Keithron Lee joins Texas class with Christmas Day announcement

ByMIKE ROACH 66 minutes ago

The Longhorns needed some big play ability on offense, and they found it today with Keithron Lee. The three-star wide receiver from Bryan (Texas) Rudder chose the Longhorns over offers from Ole Miss, SMU, TCU, Tennessee, Texas Tech, Arizona State, Washington and Utah. Lee originally committed to UTSA in April, but he decided to open his recruitment in September in search of new schools.

Lee joins Casey Cain and Jaden Alexis as the receiving group in this class, and Lee is the first in-state prospect to choose the Longhorns at the position. In his senior season, Lee ran for 554 yards and 9 touchdown son 65 carries and 1,139 yards and 16 touchdown on 65 receptions.

During his varsity career, Lee played wide receiver, running back and defensive back. In his junior season, Lee was selected First-team all-district. Over the course of his three year career, Lee put up insane production tallying 1,157 yards rushing and 17 touchdowns averaging 8.4 yards per carry. He also added 2,322 yards and 32 touchdowns receiving on 19 yards per reception.

At 5-foot-10, 175 pounds, Lee is ranked as the No. 86 wide receiver in the nation and No. 75 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports Composite.

TEXAS LONGHORNS FOOTBALL  Commitment Spotlight – Keithron Lee

2 hours ago   December 25, 2020.  ByTristan Larsen

National Signing Day saw the Texas Longhorns pull in a solid Top-20 recruiting class. As Tom Herman mentioned in his Signing Day Press Conference, the Longhorns expected more commitments to come in between then and February.  One big one came on Christmas Day through the commitment of Keithron Lee. The Rudder High School wide receiver announced his top-eight schools via his Twitter at the end of November. That list included Baylor, Ole Miss, SMU, TCU, Tennessee, Texas, Texas Tech, and Utah. Today, Lee makes it official, he’s headed to Texas.

Lee will only have to travel two hours  from his home in Bryan, TX to get to the 40 Acres. The 5’10 175-pound wide receiver is a three-star commit via the 247Sports Composite. He’s ranked as the 86th best wide receiver in the nation and overall the 76th best player in Texas via those same rankings.

Lee can do it all as at the high school level. He took snaps at defensive back, running back, and wide receiver. In 2020 he recorded 65 receptions for 1,139 yards and 16 touchdowns while also adding another 554 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground. In his career, Lee has amassed 1,157 rushing yards, 125 receptions, 2,322 receiving yards, and 49 touchdowns from scrimmage.

He joins Jaden Alexis and Casey Cain as one of three wide receiver commits that the Longhorns have secured in their 2021 recruiting class.

Player Information

Name: Keithron Lee
Position: Wide Receiver
High School: Rudder
City, State: Bryan, TX

Measurables

Height: 5’10
Weight: 175lbs

Three Best Traits

Playmaking – When you need a big play, get the ball to number five. He’s the focal point of the Rudder offense and for good reason. He can catch, and take a handoff on a reverse and do damage. Lee is a playmaker through and through. In the running game, he can take any handoff the distance. In the passing game, watch for him to run go routes or bubble screens getting him into space. He’s a big-play wide receiver that does it all for the Rangers. His speed and sheer playmaking ability will translate to the next level nicely.

High Pointing the Ball – For being on the shorter end at 5’10, Lee is exceptional at grabbing the ball at its highest point and bringing it down. You would expect Lee to play out of the slot but many times he’s out wide on the opposition’s top cornerback. Just throw it up to him and more likely than not he will get a hand on it. Even in double coverage, Lee can go up and wrestle the ball away from anyone. That’s a special thing to see out of a sub-six-foot tall wide-out.

Speed – Lee’s game revolves around his speed, acceleration, and overall ability to make the secondary look silly. He’s constantly outrunning everyone on the field. Lee has true track and field speed on the gridiron. Just give him the ball out and space and watch sheer athleticism at work.

Areas for Improvement

Route Running – For Lee to really develop into a top-level wide receiver at the next level he needs a more diverse route tree. Right now, his routes consist of bubble screens, go routes, and touch passes. No doubt that stuff will work at the next level. But for him to see the field on a consistent basis he needs more routes to his game. This is something that he can easily work on and develop as time goes on.

Blocking – Lee at 5’10 175-pounds isn’t the biggest guy in the world. He relies on his speed, not his strength. Thus, he really hasn’t been asked to do too much blocking at Rudder. Texas possesses one of the freakiest running backs in the nation in Bijan Robinson. There’s no doubt he’ll be the focal point of this offense soon. Lee will have to learn to be able to block cornerbacks consistently when Robinson takes it outside the tackles in the future.

Summary

Lee is a pure speedster. With offenses becoming more pass-oriented and teams spreading the field more than ever before, Lee is perfect for the game of football now. He’s just a guy who you need to get the ball to and he’ll make anyone pay. Lee adds some depth to the wide receiver position as he is the third wide receiver commit for Texas’s class of 2021. Lee fits the same mold of a Jaden Alexis, who is also in this class. Those two inside with Casey Cain outside makes things look good for the future.

