There is no clear line of succession for VP. Per the 25th the President nominates someone and both houses confirm.

correct and this is what happened when Ford took over for Nixon after the latter's resignation.

There have been several folks on both CNN and MSNBC who have talked about the line of succession and many of them stated that it’s not clear who becomes VP if Pence takes over or even if Nancy takes over.

One guy even stated that if it worked out a certain way, Pompeo could have a say in him becoming one of them (I can’t remember since the segment was earlier today).

What do the legal bros say here?

Not sure if there should be a “Potential Line of Succession” Game Thread or not, especially if trump dies right before the election.

There’s and easy and hard answer:

easy: 25th amendment takes care of this.  But BOTH houses have to approve.  Pence would have to nominate a moderate.

Hard: if no vp is in place, then the presidential succession act comes into play and it’s a garbage piece of legislation.  It would make the Speaker next in line, but it’s not clear she constitutes an “officer” under the constitution, neither would the the Senate President Pro Tempore, so if the Supreme Court struck it, it would go to cabinet officials by department seniority: Pompeo as Secretary of State.

Let’s say he kicks it.

Do the Trumpians stay home on Election Day and open up the down ballot races in red states? Assuming Dems don’t sit on their ass too, which is highly likely.

It may well have that effect.  I think that there might be an issue in each state about a dead candidate being on the ballot (I honestly don't know), but if he's on the ballot, but not gonna be re-elected because he's dead, the plummeting enthusiasm of the MAGA crowd could have huge downballot effect.

It is the party of Trump, and only Trump.  What happens if Trump just disappears?

Man, this would be fascinating.....IF IT WAS A TV SHOW AND NOT REAL FUCKING LIFE WITH REAL HUMAN LIVES IN THE BALANCE.

I guess it begs the question, what’s the filing deadline to be on the ballot?

IIRC, dead candidates have appeared on ballots in the past. Obviously not at this level though.

The quick crackpot theory is states choose electors, so the electors would just vote for the next Republican candidate.

Dude, Dems are not staying home under any situation.  It’s fucking St. Crispian’s Day up in this bitch.

If I recall, this is how "Bingo Bob" Russell ended up as VP on the West Wing.  #EverythingIKnowAboutPresidentialSuccessionILearnedFromTheWestWing

So Biden is taking down his negative campaigning for DOTARD?  What did DOTARD do for McCain?  He still kicks his dead corpse.  He didn't like soldiers that got captured.  Losers.  Well, this loser may have deferred multiple times but karma eventually caught up with him and is kicking his ass.  This dumb f'k isn't nearly getting what should be coming to him.  He told Americans to drink bleach--bless his heart, he was just joking.  The man made fun of a handicapped reporter, Hillary for the flu and Biden for his mask and stuttering.  He's a huuuuge jacka's.  F'k em.  There's a price for deliberately pushing stupid to Americans.  A doctor is too good for this DOTARD and his followers. Isn't there some thoughts and prayers available as a cure?

editing the obvious word for DOTARD.

Pompeo could be problematic.

Just checked Fox News, Trump's surrogates are using these talking points:

  • The President is brave for taking risks and he took them along with the rest of the country because he wanted America to get back to work.
  • China is to blame for Trump getting the virus.

There is no God. Trump will survive.

That might be best case scenario.  But after a solid 3 week stay at Walter Reed so he can't say this is no big deal.  he gets out right before the election and has like 6 days of very little campaigning.  He looks week, his base sees this for what it really is (an ass kicking disease) and he goes down in flames.

This is still a goddamn TV show to the clowns in the WH.  It’s all about perception management.  Bring in the chopper for the optics.

I mean, it has to be one of two things, right?

Either the president is in such bad shape that he has to be kept prone and therefore needs the chopper (or an amberlamps) instead of just taking the limo.

Or Marine One is just another prop in his Look At Me show.

This is taking too long. I’m ready to wildly speculate that the plan is for him to stroll out to marine 1 and give a wave, and he can’t do it.

His hair and makeup must take 90 minutes at least.

But it is odd that they are opting for a helicopter over a 20 minute car ride but they’re not leaving yet.
