He doesn't give half a shit about Texas or Texans.  We're a stepping stone.

Abbott could very well be in survival mode and trying to just win next year, never mind 2024.

Abbott is getting shit on by a range of Fox News talking heads from Chris Wallace to Tucker Carlson.  Huffines has people backing him, who still have Trump's ear, and Trump has taken some thinly veiled potshots in the direction of Abbott over the border stuff.  Abbott has been going harder to the right ever since Huffines jumped in the race.

Huffines isn't going to beat Abbott in the primary, but he could damage Abbott quite a bit (forcing Abbott to take even crazier stances and pissing off even more people), and he could even destroy Abbott's career if he runs 3rd-party and gives the election to the Dems.

I shouldn't say that - Huffines could very well end up with Trump's endorsement, which would be hugely for the primary, the likes of which we've never seen.

I see our governor is authorizing vote recounts in four counties at trump's request.  Hey Governor Abbott, why the fuck don't you try governing our state instead of kissing a traitorous bastard's ass?  Just do your fkn job.

The majority of the voting population of this state sees kissing Trump’s ass as his primary responsibility. Everything comes back to that.

These. There is no “job” for any Republican official other than to suck Orange cock. That’s it. It’s the only job. “Governing” is 100% inconsistent with that job. That’s why you’ll have miserable pandemic results, a grid that will fail again and again and again, etc. To govern would go against their core belief: suck orange cock and cause suffering.

A part of me is rooting for the audit to turn up a bunch more votes for Biden, and reduce Trump's votes, both to embarrass Trump and the TRP, but also make Abbott look even weaker than Trump is making him look.

But unfortunately, I don't think anything can make Greg Abbott look more cowardly and weak than he's already doing on his own.

It's fucking embarrassing how that fucking New Yorker Trump, former Democrat for many, many years, friend of the Clintons, is making Abbott, a UT grad and self-proclaimed "proud Texan", dance at the drop of a hat.

And it's only going to get worse - lest we forget, the 2006 Texas Gubernatorial Election:

  1. Rick Perry - 39%
  2. Chris Bell - 30%
  3. Carole Keeton Rylander Johnson Jakobi Coleman Strayhorn - 18%
  4. Kinky Friedman - 12%

The idea of Huffines and/or West tossing their hat into the general absolutely scares the shit out of Abbott, when Trump barely won by 6% last year, especially if somebody like Beto or MM is on the Dem ticket.

This audit is all long game for the 2022 and 2024 elections. Abbott / his Secretary of State / state house isnt going to accept harris county results on false lies of massive fraud

This. The GQP has realized that their only way to hold on to power is to simply refuse to put the points on the board when the other team scores. States get to set their own election rules, and the GQP is going to take that to the extreme: your vote counts if the GQP says it counts, that’s the only rule.

We already live in an autocratic failed state, some of y’all just haven’t realized it yet.

cruz won by 2.6%, that's pretty damn close

They can make all the claims they want, but they can't toss out 1.6 million votes, especially when the county you are talking about has been voting the same way the past several elections.  It's not like the county has been putting out 800,000 or 900,000 votes for a Republican and a few hundred thousand for a Democrat, and then SURPRISE out comes 1.5 million votes for a Democrat.

In 2016, Trump won Texas by 9% and 800,000 votes.

In 2020, Trump won by 6% and 600,000 votes.

So yeah, Abbott should be a little worried, especially without Trump on the ballot.  And if the fucking Mogwai jumps into the general as a third party/MAGA candidate, Abbott will absolutely be shitting bricks and looking for an escape hatch, because if he loses in 2022, he's a no-go for any future nation-wide races.  People (BMDs) prefer that Texas candidates actually carry Texas.

Who is going to stop them?

The Republican Texas Secretary of State?

The 9-0 Republican Supreme Court of Texas?

The 6-3 conservative US Supreme Court?

For starters, Abbott's political future going down the shitter when the rest of the nation sees him trying to steal votes from over a million and a half people.  That will leave a helluva mark with the rest of the country, since his reputation will go from "Shitty Trump Lackey" to "Third World Tinpot Dictator".  That's the kind of shit that will get people out to vote against the GOP.

But mainly the Feds.

The shit-ton of people who will take to the streets in Texas.  Abbott doesn't have enough DPS troopers and National Guard to stop them - at most, DPS and NG might be able to protect state facilities/infrastructure in various parts of the state, and that's pushing it - even with 12-hour shifts, and with everybody deployed, that's 11,000-12,000 troops and DPS troopers available at most.

The corporations that will bail on Texas.

The counties/cities/businesses saying "fuck you, you want to take our votes, we'll withhold our taxes and the over 50 fees the Comptroller collects."

I don't know where this idea that the GOP is going to try and disenfranchise Harris County (or any other county) came from, but it's just as nutty as the Deep State conspiracies being pushed by the Q crowd.  It would destroy Abbott's career, and it would cause lasting problems for the GOP.

Right now, the GOP needs a shitload of people to stay on the fence about politics, especially in the era of Trump.  This kind of action gets people off the fence.

Here's the thing:  to keep power in Texas, the GOP doesn't have to prevent big-ass counties from voting, they just have to make sure and get their people out to vote, and they have to convince various groups that they are the best choice.  It's hard without Trump on the ballot ,and with shitty Republican politicians, but like the Hispanic vote in certain parts of Texas for instance, they can appeal to their more conservative side.

They wouldn't throw out 1.6 million, they'd try to throw up, say, 127,000. Which is how many they tried to throw out last time and got really fucking close to pulling off, and the only reason they didn't succeed is they waited too long to object. The judge they pulled was sympathetic to their absolute bullshit claim because he was a Republican who wanted Republicans to win, but ruled against them because he realized that it was too late in the process to be able to pretend publicly that he was just enforcing the law.

