I like to make fun of aggy as much as the next guy, but perfect attendance at the learning center is an impressive achievement. You don’t get that for just showing up.

Yeah, I don't mean to be a dick or anything, but this sounds like some award I'd give to one of my 1st grade distant learners.

Under the College of Architecture? That's an odd one.

Architects are designers and learn a lot of design software.  It's a great degree that has a lot of versatility, even if architecture isn't the choice.

I have tons of respect for Architecture and Visual Design, that setup just feels like having Geology as a major in the College of Physics because they're both kinds of science.

Tex beat me to it.  It's like learning how to do a card trick and getting a pass in organic chemistry.

Where the fuck does this “Hollywood” nickname come from? It makes sense for Marquise Brown, he literally came from Hollywood, FL...this dude is from Tomball

If I had to guess, they can't create a college of art like most schools (because they're not a flagship, they're a trade school), so they had to lump it under the closest "practical" equivalent.

Aggie 247 / Tarp / Monday morning notes (updated)

(In which, Connor Blumrick is errybody.)

Spoiler

Monday morning notes (updated)

Tarp

Texas A&M held its first scrimmage of fall camp on Saturday. Here's some items from the scrimmage as well as the remainder of fall camp.

- Most of the injuries right now are concentrated among the skill guys on both sides of the ball and especially at receiver. There's a feeling that they missed spring practice moreso than the bigger people on the team from a conditioning standpoint. It's also not unusual for those guys to have a lot of soft tissue injuries at this point of fall camp or for people to be held out as a precautionary measure.

- The receiving corps consisted of Jalen Preston at the X, Hezekiah Jones at the slot, and Caleb Chapman at the Z. Preston has been buried behind Jhamon Ausbon during his career at the X and the time he's getting there right now might be finally giving him a chance to show what he can do.

- Chapman has been solid at the Z. Jones reportedly had several catches during the scrimmage including a touchdown. Kam Brown could be the swing man and enable Jones to move outside to the Z which would make the Aggies much faster on the flanks.

- Quarterback Kellen Mond is more decisive and confident and is throwing the ball well. He was supposedly productive even though he was missing most of his top projected targets.

- Running back Isaiah Spiller has lost some weight and is moving much better than he did last season. Another back who has been looking good is Earnest Crownover who could complement Spiller from a depth standpoint in terms of the big back role in the Aggies' offense as a whole as well as their 21 personnel sets. He is a very physical runner,

- Although A&M fans have every right to be excited about freshmen such as Devon Achane and Demond Demas, pound for pound the team's best offensive player is Ainias Smith. He's going to get the ball in every way imaginable (including returns) and will give the Aggies the explosiveness they were missing most of last season.

- Rddshirt frosh Caden Davis is beginning to set himself apart in winning the role as the kickoff specialist (in place of Braden Mann) but it's not been finalized yet.

- Sophomore Brian Williams is getting more mention at safety than he has been. Williams struggled last season as a freshman despite the fact that he appeared to be among the most ready (at least coming off of his high school career) of anyone to contribute as anyone in the class. He's dropped some weight and in the process is moving more like someone at the back end of the defense should.

- Sophomore Erick Young has been a solid addition at the nickel spot, and has freed up some of the other players who could play there to fill in at cornerback. You need coverage abilities there moreso than most people expect and he fits in with regard to the fact that he previously played cornerback in high school.

- Leon O'Neal has solidified himself as Demani Richardson's sidekick at the safety positions.

- Senior Travon Fuller has been having a solid camp at cornerback. With Elijah Blades opting out A&M doesn't have a lot of experience there and he's one of the old hands at the position.

- The only reason that freshman Smart Chibuzo was running with the ones at center (in the video that was released by A&M) was because of injuries at the position. Ryan McCollum has been a solid performer there so far and Luke Matthews is the Aggies' sixth offensive lineman.

- Senior Aaron Hansford has been very good among the linebacking corps. He's gotten more comfortable in being able to recognize formations and plays and so he's playing faster than ever as opposed to being a guy who makes plays because he can run.

- Among the freshman pass rushers, Donnell Harris has looked really good for his size but he's got to put on some weight. Once he does that, he should be a difference maker coming off of the edge.

- Frosh corner Jaylon Jones is going to be really, really good...and he's already looking like someone who's a veteran college football player.

- Frosh safety Antonio Johnson is considered to be future difference maker on the back end.

- The defensive line has been outperforming the offensive line and that continued in Saturday's scrimmage. However, the offensive line lacks the athletic pedigree of the defensive side of the ball and is not a deep group (which particularly shows up when when any OLs are missing).

- Edgerrin Cooper remains a star in the making at linebacker. His closing speed can't be duplicated in the group and he is a smart player beyond his years.

- If you're looking for a tight end candidate to step up, junior Connor Blumrick has been moved over there since the Aggies have been struck by inuries at the position and had a couple of TD catches this weekend.

- A&M has one more scrimmage this upcoming weekend and after that they'll be moving towards setting up a definitive two deep, special teams, and the travel squad.

Damn, they may never lose again!  Jimbo’s got them to zero weaknesses in just a couple years!

No, that’s not correct. Most of the reports of guys that are FUTURE stars once they gain weight, lose weight, get experience, or the player in front of them moves on.
so aggy will be unbeatable in just a couple of seasons. As always.

Aggie 247 / Jeff Tarpley / Ten thoughts with 10 days left in Texas A&M's fall camp

Spoiler

Ten thoughts with 10 days left in Texas A&M's fall camp
JEFF TARPLEY

Texas A&M is slated to begin the 2020 football season on September 26 against Vanderbilt which means that they will begin game week preparations around September 20. That means that there are about ten days left in the Aggies' fall camp which should include one more scrimmage this upcoming weekend. After that, A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher and his staff will start putting together a depth chart and finally determine who is best suited to be on the 65 man travel squad for road games.

