Trump’s DOJ is totally out of control here! Going after the President’s son is 100% political, and shouldn’t ever be tolerated in this country.

Wait, what? This is the second time “Biden’s DOJ” has gotten a felony conviction against Hunter? Obviously just a deep state thing to make it look like they aren’t totally corrupt. I’ve had enough of these socialist fascists that love their communism so much. Free Trump! Also, lock her up.

^^ Some variance of that has been said somewhere in all seriousness.

I will bet you $100 that Joey jo-jo pardons Hunter.

Meh. Maybe. Highly doubt it. But does anyone seriously think Ivanka would’ve even been charged with, much less convicted of, a felony while Trump was in office? Now, Don Jr? If Trump gets reelected, he’ll definitely let them out Jr in prison for his role in getting couchfucker on the ticket

I was here when Incredulity's post read "I will bet any amount of money"...in case you were wondering how much he actually believes the words he types.

Lol.  Triggered much?

Excuse Me What GIF by Bounce

You're certain you know what that word means?

I don't want to bet. It's certainly possible that he's pardoned. A non-violent offender convicted of tax crimes and lying on gun paperwork...who happens to be the President's only remaining son...who, one could argue, has already given his pound of flesh to be the right wing's punching bag for 6 years...sure I can see it.

I just found it funny that you went from supreme confidence to betting a decent dinner out with the Mrs. so quickly.

Also, would it really bother you if he was pardoned? Or are just looking to point and yell "hypocrisy" about who the fuck knows at this point?

I'll take that bet. If you lose you have to give it to The Other Ones Foundation.

You said any amount, let @Longhorn_Fan68 set it at whatever he wants. You don’t need my blessing.

Put your money where your mouth is, and take every bet that’s proposed to you.

I said any amount initially, then edited within seconds to attempt minimize bullshit.

I’m open to a larger amount if he wants.

I requested your confirmation or denial so there is clarity on number of bets.  I offered to you first, so I will take this as a no.

I don’t make bets about nonsense with unserious people. You have my blessing to make bets with anyone willing to trust that you’ll pay up.

So the prosecutor wouldn’t accept his no contest plea so Hunter went ahead and just pleaded guilty to avoid a salacious trial.  I found this interesting:

”Lowell told Scarsi in court that a ruling barring Biden from bringing up past traumas as the reason for his drug abuse in his defense case “played into his decision about what is best for him.”Scarsi had ruled that such information had no relevance as to whether Biden committed the crimes he was accused of.”

But at the same time…

“The plea spares Biden from a public trial where prosecutors had over two dozen witnesses, some of whom were expected to offer embarrassing and salacious testimony about Biden’s drug use and spending. The money was spent “on drugs, escorts and girlfriends, luxury hotels and rental properties, exotic cars, clothing, and other items of a personal nature, in short, everything but his taxes,” the indictment said.”

So on one hand the judge rules Hunter can’t discuss his drug addiction as a defense cause it has no bearing on whether he committed tax evasion .  But at the same time the prosecutor can line up 2 dozen witnesses to discuss his drug use and sex addiction cause I guess that does have bearing on whether or not he committed tax evasion??

Joe should ABSOLUTELY pardon him, cause this is a sham.  At the same time he should pardon Don Jr. for being a dumb ass and pardon Eric for being a dipshit.

Did he pay the taxes he owed or not?

Well, under the American/English view of mental incapacity, commonly known as the M'Naghten Rule from some hoary old English case, diminished capacity is only a defense to a crime if it is shown to have destroyed the defendant's ability to differentiate right from wrong.  So, basically only the floridly schizophrenic or profoundly mentally disabled can defend that way.

So, legally, the judge is correct and Hunter's addictions have no bearing on whether he did or did not evade taxes.  Diminished capacity can come into play in sentencing, however.

On the other hand, the government is probably entitled to show his spending patterns to show why he wasn't paying his taxes and that he was knowing or intentional about it.

I really think we ought to develop some better jurisprudence on people with diminished capacity due to addiction and other disorders.  It may well be that it should stay in the sentencing rather than the guilt phase.

I suspect that Joe understands that Hunter needs to suffer the consequences of his actions.  That's the only way he'll get or stay sober.

I really rather doubt he'll be pardoned unless he receives a really draconian sentence.  But he won't because white guy.

If I were Joe, I’d pardon Hunter. If I don’t get to run for reelection, fine. Have it your way. But the way Trump pardoned all his criminal friends who where shitty, unrepentant dirtbags like Joe Arpaio, Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, and Mike Flynn, and the way he dangled the potential of a pardon to entice his minions to commit crimes on his behalf? Fuck that. You’re damn right I’d pardon my own son after the election. Hunter confessed his crimes. He paid what he owes. He doesn’t have the gun anymore. Let people bitch and moan all they want. If they’re Trump supporters then it’s just theater. Let ‘em choke on it.

This is 1000000x more likely than a 2 scoops pardon.  Sentencing will get drug out past election, new administration pardons. Everyone forgets 2 days later.

Disagree completely

It’s infinitely bigger political baggage for Harris than if Joe pardons at 11:59 last day.

sure there will be some screaming and yelling from right wing.  In a couple months the consensus will be pretty much everyone would pardon their son.

Peak politics 2024, a bunch of righties just can't comprehend that some politicians believe in the justice system and that people should face the repercussions when convicted of a crime, even if that person is your son and you have the power to make it go away. Their entire view of politics is exchanging favors for power and exercising those powers purely out of self interest. Their brains just can't see any other possibility.
