undertaken. The latter is news that can be discussed in normal discourse. The former are the words of the President which by definition is news and immediately partisan. How can anyone possibly have a robust discussion without acknowledging his own words? The fact that some posters get so angry about it doesn't make sense.

Just now, TonyTexas said:

Imma’s attitude indicates to me that the fish indeed rots from the head.

You guys think this place just magically exists and have opinions that are really actually just wrong, they aren't well formed, they are drive by and they are completely based on incorrect data and a very myopic point of view.

The attitude I have in this thread is that I'm stating what is happening and you are sitting here telling me NUH UH I DO A LOT FOR THE SITE YOU ARE JUST FUCKING IT UP CUZ YOU ARE AN IDIOT AND LET THE CLOAK ROOM HAPPEN LOLOL(OLOLOLOLLOLOLOL