The law isn't real. I don't know how many times we have to explain this to you optimists. The actual Texas Election Code and the Constitution are just a bunch of words on paper that need judges who are committed to the rule of law to enforce them. They're not going to stand up and bitchslap Greg Abbott if he tries to steal an election. They need judges who are committed to the rule of law to enforce the protections they purport to create. Unfortunately, we're stuck in Texas, in the 5th circuit, both of which are completely dominated by Republican judges who will do whatever they think they can get away with doing without having angry mobs burn their houses down.

SCOTUS stole the Presidency for the GOP over twenty years ago and that was long before the Federalist Society got its fucking hooks into the entire federal judiciary. Last year when people first started freaking out about covid, SCOTUS literally rewrote the law so that Wisconsin voters who had timely requested mail ballots couldn't vote by mail. Also last year, SCOTUS upheld a poll tax in Florida to ensure that felons couldn't vote, after the state had overwhelmingly passed an amendment to re-enfranchise felons who had served their time. There are dozens of other examples of things they shouldn't have been able to do. That's because there is nothing they can't do. There is merely what they are and are not willing to do, which they determine based on how many people will get furiously and maybe violently angry in response.

I can tell you how this goes:

Texas SOS:  We believe the votes coming from Harris County are fraudulent.  The election conducted by the county is rife with issues and we will not accept the results from the county.

SCOTX: Yeah, that's fine.  9-0.

SCOTUS: Local issue.  Ruling stands, 6-3.  Scathing dissent by Kagan and Sotomayor.  Alito, Roberts and Kav issue their ruling by rubbing the Constitution up and down their ass crack.

Texas Lege to businesses who leave Texas:  GO BACK TO COMMIEFORNIA, WE DON'T WANT YOU

55% of Texans cheer.

They want to do this so Civil War 2.0 happens.

Does anybody other than Gerg think he has a popcorn fart's chance of becoming the Republican nominee for POTUS in 2024? We keep talking about his tenuous hold on his Texas gubernatorial position and some think he's got eyes on the Oval Office? The absolute best he could possibly hope for is VP for somebody else's (Trump or DeSantis) bid. I don't see Trump picking him anyway, not after the Mogwai gets done with him. Plus, I think Dotard likes running mates who don't get paralyzed by falling trees.

This.  Any POTUS hopes he had, tied to being the nominee of the GQP/Party of Trump, are done.  DOA.  He's been cast out of the favored MAGA circle, and he's done.  He may still win his race in Texas because Texas voters will never vote for socialist communist librul dems, but he's done as a national MAGA candidate.

Yep. I think everything he's doing is his attempt to hold onto the job he has rather than thinking any further ahead than that. Gerg doesn't usually think more than one move ahead.

Trump doesn't want someone in a wheelchair upstaging him with their ability to effectively navigate ramps with or without assistance.

Abbott's not rolling into the Executive Branch in 2024.

The positive if Abbott were to get the 2024 Republican nod, perhaps Joe would ask him to stand up and acknowledge the crowd in one of their debates.

People have said he has a team prepping for 2024, but that could be as simple as one or two people in his '22 election team who are simply reaching out to BMDs, Iowa experts, etc.

Somebody is making money off of it - Once again @Brisketexan this is the grift we need to be doing.

Has he been fully cast out yet?  I know the Mogwai is doing everything possible to poison the well against him, but as long as he still has Trump's endorsement, he's in play.  DeSantis seems to be the one more on the ropes - he has to be able to reliably deliver Florida if he wants to be on the ticket.

Of course, Abbott needs us to get through the winter without another ERCOT fiasco....

Greg is going to fuck this up.  I'm surprised the Mogwai hasn't been tweeting about it.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/10/04/us/george-floyd-harris-county-texas-pardon-recommendation/index.html

Quote

The Texas State Board of Pardons and Paroles voted unanimously Monday to recommend a full posthumous pardon of George Floyd for a 2004 drug conviction, according to hearing minutes provided by the board to CNN.

An application for the pardon was filed in April on behalf of Floyd and his surviving family. In the application, Allison Mathis of the Harris County Public Defender's Office said the request was filed because the arresting officer in Floyd's case, Gerald Goines, "manufactured the existence of confidential informants to bolster his cases against innocent defendants."

Quote

The ultimate decision on whether to grant Floyd clemency rests with Gov. Greg Abbott, Ogg said. CNN has reached out to the governor's office for comment on whether a pardon will be issued.

It gets even better/worse - the arresting officer was a dishonest piece of shit.

Quote

Goines arrested Floyd on February 5, 2004, alleging at the time that Floyd possessed crack cocaine "and that Floyd had provided the drugs to an unnamed 'second suspect' who had agreed to sell the drugs to the undercover Goines. The 'second suspect' was not arrested, Goines noted in his offense report, "in a [sic] attempt to further the narcotic trafficing [sic] in this area."

Quote

In 2019, Goines was involved in a high-profile case known as the Harding Street killings, in which he obtained a warrant for a "no-knock" raid from a municipal judge under false pretenses, Ogg told CNN. The raid left two people dead and five police officers injured.

Goines, a 35-year law enforcement veteran, was indicted on two charges of felony murder and tampering with a government record, Ogg said.

I miss the days when racists were at least ashamed to say it out loud.

Section. 10.

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

No State shall, without the Consent of Congress, lay any Duty of Tonnage, keep Troops, or Ships of War in time of Peace, enter into any Agreement or Compact with another State, or with a foreign Power, or engage in War, unless actually invaded, or in such imminent Danger as will not admit of delay.
