Which do you want to be, an idiot or a Troll?  The bombing in Syria was in retaliation to an attack on US and coalition forces a week or so ago.  It was proportionate and not like he went and blew up Damascus.  It’s probably just a way to get Iran to the negotiation table to discuss the nuclear deal again.  Not saying I am for bombing other countries but it seems like this was in direct response to an attack.  As for the $15 minimum wage, Biden is the one pushing for that and the Republicans are refusing to pass any Covid relief legislation with that in it so they are being forced to remove it.  I am sure if Bernie was now President all of your magical rainbows and unicorns would have already occurred, right?

Not sure where to put this, but CNN reporting that Capitol Police say "militias" are threatening to blow up the Capitol during the State of the Union.  So that's fine.

We live in a country with a terrorist movement that is supported by half of the government.  That is not sustainable.

Does anyone else think of the tv series Designated Survivor when they read this? Scary stuff.

They can overrule the Senate parliamentarian. They won't because they don't care.

Well if he doesn't think it will happen then I guess we shouldn't even try!

#Democrats

To be fair, I think it's more the fault of more moderate democrats, like the Manchin and that subset of his ilk, who are balking on voting to overrule, right? At least I thought I read that.

I think a lot of people forgot that human beings and leaders aren't perfect and there is no happy path policy or decisions without any warts and of course Biden was not going to go through a presidency without upsetting some folks who allied with him or make some mistakes-- I think we got so consumed with Trump that we forgot the President, in a lot of ways at times, is in a no-win situation.

Time to find a body double for Biden.  Or use a a hologram.  Or shit, there's really no need to do a live SOTU with a full Congress, it's largely ceremonial.  Let him address the country from the oval office.

Just gonna be pedantic for a moment -

This won't be a State of the Union.  This is an Address to a Joint Session of Congress.

Presidents do not give a State of the Union speech their first year in office.

It can't go through reconciliation if it does not pass the Byrd Rule.

Why is this so fucking hard to understand for you?   The COVID relief is the #1 most important thing in the moment.

Democrats have a couple options:

  • Say fuck it, keep the $15 minimum wage in there and then Manchin/Sinema kill it.  Everyone fucking loses except Republicans, who don't want shit for anyone.
  • Have Harris overrule the Parliamentarian, which is about as likely to happen as Brisket finally landing Sela Ward.  Biden doesn't want this and Manchin said he won't vote for overruling the Parliamentarian.
  • Re-configure the minimum wage increase to pair tax penalties on corporations who don't pay the higher wage (Bernie is looking at this)
  • Lower it from $15 to something like $11 or $12 to see if Manchin and Sinema are happier with this
  • Try to pass a stand-alone minimum wage increase bill to $11 or $12 that would get 10 GOP votes

But here come our resident "WHY NOT DONE?" folks who don't understand how perilous this process is.  We only have 50 votes.  We have a diverse caucus that is not wholly united in policy.

Then make Manchin and Sinema walk out onto the floor of the Senate and vote against it. Then you go to WV and Arizona and say, "Hey voters, why does they not want you to make more money? That's weird, right?"

It's the bully pulpit, and Biden won't use it, which is why he is garbage. (One of the many reasons.)

He doesn't actually care if the minimum wage rises. He doesn't care if we get universal healthcare. These are not priorities he has, because if they were priorities he would use the powers of his office to make them happen.

He is a loser and the Democrats are losers. What the libs are left with at this point is explaining why Biden's cages are GOOD, ACTUALLY and why it's OK to bomb Syria in retaliation this time. It's sickening.

We knew ahead of time exactly what was going to happen but were told by the liberals to shut up and wait until the election to criticize, but as I said incessantly at the time, "You will never accept criticism of the Democrats" and that is 100% bearing out to be true.

I’m somewhere between these. Democrats have razor thin majorities with Senators from places like WV, GA, and AZ. Hard needle to thread. I don’t think Biden really cares about the $15 minimum wage though and for Democrats to be defending the Syria thing after getting worked up about similar moves from Trump, and of course Obama’s strike record, is just blatant partisanship.

I haven’t caught myself up on all the info on the strike so I’m reading judgment for now, but sounds like business as usual, for #bothsides.

Sounds like they have options but are refusing to go down that route of leaning on two Dem senators and calling their bluff. Biden already said he would not have Harris overrule the parliamentarian even before Manchin/Sinema went on the record. So a feckless position was already in the works.

If you want Dems to maintain control for a full 4 years, I suggest you wake up and read the room - people didn't vote in mass in the middle of a pandemic and scorched earth voter suppression to have the Dems throw their hands up in the air over a rule that .0007% of the population is aware of. Good luck selling that in '22.

