Is there even such a thing as a normal guy who is a Republican politician anymore?  Is it even possible?  In the last two primaries, the competition has been Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and this fucking guy.  I'm not even daring to dream for sensible policy positions, sound moral principles, competence, or anything so fancy like that.  I mean, can we even find a guy who can speak like he is an actual human and not a weird alien wearing a skinsuit?

there are a few that on the surface seem sensible, if only by comparison.  folks like chris sununu that can give a 6 minute interview and look reasonably sane when put next to trump or desantis.  he's the type that all the "decent" republican voters are hoping against hope will beat trump and desantis so they can vote for somebody who reminds them of the good old days, where they can have a president they can just ignore.

of course because of these reasons and others, he'll poll around 1-2% and won't win any primaries.  there are some "normal" republican politicians i'm sure, but the voter base is so whacked out right-wing insane, that most of them got beat in their congressional primaries by the mtg's of the world, because they're out of step with the current gqp.

the ones that run for president will be no different, and in response to these guys/gals getting their shit pushed in during the primaries, the middle of the road republican voter will just have no choice but to hold their nose and pull the lever for trump, because biden is a radical left whack-job socialist baby killer who wants open borders and drag queens serving fentanyl to your kids for breakfast.

same as it ever was.

No no no. Joe Biden has been in public service for 50 years and his entire career can be summed up by the negative effects of the 1994 crime bill. Everything that’s in his heart, his entire soul, can be defined by just that one thing. Nothing else he’s ever done, tge things he says, the people he cares for, the empathy he shows, the diversity of his cabinet, his promotion of freedom and equal rights for everyone…none of that matters. It’s just one thing that defines him and a rational, mature, complex guy like Brothahorn can see that.

That’s why he embraces Ron DeSantis, because he knows what a threat the teaching of African-American history in our schools is to our way of life. We can’t have our white children feeling guilty for how black people have been treated in the past. We need a fascist like Ron to persecute black and brown and LGBTQ communities, not a racist like Joe Biden to choose the first black VP, to select the first black Defense Secretary, to appoint the first black woman to the Supreme Court. Not that racist piece of shit. No, he sponsored a bill 30 years ago and its negative effects prove that in his heart, Joe Biden thinks black peoples are inferior to white people.

Hail Ron.

I was stuck in traffic and listened to the Twitter Desantis interview for 5 minutes. I think he matter of factly rattled off 4-5 acronyms, only one of which I actually knew (CRT).

Looks like this will be an "extremely online" candidacy almost solely focused on the culture war.

One of the things that currently stands out about America’s politics are that the two camps now basically inhabit different linguistic spaces. Except for Trump, who inhabits his own. Remarkable how effective garbled syntax and name-calling is.

A lot of the ones in Charlottesville who didn’t wound up losing their jobs. A lot of the ones at the Capitol on Jan. 6 who didn’t wound up in jail.

I guess he’s thinking that he can reach Trumps rednecks through Twitter.  I’m guessing they have enough attention to read some shit talk in a 140 character post from Trump, but not enough to listen to that stupid announcement.

The fact that he apparently thinks hitching his wagon to Elon Musk is the best way to take down Trump is going to lead to even more batshit crazy things than I thought possible.

"Governor Desantis, why has Lethal Weapon 2 been added on the list of banned materials in the State of Florida?"

"Look, we are against critical race theory in Florida, and that includes being against those who are critical of South Africa's race theories. I'm just saying there are a lot of different opinions about Apartheid - was it bad? Or was it not so bad?  Everyone has to do their own research and decide for themselves."

I feel like the GOP candidates are in one of those getting chased by the bear and just needing to not be the slowest one. But instead of a bear, it's Jack Smith or one of the various other investigations. The candidates just need to get thru the initial shit flinging from Trump, and if/when Trump is unable to run for President, the others have a true chance.

Come on meatball, do better. "GAC" is the noise that Cruz makes every time Trump shoots a load down his throat, and I'm pretty sure Rafael already trademarked that for his 2028 WH run.

This.

Just outlast Trump as he goes to the slammer.  But then the last Rep standing will get hammered by Biden so long as there are no major issues like a big credit default to hang on him.

I'm 100% convinced that the reason Biden is trying to negotiate with McCarthy instead of telling him to fuck off and do his job is that he at least has to look like he's trying and not fuck up the blue wave coming in 2024 that will expand the supreme court (and impeach the crooks) and pass social legislation for women's rights and end the filibuster.

