Funny you left this part out before. It was all about who his brother was. Your Robespierre is bleeding through

lmao give me a fucking break man. Why are you casting this light on brisket as if he's advocating for the execution of a traitor's brother? It is common knowledge that Charles Flynn was in the chain of command that failed on Jan 6 and contributed to the lack of federal response to an attack on the seat of our federal government.

Right or wrong, countless people have been denied security clearances for lesser offenses and associations. Losing a command isn't even in the same solar system as what happened during the Reign of Terror during the French revolution.

So it looks like the Republicans in this group are Richard Burr, Bill Cassidy, Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Jerry Moran, Lisa Murkowski, Rob Portman, Mitt, Mike Rounds, Thom Tillis, and Todd Young. Those last three guys I've barely heard of and know next to nothing about. The others all seem trustworthy enough I guess (for Republicans) on this except for Graham and Portman. I'll believe that they'll vote to hand Biden a win the moment they actually do and not a second before.

Portman is retiring.

Also funny enough, Graham keeps voting yes on most of Biden's judicial nominees too.  He's surprisingly open to things.

Straw man.  I have not once said that he should be booted out of the military or arrested.

I said that I would not support putting him in ANY position where he would have the opportunity to lead troops in an effort to overthrow our government.  It may be that sending him to the opposite coast for his next command was to provide some buffer against that exact possibility.  I don't know.

That's why I said "or whatever"

1 minute ago, Brisketexan said:

What I HAVE said is that I don't trust him.  And I don't.  And I think it would be foolish to do so, in light of his close connection to a fucking former general, sworn to uphold the constitution, who has OPENLY ADVOCATED FOR A VIOLENT OVERTHROW OF THE GOVERNMENT.....combined with his suspicious involvement in the affairs of January 6th, including the holdback of guard forces.

When it comes to people who might be in a position to overthrow my government, my loss of trust isn't predicated by fire, or even smoke....a mere whisp of smoke is enough, because the stakes are so high.

If you have some actual evidence that Charles Flynn has done something wrong, share it with JAG or whatever.   Stanley McChrystal, David Petraeus, and Michael Flynn all had much higher profiles than Charles Flynn, and the Army/DOD had no problems whatsoever forcing them out.

ETA I’m not implying you would go that extreme brisket, but we both know there will be plenty willing to do so

Me?  I don't have shit.  I just make decisions on who I trust.  I don't trust him.  I would sure as shit hope and expect that the Army/DOD has subjected him to all appropriate scrutiny, but they don't loop me in on that shit.  The bastards.

The line of reasoning of "I don't trust that guy?"  Fuck, there are LOTS of people I don't trust.  Thus far in my life, I haven't advocated for the execution of any of them (well, I mean, I've maybe crossed a line or two with my thoughts on Bob Stoops).

I also don't pretend that I live in a world where we did NOT have a violent insurrection, supported by a deposed leader, seeking to completely destroy the Republic, and supported -- in plain English -- by a former general of our armed forces.  Those things all happened, and are true.  In that world, yeah, I'm fucking suspicious as hell of plenty of people.  That's what sane people do when people openly declare "hey, I'm an enemy of what you hold dear, and I intend to destroy it, violently!"  I'm not guessing.  They said so.  They actually tried to DO so.

Burr - retiring
Cassidy - likely in his last term (voted for impeachment and the Jan 6 commission)
Collins - just won re-election
Graham - just won re-election
Moran - up for re-election in 2022
Murkowski - up for re-election in 2022 (but ranked choice voting in Alaska, so she can burnish her credentials with Dems and indies)
Portman - retiring
Romney - likely in his last term (voted for impeachment and Jan 6 commission)
Rounds - just won re-election
Tillis - just won re-election
Young - up for re-election in 2022

The only 2 on there who are a surprise are Moran and Young, being up in 2022.   No one on there has presidential ambitions either.  I also think Manchin is going to try to get Capito on board too.   I guess for Moran and Young and Rounds, they want to take the credit for that rural broadband in their states.

But you brought a family member in because they are a family member. You could have used Flynn as an example because he was present when the decisions were being made on how to deal with the insurrection. But you went with who his brother was. That’s dangerous thinking

Both were and are factors in my thinking, and have been since the facts of Jan 6th came out.  Mea culpa for not stating both in my original post.  Who his brother is is not the SOLE factor in my lack of trust.  But make no mistake, it's a goddamned big one, because I know that the human default is loyalty to one's family.  The fact that he was actually entangled in the bullshit of the lack of response to a violent attack on the Capitol?  That's, ummm, also rather troubling.  And layered onto his familial relationship, sets off those alarm bells even more loudly.

History is littered with the corpses of people who placed a little too much trust in the wrong hands. Nothing wrong with some healthy side-eyeballs when the Confederate flag is being traipsed around the Rotunda.

The major players in this (and there were definitely people higher up than zip tie guy) have yet to be held accountable. They most likely won't be due to the current administration's desire to move forward with legislation and appointments and the obstruction by those same players. Mistake. The seditionists have been poking at the dam looking for weaknesses and they'll be back with a bigger and better plan. But that's for the other thread so I'll stop and bow out.

There are only 48 democrats in the Senate (with 2 DINOS). What is Biden gonna do? Hold his breathe until he gets what he wants?

Regarding infrastructure, the GOP made some lucid points that it covered more than just bridges and roads (not that I agree).

Lets get on the same page here, wake up and realize there’s only one party anymore. Our democracy is under siege and being hypercritical over the existing party is counterproductive.
Infrastructure IS more than bridges and roads. The GQP is fucking wrong on this.

