I sold all of my long term holdings a little over a month ago and have been quite happy with holding that plus its proft in a money market earning interest and not losing 15-20% of its value. Decided to stay on Mr. Bones' Wild Ride with the other chunk of our holdings though.

Miraculously ahead in all of my positions - most were bought back in 2013 so most are over several hundred %. Even for those purchased last year (except for ABBV) are ahead. I got lucky and won't see because the tax would not be worth it.

For now.

Well at least the 6 figs I have sitting in a passbook savings account is safe for now.

How much can I get for selling blood plasma?

Glad I kept my parent's $ in CDs. At the time I thought a 18-month 4.25% was crap, but dodged a bullet.

The answer is no. I realized I veered heavily cloak in my post, but you are not really addressing my point; you're looking for reasoning and a plan behind a group/person who has shown time and time again that they don't think multiple steps ahead. The opposition also is gutless losers for a number of reasons. None of this has anything to do with our nation's direction (as directly related to the concept of The Plan Behind Tariffs).

I'm also trying to protect my ability to retire. I sold all of my stake in a defense aeronautics fund today and put it in Berkshire Hathaway, because I don't think American defense companies are going to do as well as they have as the world recoils from us. But your last sentence is important, and illustrative of the point I'm trying to make; You want to protect things, and you need a plan or concept you can plan around. Minimize damage. Protect yourself. I'm suggesting that by pretending to conjure up a plan from the ether, which may or may not be work, you're putting yourself at further risk. If you think you divine the plan is they juke left, and go that way, and they juke right, you're left off even worse than you were if you'd done nothing.

Historically, the market is the market and over time everyone wins. If you still believe that, then doing nothing, long term (no idea of your personal timeline here), might be the winning play, so to speak. Personally, I'm looking at Gold, and investing in foreign defense companies that can produce to the NATO standard, and probably some Hong Kong index funds because I think these moves long term favor China.

I don't see us abandoning power and influence, we're exerting it. China is a bit of a black box, but from all I've seen their economy is currently weak. These tariffs should stress the Chinese as they to subsidize their economy pretty heavily.

As to US markets, selling is dumb. If they can withstand the global economy being completely turned off and then back on then they can handle this. If liquidity is eventually needed, it will be provided.

Some power/influence arises purely from military might. I don't dispute that our military isnt going away overnight. But the more valuable type of power/influence is what arises from having other countries trust that the US will do the right thing. Partnerships are a two way street, and we're proving to the world we will fuck over each and every country who doesn't massage trumps anus.

The type of influence that comes from being a trusted partner is gone. The president of the US is proudly retweeting (or re-truthing whatever the fuck you call his site) videos bragging that he is crashing global markets ON PURPOSE, just so that we can refinance our own debt. Its a stupid fucking plan to begin with, but you sure as fuck shouldn't be bragging about it. And thats not even mentioning the stupidity of threatening to take over our own allies (Canada & Greenland/Denmark). Its fucking lunacy. If you think our power and influence are actually growing right now, you must be pumped so full of Trump's jizz that its penetrating your brain tissue.

Wait.....are you Laura Loomer?

I think there needs to be a thread in Cloak Room on the politics of the economy. This thread has lost its way.

Why don't you share your portfolio moves and suggestion Tony?  Or you don't have a 401K?

Please give us your market insight.  And we can make fun of you for that!  Plus then you don't have to go all snowflake on market moves that are so clearly only politically based?

PS - thank you Tony. You and yours have made me so much money the last two days I feel guilty about it.  You see, you can't pretend fake shit is real in the market, and I am feasting like a mofo on folks that are offended by political reality.

I didn’t say anything about power growing. Just said we’re using it, not abandoning it.

back on topic. Monday should be interesting. Vix at 45 makes me think we’re close to near term bottom if not already there.

So no market or 401K suggestions? Musings maybe? I would love to hear what you would put money into right now?

And I apologize in advance if asking you what you think are good stocks to bet on, or bet against in a post about the market,  is somehow offensive.  And... Bless your heart!

It is pretty funny how the DOW has tanked historically for the last two days solely because of the capricious and dumb as fuck tariff actions of Donald J Trump, and people are getting mad because Trump is being mentioned.

