Ah the ole hire your positional coaches before the coordinator strategy. Seems like he's a worse Robinson as a good recruiter/bad coach.

Eh, typically a DL coach should be pretty flexible in regards to scheme. A coordinator shouldn't need to handpick all his assistants. Having a say in 1-2 guys is the norm. If you are a front 7 guy you typically want a good secondary dude, or vice versa if your DC is a secondary guy. That may not even matter with Elko since he will be so heavily involved and has experience coaching safeties and linebackers.

Sean Spencer was pretty highly thought of at Penn State before he went to the NFL for 2 years. There is a pretty good chance Billy Napier is an idiot so him letting Spencer go doesn't mean much to me. He certainly has a high bar to meet after what the A&M fans thought of Robinson.

The Gators started off the season 5-2, but after the win against South Carolina in Week 7, Florida didn’t win another game. The Gators lost their final five games to Georgia, Arkansas, LSU, Missouri and Florida State. During the season, the Gators defense allowed their opponent to put up 39 points in four straight games, making it the longest streak in school history.

During Florida’s 52-35 loss against the LSU Tigers in Week 11, the defense gave up 701 yards.

In the Gators final SEC game against Missouri, disappointment followed as the Florida defense couldn’t stop the Tigers offense. The Gators led 31-30 with a minute to go and allowed Missouri to convert on fourth-and-17 to win the game.  In just the LSU and Missouri game combined, the defense allowed 1,200 combined yards.

Elko tried to hire him at Duke, but he took the Florida job instead. Now he gets him at aggy, after proving he's not a good SEC level DL coach.

His defensive lines in the NFL were bad too with the Giants.

He was fired by Florida and sounds like he started looking around with the Giants because he knew he wasn't going to stick in the NFL. Good recruiter that seems like a pretty questionable developer/coach.

This Elko experiment seems like it's not going to work at all. The only upside of the Elko hire is that he's a very good DC and he's not even going to call plays? @NoName

I believe Elko alluded to this while at Duke. He wasn’t going to call the defense next year had he stayed.

The ole “too many HC gameday duties to also call plays” excuse/bullshit. Seems to be working out just fine for Sark and DeBoer.

Yea they really bungled this one up. My guess is that “Plan 2024” resulted in Elko because he was a great DC, he would keep Robinson which would hold together most of their current roster and incoming recruiting class, and that they would buy a good OC with a large assistant coach budget. Well now they lost Robinson, the transfer portal is calling, recruits are decommiting, they’re landing cast off coaches and leftovers from Duke and still nothing has been done on the offensive front. But sure, Elko met with a couple high school coaches and went to the living room of a mid OL recruit so everything is going as expected.

All is well Aggie. Keep up the great work.

Rumor is they are keeping Bryant-Gross Amiento and adding Aristide from Duke as their DB coaches. They've been hyping this big assistant salary pool but so far these don't sound like big hires.

The large salary pool doesn’t mean Elko hires a great coaching staff, it just means his comfort hires get paid a ton.

they mention someone named Tony Jerod-Eddie and i've genuinely never heard of that guy before.

but guess where he went to College?

Spoiler

Texas A&M

ohhh so that's why Looch is pumping him up.

his bio from their website:

Quote

Former Texas A&M and NFL football player Tony Jerod-Eddie was promoted from defensive analyst to on the field assistant football coach by Aggie interim head coach Elijah Robinson.

“Tony is not only a bright young coach, he’s an Aggie and can help us through this transition,” Coach Robinson said. “The players love and respect him and he will do an excellent job.”

Jerod-Eddie came to Texas A&M from DeSoto High School and lettered as a defensive lineman for four years (2008-11) and earned All-Big 12 honors his senior season. He signed a free agent contract with the San Francisco 49ers after the 2012 NFL draft and played for the club from 2012-2016. He spent some time working with the Denver Broncos organization before returning to Aggieland to work with Aggie assistant coaches Terry Price and Elijah Robinson in 2020.

idk why you hire him if he isn't calling plays. it isn't like he is some brilliant schematic guy who brings something new to the table, nor is he an incredible recruiter.

ESPN wrote a big article about him and his play calling at Duke: https://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/34648759/mike-elko-led-duke-unexpected-high-stakes-table

just a snippet here:

Spoiler

FORMER WAKE FOREST defensive back Thomas Brown delivers a version of a story of Elko's playcalling wizardry that has popped up over the years during his nearly two decades as a college coordinator.

Brown remembers a 2015 game at Syracuse his junior year when all week Elko had extreme confidence in a third-down blitz. He knew if the Mike linebacker blitzed and got picked up by the running back, Brown would sail in untouched from safety. He was so sure of the outcome, he made Brown promise to point to the press box to give him props for the call when it worked.

Sure enough, on the first possession, Brown sailed through untouched -- "the hole parted like the Red Sea" -- and delivered a big hit. Orange quarterback Eric Dungey barely had time to release the ball, which fell incomplete. Brown celebrated with his teammates as the punt unit came on the field.

When Brown returned to the sideline, he got word Elko wanted him on the head set. Brown felt like he was being called to the principal's office, saying to himself, "I must have lined up wrong."

