The Tennessee football program is under investigation for alleged recruiting violations and impermissible benefits to current student-athletes, according to a report from Trey Wallace of Fox Sports Knoxville.

Tennessee backup quarterback Brian Maurer and starting running back Eric Gray were held out of Saturday’s game against Texas A&M, but there was no reason given for their absence. Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley and running backs coach Jay Graham were also missing.

The alleged violations involve current Tennessee players along with recruits. There are multiple assistant coaches, staffers and players who have been questioned as part of the investigation. Wallace’s report specifically named inside linebackers coach Brian Niedermeyer.

Jeremy Pruitt was also asked about the report of a compliance and NCAA investigation.

“I haven’t seen the article. Anytime in college football, you have typical compliance stuff. That’s all I know.”

LOL.  A caller on the post game show said TN has lost 7 straight games against teams with an all male roster.

Kind of tangential but I was surprised Vandy cancelled today instead of rolling out the women's soccer team.

Would have been an improvement.

Update: Vol staff saying their goodbyes.  They think they're done.

At least they can take solace in all their wins and championships that the cheating helped deliver.

Wonder if a few Tennessee folks stirred up this mess in an attempt to get Pruitt fired.  Might just be minor violations, but enough reason to finish off Pruitt at Tennessee...

Is Tennessee trying to get out from under Jeremy Pruitt’s contract?

By Zach Barnett -   December 19, 2020

Tennessee is investigating possible recruiting violations inside its football program, it was reported Saturday.

The news, first reported by Trey Wallace, says Tennessee is looking into possible recruiting violations and impermissible “said to involve players recruited by Tennessee and players currently on the roster.”

We don’t know how serious or how real any alleged violations are or are not. Schools self-report violations to the NCAA all the time.

“In keeping with our institutional commitment to compliance, we often look closely at regulatory issues that are brought to our attention via internal or external channels. Maintaining compliance is a shared responsibility, and active monitoring is part of that process,” the school said in response to the report.

What’s interesting here is the timing. The news broke just as Tennessee kicked off its season finale on Saturday afternoon. If the Volunteers lose, as expected, to No. 5 Texas A&M (they’re losing as I type this), Tennessee would close the year losing seven of its final eight games, defeating only winless Vanderbilt.

AD Phillip Fulmer extended Pruitt not even three months ago, as Tennessee was in the midst of an 8-game winning streak. That extension upped the athletics department’s commitments to $12.8 million for Pruitt personally and nearly $19 million for the entire staff. Leaking this piece of news, at this time, could be an attempt to get out from under Pruitt’s contract for far less than the sticker price.

We can’t say for sure Tennessee is doing that. We can just say this is the exact type of move a school would make if they were doing that.

Things may be cooling down a bit... might even "freeze" soon... 😋

TN certainly isn't worried about Freeze's history...

Their bad for taking his agents bullshit bait and extending him. You are a major college football program, you hired a guy with high school success,  if his agent comes to you for.more money and years, tell him to fuck off n prove it.

Kind of an odd situation - even for the sec sec sec.

I read somewhere that Freeze was not a candidate for Auburn because the sec considers him a persona non grata.  So how could TN justify hiring this particular guy after ridding themselves of Pruitt w/ the 'ol "breech of contract for cheating" gimmick?

Slap on one's own wrist situation.  Assistant coach allegedly gave a credit card to a couple of current players to take a recruit out to dinner.  Radio fanbois and twitter twats ran with the rumors to pressure UT to fire with cause.  Likely have a coach or two limited on contact with recruits and maybe lose a scholly or two.  Good news for Texas is there are a number of VOL fans trumpeting Herman as a replacement for Beldar LOLOLOLOL