Go to texags if you want a reach around while watching a massive failure

It’s hilarious you MFers get tired of yelling at each other in CR and come over here to find someone who hasn’t heard your rant before. It’s like you ladies have your hen house gatherings and then come home to continue ranting to the men. You want everyone to be as miserable as you are.

Please illustrate how the economy, as it stands currently, are not an explicit results of political choice. You’ve already refused to offer your own stock market and purchasing decisions/advice for others. So what the fuck are you doing here?

“I’ll never go to the CR because everyone is mean and I can’t defend my own thoughts or actions” is how this reads. Ok, snowflake.

I'm not going to pretend that I understand much about the stock market. But, it's fairly obvious to even the least sophisticated investor that this market downturn is due to one man. Whether or not his allies or sycophants want to admit it or not is immaterial. The markets, including things like ag are seeing unusual activity. I think that's a safe way to describe it in apolitical terms. I read along and generally lurk because I don't have a lot to contribute and I would rather try to learn something than holler about the state of my accounts.

I can go holler in CR and argue about whatever I think is happening and what might be next, but that's not why I read this thread. But, in this continuing series of events it's unavoidable that political points will arise because that's what is driving it. The Chinese slapping a 34% tariff, the Canadians pulling whiskey off the shelves, and the markets responding to these things can be laid at the feet of a single individual. The last time we saw a Fear and Greed index number of 4 was right after the pandemic began to really sink into the brains of people on about 3/16/20. It was actually a 2 but a fucking 4 is pretty close. The market has been in Extreme Fear territory for a while. It bobbed up to plain old fear of 20 something a few days ago but it's been consistently in the extreme for most of the last month or so and the selloff reflects that.

I don't see it changing any time soon. I probably should go snap up some Ford at sub ten dollars but I just can't. Ethereum at sub 2k? I would have been getting some of that too. Not now. It can sit in the bank and draw pennies for all I care right now.

If I want to gloat about idiots losing their shit buying OAN or DJT  I know where to go drink from that fountain of tears.

But, crying CR when it's been an entirely political decision to make the market behave this way is avoiding the topic.

I'll hang up and listen.

The bad news is Trump would rather see the Dow shed another 2, 4, 5 or 10,000 points... rather than admit he made a mistake.  And that is what is truly terrifying to me.

And this type of discussion:

On 4/4/2025 at 8:21 PM, Nice Guy Eddie said:

we all want to think that Trump will agree to eliminate these new tariffs if these other countries eliminate tariffs on the US. But that isn’t what Trump wants. He even says so. He believes that all US purchased items should be made here. Every iPhone, every car, every clothing item, every scrap of food. Americans will pay more but they will earn that much more too. Big, beautiful tomorrow.

Either we have a stock market much lower than today to accomplish that vision, or we face a standoff of a deep recession looking for trumps’ admin to finish off his remaining years. We’re 2.5 months in.

Then I'll just stay away and you can have another CR thread. The truth is, people can discuss the market action and their reaction without simultaneously slinging mud about either party, or the Jews, other posters or whoever else you fucksticks like to argue about. It's not productive to the intended conversation and some of us prefer to not get sucked in.

Someone can say, "I think Trump is making a mistake", and someone can counter with, "I believe his plan may have a chance" without getting childish and irrational with the discussion. I know it's possible because that's the people I choose to spend my time with. Why? Because it's actually productive conversation, due to the ability to share different perspectives and learn from one another, without name calling or accusations of being a Russian or Chinese spy.

The market is going down. It will keep going down until things change. But tariffs will be announced and dropped a bunch of times over the next 4 years. Unless you have insight into these completely random decisions will happen, I don't see a predictable way to invest that isn't straight gambling. But maybe a volatility play makes the most sense.

Can't believe everything you read on the interwebs, but I read 80% of the stock market is owned by approximately 12% of the people. These wealthy people work together to keep their ATM machine running but they are also in competition with one another. It will drop until the game of chicken (who's going to start buying heavy first) ends. As fast as the market is dropping, it could result in an equally fast rise, depending on a number of factors.

I like this depiction of the market cycle:
