Weird how this is happening in some states but not others. It’s almost as if state policies towards masks and vaccines are having a direct impact on the number of people hospitalized and dying.

Is "DERP" an acceptable substitute?  Because I think it should be.

But you are forgetting one simple rule -- the dumber something is, the more it owns the libs.  And the second part is the sole policy calculus left in this state.  We may well get an executive order requiring everyone to eat their own shit daily, because that would totally own the libs.  That's it.  Stop thinking any further than that.

There's a point at which it's A) making him look even weaker, which is not owning the libs and B) driving away the people he needs in the general.

He does not need to do these things - fight masks or vaccines to win his primary.

I get that this is about 2024, but making himself look weak, and potentially making his race next year a lot closer than it should be are not things that will get you over the finish line in 2024.

Shit, Huffines is mocking him for not being able to stop mask or vaccine mandates as it is, and that's what the GQP will do.

It's weird how Abbott has lost all sense of political savvy that he had.

It's not that he's lost it, it's that he's stuck in a party where there is no winning move that doesn't consist of "be even dumber."  This is a base that just booed Donald Fucking Trump for not being dumb enough (because he recommended vaccines).

How do you craft a winning strategy when that's your base?  Honestly, at this point, you just start acting out scenes from Idiocracy and presume that will carry the day.

I don't know if Abbott jetpacks into the stadium or what the fuck, but has he given any thought to how those 110,000 people (including stadium personnel) get into/out of DKR for a football game?  They don't just will themselves in there with horse paste and wiggling their nose.  They have to pass through tightly packed gates, security areas, and scanning entrances.  They then negotiate sometimes hundreds of yards of unventilated walkways, corridors, and concourses with no fresh air.  Then, multiple times a game, they will return to those areas to use bathrooms, get concessions, socialize, etc.  It's not an outdoor game, Governor Abbott.  It's an unventilated logistical shitshow that will make Sturgis look like an NIH clean room.

I didn't think the strategy of "Win the Texas GOP primary by killing as many Texans as possible" would work.  Last guy to really try it was Santa Anna and he finished a distant third.  But things are looking up for Greggy.

UT should require the unvaccinated fans to take a covid rapid test at the start of every quarter at football games.  Let them stand in a testing line for most of the game.

Pretty much my same trajectory. first election to vote in was 2000 and having grown up in a conservative family in Texas I seemed to think I knew what I was doing. Boy did I regret that.

You show yourself to be an actual leader and you do what's right, and you dare the Trumpkins to vote (D) or stay home , and dare them to let the Communist Socialists Marxist Atheist Muslims win.

You do that, and you get some moderates/fence sitters to come back into the (R) fold, which is what you will need to win in Texas in the future.

Of course, plenty of Trumpkins will say "fuck you" and stay home or vote (D) out of spite, but shit, plenty of Trumpkins weren't that politically engaged prior to 2016, so you roll the dice that the people who were not crazy and who kept electing (R)s in Texas will continue to do so.

I don't know who is worse as far as UT grads - he or Huffines.

Not only that.  They used to date.  Hence all the tension.

I try to be nice.  At the end of the day, I don't want the unvaxxed morons to die, as frustrating as their ignorant, selfish behavior is.  But right now I'm a big fan of that tree that snapped Abbott's back.

Yeah, this is like blocking the city of Galveston from issuing evacuation orders as a Cat 5 rolls up the coast.

Saw the new EO.

Y'all remember Brisket's axioms of the new GQP Hellscape Era, right?  Just remember these, and you'll always know what's going to happen next:

1 -- it only gets worse

2 -- there is no bottom

That's all you need to know to understand the entirety of the GQP approach to the universe.

Here’s the play: he’s doing this right after the Delta peak. Cases/deaths fall. Post hoc ergo propter hoc Abbott saved lives AND protected your rights.
easily gets re-elected, next stop White House.

Not entirely wrong.

Also, the mask mandate fight going on between Abbott and local gov'ts is a "buying time" game.   Nobody is saying it, but the goal is to have the mandates in place for just a few more weeks, to get us past the worst of this wave.

Side note -- I heard from a reasonably reliable source that pretty much every person on the litigation side of the AG's office has been dragooned into working on mask mandate litigation.

Pretty much this. They must cater to the base which means the base dictates policy despite the base being made up of idiots. It's like If you are a company that has a customer base made up of all butt pirates than all your goods and services will be dedicated to butt piracy.

At least butt piracy would be a purpose (that purpose being....butt stuff).  The "purpose" now is just the whims of a nihilist mob that has no actual purpose itself, other than inflicting pain/outrage on its perceived enemies.  They hate "those egghead libruls."  What makes smart people mad and tear their hair out?  Stupid stuff does!  So let's do stupid stuff!   Let's smear ourselves in shit, and lick it off of each other -- see those eggheads over there yelling "what are you doing?  STOP!  You'll make yourselves sick!"  Ain't that great?  Hurry up and smear some more shit on me, and let's make em REALLY mad!

It's a mass fucking psychosis.
