A compelling deconstruction of his analysis.

I know I’m spinning my wheels with you but regarding Nate’s analysis he ignores all the subsequently released evidence about the Russian interference which made the Comey letter have a measurable impact.

We know the Russians were behind the Wikileaks email dumps and amplifying them on every social media platform available.  We know they were out to hurt Hillary and help Trump.

What was the Comey letter about?  Hillary’s emails

Nate doesn’t take into account the Russian influence machine magnifying and distorting the implications of the Comey letter.  The two events were directly connected through a common denominator:  Hillary’s emails.

Perhaps Nate should ask the question: If the Russians weren’t interfering in the election, would Comey’s letter had a measurable impact? Would Comey have even written the letter?

We will never know because the Russian interference isn’t measurable. All we know is it was a very sophisticated multi-pronged MILITARY OPERATION involving hacking, identity theft, cyber subversion, and agents of influence on the ground in every corner of the Trump campaign.

It was kind of a big deal.

Anastasis loves to pretend there’s a debate on whether or not the Russians were solely responsible for the Trump presidency or had a meaningful impact on the outcome of election.

The Russians were going to win regardless of the outcome of the election.  They just won more with Trump.

I think the Russians were setting up Trump to be a major burr under HRC's saddle once she won POTUS.    They were going to keep using Trump and group as a pot stirrer by feeding them active measures like stuff just to keep the US in strife.

I wonder if any of this would have been investigated if Trump would not have won.

I dunno, seems kinda sophisticated.

Agreed.  Just the Q stuff alone, the way it was built and put out, that's pretty sophisticated.   It was a simple use of conspiracy nuts, but it was so solid and inclusive from the start with the foundation of the deep state that would be the ultimate invisible villain.  As ludicrous as the Q shit is, it still thrives.  That's not just luck.

Investigated? Yes.  Made public? Probably not

Because it would have been a counterintelligence operation, the IC would have likely neutralized the foreign influence actors and hit Trump with only the financial crime charges.

You are spinning your wheels because your active measure peer review of silver's analysis lacks any real substance.

If you want to critique his conclusions in a meaningful way, it would be useful to propose an alternative analysis.

But what you instead leave us with is an argument from ignorance. The impact is in fact measurable with sufficient information to inform modeling.  Nate hints at it in his final paragraph, which I read as suggesting that a differences in differences analysis would provide a more robust assessment.

Now the latter is actually an interesting question, since we know that Comey was directly influenced in his decision making regarding his press conference, which ultimately necessitated the letter being penned, by a Russian intelligence document that was known by the FBI to be fake. I don't think that we need any sophisticated modeling to handle that one.  Comey, influenced by the content of a totally debunked Russian intelligence document, combined with other influencing factors such as Bill's tarmac meet up with Lynch, set in to play a series of acute events that had a direct and measurable impact on the outcome of the 2016 election, tilting the result to Trump. But Russia! https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/how-a-dubious-russian-document-influenced-the-fbis-handling-of-the-clinton-probe/2017/05/24/f375c07c-3a95-11e7-9e48-c4f199710b69_story.html

No, it’s not because you can’t compare it to a model without Russian interference.

Nate’s analysis is dated and he doesn’t acknowledge the Russians being responsible for the hacked and leaked emails.  A fact that emerged in the Mueller indictments months after Nate wrote this article.

from Nate’s article

The hacked emails from the Clinton campaign and the DNC (which may or may not have had anything to do with the Russians) potentially also were more influential than the Russian efforts detailed in Friday’s indictments.

Regardless, Nate was only looking at one little slice of the Russian operation.

We now know there’s a much bigger picture.

If Hillary had won no way is trump charged with anything in my opinion. He keeps spewing his propaganda over twitter and becomes a hero to the entire Republican Party.

The republicans keep the house, get a filibuster proof majority in the senate, and worst off all, take over even more state governments just in time for redistricting. Putting a possible constitutional convention on the table.

Why?  It wouldn’t be up to Hillary and we know there was an investigation underway before the election.

I could see Trump pleading guilty to a lesser charge in exchange for cooperation but absent that I think they would have thrown the book at him.

Yeah, that's not completely true. It is my understanding that the Russian measures were targeted based on specific factors, as well as specific geographic regions. Further, I would suggest that there are certain demographic and socioeconomic factors that predispose somebody to being influenced by pictures of Jesus arm wresting Satan and coloring books of Bernie Sanders doing wrestling poses. There are certainly factors that differentiate individuals in terms of different types of media consumption. Conceptually, we should be able to segment the population by exposure as well as susceptibility to create to some control groups. The longitudinal polling data are there. A series of DID analyses could potentially resolve and differentiate the background trends related to the long-term Russian influence campaign and acute events such as Comey's misguided actions or the wiki releases of the DNC and clinton campaign emails.

Mueller's read out may or may not provide inputs necessary for such an analysis. What we can state based on what we know today is that the events that appear most directly responsible for tilting the election to Donald Trump were the actions of James Comey.

Because the prosecution of a losing presidential candidate would appear to be politically motivated, trump would not be as universally reviled as he is now, especially among independents, and he would be a hero to the entire former Republican Party including normal people as opposed to just the nutjobs who have now taken it over.

