Sweet, eight pound baby Jesus.  I hope you are right.  If he is dumb enough to not get a pardon on the way out the door or he tries to self pardon, he is more stupid than I think he is, and I think he is very stupid.

If he doesn't arrange to have a pardon for himself then it really means he truly believes he hasn't done anything wrong and is the most delusional person on the planet. He makes Don Quixote look like Galileo

I won't quibble over what constitutes "incremental", but if you're referring to the hurling of baseless accusations that ultimately never amount to jack shit, that absolutely is a continuation of what the GOP has done for decades.

Yeah, we’re going to need a non-violent reform “revolution” or we’ll get a violent one instead. The writing has been on the wall for some time now.

There was only one candidate openly discussing any reforms along those lines, and she didn’t even win her home state in the primaries. Americans don’t want reform. They either want the pre-Trump status quo or they want a nationalist autocracy.

Rep for both your example and initial post it references. I find your example to be better attuned than the tweeter who is commenting upon her tweet. She isn't a 'dork,' at least not in my own understanding of that word (socially awkward person) and 'dork' (to me) implies less harmful. What she is doing does violate some general social norms and cause people to cringe, but it is more to the point of what you've outlined. She is making a social statement apropos of nothing: "government can't tell you what to do--so I ran for government and"....what?

Oh! That's right, to protect the Second Amendment which as far as I can tell isn't in any danger. "Oh but it is and that's why I'm carrying my Glock to Congress--to protect against Antifa and socialism." That is where the idiocy and the evil and the cruel and the cringe collide and you called it correctly.

Also, um how stable is she? I  mean, these seditionists are not going to be attempting to be armed while meeting with others, correct? Can they be?

Does she carry in schools and banks as well?  Government sure does have the ability.

also, shouldn’t a super 2a nut “patriot” be carrying a colt 1911 or some other American gun instead of an Austrian made one?

Congress people can carry weapons into the building but are supposed to leave them in their office when going to the floor for voting. They aren’t screened on entry though, so some are likely carrying cause 2A.

edit: she asked about carrying during orientation apparently.

Trump is pretty inured to civil lawsuits.  They've been a way of life for him his entire existence.  He can bluster and bullshit and preen, but when trial's coming, he can quietly settle.

A criminal case or two is gonna hit different.

Anyone who thinks statements from revered Republicans will make any difference doesn’t understand what we’re dealing with. Trumpism isn’t some incremental continuation of the GOP of yesteryear. It’s a completely different thing. It’s a parasite that has finally emerged from its host in its full grotesque glory. The GOP body that once fed this MAGA monster is now nothing more than a ravaged husk. It is of no further use to the now-independent parasite, and can be ignored.

This is such a spot on analogy.

i like Franken, and he has noticeably increased his public profile in the last 6 months, but i saw an appearance a few months ago were he kind of looked "out of it".

Not suggesting Alzheimer's or dementia, but he didn't seem as sharp shall we say. It was a bit sad to see.

I'd like to see Franken be spokesman for an anti-ALEC group.  Much like Stacy Abrams has become the face of voter protection.   Add Katie porter to the group.

Again, it’s a huge blind spot that assumed that we would elect qualified, stable people for the job. I doubt the first rule book at the morgue included don’t fuck the corpses either.

Airport sources said surveillance planes appeared to lay the groundwork for Trump’s arrival in November. An MC-12W Liberty – a US Air Force version of the King Air 350ER, which is modified for the Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) role – landed at Prestwick on November 12. It made a number of flights over Trump Turnberry.
Another US Army aircraft that visited the airport on November 12 also carried out surveillance flights over Trump Turnberry.
A source said: “The survey aircraft was based at Prestwick for about a week. It is usually a sign Trump is going to be somewhere for an extended period.”
Some media outlets in the US have speculated that Trump would announce a 2024 re-election bid during a flight on one of the President’s official Air Force One planes on inauguration day.
Veteran NBC reporter Ken Dilanian tweeted: “Trump may announce for 2024 on inauguration day. Either way, he won’t attend the inauguration and does not plan to invite Biden to the White House or even call him.”
White House spokesman Judd Deere said Trump has not finalised his plans for inauguration day.
If Trump does fly to Scotland he could be in breach of coronavirus restrictions. Trump Turnberry is effectively closed until February 5 due to Tier 4 rules, according to the resort’s website.
The US Department of State – America’s equivalent of the Foreign Office – said it was for the White House to comment. The White House did not respond.
The Scottish Government said the UK Government’s Foreign Office is responsible for planning Presidential visits. Transport Scotland said: “This is an operational matter for the airport itself”.
Prestwick airport and the Foreign Office did not comment.

I was just about to post something similar. Would the UK not extradite him?

Scotland is just the first stop. Once criminal charges are filed against him he will move to a country that wont extradite him.

