Despite schedule, A&M has strong odds to win 2019 national title

  Reveal hidden contents

There are some high expectations for Texas A&M in Year 2 under Jimbo Fisher.

The Aggies lost a lot of talent to the NFL Draft and graduation but return a lot as well. Quarterback Kellen Mond is now an upperclassman with two years of experience. He has some very talented wide receivers in the likes of Kendrick Rogers, Quartney Davis and Jhamon Ausbon. There are also four offensive linemen returning with quite a bit of starting experience.

On the defensive side of the ball, there are a few more question marks. However, tackle Justin Madubuike and safeties Leon O'Neal Jr. and Keldrick Carper return to form a strong nucleus.

The Aggies have made appearances in a number of way-too-early preseason top-10 lists, as many expect the team to be a force in 2019. However, A&M also plays perhaps the toughest schedule in the country.

The Aggies have games against each of the consensus top-3 teams in the country. Only one of those - vs. Alabama - is at Kyle Field. Texas A&M must hit the road for contests at Clemson, the reigning national champions, and Georgia. In addition, LSU is also seen as a top-10 team. The Aggies will have to travel to Baton Rouge for the regular-season finale against the Tigers.

Because of the schedule, A&M is one of the few teams in the country that could withstand a loss - or even possibly two - and still have a legitimate shot at the College Football Playoff. One loss would mean A&M beat two of the top three teams in the country, plus another top-1o team.

With the schedule the Aggies have and the expectations for the team taking a step up in 2019, Texas A&M is pretty high on the updated odds from SuperBookUSA to win the national title in 2019.

Not surprisingly, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence returning as only a sophomore, Clemson leads the way with 2-1 odds to repeat as champion. Alabama is not far behind at 5-2 while Georgia and Ohio State both come in at 8-1. The Aggies are currently listed with 40-1 odds to win the national title this coming season. That puts the team at 13th-best overall.

While many believe, because of the schedule and the talent on campus, that 2020 could be the year for A&M to make some serious noise under Fisher for the first time, there are still some pretty high expectations nationally for the Aggies this coming year.

SPORTSBOOKUSA ODDS TO WIN THE NATIONAL TITLE

Clemson 2-1
Alabama 5-2
Georgia 8-1
Ohio State 8-1
Michigan 14-1
Oklahoma 18-1
Texas 25-1
Florida 30-1
Nebraska 30-1
Notre Dame 30-1
Oregon 30-1
Washington 30-1
Texas A&M 40-1
Auburn 60-1
LSU 60-1
Wisconsin 60-1
Florida State 100-1
Iowa 100-1
Miami 100-1
Mississippi State 100-1
Penn State 100-1
USC 100-1
Utah 100-1

I would’ve laughed at, “it’s a long shot, but here’s how A&M can win the title in 2019.” But JFC “strong odds to win?!” Any fan base besides aggy would mercilessly ridicule him for the next year for writing such a dumb article.

Absolutey unreal.

-- I've spoke a good bit to Baton Rouge (LA) ATH Joel Williams in the last few days. From what I've been told, Williams plans on making a commitment this spring, likely in April. The Aggies hosted Williams at the Super Bowl event, and they came away in a sterling spot to land the 6-2, 180 pound cover man. "Dang man, I love Texas A&M. They did it big during that Super Bowl event," Williams told me. The Aggies' options in the secondary are plentiful, and as Looch has said, the staff is making sure they're being as thorough as possible with the remaining spots. Williams is among a group of guys like Dwight McGlothernXavion AlfordJalen KimberVito TisdaleLorando JohnsonChris Thompson, and Darius Snow that are on the A&M big board and are strongly considering the Aggies.

-- Staying in the secondary, it turns out the Aggies inking Elijah Blades in the 2019 class could pay off on the West Coast in 2020, at least in terms of visits. I've had one source tell me Blades' link to California based DB's Elias Ricks and Clark Phillipshas got both looking at potential visits, though at last check, nothing had been scheduled. There's also a link between Blades and elite LB Justin Flowe that could lead to a visit. Flowe is reportedly going to be in Texas over the summer.

-- I've been given no reason to believe OL commits Akinola Ogunbiyi and Smart Chibuzo won't visit Texas this weekend. I'll check in with them later this week to see if anything has changed.

-- New in state name to know in 2021 is Port Arthur Memorial DE/OLB Jordon Thomas. At 6-3, 240 pounds, Thomas could project at a few different spots within the front seven. Texas offered recently, and I've been told by some southeast Texas sources that Terry Price should be by the school soon to check him out.

