In the name of “curriculum transparency,” Florida’s Republican-controlled state government has appointed several anti-gay and anti-mask conspiracy theorists to take charge of a new effort at public schools: banning books.

This hastily assembled censorship council—tasked with retraining public school librarians to abide by new restrictions—is the latest ploy in Gov. Ron DeSantis’ crusade to upend the state’s education system.

But the council was also staffed under suspicious circumstances, with the state Education Department ignoring its own call for official candidates from local school districts and instead filling most of the slots with right-wing activists who have a history of proposing book bans. One was even nominated by a religious activist with close ties to the DeSantis administration a week before the department publicly called for candidates, according to government emails, hinting at secret coordination between them.

“It calls into question the process that the Florida State Board of Education is trying to implement. It raises significant transparency questions,” said Megan Uzzell at Democracy Forward, which obtained those government emails.

While the “parent workgroup” is only getting started, the Education Department’s recent meeting in Orlando last week revealed how the state is positioning itself to spread those controls from school libraries to teachers’ classrooms.

As the meeting ended, Clinton McCkracken, the head of the Orange County teachers union, made a comment to another parent: “I don’t know what to tell my teachers.”

“The goal is to have the most conservative counties determine what the rest of the state has access to. It’s to allow a conservative ideology to hold rank over the rest of us,” said the project’s co-founder, Stephana Ferrell. “That’s what all of this is about. The attack on teachers, the banning of books—they need parents to not trust public education, so that they’re fed up and take taxpayer dollars into the for-profit education sector.”

The excerpted quote from your article spot on and combining this sequence of events with the (eventual) overturning of Affirmative Action by SCOTUS, and rendering Brown v Board of Education of Topeka essentially a footnote in history of when America tried to do the right thing. Once private schools dominate then de facto segregation based on race and socioeconomic status will as well not that it hadn't already based on boundary/zoning and other methods.

i haven't been paying attention to FL, does Crist even stand a chance?

it's really too bad that debates don't have more of an impact.

He’s used to being surrounded by sycophants. So it’s not strange that he wouldn’t know how to deal with adversity. But unlike his mentor tfg, I think he’s betraying a bit of conscience. Deep down he knows he’s deeply insecure and at core an asshole. When his pol bros are high fiving him for spending tax dollars to fly helpless people around, it’s all smiles. But when confronted with a decent normal human being, he withers.

It won't make a shit.  I'm not sure I've seen a Rep win a debate in the last 20 years but they usually win in the South.  Their voters are either too stupid or cruel.  Usually both.

So saw this tweet yesterday:

It's something that I've noticed well before this. DeSantis holds a lot of little mini congratulatory press conferences and if someone does push back, he IMMEDIATELY gets defensive and gets that kind of whine in his voice and starts lashing out. Most people don't see it since it's not on a national stage. But if he decides to run and starts taking heat from national media and the other candidates on a debate stage, I could quickly see it turning south for him. (No idea, however, if stuff like that matters anymore.)

Trump for all his antics can be charismatic to his audience. Hell, I can't stand the guy and admit he has said some funny stuff. I don't know that DeSantis actually has that. Trump also has a way of pushing back and making it sound like he is "fighting." DeSantis' pushing back just sounds like "whining."

I just don't see DeSantis being able to go toe-to-toe with Trump and not come away looking like this:

As much as Ted Cruz is a piece of shit, he has some reasonable amount of debate presence and composure, even when Trump was unabashedly slamming Ted's character and his wife's looks, and even when a remnant from Ted's pre-debate snack makes an appearance.

Trump might make DeSantis openly cry during a debate.

So Ted Cruz is another one -- when he argues it sounds like he is fighting. But, not charismatic.

I've been saying this for a while. Desantis is short and has a whiny, nasally voice. Trump will have this guy in literal tears on stage in 5 minutes. He'll be "Squeaky little Ron Desantis" and he'll never recover.

Good.

Hope he has fun getting hoisted on Dotard.

As I’ve written before. Desantis wilts under pressure. During the gubernatorial contest in 2018, Andrew Gillum routinely dragged his ass for points.

Yeah, he folds under pressure a lot easier than you'd think of a U.S. Naval Officer.  he musta had some confidence at some point to get that piece of ass for a wife unless it was a "mayo/paula" situation at the shipyards.

As Longhorn Bob Wheeler would say, "Ron is not forged of a 'hotter fire'."  Maybe gorged of a hotter buffet.

Trump should take some time to come up with some better ones.  I always liked the [adjective.firstname] combo.

Crooked Hillary.  Low-Energy Jeb.  Little Marco.  Lyin' Ted.

It's like he was creating his own set of Garbage Pail Kids.

No, he literally procreated his own set of Kids from a Garbage Pail.

I mean, I think Tiffany might be okay in the end.  Shit even Barron had a shot but he's fucked now that his literal most formative 6 years are occurring right alongside him figuring out hid father had a hand in almost ending the world and his mother is a Balkan sex worker who swallowed men's cum for cash.

Ivanka is the one who was technically on White House payroll which means she can be held to a higher standard of criminality.  Donald will watch her marched off to prison.  Eric will voluntarily go to prison to protect Dad because he doesn't grasp the leverage he has.  Donald, Junior will die of a fentanyl overdose in early 2024.  Barron will eventually murder 3 or 4 people before taking his own life.  Tiffany will marry, change her name immediately, and fade into obscurity.  Melania will be dead by 60, 65 tops due to a fucked up lifestyle.  The only good news about Trump living longer than  fat tub of shit like him should is he gets to see some of his loved ones die on his watch.

Back to DeSantis...his wife seems nice.  she's obviously been duped, but I kinda like her.
