Fuck Big 12 refs

I fell asleep after the first half of this one but was tickled to see Mar out there fucking up calls (phantom facemask on BYU on a big sack) before I tuned out. Figured we might be in for some shenanigans that - shocker! - favored the team the big 12 wants to see win to make their playoff case look founded (Big 12 in anyway, but would expedite the “are we sure this is a power conference?” Discussion if terrible CU gets in, for example, with multiple losses including to a Big 10 doormat).

Suffice to say, was not disappointed when I looked up the result this morning.

Same thing happened in the Colorado-TTU game. Unquestionably biased officiating in the Buffs' favour.

Huh, imagine that. We were told we were just imagining the fuckery and the statistical evidence, video evidence were all just sour grapes. Weird.

SEC refs call far from perfect games, but the pain of being under B12 refs was inhumane. Good riddance to that trash fire.

Well, other schools may be empathetic for Utah and say something to the conference. They were all glad we got fucked.

they covered it just now on cfblive but didn't show the actual hold

did not mention the AD going off

they showed the sack on the 1 and then the kevin mar call

it's not christotrumpy to laugh at the suffering of others, is it?  trying to get the new rules down and all......

yormark is fucked

we can't do what the utah AD did because we're big and evil

I didn't watch the game because they both suck, but I'd be interested in seeing this holding call.

It was a bullshit call, especially for Mar. Mar himself called it and #82 had his hand across the front of the defender for a split second and let go very quickly, and it had no effect on the play. Mar lets way more blatant holding go all the time. I was shocked at the call.

I think sec officiating felt like hazing to keep us out of the top spot in year one. They were working the UGA/Vandy games a bit there.

Spoiler
The Utes' AD says the BYU game was ‘stolen’ from them. Here’s a look at the controversial penalty. The Utes dream of an upset win over their in-state rival was hurt by a fourth-down holding call.

Cheers exploded from the record crowd in Rice-Eccles Stadium. BYU quarterback Jake Retzlaff gathered himself from the turf after being clobbered into the wrong end zone on fourth down.

The game appeared over.

For a few moments, the Utes had done the unthinkable. They spoiled their archrival’s season and ended a dreadful four-game losing streak. Bowl game hopes had returned. But, instead, a yellow flag flew from the hands of a Big 12 official and onto the turf.

Utah senior cornerback Zemaiah Vaughn was called for a crucial holding call, which gave the Cougars a new set of downs and, ultimately, a spark of momentum that allowed BYU to nail a game-winning field goal for a 22-21 win in the final seconds on Saturday night.

From that point on, tempers flared. Fingers were pointed. Kyle Whittingham quarreled with a sideline official even before the game reached its closing point. Utah AD Mark Harlan wagged his finger at one league official before entering the tunnel of RES and delivering a scathing rebuke of the Big 12’s officiating.

“I’ve been an athletic director for 12 years. This game was absolutely stolen from us,” Harlan said. “We were excited about being in the Big 12, but tonight I am not. We won this game. Someone else stole it from us. I’m very disappointed. I will talk to the commissioner. This is not fair to our team. I am disgusted by the professionalism of the officiating crew tonight.”

Whittingham added: “I don‘t want to go over those (calls). They are what they are. It’s a ridiculous situation. I’m not going to get into it.

Before angrily tossing a chair to the ground at the end of his post-game news conference, Whittingham shared why he was arguing with officials even after the game was over.

“(It was about the) two previous calls,” he said. “The game was all but over, and then it wasn’t.”

Despite Whittingham and Harlan’s protests, the league officials seem to have made the right call on Vaughn’s penalty — especially when analyzed from different angles.

From ESPN’s broadcast

Here’s the penalty that extended the eventual game-winning drive for BYU

This was a 4th down sack to end the game, but called defensive holding

Announcers say “really good call” but that is very debatable pic.twitter.com/RGpw9Qy8nA

— Pick Six Previews (@PickSixPreviews) November 10, 2024

At the top of the screen on ESPN’s broadcast, Vaughn could be seen pressing BYU wide receiver Keelan Marion at the onset of his route.

Marion cut right, as if he was about to run a slant. Vaughn then appeared to place his hands on the chest of the BYU wide receiver before the Cougars receiver cut upfield.

As Marion ran up the left sideline, Vaughn seemingly kept his hands on the back of the wide receiver’s shoulder pads — nearly causing Marion to trip at the end of his route.

“That’s a good call by the officials,” ESPN’s Brock Osweiler said on the broadcast. “It’s Keelan Marion working against cornerback Zemaiah Vaughn up top and it is clear as day. Vaughn grabs some jersey early on in the down.”

“You’re going to see Vaughn get a little bit handsy. It’s a really good call by the officials.”

