Alright gents, long time lurker. I bought my first classic car, a 1998 Toyota 4runner Limited with 1 owner and 109k miles total. I would love to trick this thing out over time but wonder if this thing would be much more valuable and collectable if I leave it original as is? Debating on keeping this a roadtrip/dog/kids/lake car or keeping it for a couple years putting some work into it and selling it at a profit.

The only work it needs is a new driver's seat due to tears and the clear coat has begun to fade on the roof. If anyone has recommendations on where to start looking for both of those things that would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

She gets here on Friday.

Needs a new antenna, too.  Easy to replace, though. Congrats.  Truck should last you a good, long while.  Just drive it and don't worry about it.  It's not going to appreciate like a Landcruiser.  There are too many of them around for that.

Ex-wife had it on her 15. When it went out I put Bilsteins on it and she didn’t notice a difference.

Did you just replace the shocks or did you change the coils as well.   Toyota shop (not dealer) recommending converting to full SR5 suspension.  Apparently the coils are different and it affects the ride.

I wish I could remember, but it's probably been 6 years. I think we just did the tubes.

I have never owned a car this old nor am I very mechanical. Figure this would be a good one to learn the ropes on somewhat.

Is there a go to website or place to look for antennas and or the seats that I mentioned were torn?

Any idea what paint/clear coat would cost? Do I take it to a dealership or do I just google local paint shops and research? I am in the Dallas area and thank you for the help.

Search the web for a Toyota 4Runner group - its a great place to get answers to specific questions.  Don't get anywhere near a dealership with a 26 year old car.

https://www.4runners.com/

For stuff like antennas, google and youtube are your friends.  90% of fixes you want to make will be on youtube.

I have zero knowledge of value as a collectible, other than paying attention to bringatrailer.com and some others on social media, but my suspicion is that your truck doesn't hold much value in that realm.  My uneducated opinion is that you trick it out how you want it and drive the hell out of it.  I loved my Gen3 and thought it handled much better than my Gen5.

What a find! It looks to be in great condition, especially the paint. I have a 99 SR5 Sport V6 4x4 in that same metallic green with 175k. That color looks great but it has a real tendency to fade and oxidize so protect it. Mine needs a total paint job.

Some things to watch for. The sunroof can get leaky. Check the gaskets and blow out the drain. Videos are on the interwebs. Next, get the radiator checked and flushed; if it’s the original it’s 26 years old and might need replacement. Assume the timing belt is original so that’s going to be coming up soon along with the water pump. The interior plastics are 26 years old and can get fragile. Last week my driver controls in the armrest fell into the door!

You can get a new own seat cover . Otherwise I’m in the survivor camp of leaving it as original as possible. It’s a great low mileage example that should give you and the family years of fun. Mines now a family heirloom that my son wants and now my 9 year old granddaughter.

Appreciate it! What do you think a good price to pay was? Want to see if I overpayed or under.

You know it’s a 26 year old truck and it’s hard to appraise it as it’s very market driven. 109k and good paint is a big plus and it’s a limited. I’m selfish. I hope you paid 5 figures on it to tell me that I’m not an idiot for carrying full coverage and spending money on mine. Sometimes I go online and mines worth $10k other days it looks like it’s worth $3k. Gen3s are hot.

Do you feel good about the price? Then it’s well-bought.

It’s already been mentioned but the radiator needs to be done to avoid the dreaded pink milkshake. Also, the lower ball joints probably need replacement as those were a weak point. Great trucks; I’ve got a 02 with 255k on it

Maybe not on antenna. Usually it is just the plastic chain that drives the antenna that needs replacing. Don't go cheap - get the OEM. Cheap ones are not the same size. I had to replace the chain and then the entire motor later on. The motor is easy to get to BUT good ole Toyota saved a few pennies on the antenna cable. It does not disconnect from the motor so you have to thread the new one all the way to the radio. I gave up trying to follow the factory path since I would have to remove AC vent structure.

On the 3rd gen 4Runner there are really only 2 or 3 preventativre maintenance things to do. Replace the radiator or move the transmission cooler external. If the internal hose connection fails you  get antifreeze in transmission. Second is lower ball joints. Third is rear axle seals. These are hit/miss. The truck isn't going to quit working if they start leaking but ten years is a good guide on them.

Finding a new/better seat is tough because of the age. I had mine redone by a guy off Mopac and they only lasted 5 years. I then just went to seat covers. You can get an entire new leather kit but it is for all the seats. The clearcoat was a known issue on that color. A body shop visit might help but usually it requires a respray.

and I just saw the post above me mentioning radiator and LBJ :)

The plastic part is part of the antenna unit. Probably doesn't need a motor.

That was kinda my point.  It is very easy to replace the plastic chain. Not so easy for the whole motor. Most of the time the chain is all that is needed

I’ve broken the power antenna mast several times on my 99. It’s easier to replace the mast than switch to a rubber mast. It takes less than five minutes. I get it from Amazon. Remove the antenna nut. It’s easier if you get your wife to switch on the power. Mast extends up and out. Watch the plastic length to see where the teeth point. Put the new plastic in aligned same as the old. Turn off the radio and it will feed into the motor. Tighten the nut. Done..

