No shit. Who gives a fuck if she’s not any good. She doesn’t support the murder of children, or the downfall of democracy

I'm not saying anything about her personally. She never had a chance and she never campaigned. If I were a political party, my basic strategy would be to nominate someone who has a chance and then spend time campaigning.

Well apparently that didn't work out for Lupe. Maybe if she had been the former V.P. and actually campaigned it would have worked.

Abbott wasn’t nearly as controversial back then as he is now.  Based on the stupidity of this state I expect his new found shitiness to lead to a bigger margin of victory this time around.

It would help if Democrats would nominate someone other than Lupe Valdez.

No, I don’t think it would have. Because in that same election, the most reviled figure in Texas politics at the time, Ted Cruz (Abbott may have something to say about that now), defeated the best Democratic statewide campaign in the 21st century in an extremely Democratic year, by over 200k votes.

Texas has shown us what it is. The turnout in 2018 and 2020 is a more than big enough sample size to make that conclusion.

Demographics are still changing. And I bet a sizeable chuck of Cruz voters died of old age and/or COVID.

Now knowing what it feels to be the laughing stock of the nation, I don’t think these transplants will make the same mistake again. If the Dem turnout is good, Ironsides could be in trouble:

A CNN exit poll showed O'Rourke beat Cruz among native Texans, 51-48 percent. In contrast, 57 percent of people who had moved to Texas said they voted for Cruz, compared to 42 percent for O'Rourke.

That doesn’t sound right. All the people moving in are commies from California, or illegal commies from Mexico.

I believe it’s a real phenomenon that a lot of people who voted for Trump are ashamed to admit that they support him and that he appeals to them so it skews the polling data.

Nah, it’s two problems

1) Texas Democrats have institutionalized failure and

2) Beto isn’t and wasn’t a good candidate for statewide office and his solipsism and lack of empathy cost him the Senate race and will likely Make Abbott Governor Again.

Texas is there for the taking and has been since 2012 or so, but Democrats keep waiting for Republicans lose rather than assemble a winning coalition.

Fair points.  But what about Cruz' solipsism and lack of empathy?

Sorry, you are going to have to give concrete examples of Beto's solipsism anf lack of empathy.  If anything, I get the impressions he is the only candidate with empathy.

1.) Absolutely, and the previously mentioned Lupe Valdez is a shining example of that, but O’Rourke’s campaign largely went its own way in terms of organizing and fundraising.

2.) Beto was as good a statewide candidate as any in 2018, when the political climate was very favorable to Democrats and he had the opportunity to set the narrative about himself. I agree he’s damaged goods to an extent now, after the mess of a presidential campaign and heading into a Republican leaning year.

I had to look up the word “solipsism,” so +rep for that. What a specifically are you referring to in terms of solipsism and lack of empathy costing him the election? Perhaps I’m missing your point, but the idea that Greg Abbott is going to win this election because the other candidate lacks empathy is tough for me to buy given his track record, and especially in light of Uvalde.

I think he could he/his campaign could have done more in South Texas when he ran for Senate, but ultimately it’s hard to get past the simple partisan math.

First, you're making a great point about his 2018 campaign going it's own way - it's why he caught fire early, but ultimately he weighed the campaign down. And now as the standard bearer he's going through a well-established process of assisted suicide facilitated by the TDP's Failure-Industrial Complex.

So - about his flaws. Beto O'Rourke DID have the opportunity to set the narrative, similar to what Obama did in 2008 and what Trump had in 2016 (not great as analogies, but handy as well known examples), and whereas Obama made his campaign about this wonderful blank slate of Hope and Change that anybody could project whatever on and Trump had this thematic call to action around Making America Great Again that has literally motivated people to organize boat parades, Beto made his campaign theme ... Beto. And so Beto spent the second half of his 2018 on this apology tour about his personal journey through a life of privilege, the luxury of his wife having the time to raise the kids, etc. It probably didn't cost him votes, but the opportunity cost was not staking out a clear thematic "why" for his coalition, or make it about their role as supporters  and the outcome for them as individuals.  He repeatedly kept his hands clean and refused to go for Cruz's throat on stage at debates. Instead, he made it about him, just as he made his presidential campaign about him. It's always been about Beto and his personal journey.

People misunderstand what empathy is. Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings of another person. Penn Gillette talks about how magicians have to have the empathy to see through the eyes of another person and accept what they see is real for them. Abbott has that (or at least is well advised on how to look like he does), and Beto doesn't really.  Take the video of Beto confronting Abbott. The story played well enough, but it wasn't the BIG MOMENT that it could have been, and here's why - Beto comes from the through the video from the center, with his back to the camera, and is speaking while looking up, and Greg Abbott and Patrick don't respond. We can't hear Beto, and we can't see his face.  Instead, he is shouted down by the Uvalde mayor (framing the mayor as his opponent, not Abbott), and the last words we hear are the Mayor calling him a sick SOB while he's escorted  out. It's terrible optics.  What he should have done was come up the right hand aisle  and cheated out 1/4 turn so the cameras on the left would see him and Abbott in profile while he points his finger and the microphones could pick up what he was saying and get a good video and still image.
And while you could say he didn't want to mug for the cameras or was being authentic, that's really the problem - he's literally crashing a press conference and SHOULD exactly mug for the cameras and sell the moment as hard as he can. If you are trying to play to an audience and won't do the basics to help them see or hear you, it's because you don't care.

I'm kind of novice when it comes to guns so please excuse what might seem like a silly question, but do you gun guys like AR-15s so much because the narrow barrel actually hugs your little pecker when you jerk off into it while something like a shotgun barrel barely makes contact?

Lol, rifled... for his pleasure.

This is a terrible post and you should feel bad for posting it.

Should he have set up some mood lighting and maybe had some dark and ominous walk up music playing in the background as well?

To listen to Abbott talk about any Texas problem (real or not), you would think that he’s the opposition candidate and not the governor for 7 years. And part of the governing party/leadership for 26 years.

how long does he have to continue to fail but we will keep electing him? Unfortunately I know the answer to that question. He looks and talks the part of what many white Texans think a governor should be.

reminds me of how during dotard's second campaign he continually pointed to Biden as the reason for all of the problems in the county while not acknowledging that Biden was in fact, not yet President. It's like he was saying, "Hire me again so I can fix all the problems I created!". No doubt Abbott has adopted that tactic.

Why Beto didn’t have glass shattering music playing in the background and send the Texas Rattlesnake out there to stun the entire row of statewide leaders is symptomatic of the hubris he has shown throughout his career. If he simply reversed decades of neglect by one party in one cycle he would’ve easily been a hero, but has embarrassingly flamed out worse than anybody ever expected. I’ve personally seen Abbott hurricarrana his opponents over the top rope while projecting empathy to his ringside partner, and for that Abbott by 11.

In fairness for Abbott, it’s the Texas Legislature is that is preventing a GOP agenda from being passed. 🙄

time to start the Huffines for Gov (independent) rumors. I doubt it would be that difficult too convince that little  egomaniac to do it, and within a week every aggy in the state would be onboard.

The fact that Abbott canceled his NRA appearance, as did Crenshaw and Patrick, is huge. And then Trump made sure and gave him shit about it at the convention during Trump’s speech.  Abbott had to shit a brick about that, since he’s trying to pretend to have some sympathy for the families, but he’s trying to outdo Trump and DeSantis in other areas.