JS1 said it,

"We have a diverse caucus that is not wholly united in policy."

West Virginia cannot afford a $15/hr minimum wage. The small businesses in those communities would be disproportionately hit and ultimately the consumers and people would have less job opportunities, less options/choices/convenience, and a lesser quality of life. That's Manchin's take, at least, and I'm not sure that me, a Texan who wipes my rear end with $15 every 15 minutes (gastro issues, don't judge), am in the best position to challenge him on that.

The point is that $15/hour is relative to where you live, the cost of living, the pricing index, etc. and for a small number of Democratic states its not in the best interest of the constituents. The glass half full take is: Hey, at least we have a few of those on the Dem side of the aisles because these crappy areas are usually rural/red/maga territories. The glass half empty is: Who cares about these people and it's about the greater good of the majority of the Dem party/caucus and then you push those folks into GOP's waiting arms when they say "the elite Dem's shut down your Dollar General's with their $15/hour uppity Seattle wages-- we will bring it back down and you can open more pawn shops and urgent cares in your food deserts!"

Trump was more effective at whipping his party in line via mean tweets than whatever Biden is doing now.

They couldn't even overturn the evil socialist Obamacare with a majority.  I guess that's effective?

They passed the tax cuts.  They would have passed that under any GOP president, it wasn't Trump's effective politicking that got that passed.

And we need these 5 votes for infrastructure.  But hey, let's piss off 2 of them now and then nothing will get done!

I swear, there's a whole segment of the "very online" people from the left who would seemingly be happier with Joe Manchin switching parties and having Senate Majority Leader McConnell again.

Fair. So what do you do? This is what I meant when I said "No-win situation" for ole Joey B.

The only way he loses is if he doesn't get something done. Overrule and negotiate w/ the two senators on a lower amount or longer phase-in period. I am not against an incremental approach. I'm against them doing nothing, which will lead to more disaffected voters, and the terrorists getting back in charge in 2 years.

That's not how this works. Manchin has huge incentive to get infrastructure done. I expect him to be one of the most vocal supporters of that bill.

Wait, are we melting down that we haven't passed a minimum wage increase less than one month after Biden's inauguration?

It’s more that Biden doesn’t give a fuck and time is actually a factor here. I want Biden to succeed as much as anyone too. The minimum wage issue is just one area of negligence. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out he’s okay with Republicans obstructing everything again. He’s not going to advocate to abolish the filibuster, he’s not going to expand the courts, he’s not going to get the voting rights act passed in time, we’re not getting a Green New Deal, we’re not getting $2,000 checks, we’re not getting student loan debt canceled, he’s not going to repeal the Trump tax cuts. Our healthcare system will remain broken.  The consequences of this are easily predictable.

ahhh...this thread is so gotdamn refreshing, b_t et. al. trashing policy and congressional strategy of the Democratic president. online tantrums over perceived priority slights. i love it.

pointing out why it's such an improvement over the dystopian, comic book caricature and clown show catalog of the previous four presidential threads seems unnecessary 😎

go forth and argue the merits, my dudes! 🤘

Jesus can y’all stop quoting bad teammate he’s such a whiny bitch. We get it, Bernie didn’t get the nomination, I wanted him too.  Blaming Biden for shit like the parliamentarian saying it’s a no go to the $15 at the moment is beyond comical.  Trying to ram it through at the expense of having the whole package fail gives the gop a win. Get the Covid Bill done and then get the vaccinations done.  Then you bring in the $15/hr increase done.

this is chess not checkers you fucking crybaby.  Let the guy be in office more than 5 fucking weeks before deeming him a failure.

This is an overreaction. I've give Biden a bit longer than time it takes to get an appointment with a doctor before declaring his entire tenure a failure. I know it's your money and you want it now, but give it a hot second.

No he hasn't been. Plenty of people have provided @bad_teammate strong challenges to his opinions over the last four years. We agree with him on some things, disagree on others. This isn't anything new. Stop playing the victim.

I don't know that he was one yet. He just found out the most recently explored method will not work. I'm also not entirely convinced that broadcasting such a plan to get votes would be a sound strategy. I'm pretty sure we didn't give the Germans our plans for D-Day. But, I agree that it would be good of him to reinforce that it is still a goal for his administration.

The COVID unemployment benefits from the last bill run out March 14. Can’t delay this bill any longer or there’s going to be a lapse for people - gonna have to figure out minimum wage increase a different way.
