Under Armour Dallas: VIP recruiting news and notes

VIP ByDAMON SAYLES 18 minutes ago

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Under Armour All-America Camp Series made a stop in the Dallas area on Sunday, hosting a multitude of athletes from Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas. Martin High School, in addition, saw several athletes who have been affiliated with Texas A&M, whether its via offers or by way of a mutual interest.

Here are a few notes from Sunday's action:

-- Lancaster, Texas, 4-star cornerback Lorando Johnson spoke in depth about his recruiting process, first acknowledging that his original top three of Texas A&M, LSU and Arkansas is no longer on the table. While those three schools are still high on his list -- and he said all three most likely will get an official visit -- he's looking at schools like TCU, Baylor and Ohio State, as well. Johnson spoke highly of Texas A&M and said he's planning on making it to College Station for the spring game in April.

-- Dallas Carter 4-star defensive tackle Branard Wright is one of the biggest prizes of the 2020 recruiting cycle in Texas. He measured in at 6-foot-3 and 300 pounds, and he spoke about narrowing his choices down "deep in the spring," possibly April. He likes Texas A&M because of defensive tackles coach Elijah Robinson, and he added that while some may think he's an LSU lean, that isn't 100 percent accurate. He said Texas A&M not only is in hunt but also will get an official visit. Schools like Florida, Texas, Alabama, Florida State and Arkansas, as well as LSU, are in the mix along with the Aggies.

-- Little Elm, Texas, 3-star cornerback Ryan Watts picked up a Texas A&M offer on Feb. 3, the same day as the Aggies' Super Bowl get-together. He mentioned that Texas A&M, Oklahoma and Texas are the three schools recruiting him the hardest. He is looking at the weekend of April 12 for an official visit to Oklahoma. That's the weekend of Oklahoma's spring game. He added that he plans on taking an unofficial visit to Arkansas on March 30.

9073388.jpg?fit=bounds&crop=620:320,offset-y0.50&width=620&height=320(Photo: Damon Sayles, 247Sports)

-- Aggie fans received not-so-great news when Duncanville, Texas, 4-star Chris Thompson Jr. announced that Texas is his top in-state school. That may be news to some, but consider the fact that Thompson is coached at Duncanville by Reginald Samples -- who is the father of Ra'Shaad Samples, the assistant receivers coach at Texas. While Texas leads as his in-state choice, that doesn't mean he'll necessarily stay in state. He added that Clemson and LSU are two schools very much alive in his recruiting process.

-- Aggie fans also should bypass on the idea of Prosper, Texas, offensive tackle Jake Majors coming to College Station. The 4-star lineman has been committed to Texas since Jan. 24 and said he's "100 percent solid" with the Longhorns. Majors, who measured in a 6-foot-3 and 290 pounds, added that schools like Stanford and USC were still keeping close tabs on him.

-- With a state championship now on his resume, Longview, Texas, dual-threat quarterback Haynes King said he has heard from schools such as Baylor, TCU, Arkansas and Tennessee. King said he hasn't heard much from Texas A&M but is keeping all of his recruiting options open. He's looking for a place where there is a "consistency of the coaching staff" and a place where he can develop as a quarterback. He also wanted to be academically set with a quality degree.

-- One of the most impressive-looking athletes of Sunday was defensive end Blayne Toll out of Hazen, Arkansas. Ranked the No. 2 player in the state of Arkansas, Toll is a chiseled 6-foot-5, 239-pound athlete who bench presses 375 pounds. He said he wants to go to college as a defensive end but wouldn't overlook the idea of playing tight end. Arkansas is a major contender in Toll's process, but Tennessee is definitely a team to watch. He said he hasn't heard from Texas A&M.

-- Sachse, Texas, 3-star Myles Nash isn't the biggest athlete, but his explosiveness makes him a player to watch. The 5-foot-6, 171-pound all-purpose back has offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State and Illinois State, and he's been in contact with Baylor. Nash is a shifty scatback who can also line up in the slot and serve as a matchup problem with his quick twitch and cutting ability.

-- Carthage, Texas, 3-star offensive tackle Ty'Kieast Crawford, on the surface, already looks like a college offensive lineman. The Baylor commit is 6-foot-5 and 318 pounds, and while he's strong with his pledge, he said schools like TCU, Arkansas, Tennessee and Missouri have been heavily recruiting him. Crawford said he hasn't heard much from Texas A&M but will always keep the door open to hear from programs. Crawford has been committed to Baylor since July 29.

-- The Colony, Texas, athlete Myles Pricecan play running back, wide receiver or cornerback at the next level. The 3-star talent has been in touch with Texas A&M, but the Aggies have yet to offer. Price has 11 reported offers, which includes Texas Tech, Washington State, SMU and Arkansas State. Price recorded 57 catches for 906 yards, rushed 62 times for 661 yards and accounted for 24 total touchdowns.

-- 2020 receiver Keith Miller, also of The Colony, has a dozen reported offers and said he is hearing mostly from Washington State, Colorado, Kansas, Texas Tech and Ole Miss. At 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, Miller is an intriguing player who Texas A&M hasn't offered but has shown some interest in the past. He's looking to play at a school where he has a solid bond with the coaching staff, as well as a school with a good architecture program.

