Now I see why you said <wait for it>.  Apparently neither you nor I believe that Fox News would ever say such a thing.

I think the "smart ones" are moving on to DeSantis at this point.

And most republicans will still never believe the last paragraph of this post.  Astounding how incredibly stupid so many people can be.

What’s stunning is that anyone never understood this in the first place:

”Trump is unfit to be anywhere near power”

West Side Story kicks ass. Singin’ in the Rain was awesome and Debbie Reynolds was a total babe. Fiddler on the Roof is a masterpiece. I seem to recall liking Mame. When I was in my high school drama club we did a show called Merrily We Roll Along. I don’t remember any of the music but I remember liking it. And the story worked backwards in time. I thought that was pretty cool.

I’ve never seen Cats but the costumes and makeup look pretty cool.

If I visited Broadway tomorrow, I’d go see David Byrne’s American Utopia.

I'm not going to be judgmental of someone's masculinity for liking show tunes.  But they most definitely do not "slap."

Oh, for sure. In theory, Trump doesn't get the nomination, urges his legions not to participate because it's all rigged....but they will show up anyway, because DeSantis is fucking crazy enough to suit their needs.  And he would have all the buzzwords down (border, rigged election, cancel culture, CRT, covid, whatever is trendy in 2024) and that would be enough.

Trump had a unique ability to bring people into politics that otherwise don't care. I don't know if DeSantis has that. Kind of reminds me when they tried to make 2018 Betomania happen again in 2019-2020 on the national stage

This is a great point IMHO.

Trump was the ultimate outsider - someone who had never held elective office. He even had a slogan for it - "drain the swamp". It resonated with people.

DeSantis is a lawyer and has been in politics for many years (several in the US House and now governor).

That said, he still checks a lot of the boxes the MAGA crowd likes and doesn't have anywhere near the baggage of Trump. It's an easy switch for Trump supporters looking to bail.

Sure he did.  But now that they are here, they do "care" (their caring is limited to whoever can inflict as much pain on people they don't like) in a sense that someone picks up the torch Trump carried.  DeSantis (or someone else) will do that with glee.

I guess that's the real question here. Lots of people are very "ride or die" for Trump, which is the opposite of "looking to bail" as far as I can tell. I do think that regular voters are easily going to fall in line, if they are straight ticket R folks. But Trump's magic was bringing out people who didn't vote regularly, and aren't "likely voters" if you're only looking at statistics. Is that something DeSantis can replicate?

I should clarify and say Trump voters as opposed to supporters. He has a pretty solid base of hard core supporters but not all Trump voters fit that criteria (as much as the narrative on here tries to push it).

I think your last question is up in the air due to the fact DeSantis is just another politician.

The Rs will most definitely "fall in line" behind whomever the candidate ends up being. It's something they do well (and to their detriment with Trump) and something the Democrats struggle with.

That theory may very well hold true, although many Trump 2020 voters are dead from covid and Trump's 2020 silver medal performance is still a high bar for DeSantis to clear.

One thing that could throw a wrench into that idea is how nasty DeSantis's takeover of the party would be. We saw what Trump did to Jeb and Ted in 2016, and those resentments lingered even into the convention. My $0.02 is I don't think Trumpworld™ is going to gracefully step down from power within the party. Whatever butthurt we saw from Tedworld™ during 2016 I think we can expect several orders of magnitude greater pettiness and scorched earth from the Trumps.

The only way this could work is if Trump can be "sold" on the idea of stepping down into some kind of advisory role. DeSantis needs to kiss ass, kiss the ring, and do everything in his power to resist "backstabbing" optics at every stage (including this one where the Select Committee is methodically demolishing the counternarrative downplaying or justifying January 6).

I don't think DeSantis has what it takes.

It's pretty simple.

Trump's legions will do whatever he asks of them.  If he doesn't get the R nom, or the R high command and donors finally say enough, and runs third party (lulz, because that would require him bankrolling some of this on his own) that would fuck things up for the GOP.

If somehow Trump is incapable of running (legally speaking, death, whatever) his followers will be courted by DeSantis or whoever with promises of summary executions of Democrats, or something maybe a bit more scaled back, but you can assure whatever promised will inflict pain and suffering.  That would be enough to get those voters.

Trump is not going to help DeSantis at all, or anyone else, or serve as an advisor.  Unless someone coughs up a billion or two for him to walk away, because the only thing he respects besides unbridled power is cash.

I don't think there's enough of those people, if there's still loyalty to Trump and Trump doesn't give DeSantis a full blessing.