Ha. Now DeSantis is going after Trump for "turning the US over to Fauci". So now each is going to go after the other to prove they weren't Fauci butt boys. This is going to be great. Maybe they'll each have a coronary.

TALLAHASSEE, FL—Attempting his formal announcement again in an effort to compensate for last night’s glitch-ridden debacle on Twitter, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis reportedly relaunched his presidential campaign Thursday from inside a burning Tesla. “America deserves a president who won’t cave to wokeness and will instead embrace the values of our founding fathers,” said DeSantis, who, sitting in the front seat of a Tesla Roadster as it filled with smoke and the doors automatically locked, looked on helplessly when the hood erupted in flames, the self-driving function engaged, and the fiery vehicle tore through the streets, running over numerous pedestrians. “We must rein in the administrative state, and President…President Biden isn’t… Shit, shit, shit. Um, we need—oh God!—we need to shut down the border, and…we, ugh, I need help! Please, call 9-1-1! I can’t control this thing!” At press time, first responders had reportedly rescued DeSantis by pulling him out through one of the Tesla windows, its bulletproof glass having shattered immediately after an officer fired a single shot at it.

She said she had only read parts of the books.  “They have to read for me because I’m not an expert,” she said. “I’m not a reader. I’m not a book person. I’m a mom involved in my children’s education.”

See, this is why Republicans need to stick to being bigoted against American blacks and gays.  The lame ass cover story to prove you’re not a bigot - “I love listening to Prince and Diana Ross” or “I watch Project Runway all the time” - is just so much more believable than, “Well, actually I’ll have you know I’m a big fan of [pauses while frantically Googling] … the famous Israeli TV series “Fauda”.  Yes, I’m sure that is how it’s pronounced.  Watching Fauda has been a tradition in our house for many years, or however long it has been on the air.”

Complete aside/tangent---was totally blown away by my in-laws comments earlier this month.  He's finally retiring and giving up the cattle ranch and farming.  But will still hang around the land and direct crews and such.  Understandable.  But they're going on and on about how society needs more churchin' (I was fine with this since they were in town for grand-daughter's first communion).  And being Foxnews watchers, damn brown people and more guns and less woke gays.  And they've always been pretty green for their neck of the woods, and he just launches into this tirade about how the Republican Party's war on the planet is fucking bullshit.  That we need to be stewards of the Earth and protect and preserve what god and nature gave us.  And as a man who has worked the land for 60 years with his hands and knows the tale and walks the walk, it was really cool to hear.  Obviously women can't be trusted to read books or treat their bodies on their own accord, but it was a really need moment.  He's always felt that way but never had the safe space to say it.  His exact words, "There ain't no world but this one, should treat it as such."  It was like listening to Carl Sagan himself.  But yeah, them fucking gays...........

Well he's a White Catholic from rural Kansas in his 70's.  How the fuck do you think he votes?  But he's at least coming to grips with the bill of goods he was sold by bullshit Republicans.  And then he's also facing down the barrel of his wishes that his four daughters (no pics) marry four local, white Catholic boys.  Instead, his oldest married my half-Hispanic Jew-Lutheran ass, next is common-law married to a Vietnamese guy (who I love like a brother), then next one marries a lily white Baptist West Texan (helluva nice guy but family is very anti-Catholic), and then youngest marries a black dude from K.C.

Moral of the story---help folks see the light with regard to people and the planet even later in life.  Never too late.  There really are some people dying to find the light and happiness later in life, not just embracing more hatred.

I think spending a few years living in Florida really fucked with my dad.  He was always a hands-off, live and let live Libertarian perhaps Centre-Right Republican for most of his life.  And after spending many years in NYC and FLA, he settles down to work in Pennsylvania and became a very "I honestly don't give a shit.  If I can help, I will help, if not I will get outta the way." type of man.  He spent most of his life dealing with union workforce guys and high level C-suite executives.  He married a woman from Mexico and really never gave a shit about people's background.  And then kinda went numb for a long while.  And in his final years, confided in me that nothing about a person matters except what happens that day.  We are not the sum of our parts.  You don't get to take credit for where you were born.  Every single fucking day, you wake up and justify your existence and when you lay your head to rest-that is the end result of your efforts.  All the rest is noise.  Trump and DeSantis will be gone soon enough.  It's their disciples I'll be cleaning up for decades to come.................

