Do you condone what Wilson did?

Not sucker punching Buchvevich while the latter was face down on the ice (after running the Caps goalie in the crease, BTW).  But, Panerin got exactly what one might expect when he jumped into the fray and went after Wilson.  Yapping Chihuahuas should avoid big dogs.

Last night, NYR resident tough guy, Smith, went after Wilson and got his clock cleaned, too … as did the NYR clowns in four of the other bouts.  Caps Hagelin scuffle was a dancing draw.  After that the NYR resorted to the sticks and slashed Wilson and Oshie (twice), and Buchnevich closed out their weak shit when he left his feet to cross check Mantha across the bridge of the nose.

No doubt, Wilson is easily provoked and has crossed the line before.  But, not this time.  He defended himself and the NHL seemed to agree that the 16 minutes in penalties doled out to him was appropriate.  The $5K was for the Buchnevich punch.  Maybe Panerin learned a lesson.

P.S.  NHL darling Sydney Crosby got into a similar scrap the same night and face planted his opponent without penalty.

You say you don't condone it in the first half sentence but then you spend the rest of your post rationalizing it.  None of the other shit happens without Wilson's bullshit cheap shot.  (And I'm no Rangers fan -- just know a cheap shot artist when I see one.)

Wilson got 16 minutes for his shenanigans with Buchnevich.  Upon review, the NHL deemed that was a cheap shot and took $5K.  The Panerin incident was considered incidental to the game of hockey.

NYR didn’t agree, decided to take care of it themselves, and got their clocks cleaned .. physically, on the scoreboard, and as an organization with a rather hefty fine.

I have no issues with the Caps defending themselves when the Rangers came out and dropped gloves last night.  (I also think the Rangers had to do *something* or be considered pussies by the rest of the league -- the later slashing and highsticking stuff by Buchnevich crossed the line, though, and warranted the misconduct and penalties even though I can understand why he was pissed off.)

But I tend to agree with the Rangers that Wilson should have been suspended in addition to being fined.  Throwing outright punches at the back of a guy's head when he's down on the ice is pretty bad and a bitch move, IMO.

juxtaposing wilson's $5k with the rangers $250k is a terrible fucking look. and i'm not a fan of either team. but it seemed obvious to me that the rangers had to come out swinging. wilson is a cheap shot artist, who should have earned at least a couple games off. it's not like this is his first rodeo of dirty ass play.

wasn't sure who to root for, but that might be a good bet, mostly for Jumbo Joe

The Leafs have been my Eastern Conference team since the late 90's/early 00's. Best uniform in sports (the blues) and haven't won a Cup since the '60's.

What a great day of hockey.  And I'm not referring to the Flames-Canucks game.

I didn't get to watch too much but the first three playoff games go into overtime and the finale was an incredible 5-4 game decided with about 90 seconds left in regulation.

Best postseason in sports and it's not even close. Great to see fans back in the buildings too.

Can somebody tell me why the Toronto-Montreal series doesn't get started until Thursday night?

yeah, which is why it's kinda gullshit (gonna leave that typo) that he won. He played 6 seasons in the KHL before coming here.

edit: Kaprizov is only 24.

That makes better sense. 34 yr old rookies with his skill gotta be damn near non existent.

Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died after falling and hitting his head on concrete in a July Fourth fireworks-related accident, police in Novi, Michigan, said Monday. Kivlenieks was 24.

Lt. Jason Meier of the Novi Police Department said that the fire department and EMTs arrived at a private home at 10:13 p.m. local time on Sunday.

"There appears to have been a fireworks malfunction, which caused a group of people to flee from the hot tub, including the deceased, who slipped and hit his head on the concrete," Meier told ESPN on Monday.

According to Meier, a mortar-style firework tilted slightly, which caused a fire. Responders took 4 minutes and 38 seconds to arrive after receiving a 911 call. Kivlenieks was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

There is an autopsy scheduled for Monday, but Meier said the investigation at this point is surrounding a "slip and fall" accident.

Kivlenieks started in two games for the Blue Jackets this past season and had recently played for Latvia at the IIHF World Championships. He played in eight total games in his NHL career and was expected to compete for more playing time next season.

Update. Following autopsy, it wasn’t a fall — it was a hit to the chest by the firework.

A medical examiner in Michigan says an autopsy has determined that Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast, and not a fall, as authorities previously reported.

Police in Novi, Michigan, said the mortar-style firework tilted slightly and started to fire toward people nearby Sunday night. The 24-year-old Kivlenieks was in a hot tub and tried to get clear with several other people, police Lt. Jason Meier said.

Meier said that the fire department and EMTs arrived at a private home at 10:13 p.m. local time on Sunday.

Responders took 4 minutes and 38 seconds to arrive after receiving a 911 call. Kivlenieks was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The Oakland County Medical Examiner's office reported preliminary autopsy results Monday afternoon.

Prior to the autopsy, police said Kivlenieks was believed to have slipped and hit his head on concrete while running from a malfunctioning firework.

"At the moment, we're pretty certain this was a tragic accident," Meier said.

Kivlenieks started in two games for the Blue Jackets this past season and had recently played for Latvia at the IIHF World Championships. He played in eight total games in his NHL career and was expected to compete for more playing time next season.

"We are shocked and saddened by the loss of Matiss Kivlenieks, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his mother, Astrida, his family and friends during this devastating time," Blue Jackets president of hockey operations John Davidson said in a statement. "Kivi was an outstanding young man who greeted every day and everyone with a smile and the impact he had during his four years with our organization will not be forgotten."

"One thing I loved and appreciated about him was he had a great smile and always was in a good mood," former Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno told ESPN's Emily Kaplan in a text message. "I know it's cliché, but that's exactly the kind of guy he was. Just enjoying his life as a 24-year-old living out his dream and you could tell he didn't take one day for granted, which makes this tragedy even more hard to bear. Praying for his family and all of us who knew him. Hard day for a lot of people in that organization."

NHL commissioner Gary Bettman issued a statement on the death of Kivlenieks.

"On behalf of the NHL family, we extend our deepest sympathies to his family, friends and teammates in both the Blue Jackets organization and his native country of Latvia," Bettman said in the statement. "His love for life and passion for the game will be deeply missed by all those who have been fortunate to have him as a teammate and a friend."

Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen shared his condolences on Twitter.

Kivlenieks, who was undrafted, signed with Columbus as a free agent in 2017. He made his NHL debut at Madison Square Garden on Jan. 19, 2020, stopping 31 of 32 shots to beat the New York Rangers 2-1.

Last week, Kivlenieks and fellow Columbus goaltender Elvis Merzlikins made an appearance at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course for a ride-along event. Kivlenieks was spending the summer in the United States.

Legace’s backyard has a large pool, with a five- or six-person whirlpool a few feet away. That’s where Kivlenieks was seated when he was struck in the chest by the mortar, knocking him to the ground.

“There were visible injuries to his chest … whatever a blast from a mortar would do,” said Oakland County coroner’s investigator Jeffrey Collins. Kivlenieks also suffered massive damage to his heart and lungs, the coroner’s office said. He likely died within seconds.
