No, cars unlap after the track is cleared.
And then the SC does not come off until the next lap. There is no provision in the rules to allow only the lapped cars between P1 and P2 to unlap and then immediately pull the SC seconds later. Masi didn't care about the rules, he wanted an exciting last lap for tv, so he made it happen.

I'm sure Greg Maffei will give him a big bonus for that.

Not only that, it proved you can have a drawn-out, on-the-edge battle between 2 cars switching between inside and and outside lanes....without flagrant divebombs... AND it was between a red bull and mercedes no less.

Mercedes still complained that Perez was driving "dangerously". Buncha bitches in F1 (including Red Bull).

Yet there they are, hanging their asses out on the line for your entertainment. Real time reactions might be annoying but nobody in Formula 1 is a bitch.

Where did I say they weren't hanging their asses on the line? Saying they are acting like bitches (with all the sanctimonious whining from most of them when they all do the same shit) doesn't mean they aren't fearless

Are you saying that a competent race director is going to OK cars to unlap while there is still personnel and heavy equipment on the track?

Yes because there were 3 miles of track where it was safe to do so. Marshals frequently make dash and grabs for debris under green flag conditions. That is significantly more dangerous than unlapping under safety car conditions with a yellow flag in the affected sector.

One side is arguing for a specific combination of follow the regulations verbatim here but follow non-regulations precedent there to achieve the desired result. It's not Verstappen fanboys.

Checo did nothing wrong with Lewis. Dude did some great driving.

I wanted Hamilton to win. Got tipped on the outcome when I was bringing up the OnDemand Broadcast. Knowing the outcome made the race no less entertaining. Checo and Hamilton going at it was nothing but racing. Great stuff.

He's busy masturbating.

His guy he was rooting for in the battle won the WDC and unseated a 7-time world champion. I hope he enjoys the hell out of it. I know I did.

I mean if you're arguing he should have followed the rules of the sport I completely agree. If he felt the track was safe then let them overtake on lap 1 of the SC. Hell, maybe lap 2 or 3. That's his choice to make in the rulebook. Alonso et al. were arguing for this very thing to happen for integrity's sake. He officiated the race in a way that would have to end under a yellow flag.

Rules don't permit him to allow only a few hand-picked cars to overtake, and then bring the SC in a lap early.

Not like this, man. Masi circumvented the rules and handed the title to Max.

This puts a really sour taste in my mouth for F1. Why have any rules if the rules don't matter? Let's just go Thunderdome.

But to be clear, i do not blame Max or RBR for this. It's all on Masi and the FIA.

Same. Max was handed the opportunity on a silver platter and he took it. Good on him.

Fuck Massi. I want to know why he changed his mind on the lapped cars. Was it him? Was it Liberty Media? It was a shit show bad for the sport.

Do I think the race (and subsequently the title) ended up being handed to Red Bull and Verstappen? For sure.

But do I think that the more deserving driver won the championship this year? Also yes. If not for Verstappen being hit by Mercedes twice in a row at the British and Hungarian GP this would have already been over

Meh. From this thread I'm 100% convinced no matter how Max won, people would be salty about it for one reason or another. May as well enjoy it for now. Figure out how to fix the mess regarding the rules starting tomorrow.

I think he's an arrogant, petulant prick who happens to drive for the biggest cunt in the sport. I was always going to be salty with a loss but hey, the lead they earned let him drive the way he drove and he's a really fucking fast driver who out-performs his car. If he was faster today then hats off.

I wasn't prepared to have it manipulated the way it was. I'm really pissed because of that. Probably overly so but whatever.

And the Perelli blown tire when he was on the last laps of a decisive win.

Lewis and Merc are such whiny bitches. They fucked up their pit strategies, twice, and it cost them both the race and the championship.

He didn't pit the VSC because they liked the track position. They were right - Max didn't gain close to the 16 seconds he needed to catch him.

He didn't pit the SC because they aren't going to give the championship leader the fucking lead with 5 laps to go, and a track filled with machinery and debris.

So rules don't matter as long as you win? Can't say i agree.

Max and RB didn't break any rules (as you mentioned earlier). If the officials make a mess of it, that's on them. Why not enjoy the win if you are a fan?

But for the sport, yes, rules/implementation need to change. I would have also said the same if the race ended on yellow flags as that's not a good end either.  I'm not sure why they wouldn't just let the lapped cars through right away. Others mentioned not having a clear track yet. Seems weird that you can't let cars through without a clear track when they roll through there without an escort before the safety car comes out.

Regarding ending on yellow, I think that would also cause issues in a tight race ending. What would be to keep Sergio or Valterri from taking a dive if their teammate was under pressure at the front? Stop the threat and ensure the victory under yellow.

Doesn't explain why they pitted on lap 15.

If Max had won on merit alone, fine, he wins. He’s still a muppet, but he’s a WDC with no controversy. Massi ignored rules to manufacture an opportunity for Max to win. It taints the win. It puts the legitimacy into arguments for a long time. As someone else said - why have rules if they can be flat changed at the race directors whim??

For fuck's sake.  Did you not watch any other race this year?  Some decisions may have sucked but they've been consistent...at many races this year and then again today.

Muppet? Did you just binge watch Ted Lasso or something?

Yeah, I don't understand pitting that early when you were on mediums and Hamilton was flying. You had to know that 40 laps later it would be hard for pace. The thinking seemed to be just cover what Verstappen does. But then they abandoned that later on.

Hamilton was the faster driver today. Just one more pit stop and he is world champion. He even questioned it, although he does that quite often.

Agree with most of this but I’m not sure it taints the win. He took advantage of an opportunity that came about through no fault or funny business of his own. The rules were absolutely massaged to create an event that generated a racing end rather than an end under yellow. But it wasn’t right to make that choice at the cost of bending the rules as everyone seemed to understand them before today.

I don't like caution laps.  The time you save from running a few laps behind a safety car is negligible.  Make a rule that any caution flag with 10 or less laps to go is an automatic red flag.  That way no races end under a caution and you don't have situations like today.

Never said they broke rules. Masi did, though.

Exactly.  Pitting right after Max and nulling the advantage of starting on mediums was very stupid on Merc's part.  One of their multiple critical mistakes today.

Toto went full prevent defense once LH took the big lead. He was playing to not lose. RB played to win and go home to fuck the prom queen.

I hope McLaren can get a quality car together next year and punt both of these teams off of the podium.

Is Alpha Romeo asking him? I think Bottas quit taking Toto's calls a few days ago. Hamilton was always going to be on his own today.

Decisions on who was in a corner first are different from chunking the rule book out the window to manufacture a last lap between only two drivers.
