How is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine a distraction from China?

Taiwan can be taken under the radar if every one is focused on Russia.

China isn’t taking Taiwan by force after witnessing the complete Russian shit show unless the world completely backs off Russia, which it won’t.  But if they try, they will also be meet with crushing sanctions and complete isolation from the Western World.  This would solve the problem of a rising China and its fascist  influence real quick.

That could happen. A lot of things could happen. North Korea could invade South Korea. Iran could attack Israel.

Are you arguing that Russia is not as big of a problem as China right now?

I don't know that Western sanctions would be as effective against China, but I do know they can't secretly prepare to invade Taiwan. We are not so fucking distracted by Russia's bullshit that we wouldn't notice a military buildup large enough to invade Taiwan. It will be interesting to see how willing China is to support Russia economically moving forward as they suddenly hold huge leverage over putin.

Pretty interesting read from a couple years ago. Exactly as it's happening now, an "undeclared" war.

So interesting how "lock down" used to be a prison term only and after China adopted it against it's own people the West started doing it too.

China is shutting off manufacturing to the West, and supporting all the countries that are enemies with us. You can maybe put some dots together once they take Taiwan?

I am not an economist so take it easy if this is a dumb question, but what the fuck it the big deal with SA taking yuan for payment for Chinese oil sales?   My understanding is the yuan is pegged to the dollar anyway and we have being trying to get the Chinese to stop pegging their currency to the dollar for a while since this artificially devalues their currency and makes their good cheaper to export.   A stronger yuan will make Chinese products more expensive and help with the massive US trade deficit that we have been trying to tackle for decades.

Anyone interested in better understanding Xi Jinping Thought/Socialism with Chinese Characteristics ought to read Jiang Shigong. I believe China is destined to fracture in our lifetimes, and it's important to read the words of some of their thought leaders to sense their inner fear.

Or, uh, you could give me some cliff's notes about it fracturing in our lifetime. Because that seems...culturally unlikely to this lay person. But I'd love to learn more without out putting in the actual work, because, you know, 4 year old.

Chinese fascist thought leader. I am curious about how this fracturing will take place too. Xi has been rolling back liberalization in China but it's not like China ever had a bastion of liberalism outside of Hong Kong.

And the British aren't rolling back around and claiming ownership of that or any other aspect for a hundred years or two any time soon.

That's a good thing though. European colonialism laid the foundation for the proceeding shitshow especially in China.

Peter Zeihan goes into more depth on their possible fracture due to social strife from a widely imbalanced M:F gender ratio (I believe it's 118:100 in their <40 demographic). The Chinese are militantly loyal to local authority but generally distrustful of federal authority, and they've been this way for centuries. Because of this, their current unified run is something of a miracle. They're far more socially complex and pro-democratic in private than western media would ever portray.

Jiang Shigong is one of their primary thought leaders who knows this and thus is trying to bolster the state through codifying moral transformation into CCP ideals. He is an avid scholar of people such as Deleuze, Nietzsche, Foucault, Marx, and Carl Schmitt (gulp). He knows that the state's current authority is only as strong as its constant economic improvement, so he wants China to continue to reject harmful outside forces. Chinese citizens expect to be better off than their parents, and this has been easy in recent times due to Mao's abhorrent economic policies followed by Deng Xiaoping's successful reforms. Funnily enough, he generally dislikes Deng because he believes China was becoming too submissive to the West under his influence.

Xi is rolling back liberalization because he knows that'll doom the CCP's long term legitimacy. Just let the demographic chaos play out and watch it crumble. It won't happen any time soon, but just be patient.

Yes, China indeed views its rise and hopeful global hegemony as payback for the century of humiliation. Thankfully for us, they simply were never meant to be true leaders.

Yes. I should have clarified that I meant American Catholics. It’s important for everyone to understand that it’s largely just liberal Western democracies who are opposed to China. I think many already understand this and are disappointed by it, but I still see lots of hubris from Western journalists/the general public who can’t believe that non-Western nations don’t really care about human rights abuses in China.