-- I spoke with PNG OL Jaylen Garth a bit today about new A&M coach Josh Henson, and it sounds like the Ags' new man will have some work to do, at least with Garth. Jaylen says he hasn't spoken with Henson since he got the A&M job (not that big of a deal seeing as how he arrives in College Station tonight) and that he wasn't being recruited all that heavily by Oklahoma State.

Two things here:

1) Im SHOCKED that brauniger mentions that flowe will be in texas but not WHY he will be in Texas. Fucking clowns.

2) This is exactly the shit I was talking about in regards to adidas 7 on 7 teams and pushing kids to visit adidas schools. Of course he can just swing by and visit college station for awhile on his Texas visit.

The tortured English these slackjawed mouth breathers roll out makes me laugh.

I couldn't figure out what that was supposed to mean, either.  Is he saying they are visiting?  Or did he leave out a negative in his fucked up sentence "I've been given no reason [not] to believe OL commits . . . won't visit Texas . . . ."

This is a great page to remind ourselves of what an incredible collection of mouth breathing dipshits reside in the sphere of aggy nation. 40-1 are apparently strong odds to win a title, and it is always fun to be reminded of the mental challenges suffered by one Daddy98. I just hope whichever “burners” they end up with at WR end up being better than former Alabama star, A. Gooper.

Could Kellen Mond come out early for the 2020 NFL Draft?

ByJEFF TARPLEY 3 hours ago

26

Texas A&M’s 2019 schedule includes road trips to Clemson, Georgia, and LSU as well as visit from perennial powerhouse Alabama that on the surface would appear to make a run at a SEC West title problematic. An easier schedule in 2020, the return of a significant number of major contributors, and the products of multiple Jimbo Fisher recruiting classes may make that year a more realistic breakout season for the Aggies in which they finish high enough to make the college football playoff or at worst a New Year’s Six bowl game.

One of those contributors is quarterback Kellen Mond, who will be a senior in 2020 and could be surrounded by a veteran cast at wide receiver and offensive line. Mond has already started 22 games in his A&M career and fought off the challenge of another young player in Nick Starkel, who is transferring because he couldn’t beat Mond out.

Mond has improved significantly as a passer since his arrival in College Station, going from a 52 percent completion rate as a freshman to a 57 percent this past season. His numbers say he is not a great runner at just over three yards per carry for his career, but he’s proven adept at extending plays with his legs. Moreover, he operates an offense that asks a lot of him mentally and he has a knack for coming up big when A&M needs him to cut it loose

And therein lies the dilemma - Will Mond make it to the 2020 season at A&M or do so well in 2019 that he leaves early for the NFL Draft?

A&M fans remain divided on Mond, so the prospect of him leaving after three years may be ludicrous to many of them. They see someone who isn’t the most accurate passer and, in a world where most quarterbacks have a 60 percent completion rate at a minimum, Mond’s 57 percent ranked as the worst among all underclassmen in the SEC last season. He still has inconsistent delivery and footwork from throw to throw. He will turn it over more than you might like as his nine interceptions were 11thin the SEC in 2018 and he also had two fumbles returned for touchdowns. Mond still a work in progress on going through his progressions. He’s not a big-time running threat who can offset his inconsistent passing with his legs. Finally, he’s not a prototype NFL quarterback when it comes to his size or arm strength.

Even so, Mond threw for over 3,000 yards last season, which ranked 30thin the country and a lot of the guys who finished ahead of him don’t return for 2019. A&M’s offense leaned on running back Trayveon Williams in 2018 to take some of the load off of Mond but it’s going to be his show in 2019 given Williams’ loss and the returnees that the Aggies have among their pass catching corps. It’s going to be a veteran group with talents such as Kendrick Rogers and Quartney Davis, who should be able to put up big numbers. The offensive line should provide better protection as they return five players with starting experience and more depth.

In addition, keep in mind that Mond continues to find ways to get better even when people don’t think he can because he’s a mentally tough guy. Mond held off Starkel, who was a far more polished thrower, by working on that aspect of his game to reduce Starkel’s competitive advantage there and then surpassed him in virtually all other aspects of the offense to win the starting job. His footwork and delivery are much better than they were when he got to campus and it’s not only made him more accurate but he’s got better velocity as well for the outside throws to the boundary.

He finds ways to come through in crucial situations against quality opponents, throwing for 430 yards versus Clemson last year and delivering two late drives to take the Aggies to the precipeice of overtime against the national champions. He was 16 of 35 during the first 59 minutes of the LSU game and then moved A&M 61 yards in three plays by perfectly executing the two minute drill to take the game to overtime where A&M could win it. In addition, Mond runs a West Coast offense in which he shoulders not only the burden of getting the Aggies in the right play but also making line calls which should appeal to NFL teams that still run a lot of West Coast concepts.