Dotard was unique in that he had been in the public conciseness for 30+ years before he ran.  Name and face recognition means a lot to morons.  Also, the Obama racism probably doesn't go as far these days since it has basically been normalized.

If Trump were to run 3rd party, he would email the entire GQP electoral base that he has been swindling for the last 6+ years and command them to donate to his 3rd party campaign. Plenty of them would, and there ain't a goddamn thing the party could do about it. It would be fucking glorious. But I still don't think he has any real intention of running, GQP or 3rd party. he's just in it to play kingmaker and get the king's share of the grift. He doesnt need to be president to be protected, he just needs the GQP to have power. They will protect his fat ass.

He was uniquely stupid in a way that connected with uniquely stupid people, of which there are far too many in our nation. You won't get that from a career politician.

That is DeSantis's best case scenario. The question is whether Trump will buy into acting in his own best interests. Sounds like it's not an easy sell.

There is not enough LSD to make Cats worth watching over something else, it's a fever dream clusterfuck.

Phantom of The Opera, Cabaret, Chicago, Fiddler, SITR, etc are awesome. Book of Mormon is hysterical.

Deal is brokered. Trump doesn’t run, desantis pledges to appoint trump as SoS.

also, a quick question:  does the term show tune refer to any song in a musical theater performance?  Or is it more of a style of musical theater performance?  Is everything in Phantom or Hamilton a show tune?  Because a lot of those songs are great but don’t sound like what’s on bye bye birdie or South Pacific or music man.

another aside- how apt is music man as an allegory to trump?

Mame is really fun. American Utopia isn't really a musical and it isn't playing anymore but the film is really great. He actually performed it at ACL in 2018 and it was in the mid 90s and humid, and they were facing west. It was HOT. Still a hell of a show. ."

Good take, but Singin' in the Rain should not be a stage show. It's a stage adaptation of a movie that happens to be not only one of the best movies ever, but also the greatest movie about the movies ever made. It should be called "It's the mid-1980s and we have no ideas"

Oh, I’ve always been a lot more selective in my use of LSD. But I do regret not dropping acid before I saw the Blue Man Group in Vegas in October of 2001. I thought about it. But my two friends who were with me wouldn’t have been into it. It was about 30 seconds into the show before I regretted that decision. That would’ve been awesome.

Not a style - songs from musicals, typically those that take on popular significance outside the context of the show. Memories (cats), Washington on your Side (Hamilton), Lida Rose (the Music Man), and Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas (Meet Me in St Louis) - all showtunes.

Can DeSantis emulate Trump's success on the national stage?

DeSantis supports the same outrageous policies. He's not the same outrageous celebrity showman that Trump is.

Back when Trump was running for the GOP nomination, and I thought he had no chance, I did observe that he could launch a funny line and that he was better at sounding like he was just talking rather than speaking.

His absurd promises about winning and the wall appealed on a level separate from actual politics. He recognized the power of the hate engine and decided not to keep it in a low gear. He recognized the NFL jersey aspect of voters on the right. And he is an outsider and a celebrity.

Sarah Palin would thrive in this environment. Ya know we gotta keep those aliens from comin' in here and doing all those crimes and livin' on the welfare. Crowd goes wild.

The GOP will have to win the usual way: with a minority and likely cheating. It's an almost unbreakable combination now of electoral college and local Trumpist authorities. They may very well win, but it won't have the emotional pull of Donald Trump.

Okay, I'm going to go wash out my mouth with Draino now.

Edit to add: I see chainsaw handled this quite well. Compliments.

So Priscilla Queen of the Desert was a great show, but they basically just had a bunch of disco hits and gay anthems playing through the show.  And Avenue Q was great because they created the song The Internet is for Porn.  I have unfortunately been to a lot more shows than that and have discovered that this style of entertainment is not my thing.  That being said, every once in awhile a song will come out of a show that I actually like.

The real problem with musicals is that they are like most albums.  Usually 0-1 songs are good, sometimes 2 or 3 or good, but it's super super rare to get a whole show filled with good music.  I find myself wanting to hit the fast forward button to the next song about 75% of the time when I'm stuck in the auditorium.  PQotD worked for me because the set was clever and it was basically a greatest hits album.

It doesn't help that I am one of those that hears the melody of the voices rather than the words, so I might have to hear a song 20 times before I actually ever really hear the lyrics and understand what they are talking about.  This makes musicals pretty fucking infuriating to sit through, because it is hard to follow the story and most of the songs in any given show are trash even if there happens to be a banger thrown into the mix.
