Abbott being Abbott

Abbott and his crew have already done enough damage to our district. People really don't understand (understandably) how public schools are funded in Texas. They look at their property tax increases and think more is going to their kids schools. It's not. Fixed amount per kid hasn't raised since 2019 and we would need to raise it 50% just to be "average" in the United States.  It is slow killing the state.

Tell me more about that... for real, do you have something with some background on that?  There is a jackass who keep ranting about AISD funding and ignores recapture and thinks vouchers are going to magically fix everything.  That stat about 2019, etc is what is of interest to me.

All we need to do is plant seeds on conservative social media about things that are beneficial to the state. The way Abbott's culture war stuff works, he would jump on it in a special session (see Colony Ridge).

  • Kids in low-funded public schools are dropping out to work for Mexican cartels.
  • Our private schools are drowning in fentanyl and vouchers will make the epidemic worse.
  • AR-15s are the preferred weapon of Chinese communists trying to buy up Texas farmland.

Recapture is really the root of the issue, it's ignoring the 800lb gorilla in the room to not consider it. It's offensive how much of my property taxes are going into a new new highschool football stadium for some shit hole speed trap town

You know... on this one, its funny how the school voucher people who rail on the ills of public schools have no idea about the drug problems in private schools... more money, more drugs (and mommy and daddy's pills)

To add, like this year Abbott will talk about new funding for education on top of that, but that's to "cover" his add-ons... and it never does.  They are adding "billions" to system this year for school security. But the amount they add to an elementary school that will be required to have an armed guard is like $30k.  Our district can't currently find guards to hire at $50-60k. So the new "billions of school security funding" the state is giving out district will likely requiring eliminating a teaching position at every elementary school to cover the required expense.

But hey at least every man woman and child regardless of mental health state has ready access to an AR-15! I mean sure there are laws, but we've seen in practice that they do not stop mass shooters from getting their means. Thank god for patriots like @fattyflattie that ensure that children have the chance to be murdered in their very own classroom that's overfilled due to teacher shortages

They don't have to raise prices. A private school can just say no, and take the voucher money from the families they want to let in.

They don't have to...but you think many sure wont?

Story is unsurprising.  But before you throw rocks at Kirk, understand how things work in the current regime.

The request is NOT "hey, please help out the governor/the governor's pal."

The request is "hey, please help out the governor/the governor's pal....OR ELSE."

It's gone well beyond political patronage, and is now a full-on political protection racket.  You can't afford to get crossways with the governor's office.  They'll make you suffer the consequences.

And remember, that is EXACTLY the type of government that the GQP wants you to have.  It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Yes, that's my belief too. Pretty sure that waterpark, however, is from Robin Hood.

I'm for the Robin Hood idea, but I think something like 50% of AISD funds are subject to recapture. Meanwhile, my kid goes to school in portable buildings and a main school that's 40 years old.

Yeah, and those districts should be spending THAT money on THEIR LOCAL EDUCATION instead of using recapture bucks. The money is there in the local communities, they just don't want to spend THEIR money on education.

Reminds me of the time our younger daughter got selected for a group meeting with the head of the Gifted & Talented program at her elementary school.  She was probably 6 or so at the time.

The first thing the teacher said to the group was "your child is not gifted and your child is not particularly talented.  This program has no effect on future success.  OK, so let's dive in."

Those "interviews" for a 4 year old are fukcing overblown. My son had to do them, it is literally a counselor asking him if he can count to 10, what his first and last name is, etc. If he actively doesn't show some form of personality disorder and doesn't try to eat the carpet, it's good. It's really an IQ test.

9 hours ago, atomheartbevo said:

That's not going to fuck up a kid - if they don't get in, I imagine the parent(s) will probably not be very happy.

I don't even like the whole interview thing for public school kids going into one of the specialty programs in junior high (performing arts, STEM, etc.).

Fuck up a kid? See above. That's an absurd fucking concept for  a 4 year old. It's a counselor in a room asking questions that child will never remeber, like how many parents he has, etc. I can't speak to the parents aspect, there's a lot of shitty parents, and probably a lot more shitty rich parents. That being said, one of the things that private schools will tell you is that the older your child gets, the harder to gain admission into the school is, per se. That's becuase classes are small, and demand rises the older the kid gets, assessment tests get harder, etc, so they sort of tell you that by getting them in at the pre-school traunch, where they will always remain enrolled unless they flunk out or are expelled, is the path of least resistance. It's a compelling pitch, particularly if your child might have a penchant for eating carpet.

