King's recruitment a reminder that A&M will battle under Fisher

It's late Friday morning, and Longview, Texas, 4-star quarterback Haynes King is still uncommitted.

Will he decide where he'll play college football by the end of Friday? Maybe in the afternoon or early evening?

Or ... will he just wait until later in the summer?
Cue the suspense music.

247Sports' Gabe Brooks and Charles Power, in addition to GigEm247, have been following King's moves of the past few hours thoroughly, and one thing remains to be consistent -- King's simply not ready to make a decision. He has four schools on his list -- Texas A&M, Tennessee, Auburn and Duke -- and all four could end up winning over the stud dual-threat quarterback.

King's recruiting process in the last couple of weeks has been a booming national topic of discussion, as he is the nation's top-ranked uncommitted quarterback. The Elite 11 Finals will run today through Sunday in Frisco, Texas, and originally, he was supposed to have a decision made before check-in, which is set for around midday Friday.

What have we learned from any of this? Big picture, it re-establishes Texas A&M as a regular contender for some of the nation's best talent, and it reminds Aggie recruiting fans of that. A slightly smaller picture, it reiterates just how good Jimbo Fisher and the coaching staff can be when they put on their full-court press in going after a prized target.

A friendly reminder: King has 28 reported offers. According to his 247Sports profile page, Texas A&M was the second-to-last school to offer back on May 1. Only Purdue offered later, on May 14. Tennessee offered King back in January, and he took an unofficial visit to Knoxville in March. Duke offered King in April.

Texas A&M may have come late to the party, but it managed to get one of four big dances, so to speak, in an official visit. King's first official was to College Station the weekend of May 31. He then officially visited Tennessee the following weekend and Auburn the weekend after that. Duke got a midweek official visit June 19-21.

Credit Fisher, offensive coordinator Darrell Dickey and every other coach involved in King's process. The Aggies weren't a blip on the recruiting radar earlier in the spring. While at the Dallas stop of the Under Armour All-America Camp Series in February, King told GigEm247 that he, at the time, had not heard much from Texas A&M but was keeping all of his options open.

King then added that in looking for a winning program, he wanted to be at a place where there is a "consistency of the coaching staff" and a place where he can develop as a quarterback. King also spoke about how he wanted to be at a degree where, academically, he could be set.

And here we are today. Texas A&M can check all of King's boxes, as well as win the proximity argument against the other three schools. That said, Duke is an academically recognized institution who also just had a high first-round draft pick in quarterback Daniel Jones. Tennessee arguably has built the longest relationship with King, and Auburn just watched quarterback Jarrett Stidham get selected by the New England Patriots to potentially become the successor to Tom Brady.

Still, King's recruitment brings back what Fisher said after the 2018 signing period. He spoke of how he expects to compete for a top-three finish every year with his recruiting classes. He and his staff would go after the biggest fish -- and land a few of them. For many Aggie recruiting fans, the results since then have been a refreshing site.

Adding King to the 2020 class would be just another example of what Fisher spoke about. King is ranked the nation's No. 2 dual-threat quarterback and No. 32 player overall in the 2020 class by 247Sports. He threw for nearly 3,900 yards and 42 touchdowns, rushed for nearly 700 yards and eight touchdowns, showed that he can consistently run the 40-yard dash in 4.5 seconds and, back in December, led Longview High School to a UIL Class 6A Division II championship and an undefeated 16-0 record.

King's a big fish, and Texas A&M is that close to having another success story for its recruiting class. Contrary to what the naysayers believe, that says something.

As we all continue to tune in to the uber-suspenseful episode that has become King's recruitment, let the Texas A&M fan base be reminded of just how impactful this recruitment has become. Three months ago, King's best options to stay in Texas were with Baylor and TCU, which would have been solid places for him to develop under highly respected coaches in Matt Rhule and Gary Patterson, respectively.

But Texas A&M has shown once again that it can up its recruiting game under Fisher -- and the Aggies hope to ultimately close the deal soon on one of the country's most coveted targets

Sounds like aggy still has to wait - "I'm a little shocked any kid would have this much trouble making a decision just based on what we have to offer."

That’s a very good point. I can’t believe King hasn’t already committed to fake ut.

So, the fact that aggy is having to sweat out a decision from the third or fourth guy on their board in the middle of the summer, even though the elite schools all got commitments from elite quarterbacks several months ago, is proof that "aggy will battle it out under Fisher".