The big step that Mond has to take as a quarterback is with regard to his accuracy. He’s one of just three quarterbacks out of the 30 who threw for at least 3,000 yards but was also under a 59-percent completion rate. Given his work ethic as well superior protection and route running from his supporting cast, it’s not out of the realm of possibility for Mond to improve his completion percentage to over 60% which basically has to be a given at the position in this day and age of shorter routes and timing patterns.

If he does so, then A&M may be far more successful in 2019 than people currently suspect despite their schedule and Mond may be too. In turn, he may well put up numbers that make him draftable despite lacking prototype size and arm strength.

Here are some final season numbers from the 2018 first round NFL draftees (completion rate, average yards per attempt, touchdown to interception ratio).

Baker Mayfield: 71%, 11.5, 43/6

Sam Darnold: 63%, 8.6, 26/13

Josh Rosen: 63%, 8.3. 26/10

Lamar Jackson: 59%, 8.5, 27/10

Josh Allen: 56%, 6.7, 16/6

Mond’s numbers aren’t that far off right now in comparison to what those guys put up in their last season. You improve his footwork and delivery - which in turn could improve his completion percentage and average per attempt while playing in a West Coast offense - and he may be someone who’s capable of leaving A&M early, especially as the NFL really appears to be desperate to find quarterbacks who can play which has pushed numbers at the position up their boards in the last two drafts.

Finally, prior to the 2018 campaign, the odds were probably against eligible draft prospects such as Williams, McCoy, Dodson, and Sternberger putting up the numbers that could enable them to leave early. However, this is a staff that has proven that it can make people better and Mond is already one of those guys. With another season under his belt, Mond and A&M may have hard decisions to make after the 2019 season even though on the surface no one is really contemplating life without him in 2020.

Just now, Terry Silver said:

The level of delusion is reaching Fran era levels.  If Jimbo produces just a fraction of the aggy misery that Fran produced, we're all in for a real treat.

It really is. Their talk of aggy having strong odds to win the title and Mond leaving early is pure insanity. Do they not realize next year is basically a rebuilding year for the? They lost almost every single one of their best players from last year and their depth chart ain’t exactly stacked.

lol at "he's not far off from the numbers that Mayfield, Darnold, Rosen, and Jackson put up." The only one he compares favorably to is Allen, and Allen has a cannon, prototypical size, and can run. Jackson had like 1500 yards rushing. Darnold and Rosen had much better accuracy and a much better TD-INT ratio. Double up Mond's stats and he would be comparable to Mayfield.

Just ludicrous.

The few reasonable posters that I've come across have looked towards 2020 as their year to make noise, since the schedule gets easier with Georgia and Clemson coming off, and Colorado as their P5 non-conference game, Mond being a senior, and Bama likely losing Tua and LSU losing Burrow

I'm curious as to which important starters they're likely losing though. They seems likely to lose Rogers and Ausbon at WR, and Marmaduke on the DL. Anyone else worth mentioning?

I actually think that's unlikely.  I expect their D to take a pretty decent step back next year, given all their losses, and I don't think Elko will be in demand next winter like he has been this winter.

Yep - he's making a huge mistake sticking around this year if he is wanting out any time soon.  Although was he even the favorite for the Bengals job? He might not have an alternative that is willing to pay what aggy is.

Looch had a screed on his radio show yesterday about how the fan base was too hard on Mond.  And that Mond is better than Ehlinger, of course.

He started it by saying, "If national writers have Ehlinger on their Heisman watch lists, well Kellen Mond better be on there too. Because [condescending] OKAY, they beat Georgia in the Sugar Bowl [/voice], but guess which team beat UGA by 3 touchdowns earlier in the season, and A&M beat that team in their last game!"

Also in that whole thing, he was pleading with the fans that are hard on Mond, "Look, you know what you're doing if you're being this hard on Mond as opposed to other starting QBs that have come through this program, and you need to cut it out." Basically implying that most aggy have a problem with Mond other than his play making abilities. Gee, I wonder what it could be 🤔

Every QB with a pulse goes on the Heisman watch list at the beginning of the season. Mond will be there. Neither Mond nor Ehlinger will win it though.

I wouldn't put that past him.  That poor kid gets berated every time he comes to the sideline after a drive--regardless of how he performed.  Jimbo is a fucking psycho, and Mond looks like an abuse victim in those close up sideline shots.

All this paints a pretty good picture but the main motivation is waking up in College Station every day.