Different angle…. What’s your call? pic.twitter.com/miBclj0k7c

— Flashback Ute (@FlashbackUte) November 10, 2024

While this angle might be blurry, it showcases two things:

Vaughn got handsy with Marion three times during his route. The first time the senior cornerback grabbed after Retzlaff snapped the ball. The second time came as Marion shifted up the left sideline.

Vaughn appears to make contact with Marion for a third time mere seconds before Retzlaff was sacked and the flag was thrown.

From the southeast

This was defensive holding. Best angle. Best view. To say otherwise, means you don’t understand the rules.

The BYU WR clearly creates separation from the defender. And the defender reaches out to grab him. pic.twitter.com/4Sl7bWabgr

A view from the south is how the line judge saw the play, and it might be the most damning angle.

The video was shot by a fan in the stands. It‘s blurry, but let’s break it down second by second:

0:03: At this point, Marion has made his first move on his route, which appears to be an inside slant. Vaughn is allowed to contact with the receiver within 5 yards from the line of scrimmage. But this angle appears to show the defensive back grabbing the receiver’s jersey, and it affects Marion’s balance before he eventually cuts up the field.

0:05-0:06: Marion looks to be stumbling as he approaches the 15-yard line and it appears Vaughn is making contact.

0:07: Marion regains his footing and Vaughn disengages with him. But, once again, Vaughn extends his arm into Marion’s pads causing a third and final point of contact before the flag was thrown.

A slow-mo look

This slow-motion look gives the clearest look at Vaughn‘s extended arms. Again, he’s allowed to contact with 5 yards. But the apparent pull on the jersey may have brought on the flag.

So I just slowed down the holding call to get a better view. Db clearly extends his hands impeding the route by JoJo, then pulls the jersey which causes JoJo to lose his balance. Textbook hold.

“Whatever decision the refs made, I don’t think they are trying to get it wrong,” BYU coach Kalani Sitake said. “That’s just part of the game. The refs are part of the game. We were able to capitalize on [the holding] and make a big play. ... Nothing was granted to us.”

A fine coming for Utah’s AD?

There’s little doubt that Harlan has a hefty fine on the way from the Big 12.

(Chris Samuels | The Salt Lake Tribune) University of Utah athletic director Mark Harlan speaks during a news conference at Rice-Eccles Stadium after announcing the school’s entrance to the Big 12 Conference, Monday, Aug. 7, 2023.

But what is the precedent? In February, according to ESPN, Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades was given a $25,000 fine and a public reprimand from the league. It came after he criticized the officiating after Baylor men’s basketball head coach Scott Drew was ejected from a contest.

“I’m not somebody that calls the officials or calls the league after every game,” Rhoades told reporters. “In fact, I never call when it comes to officiating. It’s always about, ‘We need to play better, we need to execute better, we need to play tougher,’ all of those things. But tonight was an embarrassment for this league. We have the best basketball league in the country, and the officiating tonight did not match it. Period. End of story.”

Maybe Utah would rather help paddle OSU's and WSU's canoe. I don't remember UU's outrage on our behalf on the occasions that refs jobbed us. They were snug and happy in their west coast league with no concerns about B12 refs. Then their shared business plan of group freeloading on the media demand for USC games fell through. They had every opportunity to do something called due diligence. KM is not new to the B12. If they cared about officiating, they should have addressed it before signing up for the money (once their old stream dried up). I abhor the way bad officiating ruins a game, but Utah walked into a league previously quite publicly rife with bad officiating. They have to sleep in the bed in which they lie.

Goddamn that call is weak AF. If the refs wouldnt have thrown the flag, no one would have noticed it

Only way that call could be defended at all is if the QB threw a ball in that direction.

He did not. DH had no impact on the play.

Geez...the TE's block had no impact on the play either. What a chickenshit call. Hell, when I called TXHSFB we were told NOT to throw a flag unless the foul impacted the result of the play.

...and to wait 2-3 counts before throwing one. That was god-awful.

* Only time a flag should be thrown quickly is LOS infractions; false starts, offside, illegal snap, etc.

When I was watching the game in real time last night and after seeing the Utah QB go down in the endzone, one of the announcers said there was a flag. I immediately thought, "Well, yeah, one of the blockers in the backfield practically tackled a Utah rusher," because that's the action you saw on the screen as the play unfolded.

I haven't yet seen a good replay that focused on the backfield since the live-action play. All the replays focus on the defensive holding call or are from that far-off wide angle. I'd like to see if BYU got away with holding themselves on that play.

I bet the Utah AD lost his shit in the game because of a bunch of calls/no calls to get to that point. Kind of like the Texas - OSU game in 2022.

Utah AD- “Why the hell is a big game officiated by that Kevin Mar dipshit we fired from the PAC for being an idiot?”

(Answer- he is a good company man)