Proof aggy can spin forever without hurling, that's all this really is.

I hope his delay forces aggie to make Leal/Demas/Richardson like accommodations. In this case since the trainer and parent is also a well known HS coach it would be very difficult for aggie to rest easy.

King is not on the market. $EC tactics will not work

King's a big fish

He's a big fish that the big regional powers passed on. Texas, OU, and LSU all looked elsewhere. Yes, he's a damn good QB but let's be clear about where he is in the pecking order.

FWIW, I truly think he should be looking at Duke. Far better school. Far better coaching.

some of y'all really need to make up your minds as to how bad we suck at everything, versus running the nation's most vast and complex pay-for-prospect scheme that stretches coast to coast.

and most of you need jesus.

True, but it's better than needing a jizz jar.

Coming on a Texas board to tell us what we "need" to do is precious coming from someone who treats a dog like she is Jesus.

This. A QB turning down a full ride at Duke and a chance to play under Cutcliffe for aggy (or Tennessee or Auburn for that matter) is a... Questionable decision.

Hey he’s the best pass thrower in the class...and they didn’t offer him until May.  They were previously chasing lesser talents. It’s chess of some high dimension.

I know you stupid fucking gomers love a goddamn conspiracy because: cult.  It's not complex and it's not a fucking secret.

1. You have 2 coaches who were brought in specifically for this in Bradley Dale Peveto and Dameyune Craig. You don't bring either of these jackasses in to "coach 'em up" and you don't bring them in to be recruiting assassins. You bring them in because you don't have a systemic avenue (ie. riverboat casinos where players play blackjack vs. dealers playing face-up, etc ...) so you bring them in to wrangle the small pocket of jocksniffing boosters and keep them from blowing the whole thing up by being idiots.

2. Adidas is funneling players to A&M, Tennessee, and Nebraska via it's paid trainers (ie. Ro Simon, Jamal Lewis, etc ). This isn't new, we've seen Nike do this at Oregon and we've seen it countless ways in AAU and select baseball (certain select orgs receiving very lucrative deals to be sponsored by (Under Armor, Marucci, etc) -- which ensures their players WILL visit School X but will NOT visit School Y). Did you note the number of lower ranked players at the Adidas/Rivals 5 star challenge that also happened to be Tennessee and Aggy OOS targets? Did you note how many of those have 1 or more trainers, including some that live 1000s of miles away, and that those trainers are all backed by Adidas? This is the furthest thing from complex.

Are you sure about Tennessee? They signed a deal with Nike a few years ago.

This shit. This shit right here is my fucking favorite. It's also peak Tarp. The guy, as oftentimes as he tries to be and sometimes succeeds in being the most rational aTm fan on that board, his fucking hatred of Texas will always rear is it's fucking head and he will revert to his natural state of I Hate Texas Down To My Very Piss and Bones and can't stand saying anything positive about us. It's fucking as delicious to view as it is disturbing in the prism of humanity.

Another poster pointed out that Majors HAS an OU offer. Lets take this a fucking step further. Not only does he have an OU offer, but he also has a fucking Okie Lite offer. And in a page that hasn't been updated in a spell, who is listed as Jake's main recruiter at OSU? Why, could it still be listed as one Josh Henson? If you guessed yes, you get a big, wet motherfucking Hans Landa ThatsABingo.gif.

Oklahoma State

Visit:-Offer:YesRoster Outlook:6 On Roster, 2 Commits

Now, just for the fun of being a Texas fan, and because we're able to, I don't know, utilize critical thinking skills...lets go ahead and take a look at when Jake Majors committed to Texas. Why, it's January 24th, 2019? Who wants to guess when Henson was hired to be the coach at Texas aTm? Could it be February 9th, and he knew from recruiting him at OSU that he was locked into Texas and it was a waste of time? That is correct AnthonyKiedasPointBreak.Gif. But you know, lets just pretend neither of those guys knows who Jake Majors is and neither of them ever offered Jake. Because, you know, we just ran out of time at fucking being adults.

These fucking people and the motherfucking lies they tell themselves are downright scary, people.

Tarp did not post that bs.  A poster did.

Honestly I'm more surprised you didn't call Tarp out on "Hand coached in the SEC so he should know what he's doing"

I mean, I fucking laughed out loud in my car when I read it. Literally guffawing in the parking lot of my office like a goddamn lunatic. But we see that shit, what, 2-3 times a day at this point?

