This.  I don't like Trump either, and when I want to think about politics or get pissed off at that asshole, it's certainly not hard to seek that out.  Hell, maybe once a week I'll head over to the Cloak Room because I know whatever terrible shit that asshole and those around him are doing will be discussed at length.  But he's literally broken the fucking brain of a lot of the most frequent posters on this board.  And then those that disagree with them can't help themselves to retort back.  And yeah, I've seen it go the other way where the Trumpers get political then the libs can't help themselves.  The DCA crash thread is a perfect example.  I go to try to get actual info and news.  See the reddit post from a pilot immamac imbedded which was good info, see some info on the victims which is good info, scan for other content by pilots or others that post on this board.  There is usually great stuff on threads like that that is much better than turning on the news.  But now you have to wade through a shit ton of broken brained Cloak Roomers that can't help themselves.  Is there a way to ignore posters on every forum BUT cloak room?  I don't mind getting their take on there if that is what I'm in the mood to consume.  But, shocking I know, a lot us don't let politics consume our lives.  It's getting pretty close to the point I log on to check out the 9.95, food/travel and entertainment threads and that's it.

Serious question, in that thread you said 50% of the posts were CR.

A. What are all these CR posts you see? Because last night and up until your post I’d only seen a couple people bitching about the CR but no real CR posts, had me confused last night and here you are repeating it this morning. Can you cite some examples?

B. What does saying everything is CR actually do other than make it CR? People make jokes in the face of tragedy, that’s not CR. People point out current affairs that may contribute but that’s only CR if you make it political vs. just pointing out current environment.

I’d like to hear your thought?

like shut the fuck up.

It's the same argument every time. Always complaining about the CR and claiming that its mere existence makes it too scary for their made up rich friends to post here, despite the fact that it and the football board are miles ahead of every other section in engagement. I would love to see some real, concrete examples (you know, data) of some kind of pervasive CR/DT leak to the rest of the board.

I have been a CR poster since day 1 here and I can almost definitively say I have never made a CR post outside the CR/DT. The claims that this happens far too often are never backed up by actual evidence, nor is the continuous claim that anyone gets crowdsourced in the CR when it is demonstrably very infrequent and, like imma said, only happens to trolls.

Probably not. They used Reddit or Discord for discussions. Even if they would show up, this place isn't exactly inviting or welcoming to new people. But I'll wait for immamac to come back and probably tell me how I don't know anything or be his usual belligerent self and then wonder why maybe people don't want to donate more or do more things with this version of Surly.

Generally speaking we don't need ALL YOUNG PEOPLE to come here and post. We need people like @Tex48 etc. recent grads who have a good sense of humor, know how to use the internet and like to come and meet people at the tailgates. I don't even really know how he ended up here.

If we had 20-50 new young posters per year who were fanatics about recruiting, football etc. that would be enough to really change the overall tone here. We aren't trying to chase thousands or millions of users growth we are trying to keep the conversation from getting stale and too serious/boring/bad.

MM stats with a shitty Duke team weren't actually that far off from QE, and QE had a pretty meh year for the majority of the season, he really started to come on very late in the season. I still think MM is a good QB, I don't think he's better than QE, but I do think he wouldn't have been the dropoff that some of you think he would have been had QE gone to the draft. MM would also be done after last year and Arch would be starting next season so it all is moot at this point and just a fun "whatif" scenario.

Looks like they got moved to a different thread.  But if someone is talking about Trump, or any R or D public official, the post, even if just a quote, will inevitably have a partisan tone in this politically charged environment.  It's just the stupid fucking world we live in.   I don't give a shit what he or any other R or D have to say on a fast paced news thread unless it's a flat out statement of facts.  A lot of us don't care and actively try to avoid what any of those idiots say as it's fucking irrelevant to the goal of actually becoming educated on any given topic.  When I click on a thread like that in DT, I want fact aggregation and expertise aggregation (what has historically made DT great is we have experts on damn near any topic in the community) and then community discussion on same.   If I want to bitch about Trump or Kamala or similar I can go to the Cloak Room for that.  But inevitably in damn near any thread someone has to chime in on what Trump said, and someone reacts, and off we go.  Then yeah, those of us that are actively trying to avoid partisan bullshit end up bitching about the Cloak Roomers which, to your point, further dilutes the discussion.

this isn't gonna be the case this time.  I think that the outrage and discussion about what it means politically is gonna be in CR and DT is gonna be a bunch of making fun of shit and hot takes that happen to be the main characters of this era's drama/tv/whatever.

