There is no way Ron can win the presidency, so I was kinda hoping he would win the primary and make Trump go third party. It would destroy the Republicans to split like that, but I don't think Ron is smart enough to make it that far. He might not even make it to the starting line at this point. What a complete dumbass.

I go back and forth on what the fuck is he doing - I was thinking he would do what's needed to polish his credentials and get ready for 2028, but it would be tough with him being out of office and all, but still it's happened before.  He would present himself as the alternative to Trump for Republicans who don't like Trump, and clearly he is given the polling, and I thought "well he'll run this campaign, he'll bow out gracefully later this year or into the primaries, maybe even join the Trump campaign somehow, or talk about being a cabinet member if Trump is elected".  All of this requires candidates who are not raging assholes, and for a game of sorts to be played where people defer to one another and it's understood that DeSantis will drop out.

But Trump is out to completely destroy him and DeSantis is destroying himself without anybody else's help in terms of the Disney fight he may have ultimately shot himself in the foot with this comments about Trump's NYC problems ("I don't know what goes into paying hush money to a porn star") because that's something that would send Trump into a rage.

If he continues fucking up with Disney and with letting Trump walk all over him, DeSantis's only option at this point is to go on the offensive.  He's looking really weak/meek at this point - he's pulling a Ted Cruz and letting Trump walk all over  him  All we need is Trump insulting DeSantis's wife and kids.

DeSantis' whole plan must have been for Trump to go to jail before the election. Then he could thump his chest and act offended.

This makes a metric fuckton more sense than what his current plan appears to be.  Stay relevant, good or bad, in the media.  Don't attack Trump directly so as to permanently sour his base this far out from the primaries.  Keep doing anti-woke shit in Florida.  His only massive mis-step in the eyes of the base is attacking Disney.  They agree with it in principle but he's made to cardinal sins-1) He's losing, they don't like losing & 2) Even the most base moronic voters have fond memories of Disney movies and parks.

The calendar is going be the biggest factor IMO in the GOP nomination.

-Trump already now has 1 case against him with a set of important dates that I imagine are being laid out as I type this.  There are three others that will all follow completely disparate timelines.  He has to tip-toe that entire minefield of 4 independent prosecutors' dates and locations.  That won't be easy as primary season heats up.

-DeSantis' state session will be over in a few weeks and thus a lot of his legislative spotlight will wane considerably.  His Summer and Autumn will be spent doing more speaking/campaigning I suspect.  His Legislature won't convene again until March of 2024, right when primary season heats up.  By Florida law, he can either run that session and not be running for President.  Or he has to sit it out (I guess, not sure, that the Lt. Gov. would take over) and can then run unfettered for President.  But it completely kneecaps him for 2025 and 2026 in Florida if he loses the nomination.

-The debate schedule.  The debates will begin in August/September.  None of their voters are watching for any substance up there.  The only real policy wonk is Nikki Haley and she'll be lucky to even get a podium.  Trump will just be up there shouting about how persecuted he is and the rest will just nod along and let him have the platform.  This is where it gets tricky for DeSantis.  He's gotta punch back at the inevitable insults and look like he's got backbone unlike Cruz.  But he can't hit back too hard.  And if there so much as one pre-trial hearing against Trump within 3 days either way of these debates, Trump gets to shout about how politically motivated the cases are and his base will eat it up.  I suspect the RNC will keep the schedule as flexible as possible so they can either be moved closer to various court dates for Trump so he can claim victimhood or moved farther apart to favor another candidate.

August 2023 to August 2024 is a giant maze of dates for court, debates, legislative sessions, and primaries.  The schedule is gonna beat the literal shit out of Trump.  DeSantis' advantage is youth, energy (in the physical sense), not bogged down by Florida for 10 months, and not being under indictment.  Though he's a shit candidate, those other factors are heavily to his advantage if he can quit tripping over his tiny dick.

It really is his only path. Trump gets convicted of a crime serious enough to scare off the suburbs, Ron squeaks by in the primary without ever saying a negative word about Trump, then goes on a blitzkrieg of deep state conspiracies and says the first thing he'll do as President is pardon Trump and shutter the FBI/CIA/whatever to win over MAGA.

Either that or bend the knee and run as his VP.

Do people in the suburbs vote in the primaries?

He’ll definitely bend the knee but I can’t see any scenario where Trump picks him for VP

Yes, suburban turnout is 100% what primaries in both parties hinge on.  Depending on the state/metro area, across both parties...suburban turnout in presidential year primaries typically hovers around 1/4-1/3rd of eligible voters in those areas, and makes up over half the voter turnout in such elections.  The dividing line in the suburbs in terms of party breakout is increasingly dependent on what women voters do and that's broken down by age and college/non-college.  Simple as that.

And yes, to your second point.  NO way in the world Trump would pick DeSantis.  VP's aren't picked anymore for geographic relevance.  Even if they were, Trump doesn't need help from Ron to carry Florida.  Ron balances it out a bit by age, but DeSantis doesn't turn out female voters like somebody else could.  Women will like his wife and that unlike Trump, DeSantis appears to at least know the names of all of his children.  But that's about it.  He's not particularly wholesome or religious (like Pence).  I would think DeSantis would actually go for it, setting him up nicely for 2028...but no way Trump does it.  Never mind the personal bullshit, it just adds nothing to the ticket.  Only thing is that the RNC does need somebody much younger on the ticket, but not young with high energy that would overshadow Donald.