Drew Sanders? Or is he thought to be a LB?

One of his given reasons for flipping to Bama from OU was his preference for defense: https://247sports.com/Article/Alabama-Football-Recruiting-Drew-Sanders-goes-in-depth-on-flipping-from-Oklahoma-committing-to-Tide--131654864/

As for changing up from Oklahoma, a program Sanders has been committed to for quite some time, Sanders cites the fact that the SEC is more of a defensive conference than the Big 12 for him to excel at outside linebacker, a position he prefers over tight end.

FRISCO, Texas - Longview (Texas) High Top247 quarterback Haynes King told his four finalists he’d have a college decision on Wednesday. It’s obviously Friday afternoon now and 247Sports top-ranked uncommitted quarterback arrived at the Elite 11 Finals yet to pull the trigger on Auburn, Duke, Tennessee or Texas A&M.

“It just didn’t happen,” King said. “I’m still trying to dig for that, which school is going to separate from the others and when I find it will probably make my decision then and let all the coaches know.”

King said if a “clue” comes while he’s at Elite 11 he’ll end the process then.

“It’s a lot of persuasion at this point,” said King. “Every time I get off the phone with a coach, after a visit, I try to sit down and talk with my dad and see what’s the best situation and best option to do now and we really haven’t figured it out yet. It’s going to continue being a mystery deal.”

Ranked by the Top247 as the country’s No. 2 dual-threat passer and No. 32 prospect overall, the 6-foot-2 1/2, 185-pound King took his official to Texas A&M on May 31, followed by trips to Tennessee, Auburn and Duke in consecutive weekends.

“I took those four official visits this month, and right now as both of them, all four of them have their differences,” King said. “Right now I’m trying to find the best situation for me and my family. I haven’t yet found it in my mind because all four of those schools are really good schools.

“My mind was still kind of a blur before I took (the officials) and now I got to see new things and see more of the schools and I felt like I can thrive in that community of all four of them.”

Auburn was first from this foursome to offer.

“Coach Malzahn, he’s pretty good," King said. "He’s a bit offensive minded. In the past it showed when they have a great triggerman, it’s been able to show they compete with the best and beat the best.

King also feels close with offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham.

“Before he was at Memphis and we developed a relationship when he was at Memphis and he moved to Auburn and it blew up from there. We talk pretty much every week.”

Tennessee came in after the Tigers.

“They’re somewhat trying to rebuild that program to get better and bring it back to what it was,” King said. “They are providing a great atmosphere for that. They’re pushing towards that. They have a great coaching staff to do that. They’re recruiting great players to put people in that position as well.”

Vols head coach Jeremy Pruitt and offensive coordinator Jim Chaney have made an impression on King.

“Everywhere they’ve been they’ve pretty much proven to do well and succeed to that point,” King said. “Both of them they developed a relationship with me that I feel comfortable I can do the best I can do. They’ll coach you hard. They’ll do whatever they can do to get you in that position to succeed on that level.”

The opportunity to develop under David Cutcliffe’s eye attracts King to Duke.

“He’s had a proven track record on that,” King said. “He’s pretty grounded too. What he does at the quarterback position will put you in a great situation to succeed. It’s not one offense, this is how I’m going to do it. He plays to the quarterback’s strength. He definitely knows a lot about the game. He adjusts on that and he’s one of the best quarterback coaches in the country.”

Jimbo Fisher and Texas A&M’s offer in May immediately put them near the top of the list.

“Coach Fisher is pretty much the same way,” King said comparing him to Cutcliffe. “He’s proven on that. He’s coached people like Jamies Winston, Matt Flynn, he’s put many people in the NFL. He runs a pro-style offense, that’s what I’m running right now at my school. I feel comfortable in that kind of offense. So does Tennessee, they run a pro-style, Duke somewhat runs a pro-style, because our offense does so much, even a little RPO, zone read, do a little quarterback power, I fit into all those offenses well because we’re so diverse.

“Other than that, A&M has had good recruiting classes the past couple years so they’re going to put good players around me. They have good resources there too. They’re going to set you up for life.”

Playing for his father, King led Longview to a 16-0 season last fall en route to a state championship, throwing for 3,877 yards and 42 touchdowns with just four interceptions. The talented athlete also ran for 664 yards and eight more scores.

From the interview alone it seems like it may be Tennessee