-- Denton (Texas) Ryan 2021 Ja'Tavion Sanders is a do-it-all athlete. At the Under Armour event, he lined up as a tight end and made several nice plays. Some think he'll make an even better defensive end at the next number. At nearly 6-foot-4 and 220 pounds, Sanders said Texas A&M is a school he's hearing from a lot. Texas and Oklahoma also are in the mix, but the Aggies can score big with Sanders, a versatile athlete with a very high ceiling.

-- Duncanville, Texas, 2021 offensive tackle Savion Byrd caught the attention of multiple media members with his size and play. He measured in at 6-foot-5 and 265 pounds and is planning on lining up at left tackle when he arrives at his college of choice. Byrd nearly has 20 reported offers, but he said SMU is a school that has been heavily on him as of late. Byrd added that he has interest in LSU.

-- Copperas Cove, Texas, 2021 offensive tackle McKenzie Agnello is doing all of the right things to prepare for college football. For starters, he's slimmed down from 317 pounds to 289 pounds and is looking to build muscle to where he's back at 300 pounds in time for his junior season. Agnello, who stands 6-foot-3, said he's heard some from Texas A&M, as well as Texas and TCU, but he's heard mostly from Texas Tech as of late.

-- Fort Worth All Saints Episcopal offensive tackle Tommy Brockermeyerwas one of two 2020 Future 50 invitees -- the other being Aledo, Texas, 2021 slot receiver JoJo Earle. Brockermeyer said he's been hearing mostly from Texas, TCU and Michigan as of late. He did say he's heard from Texas A&M, but he described it as a "little bit." Brockermeyer said he's looking to play for a team "that produces and develops NFL linemen

The addition of this line is so pathetic. It’s peak Aggy

I hope A&M keeps him. Rather have him play for those clowns than play for OU.

I mean I’d rather he end up elsewhere but OU will get good linemen no matter what and Aki ain’t that special.  Plus, now  aggy’s staring down the barrel at taking 1 good OL in two classes, so we have that to laugh at.

This would be consistent with him being the visitor last week who wanted to flip but whose commitment we wouldn't take. Being that he just visited UT, you'd think we'd get at least a mention if he wasn't the one who was spurned.

Yeah, it was definitely him. A&M's best OL commit couldn't even be the 4th or 5th best take in our class.

That majors Wright tape isn’t as indicative as they think it is. I expect both players to put on weight over he next several years which will make Wright less athletic and Majors stronger.

Id be much more nervous about his tape if it showed him getting beat with Wright blowing past him or showed bad feet.

Great feet and athletic ability aren't a prerequisite for this rock head.  Being able to anchor as a 17year old in a camp against a guy who out weighs you by 40lbs is what we're looking for.

I dont know if Majors is gonna be Aundrae McGaskey or Justin Blalock but I'll take frame and athletic ability and feet all day as a baseline.

They better have serious concerns about whether or not Jimbo can evaluate and develop OL because I'm not sure he can.

Are you responding to a Daddy98 evaluation?

Based on the updates posted in the Texas recruiting thread lately, it seems that Texas and ou and LSU are ahead of aggy on a lot of state of Texas kids.

Maybe all 3 finish ahead of aggy again.

I know they’ve already been hinting at it, but pretty soon they may need to scuttle this class and jump aboard the 2021 class if they don’t start landing some OOS talent this spring and summer.

Ah yes, the real point of the post. Make it seem like they get a guy better than the one they just lost to us. And writing like he knows anything at all about evaluating talent. What a putz.

Dude.  He's breaking down the tape.  He seen it.

GD, 78Eagle is special.  Lulz.  Taxslayer bowl is "prestigious".   Texas lucked into Sugar Bowl and would suffer in the SEC despite running over Georgia which he didn't mention.  Mic drop.

Edit: not to mention our SOS was higher last year.  It would be easier to get to 10 wins in the SEC West than where we are.  They play 3 high school teams every year OOC plus a slew of overrated conference games.  They only have 4 real games per year.

If I was aggy, I’d be totally less worried about what Texas is doing and focus on their secw competition.  As long as they play 3-5 fiddle over there, they will be mired in mediocrity forever.....oh wait!  Stupid aggy.

Exactly.  You answered your own question there.  They celebrate when Bama and LSU beat us out for a prospect.  Mouth breathing window lickers.  The lot of them.

The irony is simply lost on them when they bitch about how Texas finished ahead of them in the rankings, but puff out their chests that the SEC had 11 teams in the Top 25 of said rankings.

That's because our rankings aren't REAL, they're fabrications by the biased services. Duh.

But because of the Texas Sugar Bowl win, they hyped themselves into beating Georgia this year.  Let's see what happens when reality hits.

Georgia is gonna be really pissed, playing a team with "Texas" in it's title.  Being made fun of for several months will build up to an aggy ass-whipping....gee, I can hardly wait.

I’m pretty sure that they’ve worked it out that any bowl that has an sec tie in is a prestigious bowl, by virtue of the sec choosing to do business with it.

There may also be a subsection where within it states that any bowl that takes place within the traditional Deep South footprint of the sec is also prestigious, that gets invoked if/when the sec has more bowl eligible teams than tie ins.

You forgot subsection IV, clause F: all Prestigious Bowls by the definitions set forth above in prior articles and subsections will be rendered moot if a participant in said bowl is The University of Texas.

Thus, last years sugar bowl wasn't shit.