A&M has already had several workouts and one scrimmage so far and the team has benefitted from both a lack of opt outs and positive tests which has enabled them to weather any injuries that have come their way (unlike a lot of college football programs). Here's a look at where we stand with about ten days remaining in fall camp.

QUARTERBACK
It's one thing for senior Kellen Mond to communicate with just a few people like he previously; now, he's more communicative with the entire team and they all are more likely to be on the same page when it comes to operating the offense. As a result, even though Mond has been missing some targets due to injury as he normally does at this time of the year, you're hearing that the passing game isn't struggling. On the contrary, it's been efficient and there are fewer practices where things on that side of the ball go completely south. Most of his teammates feel like he's ready to take them to the next level because he's more confident around them (as opposed to the media) but we'll still need confirmation of that when the Aggies take on Alabama and Florida early in the year.

RUNNING BACK
This is the most underrated area of concern on the team going into the season primarily because there wasn't a lot of depth here. There were a lot of newcomers and some of them needed to step up if the Aggies were going to be able to run two back sets or simply maintain a functional rushing attack if people started dropping for whatever reason. Isaiah Spiller has had better burst due to the fact that he shed some weight going into camp and Ainias Smith has contributed big plays with his explosiveness. In fact, Smith is one of those guys that (like Jalen Wydermyer) needs to be more on the field as much as possible. Junior college transfer Earnest Crownover is physically developed and he has been a pleasant surprise as a runner in addition to being a quality blocker. Devon Achane is more of a role player at this point of his career and they're going to have to use him selectively in order to keep him healthy.

WIDEOUTS
There's always people sitting out fall camp at this position dating back to the Kevin Sumlin days and usually that's meant that while the backups get more time on the field that the passing game suffers. This year has been a different story. This is the fastest group of wideouts that A&M has had since the 2016 and 2017 seasons when Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds could generate big plays down the field and near the line of scrimmage and that wouldn't have been possible without some players leaving the program after the 2019 season and others taking time off during this fall camp. A&M's inability to generate chunk plays in the passing game has been an issue during the first two seasons of Jimbo Fishers' reign but that should be less of a problem going forward.

TIGHT END
A&M's personnel is now much more restricted at the position than it was just over a week ago which means that you'll probably be seeing fewer 12 personnel groupings than what fans originally hoped for. However, this means even more playing time for sophomore Jalen Wydermyer which is a good thing. With him on the field, A&M now has far better ability to get downfield in the passing game and generate big plays after the catch. Nonetheless, the Aggies have to be more flexible in their personnel groupings which means more of what we saw last season (11 personnel and 10 personnel with Wydermyer in the slot). There's also still no talk right now of moving Fadil Diggs from defensive end to this side of the ball because A&M should be able to work around what's going at this position via Wydermyer as well as the personnel they have elsewhere.

OFFENSIVE LINE
This is the one area of the offense that things could get critical in a hurry if there are any injuries or positive tests. The Aggies like their top six players here which include Luke Matthews coming off of the bench and the ability to slide Kenyon Green from the interior to the outside if one of the tackles goes down. Beyond that, A&M is counting on a bunch of people that don't have a lot of experience. However, keep in mind that most college programs are in the same boat and that these groups are typically only as strong as their weakest link.

DEFENSIVE TACKLE
The deepest group in the program. A&M's offensive line is getting a workout going against these guys. There's days when someone at the position has to sit out for whatever reason and it doesn't matter...they just reload and keep coming. Assistant coach Elijah Robinson not only recruits well but also develops his charges. They're going to be a handful this season for everyone on the schedule and they're capable to taking over a game in the right circumstances and winning it for A&M.

DEFENSIVE END
Micheal Clemons will be a fixture here because he can both set the edge and come off of it as a pass rusher. Beyond that, the group has added talent but they lack the experienced, productive depth of the defensive tackles (although this group has still been productive). Donell Harris has stood out early because of his burst off of the edge much like Von Miller did when he was a freshman. However, like Miller, Harris needs to put on more weight before he can be an every down contributor or even be someone that you're going to use as a situational rusher and expect some pass rush out of him.

LINEBACKERS
People on campus really like these guys. Not only does A&M have one of the better starting duos in the league in Buddy Johnson and Anthony Hines but depth is considered to be very good as well. Aaron Hansford, Tarian Lee, and Edgerrin Cooper have had good camps behind the starters. Cooper isn't just considered a future starter but a future star as well. He's getting as much discussion as anyone in the 2020 recruiting class but unlike some of them his path to significant playing is blocked at this point in time...but maybe not beyond this season.

CORNERS
Jaylon Jones and Myles Jones are perhaps the most discussed players at the position and with Elijah Blades opting out as of right now they're a good bet to be the starters. Beyond this, there's less depth at this spot than you might think with some players slated to find time at nickel also having to work here. It's actually helped that A&M has some former corners on the roster to help out here but that's not necessarily their highest and best use at this stage of their careers.

SAFETY
Demani Richardson and Leon O'Neal (ducking as I type this) are slated to be the starters. Depth is considered to be more solid than first presumed as you not only have an experienced hand in Keldrick Carper (yes, I know he's not he's not Kendrick but our spell check doesn't) but sophomore Brian Williams and freshman Antonio Johnson have been solid as well. Johnson really adds a different dimension as a deep safety.

SPECIAL TEAMS
Things have gone smoothly here with the Aggies seamlessly working new personnel into the mix. Look for Caden Davis to eventually emerge as Braden Mann's replacement on kickoffs. In addition, it helps that A&M has more experienced depth than ever on protection and coverage units and you should see this as a difference making factor in a couple of games at some point during the season.
