Texas Roster 2021 -- Turn This Shit Around

Agree but I would like to see Collins get tried at DE in the spring.   Maybe I'm wrong, but I believe he has the quicks to be a monster there.  Bookends of him and Sanders at DE could be something.

I think he should get snaps there.  But he's an absolute monster at DT.  A dominant DT will always be the #1 priority in any good defense.  Having to double team him is going to make it a lot easier for the ends to get a pass rush.  It also makes it a lot easier for the LBs.  I know we like to give a lot of credit to Ash and Huztler but switching to a 4 man front was probably the best this for our linebackers.  It's a lot easier for them to clean up what the DL can't rather than relying on them to hit the right gaps like they would need to in a 3 man front.  Between Collins, Coburn, and Sweat, there aren't going to be many teams that can handle those guys.  Those guys are all around 325-350 pounds.  No team should be able to run on us next year and that includes ou.

This roster may not be Bama, tOSU, Clemson good... but this team should not lose more than 1-2 games next year.  We have way more talent than the rest of the Big 12 and equal/better talent to ou.  They simply need coaches that can put them in positions to succeed.

"QB:  I'm really interested in how this plays out.  Casey will want to be the starter and he will portal if Card beats him out or if Bryce Young follows Sark.  Also curious if Sark looks around and trys to bring in a veteran transfer like Riley does every year.  I really want to see what Casey can do but not sure how he fits into Sark's offense."

Unless Mac Jones returns in 2021 Bryce Young will be the starter, He is the only QB on the roster to have had any meaningful snaps. The only other is Paul Tyson who was a pretty good high school QB, but he's only played a few snaps last year.

I guess it's possible Saban gets a transfer to add insurance but it will be Bryce Youngs team. I can't see him walking away from that to go to Texas on a chance he gets the job. Of course I'm not a 19 year old so anything is possible.

My only hope is that he sees his QB coach,  his OC, and possible his OL coach all leave.  He's also going to lose Najee Harris, Smith, Waddle and their TE to the draft.  They will also lose their good OL for the draft.  That's a lot of players being replaced and coaches being replaced.  I know Saban is a machine and that roster is loaded with 5 stars, but a look at LSU should tell you that losing that many coaches and players is a recipe for a bad offense.  I doubt he will leave Bama but if I was Sark, I pitch him this and ask him if he wants to be the QB in Sarks system or hope for the unknown.

Brewer coming back makes me feel even worse about this team next year.
Jeez, more slot time for Brewer threatening unsuspecting linebackers with his amazing speed and route running.

I was certain this would be his last year and welcomed the idea of having Wiley as the default TE1. Unbelievable.

you gotta believe that sark will look at wiley and look at brewer and look at the tape and do the right thing.

Tyler Johnson had health issues for most of 2020

Humidor  (Early October)

We have confirmed Anwar Richardson’s report that Tyler Johnson is out with a mystery illness. We wish him the best. That shouldn’t affect this season too much. To our knowledge there is nobody in quarantine. Heading into the third game the team is mostly healthy. There are the typical bumps and bruises but nothing too severe or worth reporting.

No team should be able to run on us  inside next year

What drives me crazy is seeing team abandon inside or between the tackle runs and start bouncing outside effectively.  We need to be able to force teams to be as one dimensional as possible and then blitz them to death.

Tyler Owens, Vernon Broughton, and Prince Dorbah are all guys we need to take the next step this off season. We don't necessarily need them to become starters, but they need to be relied upon to come in and make a play in specific situations. That would really help the defense out.

Owens was supposedly asked to move to LB and resisted. At this point, I see him as a more likely portal candidate than a contributor for Texas. Maybe that changes if we get a new DC.

by the old staff? does that matter that much anymore? wouldn't he wait for the new dc?

I didn't say he would portal immediately. I'm skeptical about his future at Texas if Ash is retained.

I’m skeptical about his future at Texas regardless. He’s going to struggle playing safety in just about any defense, unless he plays robber in a 3 safety scheme, which is pretty much just playing LB. if he’s not willing to switch, I don’t think he’ll make it here.

I have high hopes for Ja'Tavion Sanders.

I'm curious how Sarkisian decides to use him, he seems to have a crazy high ceiling at both TE and DE. My preference would be on defense but being an offensive guy I wonder if giving himself a guy like that to play with will be too tempting for Sark.

I took a quick glance at his offensive stats at Alabama, they haven't really utilized the TE much since he has been calling plays. Of course that could just be a function of the absurd receiver room they had the last two years.

what was the deal with MARQEZ BIMAGE this year?  Did he get hurt or opt out? He's on the roster but no plays this year.  At one point I thought he might be a contributor?

EDIT - apparently he opted out.  He might be a guy off the edge this season.

Yep. Forgot to put the best player on the team, completely on brand for me. Did account for his number in the RB numbers and total roster count.

Also,

Spoiler

EDIT: 6:04pm

According to multiple people inside the program, the meeting was spearheaded by Roschon Johnson, Josh Thompson, and Casey Thompson.

Players were asking “what do we do now?”

The leaders told the team to stay in shape, use the workout packet they were given after the Alamo Bowl and check on teammates each day. Work on hip mobility because that’s one of the things Coach Steve Sarkisian will be looking for this spring.

One player who had been through this before (coaching change) told the group the most important thing they can do is buy-in immediately. There’s a renewed excitement among this group of players.

Incredibly astute for the current and future leaders of this program to do this.

I still don’t really have a grip on who they are counting towards the 85, but if D. Young does return wouldn’t he be considered a Covid returning senior and be red in your list?

He never RS'd. The guys in red have expired their eligibility but are getting another year due to Covid. But yes, I have no idea who will actually count against the 85. I am just guessing.

Hopefully we get someone in the transfer portal.  Based on that chart above we only have 8 DL (assuming none of the seniors stay) + 2 true freshmen coming in.  And most of the 8 are green.

FYI from Jeff Howe (yesterday)

"Mpagi and Brown haven’t officially been medically retired. I don’t believe either was with the team in the fall but that’s no different than the guys who opted out for COVID reasons."

Casey fits fine.  He's not a run first QB like JQJ.  He's a strong arm that hits the long ball in stride just fine.  See Alamo bowl.  That said he can also beat you with his feet.

Sarkisian strikes again. LSU graduate transfer Ray Thornton has committed to Texas, Inside Texas has learned.  The 6-foot-4, 225-pound outside linebacker collected 45 tackles, three sacks, one pass deflection, and one forced fumble during his time in Baton Rouge.  The Killeen Shoemaker product was a four-star in the Class of 2016, and had offers from Texas, Cal, Michigan, Kansas, and North Texas. Thornton joins a talented linebacking corps that includes DeMarvion Overshown, Juwan Mitchell, Jaylan Ford, and David Gbenda.

Notebook Evaluation: He showed good burst and ability to get in the backfield in high school. He combines size and speed from the linebacker position that every college program desires. The 5th-year prospect never broke through at Louisiana State despite logging playing time on defense and special teams, but contains the potential to make an impact at the collegiate level. – Justin Wells

LT gets interesting if Kersetter comes back. I assume Jones and Karic will battle it out while Kersetter stays at RT. He’s in a tough spot. Projects as a NFL center, much better football at OT.

Majors was well, a major surprise me. Credit to the kid to taking offseason workouts very seriously. His strength improved immensely in under a year.

Texas should be fine at Guard with Angilau and Okafor. Imade ain’t much of a football player, but you don’t turn away 6th year senior OL.