I'm not sure that most people understand that it's just western liberal democracies that dislike China. I'm pretty sure that most people don't even understand that there is an alliance of western liberal democracies that are in opposition to China, Russia and other authoritarian countries.

A good portion of Americans don't even understand the importance of the U.S. alliance with Europe.

Does this affect the Chinese timeline regarding Taiwan?

I think they’re closer to moving than most would think. They greenlit the Ukraine invasion and had to be aware of the turmoil that would result.

I don't know that China greenlit the Ukraine invasion as opposed to it being provided a heads up by Putin. Also, the fact that they have appeared reticent and not overtly supporting Russia in the UN tells you enough about where they stand. Everyone foolishly believed that Ukraine would be roadkill in less than two weeks and clearly that hasn't happened.

I am happy to eat my words, but China has enough difficulty domestically for any Taiwan invasion to take place for the next few years. The new wave of COVID is hitting them hard and they have shitty vaccines in addition to their supply chains being disrupted. Their populace is fed up with the CCCP's draconian measures and if the Red Army foolishly leaves the mainland, there will be revolution. China's navy is nowhere sophisticated enough to pull off an invasion AND subsequently maintain an occupation.

You're also forgetting the presence of the Quad (which meets next week by the way) consisting of the US, Japan, India, and Australia. While it remains to be seen how this new Aussie administration (that's historically been more liberal with China) will behave, you can bet on the US, Japan, and India doing whatever necessary to thwart and derail China. Keep in mind that Taiwan is crucial for Indo-Pacific shipping lanes that all three of those countries highly value.  Additionally, North Korea might become another thorn in their side as it appears that COVID is finally hitting them hard and Russia can't even help themselves.

Another point is the health of Xi Jinping (https://www.newsweek.com/china-xi-jinping-health-aneurysm-rumors-zero-covid-1707184), Is he, like Putin, also trying to have a last hurrah and cement his legacy as the next best thing for Red China since Mao? How long will he last and what type of situation will his successor inherit?

To sum it all up, China is still a paper dragon that can only achieve influence through "debt trap" diplomacy. Since we have an actual President that has some semblance of foreign policy experience, autocratic nations are being stifled and will have to pause to consider further pursuing their devious imperialistic campaigns.

Apple has limited the use of the AirDrop wireless file sharing function on devices in China, just weeks after reports that some protesters had used the popular feature to spread messages critical of the Chinese government.

Users of iPhones in mainland China who updated their iOS software this week can send or receive files from non-contacts for only up to 10 minutes after manually selecting a new “Everyone for 10 minutes” option, according to tests performed by CNN’s Beijing bureau.

Users not in China face no such restriction and are able to receive files wirelessly from anyone, including people who are not contacts.

The change does not appear to affect iPhones in use in China that were purchased outside the country, according to the CNN team. Apple (AAPL) told CNN Business the new feature will be expanded globally in the coming year.

The update comes just weeks after reports in international media, including The New York Times and Vice World News, that some residents in China were using AirDrop, which can be used only between Apple devices, to spread leaflets and images echoing slogans used in a rare protest against Chinese leader Xi Jinping on October 13.

On that day, shortly before Xi secured a precedent-breaking third term, two banners were hung on an overpass

China currently in the finding out stage and not enjoying it.

https://www.politico.eu/article/china-diplomacy-liu-he-europe-beijing-davos-world-economic-forum-xi-jinping/

China turns on the charm

President Xi Jinping seeks break from foreign friction as he wrestles with COVID and a faltering economy

Beijing wants to be friends again.

Chinese diplomats are fanning out with a new softer message for international partners and adversaries alike. Gone is the aggressive “wolf warrior” rhetoric. In its place, a warmer tone and a promise of economic cooperation.