But I reject the concept that this "fucks up a kid" out of hand.

Robin Hood is fucked up. I know the stats on Austin supporting damn near the rest of the state, but there's some Houston districts that give a ton of money as well and don't see shit back.

It's your choice to live in a godless city full of left wing Fentany-stas who want to turn us all trans-gay.

We should be taking your $ so we can give it to the god-fearing districts who know the right books to ban.

The beatings will stop once the moral improves.

Unless I'm misunderstanding you, this (your post) is fucked up. It's a bond that's put on an election, and people either vote for it, or against it. Yes, they don't want to spend their money on education, they want to spend it on football stadiums. That's my whole point, recaputure bucks aren't building most mega stadiums. If that waterpark is, that's fucked up. But recapture dollars aren't what's building big HS stadiums in Katy or Dallas. It's additional taxpayer funds from bonds they elected to pass.

I'm sure if there were a distrct by district bond put up increase funding of schools via private funds, it might pass. Maybe. But those bonds don't go up for vote. Or if they do, we don't really get a lot of publicity for the results. But the situaiton your'e suggesting isn't accurate. But to be clear, anywhere district funds are building mega stadiums, yes, that's fucked up.

The recapture program is the most hypocritical thing I think the R party does. What is the worst thing (to an R) that you can call an R? A socialist.

What is the recapture program if not socialism?

They bitch about socialism when it's dollars flowing out of their pockets but when it's dollars flowing in, it's a bedrock of their platform.

The entire economic platform is the redistribution of wealth from the future into current asset values. Not new.

Yeah, crazy part of Austin is how much lower their teacher pay is too. A brand new zero experience hire in say Katy ISD is paid more than a 20 year veteran of Austin ISD.

Well, it makes sense when you consider how much money Austin ISD and the surrounding areas have to ship out to other districts in the state.

Emphasized for MF truth.

Indeed, it is our ENTIRE GOVERNING PHILOSOPHY IN THIS STATE, REFLECTED IN EVERYTHING OUR STATE GOVERNMENT DOES.  Human beings are a consumable expense, not a capital asset to invest in.  Instead of setting aside seed stock for future plantings, we are gorging on everything in the silo, pointing to our fat bellies, and saying "would our bellies be this fat if everything wasn't going great??"

It's selfish, short-sighted insanity.  Which might as well be our new state motto.

In all seriousness, the ban on Covid vaccine mandates is a wake-up call to the business community. They're starting to realize that this minority calling the shots is not business-friendly if the business interests get in the way of certain very large donors' social agenda.

We are inching up on A BILLION dollars going from AISD back to the state.  The people who complain the loudest about the district want that sweet sweet voucher money... "to help the poor" (not kidding... had an argument with someone who led with that until it was clear he wants that money money)

Oh... and this...

"Texans deserve more education for their money. La Joya’s water park serves as a reminder that Texans can support their public schools without endorsing every spending decision — and tax hike — made by school officials,” Stephanie Matthews, vice president of public affairs at the Texas Public Policy Foundation, wrote the Houston Chronicle.

La Joya ISD, however, maintains that the public was largely supportive of the project.

“We’ve met with approximately 1,200 [people] and I can tell you there was a very positive acceptance by our neighbors here,” Garza said."

Yeah... I bet

Yeah, they won't do shit. Because at the highest levels, most of those guys are Republicans. I bet Tillman Fertita is all about that republican donations. It's the small businesses that will suffer, but they'll just blame Joe Biden and inflation anyway.

Abbott is in the news.  Nobody tell him that if millions have been apprehended at the border under Biden, that means the border is not open.

Abbott endorses Trump. So that means the Governor of Texas is a fascist. That's right, a flat-out f*cking fascist who does not care about facts, truth, violent insurrections, attempts to steal elections, or mass shootings. All right out of the fascist playbook.

And Abbott rolls around on the UT football sideline, chats it up with McConaughey, Clemens, CDC, and other UT celebs.

And then there is Musk, another fascist, with Tesla in Austin and rockets flying off the Texas coast.

And not one media outlet, not one business exec, not one political leader, not one sports figure will call any these fascist f*ucks what they are: fascists!

Fascists and fascism are being completely normalized in Texas and America. Right smack in the middle of Austin, no less.
