Joe Biden 2021

Very smart to give Capito this publicity as the main negotiator for your bill - she's also from WV, she's very close to Manchin and WV benefits the most out of every state from new infrastructure (see: every bridge and road named after Byrd).

If Capito fucks it up,  Manchin will be pissed - at her, not Biden, because all he cares about is bringing money and jobs back to WV.  And Capito torpedoing it because her party doesn't want to give Biden anything says a lot to Manchin.

I think that we'd be way better off without the efforts of the professional race agitators.  This country is far more just and nowhere near where it was 100 years ago.  The Tulsa riot was a tragedy, but it has almost nothing to do with where we are today in terms of race relations.  Some folks seem to want to play that angle for political gain.

Who, specifically, are these “professional” race agitators, and what is in their job description?

Where does the phrase “professional race agitators” even come from, and what does that mean to you?

you aren't on George Soros' payroll to be a race agitator?

I hate waiting! It's been 4.5 months, why hasn't this fucking dude destroyed America yet?!?!?!!?

Well, from watching the hedge funds get absolutely railed over their shorts by the neckbeards on r/wsb, it looks like some Wall Street Titans might have taken Trump's prediction a bit too seriously

Because he can't get the votes from his own party and hasn't resorted to abolishing the filibuster yet?

There are plenty of reports out there that call your post into question. From home evaluations to mortgage application acceptance rates. I’d link them, but the onus, I believe, is on you to provide facts that back your claim.

I will accept that’s the way you want things to be. I’d like to think most everyone wants that. I’m open to seeing what makes you think it’s true.

I mean, it is affirmatively better now than it was 100 years ago.  There can hardly be a question of that.

But that's going from really shitty to only kinda shitty or a little shitty.

JS1 posed the question which was essentially "why hasn't Biden done anything negative yet like people who opposed him predicted?"

My point was that he's been more or less handcuffed from passing anything too detrimental due to either public influence or a lack of support in his own party. I think he'll eventually abolish the filibuster and get there, but if you tell me that he will be a good, decorum rich President and the rest of his tenure will look like the last 4.5 months-- I think everyone who is waiting for 2024 will call that a win (considering what changes could be enacted).

Which potential changes do you take issue with specifically?

Personally, I don't think that Biden would do much to impact the quality of my life, unlike a Bernie-type. Again, without getting bogged down into the specifics of my personal political positions as they relate to where Biden stands which I don't think anyone here wants (if I wrong, I am happy to oblige I guess this afternoon when I get some time), I was simply answering the question as to why nothing drastically different or negative has befallen.

Further, I answered it because I found it interesting and funny that the question was posed almost as if Biden has championed and gotten through a ton of policy when, to my knowledge and I could be wrong, he's really only passed some stimulus for Covid-19 a couple of months ago. Everything else has either been stalled, getting re-worked/whittled down, or proposed lacking the red meat that Democrats really wanted (e.g. student loan forgiveness).

Why do you think all that is? Is it not because of a) his own party and b) the existence of the filibuster? Because that was my point. He's been leashed (but even unleashed I'm not sure what is real heart for dramatic change would be; he might love that he's hampered because it provides a great excuse for inaction).

Edit to add: I didn't mention it because it seems obvious that expecting/hoping for the other side of the aisle to get on board and vote for things they are in conflict with in a bipartisan way is the epitome of political foolishness. Just wanted to make sure we are all singing from the same sheet of music there.

I think we would like a listing of what items you think Biden wants to accomplish that would be detrimental. Seems like a good on topic discussion.

1) Green New Deal Support

2) Raise Minimum Wage

3) Raise my taxes as a high income earner

4) Free Tuition / Student Loan Forgiveness

5) Raise corporate taxes to pay for inefficient stuff

About the only things I want him to do are:

1) moderate gun reform

2) legalize marijuana

That said, I love how the conversation moved from the actual topic of why Biden can't get anything done to "but what about YOU!?". I guess it was a gotcha after all. Sorry JS1

You mean like the trillion dollar Covid relief package he signed like a whole 2 months ago?

You post some dumb shit which lately I’ve ignored but this one is too much.

yea he got that rammed through with his one silver bullet of reconciliation not needing the votes. He can't go back to the well too many times with that one, right?

Were you around when this was discussed or no?

Now that Democrats have passed President Biden's $1.9 trillion COVID relief bill, all eyes turn to what's next.

But what that is isn't exactly clear.