When politicians dominate the news cycle because the media is giving them airtime it's not politics it's just the news being dominated by elected officials. If they say stupid ass shit it's fair game.

I tried to make the point to @immamactuat CR was negatively affecting the site, BEFORE the election. I was laughed at, albeit by many in addition to him.

I agree with everything you’re saying. The ignore feature here is worthless because everyone quotes the people I ignore, because they’re the most polarizing. Your quote of Captainant just below this post and people’s frequent quoting of Fantana are prime examples. The ignore feature’s lack of functionality is a problem.

If I were Imma, I’d jettison CR to a separate site and outlaw heavily political talk on DT. It’d help the divisiveness here.

Incidentally- in my opinion the problem with the CR is not so much that it’s an echo chamber (it’s not) but because it’s full of ex Republicans and other politically homeless people who are mostly politically motivated by anger and fear, however legitimate. It’s just very hostile vibes. Still funny and sharp at times and occasionally everyone gets their hopes up but hostility is the prevailing mood.

It’s 100% an echo chamber and the former Republican bullshit is a plot device.

If you want participation you gotta foster an environment where people don't get shouted down or crowdsourced for comments running contrary to one group or another.  There are areas of this board that have slowly turned into dirty sixth where people of a certain ilk congregate and they start to wander off into other areas.  You can try to contain them to their own sections of the website but it's not working. Most of us are tired of having to wade through that trash.

You are all completely wrong. The problem is that everyone thinks this stuff is serious and they can't joke about it, because it isn't funny to them.

Younger people (15 years younger) think this stuff is funny.  There's a ton of stuff to make fun of and be absurdist about. Everyone here is just too old and too "mature" to joke about some of this stuff and are starting to get worn down in real life because the internet isn't a fucking game, it's real llife now.

This is why we need young people to come here, to bring the silly side back and have an irreverence for what's going on and create the funny silly spin on it.

Removing rep is the first step. You want to foster a better environment then stop having a system where people leave others a middle finger when they disagree with their posts. I turned off notifications for rep and it's very enjoyable. Stop making a system where people feel they have some weird power to remove those they simply can't just ignore. More people need to utilize the ignore feature especially if CR type posts from people bother them. Or maybe just practice some self-control and not respond to people.

1 hour ago, immamac said:

see my post. You don't really understand the entire dynamic of this community or how communities work. The problem isn't shouting and crowdsourcing it's that everyone is internet srs business all the fucking time instead of joking about shit.

There's time to be serious and that's almost none of the time - it's why this place was this place.

"doing it for the lulz" is different than being cruel or being a complete fucking idiot on completely provable/disprovable discussions. There's some shit that goes on here where things are serious and people are trying to be serious making completely boneheaded arguments that take 5 seconds of research to know they are terrible.

It's different than joking or adding brevity to a situation.

Again, you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about. People don't care about rep, they care about the content, and the community.

Sounds good Peter.

Even if CR was an echo chamber to the left, who fucking cares? It's there for a reason. The OSU board I frequent also has a politics board and is an echo chamber almost exclusively to the right. I just avoid it and it doesn't come up in sports discussions. I also avoid the news board there too because it's the same. I still pay them for access to the members only boards because the sports conversations are worthwhile.

I did when it came out. First of all, it’s not that funny.  My humor has evolved as I’ve gotten older, but that doesn’t approach thujone’s gems or USC versus greatest armies. It’s mildly funny but contrived.

Where you’re wrong on the CR is people don’t want to contribute because they’re simply not around because of the hate. And, yes, it deters future content creators from joining. This place is a leftist cesspool. I hate Trump, but you’ve let the looney control your site.

To be clear, the people who usually whine the loudest about CR, are the same folks who are fine posting the political opinions that they agree with all over the board. Because those aren't political opinions, simply inviolable truths.

There are multiple posters on the Ukraine DT thread who will explain why the Trump admin will be good for Ukraine. If you push back, they call you a CR troll. See also, the Israel-Hamas thread. Pronghorn spams DT with anti-LGBTQ accounts on a daily basis. I've never seen the "keep it in the CR" folks complain about that. In fact, they'll defend his right to do so if you attack him.