Instead, Elko let out a hearty chuckle: "You son of a gun," Elko blurted out, "where was my point?"

This has played out on different headsets and sidelines across the MAC, ACC and SEC over the years. Elko worked for Dave Clawson for 15 years at Fordham, Richmond, Bowling Green and Wake Forest, and he showed a knack for creating free runs at the quarterback.

"Mike got more people unblocked to the quarterback than anybody I've ever been around," Clawson said, adding that Elko was a "savant" in diagnosing and anticipating what opposing coordinators will do.

Clawson told a similar story to Brown. When a Bowling Green linebacker named D.J. Lynch ran in untouched on a blitz and delivered a crunching sack against Kent State, he celebrated elaborately on the field. Clawson recalls Elko chewing him out on the head set, as he not only didn't point to the press box to say thank you for the free path to the quarterback, he didn't complete the play. "Mike was mad that the kid just sacked the guy," Clawson said. "He could've strip-sacked him."

Watch the game film of Elko's stops at Wake Forest, Notre Dame and Clemson, and it's filled with quick gestures of players nodding to Elko's schematic creativity. There's salutes, bows and arrows and points up to Elko in the press box from players thriving on the unimpeded paths their coach drew up.

"If the scheme gets you free, it should be a salute or a bow-and-arrow to the press box," Elko said, stressing the undercurrent of busting chops that came with this rule. "It shouldn't be this, 'Oh my gosh, look at me' celebration because if you get one-on-one and you beat a block and you sack the quarterback, sure, then you can do whatever you want. It was always with levity, but it's funny."

so he is going to not be calling plays, and it's going to be the DC/Santucci calling plays now so he can focus more on being a head coach i assume?

i assume this is scar tissue based on Jimbo calling plays? just so dumb. so so so dumb.

edit: Santucci is staying at Duke?! wow

Sources said that Elko, hired to replace the fired Jimbo Fisher, intends to interview as many as 12 to 15 candidates this weekend for his coordinator positions, to include offensive and defensive coordinator as well as head strength coach.

And happenings at Texas A&M are expected to directly impact Duke University's ongoing coaching search and staffing decisions, multiple sources told FootballScoop.

Perhaps most prominently, per sources, renowned strength and conditioning coach David Feeley has decided not to accept Elko's offer to join him at Texas A&M.

Kevin Johns will be considered for the A&M offensive coordinator position, but Elko also has worked to target numerous offensive play-callers around the sport.

Tyler Santucci, widely considered one of the top up-and-coming defensive minds in college football, will not accompany Elko to College Station.

"not recruited by him" - per 247 his primary was MIke Peterson (OLB coach) and secondary was Spencer. but he plays DL and Spencer was the DL coach so to say he wasn't recruited by the DL coach is really fucking dumb.

What you guys don’t seem to be able to get through your thick skulls is that Elko “gets A&M”. He isn’t about talking, and calling plays, last I checked, is talking, sirs.

No, this man is about doing. And when I say “doing”, I mean doing unspeakable things to the ATM athletic department’s food and provisions budget and then doing horrific shit to their executive bathroom area.

Also, REAL. RECRUITING. You doubt the Elko Era at your own peril.

This is all true. Billy said Elko was ON THE PHONE every day last week. He’s putting in the man hours. Prestige Worldwide.

This is fucking hilarious.  They paid a boat load of money to buy a bunch of mercenaries that did not want to be there in the first place but their offers were so far beyond market value at the time, kids were reclassifying to get some of that money.  They also extended an already ridiculous contract for Jimbo.

Texas ends up accomplishing something they never could, making the CFP.  This was too much for them.  They stupidly fire their HC in a panic with no fucking game plan and exhaust their funds on this contract to where they limit themselves on their next HC hire.  What decent head coach, coordinators, or assistant coaches wants to walk into that dumpster fire knowing they have a Jimbo's shit to clean up and now doing that against Texas that is back on top.  It took FSU nearly a decade to get out of the fucking dumps with what Jimbo left and that was with a down Miami and Florida.

So they proceed to bring back their previous DC, who really wasn't all that great to begin with.  They lose their best assistant that is holding their roster together.  And their solution is to just pay those players more so they don't leave.  Well... that only works to a certain extent.  At some point, these sophomores know they have 1 year left to put good tape before the draft.  Most will likely take less money to get out of the dump.  The only ones that will stay will be the ones that don't have a future NFL on the line and the only reason they will be staying is to cash a check.

Texas has been through this guys.  We've hired G5 coaches that brought shitty staff with them.  We've had rosters full of guys that came to Texas for the wrong reasons.  We've seen first hand what it's like crawling out of the dumps against rivals that are winning and have momentum.  Enjoy this fellas.  This is going to be a long journey for them.  There's only so much money their donors are willing to put up for a shit product.  Nothing about Elko is inspiring to recruits, assistants, coordinators, or the donors.  There will be a decade of aggy tears to come.

Would you say Elko is their Willie Taggert?

Pretty good summary. I hope you're right about the length of time they'll continue to be completely irrelevant outside of their entitled and regularly shouting for no good reason.