"I would expect the president's agenda, moving forward, will reflect the Build Back Better agenda that he talked about on the campaign trail," White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Thursday. "But the order, the size, the timeline has not yet been determined."

In other words, no one quite knows yet.

There are indications that infrastructure could be the next big push, but there's also voting rights, the minimum wage (which was nixed from the COVID-19 relief bill and is important to progressives) and immigration.

And none of it will be easy to pass — and may not pass at all.

The biggest wildcard to me is also the most important. Voting rights. I have no idea what is gonna happen with that one but it will be the biggest most important fight this country has seen since the civil war given the republicans have clearly become fascists who want to destroy democracy so they can seize control of the country and impose apartheid.

Personally, it's this kind of statement that grinds my gears.

I will likely not benefit materially by much of what Biden does, either, but it's not about me.  It's about minorities, women, LGBTQ, and my kids.  It's about Mother Earth.  It's about all kinds of things, but my own personal needs are few.  I'm about as set as I can get, or at least as I need to be.

Americans are a selfish bunch.

America is a community.  Except when it comes to people not named us benefitting from legislation, then FUCK YOU ITS NOT WORTH IT.  Unless it's tax cuts for the rich.  We all benefit from that, somehow.  Despite all the evidence.

Being the general manager of a McDonald’s does not make you a “high income earner.”

1) Green New Deal Support   Yeah, climate change is bad.  Transitioning our workforce into a new type of work (renewable energy) so they have the skills needed in a new economy - no way, let's just make promises to coal miners that their jobs will be there FOREVER

2) Raise Minimum Wage  Yeah, people being able to earn a living wage and not rely on government assistance, how awful.

3) Raise my taxes as a high income earner  Pay your fair share

4) Free Tuition / Student Loan Forgiveness  An educated populace and then putting more money into people's pockets to have the kind of take home pay/wealth to be able to buy things, buy homes, etc. - HOW AWFUL

5) Raise corporate taxes to pay for inefficient stuff  Repairing roads and bridges that haven't been properly maintenance in decades is inefficient.  More bridges should fall down.  Paying for things like commuter rail and public transportation to get cars off the road (see #1) - oh dreadful

About the only things I want him to do are:

1) moderate gun reform

2) legalize marijuana

Yeah, okay.

That wasn't the original question. The original question is why hasn't Biden "destroyed America yet," referring to all the horrible things predicted about Biden's presidency (e.g., installing communism, getting rid of property, etc.). The answer to that question is easy: Biden was never going to destroy America. Those were just stupid talking points, i.e., bullshit. Biden has made moves and will continue to make moves that those on the right do not like. For the most part, I believe those moves will be good for America.

But, that is why I suggested it would be good for you to identify the things that you think would actually be bad. My bet: (1) most of them aren't things Biden actually wants to do or are misunderstood exaggerations of his goals, (2) are things that would actually be beneficial and in many ways consistent with a more traditional conservative mindset (e.g., free market principles as opposed to the crazy nonsense espoused now), and (3) some portion are things we may agree are detrimental in some substantial way, but may serve some larger goal.

I do see you posted some things, and I'll probably have comments on them later. I think this conversation is much more interesting than the original question.

It's utterly predictable, but my Trumpy peers back home are all claiming that this is happening.  We are now a socialist nation, inflation is sky high, the border is being overrun, the government will have confiscated all guns by the end of the year, etc.  I mean, it's truly awesome to see -- literally none of it is true, but right wing media TELLS them it's true so they believe it, despite no supporting evidence.

And this is where I diverge from those masses I guess, because I feel like outside of the COVID stimulus bill, which would have been passed in some flavor or another no matter who was President, Biden has largely done not much materially at all to affect the nation, one way or another. If his presidency serves as great optics for stabilization and he talks a good talk (to Democrats and/or Progressives) but largely does nothing because he a) doesn't have the support and/or b) doesn't want to break glass to get things done (e.g. abolish filibuster, take hard stands against Manchin, calling folks out, taking unilateral actions, etc.) then I think that's awesome.

Biden as a stabilizing, seat-warmer for 2024 is the best case scenario for me and my ilk and I'm here for it.

I don't have a favorite personality or person, but more of a persona.  From the probable choices, maybe it looks like:

1) Ron DeSantis

2) Rand Paul

3) Andrew Yang

4) Nikki Haley

5) Joe Biden

6) The Rock

7) Kanye West

8. Caitlyn Jenner

In that order?
