You guys are awful socialists, please do not ever talk about socialism again because you give us a bad wrap. Leave it to actual smart people, go back to your tens of thousands of posts about how important it is that you're a "known poster," it'll at least keep you guys from getting into trouble.

All he's doing is alienating his moderate, more educated voter bloc.  He thinks he's pandering to the fringes where West and Huffhines dwell.  But once he loses that first bloc (or least a massive chunk of them), it won't matter that he pandered to the other far right group because they're already encamped with the other two dipshits.

His strategy of maintaining his current base of traditional GOP'ers and TAB types, while trying to wrangle in some further right dipshits was actually working despite the rest of us scratching our heads.  But he crossed the Rubicon in the last month.  He didn't do enough to appeal to the latter, and did enough to piss off enough of the former.

It's 9 months until primary season though, so I wouldn't organize the deck chairs just yet.  But when his 2018 campaign finance chair says, "We have no idea what's going on anymore."..........that ain't a good sign.  Fucking Fitlump appears to be his wartime consigliere for fuck's sake.  What does that tell you?

On May 10th, Don Huffines officially declared his candidacy.

On May 18th, Greg Abbott put out his orders against mask mandates.

At that point in time, everything was looking better, and Abbott could afford to issue the mandate as a way to appease the right-wingers that Huffines was in danger of peeling off.  There was some grumbling, but counties and schools were willing to abide by it.

But then Delta came on strong.  Delta completely fucked his plans. Abbott could have tossed it to the counties and let them decide.  But Huffines was nipping at his heels.  So he doubled down and got Paxton on board.

And it's not that Huffines is doing all that well in the polls or fundraising against Abbott, but Huffines knows he can't get the moderates in a contest with Abbott, so he is tapping into a group of very passionate/crazy people.

Say what you want about that fucking Mogwai, but Huffines knows how to read the room, and that his best bet is with the GQP.

I agree he’s pissing off both ends of the spectrum by not being far enough on either side but isn’t the far right much more important to him (from a need to appease perspective)? Far right has potential to fuck him in the primary or with a third party nutter in the general but I think his ‘moderate, more educated voter bloc’ will go with him in the primary and the general no matter what as they’re not gonna go west or huffines and would never go D in the general. I’d love to be wrong but don’t see any chance of getting any R’s out of statewide office until the collective traditional D base gets us there by gradual growth. It’s not going to happen by the ‘moderate, more educated voter bloc’ that was willing to vote for Abbott going D. Maybe my personal feeling that I don’t want anyone who voted for Abbott crossing over in the first place bc those people are morally bankrupt and destined for hell anyway and I don’t want to win if it takes aligning with them but I just don’t see a big enough group of those folks crossing over to D in a general to matter.

I was born and raised in Missouri, and owned SRV's first three records before moving to Texas for grad school.  The world at large claims him, and I suspect most music fans would put him on the Mount Rushmore of rock guitar, likely with Hendrix, Page, and Van Halen, but others would of course be in the conversation (Clapton, May, Gilmour, Allman, Beck, Berry among others).

Texans idolize him not nearly so much because he was a Texan, but because he was an absolutely iconic, beyond-prodigious talent.  So there you go.

It's...complicated, and it comes down to how big he thinks these groups are, and if they will show up, because a shitload of them have not showed up in the past.

The February Fiasco and covid have pissed off a shit-ton of folks on both sides..  He is currently his own worst enemy, because all he's doing is reacting, and not being proactive and being a leader, and I don't know that he's really attracting the folks who are on the fringes and that Huffines has more of an appeal to.  Abbott looks impotent as hell right now.

Trump is not on the ticket, and he pulled a helluva lot of people into voting, who don't normally vote for one reason or another, as evidenced by a look at voting records, and by the sheer fact that a lot more people voted in 2020 vs 2016. Trump's endorsement and active campaigning in Texas is also not a guarantee of a win, as we witnessed just a few weeks ago in a Republican runoff.

Trump pulled in 1.2 million votes in 2020 over 2016.  Biden pulled in 1.3 million votes more than Hillary did.  2.3 million voters showed up for the two parties in 2020 that weren't there in 2016 (independent parties lost a lot of votes between '16 and '20 which is why it's not 2.5 million new voters).

Trump pulled in 4,685,047 votes in 2016.  Abbott pulled in 4,656,196 votes in 2018.  A difference of about 29,000 votes.

Biden pulled in 602,000 more votes in 2020 than Abbott did in 2018.

There were 1.5 million votes in the 2018 Texas Republican primary and Abbot won 90%.  Texas has open primaries. Can Huffines pull 600,000 or so votes in the primary? I doubt it, but at the same time I think Abbott believes he has to bury Huffines now, and not risk it, and not risk Huffines showing up as MAGA in the general.

I know that's a lot of numbers, and I'd like to make sense of it all, but I'm throwing them out there to show that there are enough Democratic votes to beat Abbott, that Trump pulled in Texas voters in 2020 that didn't show up for Abbot just two years earlier, that Trump's endorsement is not necessarily a boost, etc.,

I do think Abbott should be scared shitless about those who are more center and those who don't normally vote, and that Trump is not on the ballot.

I trust the Democrats to run a shitty candidate, but Abbot should be trying to figure out how to get that 1.2 million votes that Trump tapped into between 2016 and 2020, because they weren't there for Abbott in 2018 against a no-name candidate.

I think O'Rourke is available.  Same with Wendy Davis.

This would really be a good time for the Castro Brothers to nut up and get deeper into the game.  I mean, if they're ever gonna.  I backed Julian early on for 2020 Democrat POTUS nomination.  Obviously our fundraiser wasn't to really get him nominated, but just to elevate his profile and issues important to Latino/Hispanic voters who are moderates  (and can tilt R or D as we saw actually happened).  He flamed out a little faster than predicted, and has also been relatively quiet in 2021.  I thought maybe something like 2028 would be his time, but figured he'd jump back in the ruckus between now and then, so far---crickets.

1. Adm McRaven. Don’t care what party he runs with

2. Scott Kelly. Twin of Mark Kelly, lot of free coverage just with that. Military Pilot, Astronaut, lives in Houston.

3. Any Castro brother. I’m inclined to think they would figure out that Beto already did the heavy lifting from previous cycles for pumping up registration numbers and turnout. The video of of one of them attempting the blue jeans and cowboy hat getup in South Texas will be more fun than watching them try and speak Spanish.

And that's fair.  Really all there is to choose from a handful of State Senators---Carol Alvarado (I think she has good name recognition), Beverly Powell, John Whitmire, Royce West, and maybe Cesar Blanco.  And then from the Texas House delegation-Castro, Allred, and maybe Cuellar (he's got a good moderate track record).

But as you say, that's a thin bench in terms of the currently elected officials.

I guess you could look at big city mayors...but I just think of Steve Adler and then my brain shuts off like his does.

Kelly should run against Cruz.

And neither Castro has the fucking cajones to do it.  Don't count on it.

How shitty of a human do you have to be to get sued by schoolchildren? Has this happened to a governor since desegregation?

The plaintiffs should incorporate as "Schoolchildren of Texas" so any court case would be "Schoolchildren of Texas vs Abbott." Never discount the power of branding to help your cause.

The lawsuit is styled E.T., et al. v. Governor Greg Abbott, et al.  Not bad marketing to make E.T. your named plaintiff.  Everybody loves E.T.  Everybody.