No one is going to file criminal charges because no one in government has the spine.  Oh noes!  We can't set that precedent!  Fuck that.  The precedent being set right now that the rule of law means nothing is FAR worse.

New York definitely will and now Georgia is likely to. Don’t know about the feds though. Probably not.

Or he's betting that Biden and the next AG don't pursue any type of charges, and sadly he might be right to bet on that.

Holding politicians accountable for crimes isn’t in the interest of politicians , as most of them commit crimes on some level- most of it bribery related I’d imagine- and there’s a gentlemen’s agreement in place to keep it that way much the same as nobody in the sec reports cheating to the ncaa.

What incentive does Pence have to pardon Trump?

5 hours ago, Hugo Stiglitz said:

His political future.  Many people still don’t fully understand the dynamics of the current GOP and I’m not talking about the politicians, I’m talking about the voters.  They are the cult.  If Pence is given the opportunity to pardon Trump but refuses it will be seen as a betrayal by the cult and Trump will make it perceived as a betrayal.  The precedent set by Ford pardoning Nixon is Trump’s best chance to avoid federal prosecution.

I say Pence has a 50% higher chance of not being kidnapped and put on mock trial and executed by the Proud Bois if he pardons Trump.

Yeah, I think we were talking about it upthread or another thread yesterday.  But I reread the story a few hours ago on CNN, and I am still just floored by this.  Of course it's nowhere to be seen on Foxnews.com         I'm still trying to come up with an analogy to another job.  But when your former bosses have to remind you not to listen the current boss and possibly consider violent police action against your fellow citizens (that you are legally sworn to protect).....that's is some third world country shit that nobody ever thought could happen in the United States.

I can't even think of a good analogy for this.  Something Trump could understand.......What if all the previous Colonel Sanders got together and wrote a letter instructing all the KFC employees to disregard any orders from the current Colonel Sanders and NOT throw chicken grease on customers who don't purchase the correct combo meal in the opinion of the current Colonel Sanders.  It seems unnecessary to have to tell them to not follow orders resulting in innocent customers not happy with the current KFC management team being seriously injured.  But here we are, Donald.  Commander Dipshit.

Biden won b/c traumatized voters believed he was the best option to beat Trump, not that he’d make the best president.  Most voters want what Warren is selling.  For whatever reason, they just didn’t believe she could win.  I don’t think this is a controversial conclusion.

Almost 200 of the country’s top business leaders urged Congress to certify the electoral results for President-elect Joe Biden in a letter Monday, arguing that “attempts to thwart or delay this process run counter to the essential tenets of our democracy.”

The letter marked the business community’s most significant push yet to ensure President Trump’s efforts to overturn the November election are unsuccessful. Signers included a wide array of executives of Fortune 500 companies, from the leaders of banks, airlines, investment firms, pharmaceutical companies, professional sports leagues, real estate conglomerates, top law firms and media companies.

“The presidential election has been decided and it is time for the country to move forward,” the letter reviewed by The Washington Post said. “ … The incoming Biden administration faces the urgent tasks of defeating covid-19 and restoring the livelihoods of millions of Americans who have lost jobs and businesses during the pandemic.”

Letter: Business Leaders Call on Congress to Accept the Electoral College Results

Many of the leaders have previously been wary of getting publicly involved in politics, and some have been supportive of the president. Kathryn Wylde, the president and chief executive of the Partnership for New York City, which organized the letter, said questioning the national election was causing long-term damage to the country and that important issues such as vaccine distribution and high unemployment needed more focus.

The partnership — the major advocacy and political influence arm for the business community in New York — counts many of the city’s top firms as its members. Among the signers included leaders of Goldman Sachs, Microsoft, Pfizer, the National Basketball Association, Mastercard, Blackstone Group, BlackRock, Lyft, Deloitte, Warby Parker, Moody’s, WeWork, Ernst & Young, JetBlue, MetLife, Condé Nast, the Carlyle Group, Hearst, American Express, Saks Fifth Avenue, Price Waterhouse Cooper and Deutsche Bank, along with 150 more.

Others who signed include some of New York’s top private equity and real estate figures including Henry Kravis, Rob Speyer, William Rudin and Laurence Fink.

Much of the business community initially had a cordial relationship with Trump in the early days, coming to Washington for summits led by the president’s daughter, Ivanka Trump, and son-in-law Jared Kushner, and maneuvering to influence the Republican tax bill. They were pleased with some of Trump’s choices for top administration jobs, such as Gary Cohn as his first national economic adviser.

But there was a significant rift after Trump’s comments in Charlottesville on the protests by self-proclaimed white supremacists in the streets, and chief executives withdrew from his business council. There was also considerable frustration with the White House for capping the state and local tax deduction as part of the tax bill.

Trump has taken particular joy in having close ties with some business leaders such as Stephen Schwarzman, chief executive of the Blackstone Group. Schwarzman did not sign the letter, but the president and chief operating officer of his firm — Jonathan Gray — did.