There are many misconceptions about the rules of a president choosing their running mate. There’s no law or regulation against a president and vice president of the United States being from the same state. The reason why some people mistakenly believe such a prohibition exists comes down to a particular aspect of the Electoral College system laid out in Article II of the U.S. Constitution.

Article II states: “The electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for two persons, of whom one at least shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

Under the original system, electors did not distinguish between candidates for the nation’s top two offices; the candidate with the most votes became president, while the runner-up became vice president. The 12th Amendment, adopted in 1804 after two chaotic elections, mandated that electors cast separate ballots for president and vice president. However, the rule preventing an elector from voting for two people from his home state remained in effect under the new system.

In most elections, this quirk in the system wouldn’t even matter. In 2008, Barack Obama could have chosen a running mate from his home state of Illinois in either 2008 or 2012 with no adverse effect; the same goes for Ronald Reagan in 1980 or ’84, George H.W. Bush in 1988 and Bill Clinton in 1992 or ‘96.

But if an election turns out to be particularly close, the rule could potentially come into play. It almost did in the notoriously contentious election of 2000. When Texas Gov. George W. Bush chose Dick Cheney as his running mate on the Republican ticket, Cheney had been living and voting and paying taxes for five years in Texas. Shortly before the election, however, Cheney obtained a Wyoming driver’s license and put his Dallas home on the market. (He had a vacation home in Wyoming, which is the state he had formerly represented in the U.S. Congress.) Good thing for him he did: The Bush-Cheney ticket ended up winning with 271 electoral votes—just a slim five-vote margin—over Al Gore and Joe Lieberman, a total they certainly wouldn’t have hit without Texas’ 32 votes.

This article is confusing at the very end. W was winning Texas — and 32 EC votes — no matter who his running mate was. Maybe she meant to say it’s a good thing he had Cheney as running mate to pick up Wyoming’s three EC votes.

Yep, the memes/gifs/clips/whatever should be flowing in now.

"Perhaps after the high primary losses, we could swing down to Myrtle Beach where one of my donors has a timeshare..."

(also, I completely forgot he was one of the ragtag members of Police Academy.  At 5'11", he towers of Ron.  And of course, he left acting to pursue starting a production company in..........................Florida.  Nope, no simulation here sinners).

My god, thank you to the universe for finally helping so many of us struggling with trying to figure out who the fuck DeSantis sounded like.

Florida’s electoral votes?  Hatey Barbie from South Dakota  brings 3.  Florida brings 30.

He's such a thin-skinned snowflake. How do you not have a boring ass canned response that you can deadpan deliver ready to go for a question you knew was going to be asked? He's a terrible politician. Not a snowball's chance in hell that this guy could win a national election.

Ron has painted himself into a cultural war corner and has one of the most punchable faces of any national figure to boot. So smarmy and unlikable. It's amazing really.

I am starting to believe this is it for him, and he'll be a no-show in 2028, because A) you're right, he is fucking up the really simple stuff that he should have been prepared for and B) TrumpCo is out to destroy him and make him toxic for MAGA.

I'm guessing Trump and Co. have decided he's a major concern (more so than Biden) since he gives the never-Trumpers and moderates somebody to coalesce around and that scares them, especially in light of upcoming legal troubles.  If the Atlanta and DOJ crank things up to 11, Trump and Co. have to be worried that DeSantis might peel of 10-15% and be in the running for the primaries.

"Donald Trump loathes Ron DeSantis for the Florida governor’s “disloyal” challenge to Trump’s iron grip on the Republican Party. The former president’s ire, however, is dwarfed by the intense desire harbored by some of Trump’s key aides and allies to see DeSantis politically ruined.

These advisers, lawmakers, and operatives personally know DeSantis or used to work for him. Now, some of them are working to reelect Trump and have brought their intimate knowledge of DeSantis’ operations, and also what makes Trump’s likely 2024 primary rival tick. Just as importantly, some of the Team-DeSantis-turned-Team-Trump contingent have talked to the ex-president about how best to relentlessly mess with DeSantis, assuring Trump that the Florida governor is uniquely “insecure” and “sensitive,” and that it’s easy to get in his head, two such sources who’ve spoken to Trump tell Rolling Stone."

Rather than spend months and millions combatting DeSantis and possibly making himself look worse, has it occurred to Team Trump to take the easy route.  Wind up come MAGA loyalist who doesn’t appear to be a loyal MAGA guy and take advantage of Ron’s rather robust travel schedule of late which will certainly last through the end of the year?

HAHAHA- Trump's running videos attacking Ron on his truth social account

https://truthsocial.com/@realDonaldTrump/posts/110256360937764164

and this was another gem from today:

Quote

The “Consultants” are sending DeSanctus, and demanding he go immediately, on an emergency Round the World tour of U.S representative population countries, like South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, and Israel, in order to up his game and see if he can remove the stain from his failing campaign. Bad poll numbers! Perhaps he can, and perhaps he can’t, who really knows, but he’ll have plenty of time to think as he sits alone, on his tax payer funded airplane, riding it out and thinking, WHY???