Did this get overlooked? Signed into law just hours before DeSantis announced his presidential run, it did more then just change Florida’s “resign-to-run”’law that prevented the sitting Governor from running for higher office. It also created new restrictions on voter registration and drew lawsuits from a number of groups including the NAACP and the League of Women Voters because, predictably, it would have a negative effect on the registration of Black & Hispanic voters. I saw this story mentioned on some news broadcast and had to search for it. Then I had to sift through the hits from 2019 and 2021 when the Florida GOP drew lawsuits in response to their earlier efforts to suppress the vote.

Florida election bill immediately challenged in federal court

League of Women Voters and NAACP are among plaintiffs who allege SB 7050 will harm efforts to sign up voters.

TALLAHASSEE — After Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a major elections bill Wednesday, legal battles immediately began about new restrictions on voter registration groups.

Organizations such as the League of Women Voters of Florida and the NAACP filed two federal lawsuits arguing that the restrictions violate First Amendment rights and will harm efforts to sign up Black and Hispanic voters.

The Republican-controlled Legislature passed the bill (SB 7050) last month and DeSantis signed it Wednesday, hours before formally announcing that he will run for president in 2024. The bill focuses heavily on placing additional restrictions on “third-party” voter registration groups, including dramatically increasing fines for legal violations and preventing non-U.S. citizens from handling registration applications.

“These onerous, overbroad, and vague requirements do not serve and cannot be justified by any compelling or legitimate state interest,” said a lawsuit filed by the League of Women Voters of Florida and the League of Women Voters of Florida Education Fund.

“The challenged provisions’ only aim, and indeed, only effect, is to limit the ability of (third-party registration groups) like (the League of Women Voters) to register eligible Florida citizens to vote, and in so doing, persuade them to action by participating in the electoral process.”

Republican supporters, however, have argued that the changes are designed to bolster election security and protect information submitted by voters.

“There is no more sacred thing than our vote, and in this state, when it comes to our elections, we want to be crystal clear: It should be easy to vote and hard to cheat,” Rep. John Snyder, R-Stuart, said before the House passed the bill April 28.

DeSantis’ approval of the bill Wednesday and the resulting lawsuits marked the start of another chapter in years of political and legal fights about changes in Florida’s elections laws. Republican leaders in Florida and across the country have repeatedly pushed to make voting changes after former President Donald Trump lost his re-election bid in 2020.

The lawsuits, which were filed in federal court in Tallahassee, seek injunctions against the disputed parts of the bill and allege violations of First Amendment, due process and equal protection rights. While the League of Women Voters filed one lawsuit, the other was filed by a coalition of groups such as the NAACP, Disability Rights Florida and Alianza for Progress.

The League of Women Voters case names as defendants Secretary of State Cord Byrd and Attorney General Ashley Moody. The other lawsuit names as defendants Byrd, Moody and the 67 county supervisors of elections.

An underlying issue in the lawsuits is that the plaintiffs say voter registration groups play an important role in registering Black and Hispanic voters. Black voters in particular are a key Democratic Party constituency.

The lawsuit filed by the coalition of groups alleges that the voter registration restrictions “were purposefully enacted, at least in part, with a racially discriminatory intent to discriminate against Black and Hispanic voters and have the effect individually and collectively of denying, abridging, or suppressing the right to vote of otherwise eligible voters on account of race, ethnicity, or color.”

Among the issues targeted in the lawsuits:

The bill significantly increases fines for violations by voter registration organizations. As an example, groups could face a maximum of $250,000 in fines each year — five times the current $50,000 annual cap — for failing to submit completed registration applications to elections supervisors on time.

- The bill reduces from 14 days to 10 days the length of time groups have to turn applications in to elections supervisors.

- The bill bars non-citizens and people who have been convicted of certain felonies from handling voter registration applications for the groups.

- The bill prevents the groups from retaining personal information about people who sign up to vote.

- The bill requires the groups to provide “receipts” to people who register.

Both lawsuits allege, in part, that the bill violates political speech rights protected by the First Amendment and would have a “chilling” effect on the groups. For example, one of the plaintiffs, Equal Ground Education Fund, expects to stop efforts to register voters during the upcoming election cycle because of the “increased risk of exorbitant fines imposed by SB 7050,” according to the coalition lawsuit.