Does it upset the "CR sucks" folks that the "business and markets" thread is a place to criticize the Biden admin? I see some of you posting in that forum regularly who are some of the most vocal proponents of getting rid of the CR. But again, if its an opinion you agree with, you're fine with it on any forum.

So forgive me if it seems like you care less about keeping the CR in the CR, and more about not seeing opinions that run counter to your own.

I’m very anti-Trump, bitch about him on the oil thread constantly, and generally don’t bitch about CR. I occasionally post in there. I don’t get negged to death. The only time I bring this up is when imma does what he does: intimates he wants feedback and then subsequently calls everyone freeloading (? - I’ve never attended a tailgate and never would) idiots when doing so. I’m totally fine with the way things are. If it’s too toxic, and it frequently is, I just log off and go elsewhere.

Old fashioned message boards are dying all over the Internet. There's a lot of reasons, from either competing but similar service like reddit, to dissimilar services like Twitter, and even stuff like tiktok. Late 90s/early 2000s style message boards are a relative dinosaur in terms of how media is consumed. Claiming this one in particular isn't growing or is dying because there's a politics sub board is a a logical leap. There's politics all over Reddit and Xitter and Bluesky and tiktok. Xitter damn near forces it on you.

yeah, and it's not that it's "dying" it's that there's not any fresh blood/perspective and when things get stale they stagnate and when you stagnate you eventually shrink because of natural attrition, like when people actually die and stuff like that.

This is the essence of most people complaining about "CR" - it's just a means to shout down things they don't want to acknowledge. The fucking commander in chief of the US Army, whose helicopter just killed 60+ civilians, making a statement matters and is pretty goddamn key to the news story as it emerges.. It's aggy levels of stupid to call a direct quotation of his "political".

If President Trump ordered a military invasion on Panama to finally show those canal stealing bastards who's boss - it's gonna be a fucking news story. Sorry that trump is attached to the story. He IS the guy most of the CR complainers voted for anyways.

This is 100% the reality although I've been shouted down when I made this point once before. The people that like sports and also like to post about politics find the site that largely suits their political flavor and then they all collectively shout down alternative viewpoints leading to the echo chamber pretty much every sports political board is.   I've never paid a dime to Fat Ketch but have had access to my buddy's account for well over a decade and sometimes for the sheer humor I'll read a thread in the cloak room and then the OB politics board on the same topic and it's pretty funny.  I don't have any problem with that in theory, but similarly, on all sports boards, because you have so many like minded individuals, the politics leak out onto other threads.   Imma is probably correct that this doesn't have anything to do with the site dying but for me personally I spend a lot less time on non sports, entertainment or food than I used to.    Probably just the reality of current culture where you essentially can't escape it and social media algorithms are also simultaneously echo chambers.

Just to reaffirm points made a few times, I know a guy who owns several message board sites on the internet. They are all dying. Younger people just don’t engage much. You can find them on Reddit, but it’s a different type of engagement. They don’t communicate in long threads. They do drive by posts as they feed their psyche with the dopamine from new feeds they scroll thru. People are really screwed up.

Combine the above with the polarized political environment and it makes it tough to remain addicted to the site. I’ve tried very hard, so far unsuccessfully, to set aside how I view people who have certain political views. I think other people have the same struggle. This is a new feeling because of how politics has really changed in the last 8 years.

Yup. The most frequent posters on those two boards set a disgusting tone of unchecked hostility that's permeated into the other forums.

"unchecked hostility"?  Kindly go fuck yourself with an overgrown cactus wrapped in barbed wire!

Of course you don’t. I take your posts  posts as a sort of avant garde comic performance.
I knew Andy Kaufman wasn’t dead.

I don’t. I never should’ve offered feedback. I saw several others that shared my sentiment and I spoke up in agreement, and perhaps unlike them, I post in CR.  I do not care that a person I do not know, and does not know me, thinks I’m an idiot.

He’s probably right that the issues that me and others have written about here wouldn’t change, specifically, what he’s talking about.  I probably shifted his concern to what irks ME about this place, and I know it irks a large swath of posters here.  However, he continues to insist that pervasive and divisive political talk here isn’t an issue, and he’s wrong. It’s an obvious fix, too. But it’s also really easy to just walk away from, so the State of Surly doesn’t crack the Top 25 of my life’s concerns.