Which is why Pelosi, Schumer, Biden, Manchin and Sinema are 100% for a bipartisan physical infrastructure bill, because they know the GQP won't come to the table on human infrastructure (climate change, adding dental and vision to Medicare*, making the CTC permanent*, elderly care*, etc.) so they can tackle that themselves.

The GQP is planning to use that part to say the Dems are just wasting tax dollars on liberal pipe dreams.  And touting their bipartisan physical infrastructure bill back home. "Glad you love your rural broadband that I passed but what about the NANCY PELOSI SOCIALIST DENTAL INSURANCE?!?!?!?!"

*Knowing full well if these things pass, they won't ever repeal them, because the GQP does not have the balls to touch these programs that benefit their base

Do you know why David Petraeus was forced out of the CIA after leaving the Army and being on the job for a year?  Because he was caught banging the woman who was writing his biography.

Do you know how Petraeus was caught?  The FBI was conducting an unrelated security check/investigation.

Stanley McChrystal was forced out because he spoke a little too freely to Rolling Stone magazine (and ironically he was replaced by Petraeus).  Flynn was forced out for saying the wrong things  as well, and being a shitty leader at the DIA.

But we are supposed to think that the Army is going to leave somebody in who is plotting a coup with his disgraced brother?

Charles Flynn has a 36-year track record with the military, and looking at his background, he's probably been as closely scrutinized by the FBI, etc. as Petraeus and others.  And I would bet money that at some point in the last 5 years, somebody has thoroughly looked at communications with this brother.

If you are going to freely mock those who think Joe Biden is disqualified as Prez because he's covering for Hunter, then you should feel free to be mocked in return.

I very, very, very much hope that my mistrust is misplaced, and that the scrutiny of Charles Flynn has been as significant as one would expect, and has not been evaded/fooled.

But come the fuck on -- coups succeed because they have help, often military, from the inside.  One of our generals is the brother of a former general who has openly called for violent overthrow of our government (seriously, read that again - that is actually a true thing that happened. It's fucking insane.), and was involved in a concerning pattern of inaction in reacting to an actual attempt to overthrown the government.

Just look at that fact pattern, pretending you don't know the actual persons involved, and if you maintain "nope, hunky-dory, no reason to have any concern at all".....well, either I don't believe you, or I worry about your judgment.

Yes but again, if the DOD under Biden, headed by Gen. Austin, hasn’t found sufficient reason to believe Flynn shares those same beliefs as his brother, I don’t see why you’re so obsessed with it in this moment.   Esp. when the DOD has made their intent to root out those kind of beliefs well known.

The FBI is not going to dig up something on Charles Flynn and then sit on it.  They are just not - Petraeus was basically a rock star of sorts, and they had no problem revealing that he was banging a writer.

Democrats in the Senate had no problem confirming his 4th star last year, and Biden, Austin, and the other civilian leadership of the DOD have no problem with him taking over US Army Pacific (the Pacific/Asia seemed to be his speciality based on his recent commands, including the 25th Infantry) earlier this month.

And if anything, Charles probably loathes his brother, because while Charles did nothing wrong, Charles has probably now hit his ceiling thanks to Michael, and US Army Pacific will be his last command.  There is no way he will ever get a shot at the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  It's already very competitive as it is and every mention of Charles Flynn in the major military news media, whether it's Stars & Stripes or Military.com or whatever, tosses in who his brother is.  The Army has around 15 or so 4-stars, with a bunch of 3-stars, and so it would be very easy for them to just gloss over Charles Flynn when General Milley retires.  And if Charles' 4-star confirmation had happened in February of 2021 instead of late 2020, it's not a sure bet he would get that 4th star.

Maybe he could become head of the NOAA Commissioned Officer Corps.

Add this to ARP, bipartisan physical infrastructure, bipartisan endless frontier, Dem-only infrastructure, and maybe something with healthcare for the FY2023 reconciliation (Dems should use it before midterms just in case) and damn what a first couple years for Joe?

Milley's senior college thesis was 185-page-long paper titled "A Critical Analysis of Revolutionary Guerrilla Organization in Theory and Practice" and he was a Green Beret, and a huge part of being a Green Beret is understanding other people and their point-of-view, and understanding various ideologies.

I don't know this to be true, but I'd be shocked if the vast majority of Generals don't have advanced degrees, and most probably have PhD's.  I believe Milley has a couple of masters.  Gaetz is a run of the mill law school grad.

I certainly would like for all citizens to be well read and especially those elected to public office but I’ve come to the realization that view is apparently perceived as swampy and elitist and if one has comms people, reading isn’t as important as being photogenic and assholey.

Yeah, looking that way.   Moran is now also wavering unless Manchin and Sinema oppose reconciliation.  Biden is handing them an easy layup (physical infrastructure is yugely popular) and they are throwing the ball into the lake instead and going to go home, and then let the Dems pass it by themselves in reconciliation.

Again, Biden has been insistent on the two-track plan for 6 weeks.  This is not the first time they are hearing about it.

Now the whole thing can be paid for with repealing the Trump tax cuts.  Fucking morons, they are.

It's crazy?! I mean crumbling infrastructure, rural internet access, etc followed by things that improve lives of the public and they do exactly what they've been doing:

"Weel, you see nooooow," after acting like a few were approachable while they get together with the strategists and see how to frame it. They do this consistently. I don't suppose it's possible for the Democratic/WH to act w/o warning to upend the apple cart, but they certainly need to plan some pre-publicity in a much more forthright manner. I've listened to many many of the press briefs, talks, etc now and the WH certainly repeat their talking points clearly, but they are very staid and factual. Don't get me wrong--I love plain talk like that and facts are nonnegotiable, but once again, they need those Alabama Democrats (their campaign feed on twitter) to help them navigate the more shark infested waters. Let Biden do his thing and get the attack dogs out there after Lindsey et al.