Final Verdict

This is a great pickup for Texas as Lee can be extremely beneficial to the Longhorns’ future offense. What Lee lacks in stars, he makes up for in speed. He joins Jaden Alexis, Jonathon Brooks, Casey Cain, Hayden Conner, Juan Davis, Gunnar Helm, Max Merril, and Charles Wright as offensive commitments for Texas’s 2021 class.

IT Staff -- Texas adds Keithron Lee to 2021 class

It’s a Christmas commitment!

Texas added Bryan Rudder ATH Keithron Lee to its 2021 class Friday. Lee held offers from Utah, Texas Tech, Tennessee, TCU, SMU, Baylor, Arizona State, and Washington among others.

How he fits at Texas: Lee is an elite skill athlete who could go in a few different directions with his football career. As a receiver at Rudder he’s closing in on a 1,000-yard season as a pass-catcher with 397 yards and counting in the run game, mostly on sweeps. His change of direction and acceleration are effortless but he can also high point the ball in the air and plays with physicality going for the ball or finishing runs that belie his still skinny frame. It’d be interesting to see if he’d be willing to try cornerback, where he could bring D’Shawn Jamison level athleticism and ball skills. As a receiver his best bet is as an H or potentially a Z receiver on the outside. — Comparison: D’Shawn Jamison (Ian Boyd)

Coach says: Strengths – Fiery competitor with explosive lower body. Has excellent acceleration and straight line speed with above average agility and change of direction. Shows great anticipation for the football. Great balance. Tracks the ball well and adjusts to the poorly thrown ball well. Catches away from his body and will attack the ball frequently. Very hard for the defender to read as ball arrives. Route running is very good with consistent pad level, good eye/head movement and violent hip action. Runs a variety of routes on film. Very productive and very versatile. A physical and willing run blocker.

Areas for Improvement / Concern – Main concern is the size but 10 or 20 pounds could make him an effective contributor. Would like to see him against press man. — Comparison: Joshua Moore

How this affects Texas: UTSA spotted this guy early, and before they could hold onto his commitment, he blew up. Texas, Tennessee, Ole Miss, and SMU brought offers to the table, and the 5-foot-10, 175-pound two-way athlete is definitely on the rise. UT has an abundance of slot receivers in the program, but not many with the speed (4.4 40) and twitch (4.1 shuttle) of Lee. UT needs at least one more receiver in this class and Lee might be that guy. I suspect a new staff will also find the Bryan native alluring. — Comparison: Kennedy Snell (Justin Wells)

The tape and the reports suggest a player who's better than three stars. Not that stars matter, I guess, but he seems a bit undervalued. I guess there were just that manner guys better in this crop.

So in other words, watch the tape?

Every year some undersized back/receiver from Tech, Kansas St or other tier 2 program rips us up and down the field. If we can’t get the J. Waddle’s or R. Moore’s of the world, maybe we can have our own undersized terror on the field.

We say that about every sub-4 star player around here

Locally, the word is Keithron runs a 4.4 forty.  Can get confirmation on that after the Christmas break.  As a freshman, Keithron skipped football to focus on basketball.  As a sophomore, he returned to football, made the varsity, and caught 21 passes for 472 yds and 5 TD’s despite a year off.  That lack of continuity might explain why he didn’t blow up until his senior season.

Best info I found on his speed:

"For his height, Lee has exceptional ball skills, as he’s able to track the football well and attack it outside of his body. And while he didn’t run track in high school and there aren’t any verified testing times for him, he does report a 4.4 40 and 4.1 shuttle that seem plausible based on his film — he’s a high-level athlete who demonstrates excellent short-area quickness and long speed. Those attributes help Lee showcase refined route-running ability that should translate quickly to the college game."

No, the posters that know what they are talking about don't say that about every sub-4 star player. Have you not paid attention to the OL recruiting discussion? The knowledgeable posters have been very objective in criticizing our coaches for the poor recruiting. You, however, live in a reality where everything is bad and terrible, with no objective thoughts to acknowledge anythinig positive. You are the worst of the fan base by far and need counseling.

Lol go back to every thread about every 3 star skill player we have signed over the past 3 years. The majority of the threads have posts that say “this guy is the type of guy that goes to tcu and torches us”

I'm a pretty bad poster these days, too.

Thats Herman 5D chess for ya. Recruit the 3 star guys that would have torched us at TCU/ISU and convince the blue chips to go to Ohio State so we'll never face them.

There are only 4 three star skill players in our last 3 classes. Two were true freshmen this year. The other two are true sophomores, one of whom was a QB who was projected as a project TE (hint-he’s a good one). Not much for sample size.

One who I clearly remember being touted as a typical TCU- type Longhorn torcher went to Utah and had an excellent freshman season, R.I.P.

Late to the party, but hook 'em! If you can't get the top-tier ultra-polished WRs, grab a guy with measureables and production and stick him in the weight room.

Keep pumping that California sunshine. Maybe Tom will turn it around next year. Or the next year, for sure.

Hahahaha yeah, I can promise you my problem is not a belief that Tom Herman is the man to fix Texas Football.

I hear you. Sadly, I now believe that whom we recruit makes absolutely no difference whatsoever until Turtle Tom is long gone. He will make sure every recruit underachieves. At this point, getting excited about potential recruits is equivalent to admiring the paneling on the Titanic as it sinks beneath the waves.

Did you get a chance to follow up?

I liked this take, and now I think we have a coach who can use him right.