No “reasonable prosecutor” would take that on. Sound familiar?

Oh, and I would definitely want to consider the the subject of that indictment, i.e. the release of the DNC and campaign emails, in the analysis. As I stated...

Just based on looking at a few measures of public engagement with the various turd nuggets of 2016, I think that it would just confirm what Clinton herself has stated, Comey's actions are what cost her the election.

The mission of the FBI is to bring down criminals precisely like Donald Trump.

The Hillary Clinton case was a fucking joke.

I’m just quoting former FBI director James Comey himself.

“Although there is evidence of potential violations regarding the handling of classified information, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case," he said.

Its naive to think politics doesn’t play a role in decisions to prosecute. Which is why if Hillary had won trump wouldn’t have been prosecuted IMHO. I guess we’ll never know.

You've repeatedly claimed that Comey re-opening the Clinton investigation was because the Russians had fooled him with false intelligence. Yet you argue out the other side of your mouth that Russian interference had no role in the election and constantly tried to downplay it. You are a disingenuous piece of shit that doesn't care if the whole world burns as long as you can snipe from the sidelines. Fuck you.

I don’t think politics played a role in the Hillary case. I think they really didn’t have a compelling case worthy of filing charges. Comey was so insistent on that, he felt compelled to have a press conference explaining it to avoid the appearance of politics playing a role not to prosecute.

However, with Trump I think the question would have been, “What DON’T we charge him with?”  There’s just too much to chose from.

The feds bring down politicians, mob bosses, Hollywood players, and corporate tycoons all the time.

Trump would have been a golden goose to bring down.

Hillary’s emails? Not so much.

I never claimed that the Russians fooled him with false intelligence.  He knew it was fake news. Nonetheless he let the clearly fake intelligence plant influence his decision making.  Combined with Bill's tarmac trip with Lynch, Comey convinced himself that he needed to get out in front of the potential appearance of inappropriately influencing the outcome of the 2016 election by...wait for it...inappropriately influencing the outcome of the 2016 election. His actions had a direct and measurable impact on the polls, and in particular polls of undecided and select segments that viewed #bothsides unfavorably. If we want to talk about attacks at the heart of American democracy, I think we should start at the FBI for long litany of reasons.

Bullshit, I'm not scrolling through 261 pages of you downplaying Russian interference and attacking US Intel agencies to find it, but you absolutely posted that he was fooled among your many anti-Comey fake both sides screeds.

You are every bit as intellectually dishonest as TahoeHorn, you are just funnier and much smarter, so people have been far slower to recognize it.

Well OK I guess. Tell you what.  How about we find common ground and agree that "Among the Russian attempts to interfere and disrupt the 2016 US election, the most directly impactful influence operation involved planting a fabricated intelligence document at the FBI, which although the FBI knew to be fabricated, ultimately influenced the Director of the FBI to take a series of extraordinary, insubordinate, and unprecedented public actions. These actions, which went outside of the standard operating procedures for the FBI in such situations, had a direct and substantial impact on the public dialog in the days leading up to the US election, and likely resulted in tilting the election to Donald Trump."

The House just wrapped up their investigation of Her Emails and recommended a special prosecutor.

The Trump administration/DOJ will not be appointing any special prosecutors.  Trump/Whitaker/etc. have no interest in her being investigated.   They need a bogeyman, and wouldn’t risk her being exonerated.

Yeah, gonna have to disagree with this.  Trump would imprison Hillary if he could.

The DOJ isn’t naming a special prosecutor because there’s no reasonable justification for one.

The FBI has already investigated the shit out of Hillary.  The files are all still there.  Unless they’re just going to replicate the previous investigations, what crime are they even looking for?

I believe had there been no direct coordination with Russian actors, the Comey letter would have never been written, or produced on the eve of the election Oct. 28th.

The letter was a product of Clinton emails appearing on a laptop owned by Anthony Weiner and in the possession of FBI as evidence in a separate investigation.  How those emails found their way onto that laptop and the timing around their "discovery" and subsequent actions taken appear to have been highly coordinated and timed for maximum impact.

I remember landing at Louis Armstrong airport in NOLA that Friday 10/28/16 and turning on the rental car radio set to right wing talk and by the sound of it thought some kind of national emergency had occurred.  It was the buzz at the conference I attended.

And there's a fair chance it was a dirty op involving the now apprehended, extradited, and charged Russian hacker Yevgeny Nikulin coordinating with certain US persons.

My favorite part about Jerome Corsi is that any time an article mentions Jerome Corsi they show one of those ridiculous selfies he took on his computer camera in his study.

And he looks like he is an inch closer to death each time.

Interesting theory.

One could also make a flimsy case that Comey would never have done his mistake of a press conference closing the Hillary email investigation if the Russians weren’t ginning up all the anti-Hillary/FBI, Bill & Loretta on the tarmac shit.

Comey explained the coverage and perception of the inappropriate tarmac meeting was the pivotal event that lead him to the decision to break protocol with the press conference.

He didn’t want the American public, which was being bombarded with Russian bullshit at the time, given a perception that the investigation was closed due to improper influence.

The usual Russian voices were pushing this story very hard but so was all of right wing and MS media at the time, so who knows.

Zero hedge one week before Comey presser:
