Senate is not going to remove from office.  You needed definitive evidence of conspiring with Russia to get the GOP Senate to flip.  You need the brokerage, Trump funding Romanian hackers, Cohen coordinating with Prague shit for that.  But the House should still impeach. There is political value to getting GOP Senators on the record that wide spread obstruction of justice is acceptable. Doesn't matter the context of that obstruction. At this point, 2020 Senate races are in play.  That is the political calculus. What is the most damaging position that you can put Republican incumbents in. The most damaging political position is to make them deliberate removal from office and fail to act.

A clever gif would have been much more persuasive. Next time stick with that.

You misinterpreted what I was saying. The Senate will never vote to convict, ever.  That doesn’t mean starting the impeachment process is a win for Trump or the Republicans.  In fact, it’s possible it removes Trump via election loss or resignation without the Senate ever taking a vote.  It depends on how good the democrats make the case.  They don’t even have to vote to impeach in the House, they could create an unbearable environment for republicans where Trump resigning is the best option for the GOP or get annihilated in the 2020 election.

They have the tools to try to make this happen but I’m counting on them to fuck it up.

Of course, the right thing to do is to begin the impeachment process now because the facts demand it.

fair enough.

i still think party line gives them proper cover so the heat won't get too hot.

there's a really good chance that the right supported a criminal and conman all the way til the end and never ends up paying for it.

oh, and absolutely zero chance he resigns.  zero point zero.

Trump doesn’t strike me as someone that would fight to the death.

The only way I see Trump leaving is through resignation.  It’s the only way Pence can pardon him if he loses in 2020.

There is a nonzero chance that plenty of Republican senators are in deep with some of the same shady sources of funding that Trump has dealt with for years.  Forget "the party", they're trying to protect "their asses".

Agree. The R Senators def want to get re-elected, so staying behind Trump helps. But the spaghetti entanglements of the R Congressmen and the incriminating details have to be a big motivator. Friends of friends who know what you've done in the past.

It would not be surprising if some Rs have let Trump in on the family secrets about where the bodies are buried, and they know he will burn it (and them) to the ground if they betray him.

I can't see him resigning.  It opens him up to possible prosecution.

Nah, he’ll get a pass if he resigns.  Prosecuting a former president isn’t a great idea either.  Think about it.  How would the country react if Obama got perp walked under a Bill Barr DOJ?

You're mighty confident about things you can't possibly predict.

he won't resign, because that's what guilty people do, and he doesn't think he did anything wrong.

he'll never publicly acknowledge any crime, any wrongdoing, and he'll never apologize, even in shackles (obviously it'll never get to that).

I don’t know what will happen but there’s a precedent for an outlaw president.  And Trump is a huge pussy compared to Nixon.

Nixon was pardoned by Ford shortly after leaving office.  His malfeasance was all Federal.  Pence would not be able to pardon Trump for state or local crimes.

Again, we're in new territory.  Would Trump escape prosecution?  Possibly.  There have to be prosecutable crimes to start with.  Would the threat of prosecution keep him from resigning?  It's certainly possible.

It would be kinda awesome if this story ends with Trump fleeing to North Korea to build luxury beachfront hotels.

I'm still hoping for the midnight run to Russia on AF1 with the whole Trump klan, including SHS and all the rest. Never to return again.

Resign?  Lol.  Trump could go on a killing spree caught on film and he wouldn't resign and the Senate wouldn't remove him. Mueller would just sit on his hands saying the same shit too.

We are pretty much a dictatorship now. The Senate is like the one Maduro installed in Venezuela. It won't go against Trump for any reason whatsoever.  He could absolutely do anything he wants.

Sometimes you just need to go with the most obvious answer.  Trump is a narcissist who may be suffering from dementia, he probably doesn't even think he's done anything wrong, and his bootlicking minions sure are reinforcing that idea.  I would be absolutely shocked to see him resign.  It's just so far down the list of probable actions.  Hell, he knows he's not gonna get removed from office either by a Senate impeachment conviction or by 25A -- why in the hell would he resign?  It's just crazy talk.

How does he leave office?

Death? Peaceful transfer of power? Resignation? Or removed by the Senate?

Those are your options.

Could be death, could be on January 20, 202X, perhaps under escort by the Feds.  Those two are FAR FAR FAR more likely than resignation or conviction.

Prosecuting a former president for presidential crimes is one thing.  But Trump Org RICO, for example, would be something else.  NY DA likely has Donald, Eric, Jr, and Ivanka by the short hairs.  CFO Weisselberg got an immunity deal.  Cohen raid.  Pecker immunity.  It's just going to be too much to overcome.

I want an impeachment hearing so that when it gets to the senate all these assholes who are putting party over country have to go on record stating they support Trump and everything he’s done. Let the history books remember them as cowards.

Consolidated, impeachment hearings will focus all questions and answers in one place. The Ds can put together a list of established facts and misdeeds by Cheeto. They can repeat those over and over to the American people and impeach if they want.

Let's face it, all of this could have been avoided if Mueller and his team would have either given clear recommendations about future courses of action or gave more clarity if they wanted to pursue bringing charges but were told explicitly by the OLC (and not operating under their previous guidance) they couldn't.  Mueller's lack of clarity and vagueness are part of the issues and allows every side to infer, interpret, manipulate, etc his work.  In some ways, he's hiding behind the report for fear of politicizing his work, but for some reason he's letting everyone else define his report and his work.

Gutless is how I’d describe it

No. He’s staying president so he don’t get arrested and thrown into Rikers.

Anyone who believes that New York isn't going to go after him the minute he leaves office has no idea how much he is hated here. Dotard and his spawn are completely screwed here at least. Trump Org will cease to exist by the time the New York AG is done with it.

I don't think the Rs let him in on the secrets as much as Russia gave him the info (NRA, Kentucky aluminum plant, etc) and he's blackmailing them with all that stuff.  Hillary hasn't been the only one Putin's been spying on.

I'd like to see impeachment proceedings start by August, and then by this time next year the pretend POTUS will be so melted down they will have to invoke the 25th.  You know the first charges against Ivanka are going to ratchet up the crazies to redline levels.  That late into it the R's are screwed since they are all in on Trumptrain.

Also agree with sachick, I want those enabling fucks on record right before election.

Ah got it.

Normally trump could be bribed into just about anything, and frankly, that may be the ultimate end game here. Resign, go away, never come back, never tweet again, and you and your brood don’t ever have to set foot in Rikers.

Frankly I think its a good deal all the way around.

Yes, Bret.  What Mueller said about Trump was the opposite of what Bill Barr said.  What does that make Bill Barr ?

Bret, is this related to why Barr defied a subpoena to appear last week before House Judiciary ?

Let's make sure AG Barr returns to testify to HJC.

Very possible. I don't know if anyone will ever unravel all of the R illegality. I'm sure they hold things over each other's heads. If you bust me, then you're going down too.

Exactly. He couldn't even say "I take the Fifth" without going into some rambling monologue why he's doing that and burying himself in the process.