That's a 2WD SR5 that has been badged up as a TRD Pro, right? Still seems like a pretty damn great price if the history is clean.

Where's the listing?  Is the carfax clean?  Is it from an area that has recently been underwater?  Etc.  Sounds too good to be true but hey if it's for real, go for it.

r/Toyota - 2025 4Runner TRD Convertible Surf Concept Unveiled

LAS VEGAS (Oct. 31, 2024) – Toyota proudly introduced the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept, a striking concept vehicle inspired by Southern California’s vibrant surf culture, at the 2024 SEMA Show. Built at the Toyota Motorsports Garage, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept combines the rugged, open-air spirit of the first-generation 4Runner with the cutting-edge technology and design of the all-new 2025 4Runner, creating a unique tribute to the adventurous lifestyle that shaped a generation.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept draws inspiration from an iconic time in history when the Toyota 4Runner became a staple at 80s So-Cal beaches, as surfers sought the perfect wave. Marty Schwerter, lead builder and Director of Operations at Toyota’s Motorsports Technical Center, said his vision was shaped by his own experiences cruising the Pacific Coast Highway in a Toyota mini pickup. He saw the spirit of the first generation in the 2025 4Runner and envisioned a concept that captures the essence of those sun-soaked days.

“The 2025 4Runner reminded me of the original, with its rugged look and powerhouse 4cyl engine. I knew it had the potential to be the ultimate beach cruiser,” said Schwerter. “We wanted to create something that would resonate today while paying homage to the past. The removable top was a must, just like the original, and we made sure it’s as functional as it is stylish.”

4Runner TRD Surf Concept began life as an all-new 2025 4Runner TRD Limited. The iForce 2.4L turbocharged engine delivers 278 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission. Power is distributed by way of a full-time four-wheel drive system, with an electronically controlled dual-range transfer case. A custom exhaust gives the factory powertrain a satisfying exhaust note.

Schwerter’s team immediately started focusing on transforming the most capable 4Runner into the perfect beach boss. However, creating a “factory” 4Runner that looks and performs equally well with the top off as it does with the top on, posed a number of challenges.

“Engineering a legitimate, removable top; going from a 4-door to a 2-door while maintaining functional windows; flipping the front passenger seat for improved rear seat access; and adding 2-inches of width to both sides were all just tip of the iceberg issues,” Schwerter said. “What makes this build so stellar has less to do with the changes themselves and more to do with the amazing way that they all work together—the result is truly greater than the sum of the parts.”

Every detail of the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept has been meticulously planned and crafted to celebrate its coastal roots. When focus shifted to the removable top transformation, nothing was left to chance. To gain real-world insight, a practice run was done on a GEN5 4Runner. Once work began in earnest, the team spent several days lining everything up. The removable top was built in-house, blending traditional fabrication with CAD and modern 3D printing technology to shape cutlines that perfectly mirrored both sides of the body, creating a perfect fit. Designed to be easily removed by a single person, this feature provides the open-air freedom synonymous with the 4Runner legacy.

As rugged as it is stylish, the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept’s long-travel suspension system features billet aluminum front upper and lower A-arms, designed to handle the toughest terrain while providing a smooth ride. Steering upgrades, custom front axles, and Toyota Tundra rear-end housing complement the custom suspension. At each corner, 37-inch tires, mounted to 17x.8.5-inch custom wheels, complete the concept’s muscular appearance.

In preparation for any adventure the 4Runner TRD Surf Concept might encounter, the weatherproofed interior includes soft, waterproof flooring and a front passenger seat that flips forward to allow easy access to the rear seating area. Accessories include a custom surfboard “Travel Quiver” made specifically for this concept, which pairs perfectly with the roof rack.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept also highlights the collaborative spirit within Toyota, bringing together various departments such as TRD North Carolina, TMNA Production Engineering, Service Parts and Accessory Development (SPAD), AAP, and Motorsports and Engagement Marketing to bring this concept to life.

“This vehicle not only showcases Toyota’s engineering prowess; it also reflects the passion and creativity of our team members who are dedicated to pushing the boundaries. And besides, who doesn’t love a concept dedicated to surfing!?” said Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing.

The 4Runner TRD Surf Concept will be on display at the 2024 SEMA Show from November 5-8 at the Las Vegas Convention Center in the Toyota booth (Central Hall, Booth 22200). Attendees are invited to visit Toyota’s booth to experience this innovative concept up close and discover how Toyota continues to honor its heritage while embracing the future of automotive adventure.

I'd say yes, good price. But why are these pics of diff trucks?! In comparison, I just saw a 2013 4x4 Tacoma with 132,000 miles listed for $17,500, and I thought THAT was a good price.

also, unless I'm missing it, that truck isn't 4WD. No selector I can see anywhere. I didn't think they made a TRD Pro that wasn't 4x4
